    Your approach is truly an intelligent and refreshing approach - very well done. It is a real surprise and shock that the previous owners spent hundreds of hours with trivial considerations on paint colours/shades/technics whilst the floors beneath their feet were literally rotting away. I stopped watching their channel after a while it all got far too tacky.

    Everyone who has lived and owned the Chateau has left a mark. Now we are in your era. Very interesting to see it thru the eyes of a young architect. Thank you for sharing with us. I'm old but hope I live long enough to see the coach house done some day. Very fond of these buildings.

    Thank goodness someone is finally prioritising the restoration of the basic structure of the chateau rather than guilding the pretty bits inside. Get the main structure sorted first , then you can do the fancy decorative features on the inside.

      yeaah agreed, like the owners of Chateau de Purnon and Avensac, they prioritize important structural elements like roofings and support. make the building safe and functional first, beautifications must come later

    It’s easy to see why so many of these buildings have fallen into disrepair. The cost to maintain them is massive and it’s becoming difficult to find craftsmen to do these complicated jobs. Fortunately, la Ferte now has you at the helm. I really love how organized and honest you are about what needs to be done.

    • @OhNoAnotherChateau
      @OhNoAnotherChateau  5 днів тому +22

      Thank you for your comment. You're right, it's getting harder to find experienced artisans for this kind of work. It just takes a couple of years of disrepair for things to take a turn for the worse. In our case, the house was left empty for a bit over a decade in the 90's and that's the damage we are still having to address!

    I absolutely love it when you have a collective of friends who get involved in a project together. The energy is amazing.
    Also, the fact that the electricity is not up to code is no surprise. I used to watch the previous owners. They did a semi good job but I don’t think they cared enough to do it all properly. They just wanted to concentrate on the aesthetics. It’s about money as well so I think that may have affected their decisions because they spent a fair bit of money on the grand salon when the structure was the most important. I unsubscribed from them some way in because I could see that their decisions were confusing and so upsetting that the building wasn’t being cared for properly.

    • @JuSutton
      @JuSutton 4 дні тому +3

      I also felt the same, it was all about paint & frills rather than getting the core structure of the building and utilities in good shape.

    You are taking a very organized approach to everything and being very diplomatic about work that has been done. Liking your priority list of getting the roof repaired. My Dad was a carpenter and always said a tight roof was the first priority that chimney is high on the list as well you don't want it crashing through the roof. It is sad that. Adrian didn't replace the beams under the salon when the whole floor was out.

    THANK YOU. I said several times on Adrian and Carole’s videos that what they called the original kitchen was not accurate; the age of the house dictated the kitchen would have been in the basement. I also knew that had to be the case because of the odd doorway between the ‘original’ upstairs kitchen and the dining room with the wide framing, it had to have been the dumb waiter from the basement. ALL houses like this from this period had them. Adrian never showed that little fireplace. I know the rest of the basement had to have been other rooms used by the domestic staff as well.

    • @OhNoAnotherChateau
      @OhNoAnotherChateau  4 дні тому +1

      To be honest that fireplace was a bit hidden behind the huge old heating system. I guess the upstairs kitchen was originally more of an informal / service eating space. The old gunracks above the fireplace tell it all.

    • @alexac3098
      @alexac3098 3 дні тому

      @ I’m very interested in 19th century grand homes. That room has always puzzled me. I thought it must have been the original dining room, because of the proximity of the butler’s pantry and the site of the dumb waiter, and the exterior door leading to the exterior entrance to the cave. And in old homes, the basement kitchen was always directly beneath the dining room. But looking at the floor plan and the size of the door from the corridor, that doesn’t seem likely. I do think that the original butlers pantry would have been bigger/longer, encompassing that entire end of the house including the space that currently has the WC. Also entirely possible that that exterior door was only added at the time the kitchen was moved to the ground floor.
      I do know the current kitchen was the library, and if I remember the floor plan correctly, there was an additional room within the room I believe would have been a study.

    I’m glad that you are addressing the issue of making good decisions regarding structure. The last owners saved the house from ruin, but they were not knowledgeable about proper practices regarding heritage structures. I like the assessment process you’re showing, it reminds me of my college days learning my heritage trade. Hopefully you will inspire more to approach restoration with more thought and planning before acting. Great vibe going on too!

