I would love to have Julien as a teacher. I always hang on to her every word. Fuck, her take on good and bad brought me to tears, this girl always gets me so emotional.
this whole interview and concert is so beautiful and moving; Julien has such a brilliant mind, and an eloquent way of capturing deep emotional truths, whether through songs or speech. I'm so happy to see her well and exploring new horizons after what's seemed to have been a rough couple years, but a lot of personal growth and healing 🖤 I love that for her, and I love new JB music for all of us. I also loved Julien and Cheryl's discussion on her pursuing education of some kind down the line, and would 100% sign up for a Julien Baker MasterClass
I really appreciated your language in the interview. You have a definite ability to discuss emotion. Separately, you seem to use music to both punctuate and augment your lyrics. That’s a talent that I praise and regard highly. Thank you.
+++ to Cheryl for not only being a great interviewer but also managing to direct things back to playing the music, because I think I would just talk to Julien for like 5 hours. I realize it's her job and she's good at it, but ...yeah I'm pretty sure I'd just get into a conversation about things like epistemological elitism for as long as she wanted to tbh.
this was the first time I heard song in E in its entirety and wow, just wow, I actually fell completely silent and started sobbing, who allowed such a masterpiece to be created.
the Scott poster in the background breaks me. It must be so hard to recover from depression when one of your close friends and inspirations wasn't able to carry on himself
I first saw Julien perform on Tiny Desk I believe around of after the release of Sprained Ankle. I was absolutely captivated by that performance and have loosely followed her musical ventures, many times via KEXP, since then. That said, I did not hear anything about this turbulent time that the new album is a reflection on. This interview is stunningly bare and direct and honest. The music is great as well - but this conversation sheds light on the kind of struggles we all confront but often don’t share or try not to acknowledge. Thank you KEXP and JB for bringing us all the beautiful music and also the humble/human discussion around a difficult subject and personal struggle by a truly gifted songwriter and musician.
hardline reminds me of a song from her early days before sprained ankle!! her bands name escapes me but it's SOOO refreshing I'm so excited!!! edit: The Star Killers!! if you haven't heard them and you like jb, please listen to their album on bandcamp. you won't be disappointed
Just when you think Julian Baker can’t more clearly shed light on a topic, she tuns on a lamp. She is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest song writers of our time. Such a beautiful sole.
I love Julien so much and Cheryl Waters has to be one of my all time favorite interviewers. Also the portrait behind Julien of Scott Hutchison brought such a big smile to my face. :) ♥️
I really didn't expect Faith Healer to come right after she spoke of "mourning that mythos" Nothing has hit me that hard in months Such a beautiful soul, and such beautiful music...
A very smart person like Julien harboring a wish to be a teacher makes me feel good for having the same crazy wish and going through with it. Don't know if she'll ever join us, but here's hoping smart people continue to be called to teaching, in greater numbers, so that the profession can be elevated. In the meantime... these songs are sounding so good, I'm imagining (dreaming) how good they'd sound live in a concert hall.
Except neither, both because a) logistically they wouldn't go to a UK wizard school and b) fuck it, let's come up with a different sorting system that doesn't acknowledge a huge TERF
I have immense respect and admiration for Julien Baker as a human being and musician and I just want to mention that she is an incredibly tiny human being
What a brilliant woman... I found this very calming today Like talking with myself You don't need oil To open your third eye I'm quite real One love BE THE LIGHT
I meant to watch this as I brushed my teeth and got ready for bed, then finish what I didn't catch in the morning; that was silly, of course I watched all of it. Covering my favorite Soundgarden song and feeling like Cornell's voice and lyrics were haunting? I just can't. I was already entranced before, but my god, I need Little Oblivions in my life.
literally googled to make sure whether it was epistemic or epistemologic (which are related, either could have gone in the sentence, but i didn't remember the word epistemic bc we talked a lot about the privileging and especially the gendering of epistemology in college, which is what happens when you kind of force-make yourself a queer studies major when that major doesn't exist at your school) and she's totally right and also i want to talk to her about it for like 5 years.
I have this on as background noise while doing some training for my job as a non traditional adult/youth educator for a non profit 😆 Julien would be perfect for a job like this. What a lovely interview/performance.
The fell on black days cover is so good! Its not just such a beautiful homage to Chris but also a masterful interpretation of Kim Thayil's guitar playing and the harmonisation with the voice melodies and bass lines. Also the overthinking of dogs is pretty spot on imo.
I didn't expect to like listening to Julien's interviews as much as I do. She should start a podcast, very good talker.
she really has a nice "podcast" voice
Sometimes I just skip the songs to get to the parts where she teaches philosophy during interviews
I agree. Usually, if I'm listening to a podcast and there is music, I skip the music. I didn't skip anything with this. Everything was enjoyable.
Whatever she wants
phoebe was so right for that
Fr
JB, "I should have gone to law school to make a difference"
Meanwhile me, a lawyer, "I should have become a musician to make a difference"
Hahaha I love seeing different perspectives like this
Every time I get some stupid pleading or email from opposing counsel, I think about just quitting and starting a band....
Julien is such a gem. Jesus, what a world we would live in if more people in power had her heart.

