PG’s Chris Kies visits Nashville’s Diamond Sound Studios before Julien Baker ventured on her joint tour performing as a solo act and with her songwriting compatriots Phoebes Bridgers and Lucy Dacus who all compromise boygenuis. Before launching the tour at the Ryman, Baker walks us through her sparse rig, before getting colorful and spacey with a plentiful pedalboard of modulation and ’verbs.
Julien Baker favors T-style guitars because of their breadth of tonal varieties, how easily they can be modded, and their dependability. She has a blue Fender Tele that has a wiring mod that unlocks both series and parallel modes, but the above butterscotch model has its stock wiring intact. It has been upgraded with a G&L ASAT pickups with a P-90 in the neck and a MFD in the bridge. She goes with Ernie Ball Slinky .010 -.046 strings and digs in with Dunlop 44P88 Nylon Standard .88 mm picks.

Please tell Chris Kies that he's a great host. Asking good questions and letting the guest talk without interrupting. A rare thing in youtube-videos.
Chris and Perry (?) are my favorite hosts on this channel.
seriously, just came down here to mention that. especially with julien baker who seems withdrawn normall
Two years later: this is still one of my favorite RR’s. She really comes across as as a gear nerd w/ a genuine “working musicians” approach. Obviously we can’t all afford two big amps/some of those pedals, but she isn’t pushing the whole “$5K boutique guitars are the ONLY way” mindset. Chris let’s her get into the nuance with enthusiasm w/o trying to talk over or direct the convo. Feels like two awkward musicians talking shop in the green room after a show. I LOVE IT.
I know this comment is four years old but I have to wholeheartedly agree that Chris is the best host of these RRs. He’s super knowledgeable but doesn’t feel the need to interrupt the artist to interject his knowledge. He asks the perfect questions at the perfect time.
"Because I wanted be able to make that Memorial Day Sale at Guitar Center tone."
Dead.

I had no idea what she was talking about the entire time, but this was endlessly entertaining. It's so easy to be drawn in by her personality.
Part mad scientist, part musician. She is something. A lot going on in that brain of hers. Such a great talent.
She seems like a kid showing off all the cool stuff they got for Christmas, genuinely excited to talk about it.
“...yeah, no I’m not an idiot, that doesn’t have a midi in” lol dude I love her
i actually howled hahaha
PG, I love how this entire long clip is un-edited. Great natural convo between players. Not into this artist's music, but it is great to see the video produced as a long form natural dialogue without the "ADHD editing" or chopping out interesting parts in the interest of squeezing into a preset "10 min long clip".

love how the host is a little shy and awkward but still does his job genuinely and passionately. Thanks for having Julien and the Rig Rundown. This reminded me of my dreams and reawakened my passion.
Am so glad she's having more spotlight! Am still pissed fender isn't yet endorsing this beautiful and intelligent women.
Alejandro Cisneros yup but they give this young lil girl a ukelele endorsement haha give Julian baker her own tele signature
What does her being attractive have to do with anything?
F*ckin perverted creeper.
BTW, you're "pissed" lol she wouldn't care about you, if you were dying in a dumpster.
Chris has gotten so much more comfortable with interviews. I really dig that it's obvious when he's a fan because he's able to ask astute questions about pedal applications in specific songs.
Alex Stewart yep dig his rig rundowns
Am I the only one who thinks we are watching a legend in the making this past year or so?
she's no Nita Strauss or Lita Ford..or Jennifer Batten . IMHO
most likely.
Yes, almost certainly; as far as one knows or can tell.
the only way she wont become a legend is bc the public ignores her talent unfortunately
@@julianbenedict9720 Nor is she trying to be. That’s not what she does. Why would she?! She’s brilliant at what she does.
"Huge Minus the Bear, Explosions in the Sky nonsense." Love her even more now.
I had absolutely no idea who Julien Baker was and just wanted to have some background-talk during practice and I must say that I absolutely love her attitude. The way she's talks about her gear, how she uses it and how she tries to improve herself as a musician is definetely something to look up to. Both, she and the host, showed a really nice type of dialogue. Learned a lot here.
i have no idea what she's talking about but i still love her
there is so much to learn in this. its actually wild how much of a deep dive this is.
Old keyboard guy here and never posted anything. Just wanna say its awesome to know the youngsters are out there working on their craft. Love this ladies skill and attitude.
The sound she gets from that "frakensteined" pedalboard is HUGE though! If you watch her play live, you can feel the guitar when she starts to pick hard with her dynamics. It's insane the tone she gets. Never heard anything quite like it, until hearing her music. So glad she did a "Rig Rundown" so i am able to see how she gets that ginormous tone!
Best 36 minutes Premier Guitar has ever recorded.
R u for real?
Totally agree
Seriously...
Wow! Please tell me you’re joking.
You alright there? This is mediocrity at best.
This was an awesome interview. I loved that Julien did an audio example of what each pedal does, why she likes them, etc. I’ve never checked out Julien’s music, but I will now.
I agree. That was the best part. Pedals i don't know and find very interesting are great to learn about from people who actually use them for more than a demo.
oh boyyy... are you ever in for something special
Nimble Wit hope you like it!! I’d love to hear what you think :)
Let's not kid ourselves. We're all just glad to have finally found a rig rundown where someone admits to having drawn out a pile of pedals and still can't explain it like we all have.
Now Julien is playing in boygenius with Phoebe bridgers opening for Taylor swift concerts Shed so talented and deserves the recognition and fame
This was so cool. Chris did a great interview and Baker's personality and approach came through so wonderfully. Why I love her music and these rundowns.
Dudes obsessed with using the grip of the pick for strumming, asks everytime
hchoe741 haha
We will let him know that you're upset...
@@premierguitar Don't sweat it. I think we all had a lil oh-ya-now-it-all-makes-more-sense moment when The Edge filled us all in that he uses the grip part of his pick to strike the strings. Another minute detail of how/why someone has a different tone than you'll ever have. Julien's all about reverb and delay so I would've asked the same question and for fun I would've pulled out a grippy pick and said, hey Julien, that thing you just did was rad! Now try it again holding this grippy pick sideways - you know ... for science!
@@premierguitar yes.let him know. Even tho the posters comment had no negative connotation in his comment
Thanks.
do i have any idea what shes talking about in regards to her equipment? no. am i still watching this whole thing and falling more in love with her? of course.
Big same
That was nice of her to explain the pedals in depth.
She is the best. So fun to watch and listen to her!
I was falling sleep at her slow speeching
The Communist Why do the young folks today make every statement in the form of a question? Obnoxious

