Dear Rhonda travels! ❤ Where is the big ol' knife in the barn wall?! Hey, been meaning for a long time to tell you I bought a really cute coffee mug to support Mercy For Animals. Your jacket reminded me!
That edition of Macabre Reader used to be advertised in Famous Monsters of Filmland. Same with Shadows of Eyes. Btw, your video has a certain Ed Gein vibe.
You’re lucky you can afford a Barn of Terror. The best I can do is occasionally rent a Shed of Discomfort. Seriously though, I’m definitely going to do Horror Mayhem myself. I’ve got a number of books in the genre I need to finish off (and not keep getting distracted).
Fred Chappell (now deceased) was an interesting writer and poet. An English professor, he wrote a. lot of "serious stuff" (poetry), but once in a while he'd come out with a nice work of fantasy or the weird, in something like The Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy and others. I'll be very interested to know what you think of Dagon.
Was Rhonda the passenger or the driver? When we had boring staff meetings at work (and they were all boring), some of us made up jargon bingo cards - whenever the presenter would use language like "integrated multi-skill learning" we'd cross it off our cards. The winner had to yell "Bingo!" loud enough for the other players to hear, which sometimes gained an odd look from the presenter. The trick of course was to stay awake long enough to complete the card. "Every week is Week 3 for me": love it. The pitchfork behind you lends the video a suitably American Gothic vibe, Michael.
Love the cruising music! After seeing your unboxing I picked up a complete horror stories collection from Algernon Blackthorn on kindle. I might read some of those and maybe some Poe in May. Love those vintage paperbacks though. Thanks for sharing!
I read the Charlie Parker novels by John Connolly. That is the closest I get to horror. And I read the first three Bunnicula books in elementary school.
I completely forgot about Horror May-hem! So many reading events to keep track of... 😭I don't know if I'll be able to fully participate, but I will at least try and read one horror novel for the month of May in honor of the event. 😛Maybe I'll read The Beetle... your Sunday Penguin video on it is one of my favorites. Love those old covers, especially Flowers from the Moon (unsurprising, knowing me 🐺). Good luck with the event! Glad to see Rhonda seems to be doing well. 🥰
_The Beetle_ looks really interesting, and apparently it even outsold _Dracula_ originally. I will have to read it because I am fascinated by ancient Egypt and mummy horror. I wonder if you have read _The Ring of Thoth_ and _Lot No. 249_ by Conan Doyle? They are great mummy stories; you should definitely give them a go if you haven't already!
@@BookTimewithElvis Thank you; I had not heard of that book. If you are into Egyptian-related fiction I would highly recommend Rider Haggard, author of books such as She, Cleopatra, The Ivory Child, The Ancient Allan and Wisdom's Daughter, stories rife with ancient occultism and references to Egyptian religion and history.
The pitch fork is a nice touch for this special month. Thanks for opening my eyes to books I would have never considered reading. This last year you turned me onto classic horror short stories, which has quickly become on of my favorite genres.
I went online and bought Flowers from the Moon because that’s one of the best covers I’ve seen and always wanted to read non-Psycho Bloch. Thanks for showing off these deeper cuts!
This is such an awesome event, I'm looking forward to taking part. The Macabre Reader sounds like a great collection. The Dagon step-back cover is awesome.
You really should bring Roger with you when you go travelling. I’d love to see other drivers’ reactions when they see him in the passenger (driver’s?) seat. BTW Librivox has a good reading of The Beetle.
I read the Titus Crow book years ago, an interesting character travelling around in a Grandfather clock as I recall and the 'transition' itself is amazingly imaginative, IMO. Also Mr Lumley wrote many good short stories.
Yes, Brian Lumley (RIP) was a really enjoyable writer. The book of his that I read most recently was Fruiting Bodies and Other Fungi, which I read last year. Some really fun short stories in that one. I think I will re-read Necroscope soon, as it has been nearly 30 years since I first read it. However, I still have so many other works of his to pick up and read. Some are hard to find and get expensive. I really like the early editions of many of these books, which had much cooler cover art, such as the Titus Crow title you showed.
Local horror you say? The Wendigo from Algernon Blacktwood takes place on the complete opposite side of Ontario that i live in but it still counts a local? 😅
One of my favorite horror recommendations is Summer of Night by Dan Simmons. A coming of age story which seems to have echoes of Stranger Things but predates it by decades. Highly recommended.
I hope that Roger doesn’t eat the Lady of the Manor’s lady’s maid. Your valet was bad enough! I hope you’re at least wearing pants for this video, not that we would know or care. 😉. My copy of The Beetle was just delivered so now I just need to finish Captain Blood. ‘80s is classic fyi.
While I like all of it (hell, I even like the Wanderer), other than the Time War stories and some other exceptions I have always felt that Leiber´s horror and fantasy is generally better than his sci fi. The way he brought horror to modern urban landscapes i s amazing. I do love The Beetle too. Very underrated.
Awesome video! I definitely have to check some of these out.. I'm in the middle of "Carrion Comfort" by Dan Simmons right now and it's amazing. The only other Simmons novel I've read is "The Terror" which is one of my all time favorite horror novels but this one Im thinking is just as good... Was suprised looking through your videos I couldn't find any Dan Simmons stuff. Are you a fan?
"Michael K Vaughan's Barn of Terror" sounds like a cheesy 80s horror anthology that I would totally watch.
I thought the same thing.
I LOVE THE BARN OF TERROR! 👏🏻👏🏻 Where’s Roger? 👀 Scaredy cat! It’s going to be an epic event! 👏🏻👏🏻
Hendrix! Oh, and I'd love to hear you're thoughts on the Fritz Leiber stories. If they stack up to his fantasy books. Great stuff Michael!
Dear Rhonda travels! ❤ Where is the big ol' knife in the barn wall?! Hey, been meaning for a long time to tell you I bought a really cute coffee mug to support Mercy For Animals. Your jacket reminded me!
Awesome! Now you will be drinking coffee of kindness.
That edition of Macabre Reader used to be advertised in Famous Monsters of Filmland. Same with Shadows of Eyes. Btw, your video has a certain Ed Gein vibe.
So good to see that Rhonda is fine again ❤
You’re lucky you can afford a Barn of Terror.
The best I can do is occasionally rent a Shed of Discomfort.
Seriously though, I’m definitely going to do Horror Mayhem myself. I’ve got a number of books in the genre I need to finish off (and not keep getting distracted).
… Oh! Move over, Rover
And let Jimi take over
Rhonda rocks!!!
Which beatle? John, Paul George or Ringo? Probably John....he was a little Helter Skelter😂
“The dreaded real world” - I hate it when that happens!
Yes! It is to be avoided at all costs 😂
So a little Tarantino homage. Needed paws 🐾 on the dashboard.
I thought that was a commercial at beginning!!! Lol😂
"Nothing Horrible happens at the Barn of Terror..."
Old horror paperbacks have the coolest cover art - especially The Macabre Reader and the Brian Lumley book. Thanks for posting these!
The Barn of Terror with a pitchfork! Excellent kickoff for Horror Mayhem, Michael.
I believe I've seen the Barn of Terror in a horror movie or three. It's good to see that you're a man of tradition. 👀😱