Truly every time I hear her speak it’s as if my heart stops beating so I can listen closer
WE ARE BEING FED TODAY ❤️ THANK YOU
Finally, some good fucking food!

so happy "mercy" is actually going to be released in it's studio version as song in E !!!

hardline is very f.r
protect these two at all costs
She's so real. So SO real, that my MTV-oriented mind has troubles to totaly grasp it sometimes.
I'm learning a lot with Baker. In my 40s.

I thought I loved Hardline, but her cover of Fell on Black Days truly blew me away.
couldnt agree more. i’m blown away
I could listen to Julian talk all day. Really intelligent and engaging.
literally having the hardest week and this made it so much more bearable :)

Big chills from "Fell On Black Days"!!!
I'm happy Julien is alive and making music and thinks deeply about healing and about what's going on in the world.

I love her so bad😭😭😭
What's nice about Julien is that she is dead honest! Much success Julien & you sure are making up for a lack of touring.. Take it easy & have fun!
Kexp and Julien Baker. Doesn't get any better.

I´m hopelessly in love with Julien
That was so pleasant. You're both such kind hearted and sweet people❤️ Very soothing morning show☺️
CHERYL WATERS SUPREMACY
Julien Baker just never misses!
I *also* used to think Brandi Carlisle's Black Hole Sun was the best Soundgarden cover out there. Thank you Julien for proving me wrong.
Julien no this is more than I could take in a day! but thank you

Yes, this is what I needed... Thank you. A truly wonderful person, would listen to her for hours.
I'm thankful for you Julien, and Cheryl you're always such a pleasure, thanks KEXP 🖤
something random but at 41:07 you can just hear Beans and their collar. And i find that endearing for some reason.
"epistemic elitism"
*jots it down*
Ok but why did I actually do that
literally googled to make sure whether it was epistemic or epistemologic (which are related, either could have gone in the sentence, but i didn't remember the word epistemic bc we talked a lot about the privileging and especially the gendering of epistemology in college, which is what happens when you kind of force-make yourself a queer studies major when that major doesn't exist at your school) and she's totally right and also i want to talk to her about it for like 5 years.

Fabulous conversation - fabulous artist. Thank you KEXP
I wonder if Cheryl was rocking the black Vans as well
All the songs are great in their own way but the fell on black days cover is incredible
oh my, yes please and thank you.
Never heard of Julien Baker before tonight. She's terrific. I can't believe she's on her fourth album already. No, I don't live in a cave.
the fact that she's got Scott Hutchison poster in her room, and how much Frightened Rabbit inspiration can be felt on "Hardline"
Chris Cornell would love this version. What an outstanding emotional version. still powerful.
I've never connected to a musician's lyrical work more.
so stoked with the new record
ugh so true queen
Such great music, and a great attitude.
This is such a heartening thing to watch at a moment like this one
That's a poster of Scott Hutchinson behind her isn't it?
so much musical talent. it's rare to see someone who makes it look so easy
The new album couldn't come soon enough.
Love how Matt Gilliam (Julien's Bestest Friend) is going to be probably touring with her when the pandemic eases