    I am enjoying your vlog on restoring La Ferte, the Architecture and problem solving with Engineers is going to be fascinating. The Main Staircase support has always been my biggest concern but now that you showed the chimney - that's an urgent issue. I wonder if it leaned more in the high winds recently? Do be careful!! I'm curious where the dumb waiter was, from the kitchen to the upstairs pantry?
    The time, effort and money the prior owners put into making the Chateau habitable, with a few rooms decorated so their mental health and comfort needs were met, made it so that others can live in the Chateau while work continues. Due to budget constraints and urgency, some fixes were done with the "temporary 20 year fix" acknowledged at the time.
    I am so glad that all of you (guests included) appreciate the habitable condition it is currently in. Happy with your new home, even with all it's aches and pains

    There is definitely a ton of work up ahead for you guys for the next few decades, including major stuff like structural work, having to set up huge scaffolding for the roof and the rendering (scaffolding is damn pricey in France!) for a long period of time (might consider buying it instead of renting it, and selling it when you're done with it, if you can afford that). 💸💸💸
    But damn this is such a beautiful peace of property 🤩 The window above the entrance is stunning : would you consider having a vitrail made in place of the regular glass there ?
    Also, I LOVE the nationalities/language mixes in your homestead 😄!!! Cheers guys et bonne chance à vous ! 🥳💪

      Most definitely the most intelligent and structured approach to buying/restoring an old building on the Chateau circuit of owners. I wish you all the very best of luck and will watch with great interest. I absolutely love your complete honest and frank approach to describing the good/ bad/ ugly. Sadly you have been left with a lot of ugly.

    I’m sorry your comment sections are filled with people who take offence on the behalf of the previous owners. They had their time in the chateau, used that time as they wanted, done the work they wanted to and SOLD the building on. They obviously recognised the amount of work needed was far more than they were able to take on, hence they have moved on.
    Their loyal viewers also need to move on mentally.
    Sadly the building is in bad repair, it needs structural work before anything else can happen. That’s the reality of an old building, papering over the cracks only works for so long. Bon chance, in your adventure 😊I look forward to seeing this beautiful building shine again.

    I live in a 200 year old house and also had a damp cellar, I placed mechanical ventilation that’s always working for the airflow. Works very well

    • @OhNoAnotherChateau
      @OhNoAnotherChateau  5 днів тому +1

      That's certainly one way of tackling it. I still think we can make it with natural ventilation, we just need to revisit the existing openings (there are quite a few) and redo the main basement door. But I guess we'll see in time! Thanks for your comment.

    Hi guys. How did you find this chayeau and how much it cost? I have been watch many programs about restoring or rebuilting chateaux like Dick Strwbridge family, ,Chateau Diaries with Stephanie,,Chateau de Purnon,Chateau de Chaumont with Dany who is rebuding from the ashes etc, I`m also dream with a change to do the same so., I do npt call that program like"Oh No Another chateau! cause I`m delight about it although I understood your sense of humor.

      We will get to costings further down the line, for sure.
      Now, finding a château is no easy task, I (Gustavo) took the habit of looking online constantly, slowly creating a method that would compile what I was looking for in a property like this - and what compromises needed to be made. Our goal with this channel is also to show people how to look for these houses.
      Cheers!

    Hi Gustavo & Reni, if I could make a request; I would really appreciate it if you could reconsider the use of the censor beep sounds (e.g. @ 4:10). To me (and it seems to some others) it is genuinely painful. If possible could you maybe look into using some other one (or at least lowing their volume)? 🙂

    💕If you remove the Tommy tiles & soil/clay & everything else they use to put under them it would take they weight off the beams in your cellar💕Those shutters are beautifully unique also the Lead paint & Rust is very easy to remove just leave to the summer months to do them outside💕

    There are so many chateau's in France in this condition and worse. Many of them will never be renovated due to the cost. Sadly they are money pits and many owners can no longer afford to maintain and renovate them and they simply just abandon them. Hopefully with a lot of luck and knowledge this chateau gets restored to its past glory.

    Slt, mais que faites vous dans ce piège? tu as raison c'est plus une maison de maitre qu'un château, mais il va falloir passer beaucoup de budget pour assainir les bases, drainer et refaire complètement la structure, la rendre étanche vu la façon comment ça travaillé dans le temps, les fondations seraient elles suffisamment solides? le sous sol bouge, rien que pour le stabiliser il va falloir creuser et renforcer.. vous êtes courageux, mais ça implique beaucoup de temps mais surtout d'argent, est ce que ça en vaut la peine? bon courage, réfléchissez ;)

    • @OhNoAnotherChateau
      @OhNoAnotherChateau  5 днів тому +2

      Salut ! Les bases sont plutôt saines. C'est vraiment la structure des planchers du RDC qui sont à voir. On fera les choses doucement, au fur et à mesure. Nous ne sommes pas pressés !
      On croit vraiment au potentiel de cette belle maison.
      Merci et à bientôt.

    Would it be possible/permissible to replace all the rotted wooden beams in the cave with steel beams? That would solve the issue of woodworm. Dan did a lot of steelwork when he redid the floors at Chateau de Chaumont, I'm not sure if you've been keeping up with that restoration. Those floors are solid as a rock.

    • @OhNoAnotherChateau
      @OhNoAnotherChateau  5 днів тому

      Yes that's one of the options we are currently looking into. Generally it's preferable to use one material for the whole floor. (In our case that would be all wood.) But who knows...oak beams of that size are hard to come by, not to mention very expensive! Thanks for your comment.