The Ride Never ends don’t know? When I run into one later, I’ll ask him.
Freaking amazing interview. I feel like I got mentally flexed on and I know it wasn't even the intention. Thank you for this.
She takes the time to think before saying anything and the words that come out are pure gold.
I literally understand less than 5% of what she's talking about, but it's still wicked cool.
I legit want to be friends with Julien Bakers so much
Come to Nashville and you will occasionally run into her at shows, she is a really shy and humble person. I've had small conversations with her and she is really nice!
Big same!
One of the best RR’s so far IMO. Chill host, good conversation, actual exploration of tones, so good. I guess it helps when the artist is as affable and knowledgeable as Julien🙌🏼
There is so much strength and control in the way she ONLY plays what's necessary. With all these pedals, I'd totally get distracted and start noodling unimportant stuff within a minute.
not only does she write amazing music, but she's also humble and down to eath. Great interview!
I simply love watching her geek out about her setup. Thank you for this.
Intelligent young musician..... she's got a great future ahead of her- great style and a lover of telez so she's already ahead of the game!!.....very confident lady!..best of luck with your career!!!!
Someone should put her in contact with Daniel Steinhardt. I'm a fan of hers and That Pedal Show, so it would be awesome to see her on the show for a board build. A G2 would make her life a bit simpler (however with multiple loopers on the go and sending stuff to different amps, there's always room for... um, unplanned spontaneity).
napalmhardcore Dan would have a field day with the signal path on that pedal board.
napalmhardcore that is exactly what I was thinking.
napalmhardcore brilliant idea.
Two years later and I still think this would be awesome. If nothing more, I’d just love to see the three of them nerd out about gear and bridge that boomer/gen-Z divide 🤣
This lady is so intelligent and talented that makes me re evaluate why am I playing a guitar... Awesome rig rundown episode...
That should be a template for all future Rig Rundowns in terms of going properly through each pedal!
Having a fantastic artist do it such as Julien Baker only makes it sweeter.
Bonus point for the Excess, it can be a struggle at time but its soft spots are cra-ay-zy
This is one of the best Rig Rundowns.
Man, this really drew me in. I'm not familiar with Julien and figured I'd watch the first couple minutes. She's super interesting and creative.
zbqb84a same here.
zbqb84a i
I never heard of her till this video popped up after watching another musicians video. I have now watched about everything there is on You Tube of her. She is amazing and I am a fan.
Been a big fan of her music for years. Julien Baker is so adorable!
Listening to her talk just cured my hangover
underrated comment.
She seemed so humble and genuine.....How refreshing.
Just a bassist passing through. This is a very good interview. She's so enthusiastic and the host knows when to ask, when to expand on a topic at hand, etc. I'll check her music now.
First I've heard of her, but she seems cool as hell.
She is. Check out her Tiny Desk concerts, and go from there.
She sings suuuuuper happy tunes... give 'em a listen :)
@@duckyboy666 She sings sad songs in a happy tune setting
I hadn't heard of her either. Now her music is about the only stuff I'm listening to since I saw this video.
she's a goddamn national treasure
I love this show, introduces me to so many cool artists
Indeed!
I think her pedalboard might be heavier than her
'Bigger Than My Body' by John Mayer may apply in this instance.
you think? lol
Her live tone is so heavenly
Thanks pg for this really nice interview. Julien is auch a sweet person and great musician.
i like this more than other rig rundowns. it's more of a conversation between them
so cool, I love her personality and love for effects pedals 😍🙌🙏👏👏
She is so genuine. In her music, her interviews, and even her set up. I keep falling for her lol a beautiful soul
Frankenstein's a crazy loop system rather than just using Ableton like all her friends -- Ten thumbs up!
Well, damn... Been interested in her music for a while, but I just fell in love with her.
I just realized that Julien pretty much always has a hair tie around her right wrist yet you never see her with one in her hair...
Great interview, let us see not just the effects and pedals but how she uses the effects. great player and great interviewer.
Always interesting when someone gets creative with modern pedals. And shock, horror, actually demos the sounds. Good episode.