I love it! The Barn of Terror and full on mayhem! Looks like a good month of week three 😅
Don't forget week 3! You still need something for that one.
The Beetle is ready on my e-reader 🪲

Ha! Rhonda rolling up on the Barn of Terror like a badass! I think I might have to join you in breaking a few rules!
Glad to see Rhonda better and on the road!

Oh then you should read Guy Boothby's Pharos the Egyptian if you haven't already.

ROAD TRIP WITH RHODA!
LOL, what even is happening on this channel these days. (I love it!)
This is such an awesome event, I'm looking forward to taking part. The Macabre Reader sounds like a great collection. The Dagon step-back cover is awesome.
Can't wait to see the Gibbous Garage
That Fritz Lieber cover is genuinely hideous 😁

I liked the Psychomech trilogy and The House of Doors and it's sequel, worth a read imo.
Fruiting Bodies had some of the best stories I've read from modern writers. Have a great hardcover edition with a magnificent cover.
I read Fruiting Bodies last year as well. Great book.
I'm all in for "Goblin-Monkey as Copilot!"
A great shout out for the event!
Jimi Hendrix in the background?!?! Nice!!!!! Well done sir!
Doggo and Jimi to open the video. You have my attention good sir.
The pitchfork from hell!
I'm sad to hear Brian Lumley is no longer with us. I enjoyed many of his books.
OH MY GOD THAT DOG IS DRIVING!?!?!? Truly Horror Mayhem has arrived.
Sounds like another fun month.
BARN of TERROR, and yet he is at the Manor. I find it hard to believe that anything scares Roger; it sounds like a weak excuse...he is up to no good.
Great video, Michael - I can't wait for this event!
Local horror you say? The Wendigo from Algernon Blacktwood takes place on the complete opposite side of Ontario that i live in but it still counts a local? 😅
That music at the beginning reminds me of “The Raft” in Creepshow 2. 😂
Great opening to the video.
I just saw one of your videos from 3 years ago. I think it was from a different reality (Hello this is Mike) 😅
Oh no! Those old videos do seem really weird now.
I'm reading Bride of the Rat God and The Beetle for Horror MAY-Hem (also some Solomon Kane stories).
Man.. that's one awesomely cool dog !😎

Hey this video required editing. I inspired you, didn't I? 🤭 Oh I can't stand horror but very well. I'll read a Matheson book of some sort.
If I just keep pushing my tbr for another month my picks will suddenly fit this event.
While I like all of it (hell, I even like the Wanderer), other than the Time War stories and some other exceptions I have always felt that Leiber´s horror and fantasy is generally better than his sci fi. While I always found Leiber incredibly uneven in quality with some of his work really good and some not, Shadows with Eyes is a solid anthology.
Yay, Horror Mayhem 🎉
Hendrix!
RHONDA!
Did I mention that I love this?
I have so many questions. Are you old enough for Jimi Hendrix? And it will be in the upper 80's in southern Illinois...is it cold in California?
It was cold for a couple days. It’s now back to normal.
Hello. Can you do a review and description of all of the HP Lovecraft (current) Dell editions. Thank you