Really useful from a technical standpoint, and I loved hearing her opinions on picks - the plectrum so seldom gets any attention. Great interview, PG!! Now I’m gonna Google teh Interwebs to get the story on that *sleeve!* 🤗
This is the first I've ever seen of her, and her music is gorgeous. And this interview is fantastic!
That "wrong use" of Morley splitters is absolutely brilliant! Daaaaaaamn, Julien!
@32:45 blew my mind - crazy-awesome that she plans ahead like that, just in case
i thought i was a pedal nerd but she puts me to shame! love to see it, julien is so articulate in person and on record
I've rehearsed at that studio a number of times! No frills, just the essentials!
i love her board
This was a great one. If you're taking requests I'd love to see an Alvvays RR.
gotta travel back to prince edward's island 1991 for that
Wow, amazed at the similarities with The Edge. I guess they come from the same need to do more with a single guitar. Impressed.
I got into pedals in the first place after her 2016 Tiny desk concert. Gotta love her
chris kies is awesome. premier guitar rules! please do a slowdive rig rundown!
My band was in one of those memorial day sale commercials back in the day hahaha, the director definitely told us to channel Slash at some point!
I've never wanted to build a pedal board more than I do now..
The Rig Rundown I return to the most.
Nobody at all:
Julien Baker: @16:30 "the nomenclature"
Loved this! Especially as one of the earliest through Middle Tennessee State’s RIM students, to see how far it’s come w Julien and others!
“You have too many pedals” I stop talking to that person lol this is great
this is what this show should be she gets it
She is just awesome! Idk anything about pedals but this was a nice watch
Discovered her last week. I now have her albums and live performances playing constantly. What a find! LOL (I've been inserting Jeff Buckley songs into the rotation once in a while; THAT'S a dreamy combo!)
she is absolutely amazing
yall should get the artist when possible to perform one song using the gear as a demo at the end of each rundown
My first thought: wow, is this some kind of an oversized jumbo-tele?
Shes AMAZING love she seems to b happy with her success n shes jst getting started I feel like the skys the limit for her
Different loops to different amps.... what a great idea! I'm going to try that.
Julien Baker is awesome in pretty much every way...thank you for this rig rundown!
julien is the greatest! and this was an awesome conversation
I LOVE THIS WOMAN.
I guess I can go ahead and add this to my list of favorite Rig Rundowns.
She's right about Strats v Teles.
Wonderful. I've got 5 reverbs on my board (today), so I totally get where she's coming from.
Which 5 reverbs do you run and how do you use them? If you don't mind me asking. I've only ever run 2; a dull long-tail into a bright short decay (typically). Like Julien says; by cascading reverbs, you can achieve pretty interesting frequency responses.
Julien is amazing. Her music proved that to me but now I feel it even more seeing how much of a hands-on gearhead she is :)
Where's the jar she uses to keep my tears?
She's also the guitarist in greta van fleet
dGG lol
Naaah, she has ideas, it cant be her
@@dominiksosnovec11 I mean she looks similar
looool you made my day
@@SamdGG yes, i know, i just wanted to poke greta van fleet a bit :D

You have no idea how long I have waited for this video
I LOVE JULIEN BAKER SO MUCH.
at like 9:40 when she was talking about her board setup, thats literally circuit design!!! thats fucking crazy shes so cool!! hhhh no wonder her sound is so layered and nice
"its your rig so thats what it is" what a nice thing to say omg thank you host for being a sweetie
I like that with Julien's brilliance, she still puts stock in sound and feel. as if the technical will take you so far and at some point disconnect and revert back to what works for your hands and ears. BTW, I have a Mel9 and love the slightly cheesy tones . Ü ♫
Chris is doing wayyyyy better in his interviews. Great job dude!
HEY JULIAN, I actually came over to say I really liked your Gretsch SIgnature Model and the fact that it's a Jr is cool. I'm sorry I'm out of it but I am realizing how cool you are I dig your Tatt's too lol. I was hoping to see you playing the Jr. I'm sure I'll see you playing it at some point. I am a huge lover of the Gretsch Dynasonic pick ups I think they are the gratest. I hope you get one with the Dyna's Nothing like the P90. I like the p90 but nothing like the other. I hope your success conotinues to expand. I get the feeling you will blow peoples minds. Hey, I know that adams fella I use to live in Raleigh. LOL Good night
Julien is so sweet offstage.
