How I'd start a Ski-doo snowmobile with a broken recoil starter (Pull-Start)

  • You don't have to be stranded with your snowmobile if your recoil starter breaks. In this video, I'll test out the emergency start procedure for my Skidoo.
    Your sled may have an emergency strap for this procedure, but it is essentially the same process - turn the motor over using the drive pulley (Primary clutch)
    Note: IN NORMAL OPERATIONS, THE BELT COVER IS AN IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE, INTENDED TO PROTECT THE OPERATOR IN CASE OF A BELT FAILURE. AS MENTIONED IN THE VIDEO, DO NOT INSTALL THE BELT COVER WHILE THE SLED IS RUNNING AND DRIVE SLOWLY TO HAVE THE SNOWMOBILE REPAIRED.
    This video is intended as entertainment, always check with a qualified technician or your sled dealer before attempting any of the procedures depicted on this channel.

    Will definitely have to add an emergency pull cord to the tool kit.
    This surely can be a great asset concerning such unforseen incident.
    The safety measures that you have explained are quite explicit in regards of avoiding surious injuries.
    Again, thanks for the video.

    Another nice upload Dave !
    Also another good point is to mentions its unsafe to run that sled without the clutch guard in place.
    I seen my buddy too late when he was reving his mach 1 with his head over that clutch and the clutch blew and broken pieces went everywhere.
    I told him he's lucky to be alive !

      Hi Joe,
      I did not include that information in this video deliberately as I didn't want conflicting information. As per the operators manual, the belt guard should not be re-installed on this machine when it's running. I suspect the rationale is unsecured metal belt guard meeting turning drive pulley makes a more significant missile than belt fragments. Thanks for the comment, I have made reference in the video description.

    I had to do this on my 97 vmax 700 triple. I would have died if it started up on the first try like that haha. That sled was hard to start even with the original pull cord. I eventually got it and this is such an important thing to know!

    You can also use a leather belt or tow rope around the primary, counter clockwise. Same idea, rap it and overlap the start, pull it fast so that it clears the primary when it starts.

      I've seen videos on this process before, and I don't think they ever point out the danger of working around a spinning clutch like that.

      I have a Anderson open mod Drag Sled with a 617 Rotax mod motor in it. It threw out the cam arms just past my head, without a helmet I would have been blind or killed most likely for a fact, !!! Parts were found like 100 yards away when it blew just past my head, I heard the whistle of parts go past my head!!! Never again I hope !!

    If anyone does not have the little clip what you do is wrap the tag end over the rope when it goes back over, have a very small amount hanging out, for it to work you have to snug it up very tight. DO NOT TIE A KNOT AROUND THE PRIMARY. In my toolkit I keep a rubberized handle screwdriver and will wrap the rope around it, I won’t even tie a knot in the handle just because I’m terrified of it pulling in, doing this makes sure it will just be the rope that gets sucked it if it does. It might work with the spark plug puller but I think it might just be too slippery.

    • @TayTayVideoGaming
      @TayTayVideoGaming 3 роки тому

      Depending on your sled your recoil might also be loose on the magneto side, make sure to check that it is not loose or going to get stuck on anything. If it does fall off do not run the sled for very long, just enough to get you to a safe place to get home, I’d be very worried about snow getting in the engine through the new hole from the recoil falling off. Stick a plastic bag over it once the engine has cooled down while you wait for the part to prevent water getting in or rust forming.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  3 роки тому

      Hi Lonely. Thanks for the tips. Always be careful of doing anything that could result in the rope getting caught on anything. I bought a new toolkit for my sled so i would have everything approved for the sled.

      Not much in terms of maintenance on a track. Clean it with a brush and soap and water, keep it off the ground when you're not riding...belt is very much dependent on how much you ride and how you ride ... I'll put a couple of videos together on this.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  7 років тому

      Hi Just. As I mentioned, the process is slightly different on other model sleds. Some of them have a strap that goes around the primary etc. The starter and clip in this video is specific to the TRA drive pulley type. Basically anything that you can do to spin the primary safely will work. Thanks for the comment!

  • @chavreuil5533
    @chavreuil5533 2 роки тому

    Do you think the engine would spin the other way arround if you pull it the wrong way?this could be an easy and free way to get reverse on a sled that doesn't have it.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  2 роки тому

      No. The engine timing controls that. The point at which your spark plug fires drives the piston down. Do not pull the engine over the wrong way.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  2 роки тому

      As your piston comes up toward top dead centre, the spark plug fires, meaning the combustion will occur just as it passed tdc an drive the piston down. With Electronic reverse, the timing is advanced so far that the combustion pushes the piston back down instead of going past top dead centre. Think of this like riding a bike and suddenly pushing the pedal down after you reach the bottom instead of in the front. It isn't the direction you pull it over, its when the spark fires that turns the crankshaft.

      Of course a sled is always easier to start when it's warm. That said, if you've been trying for three hours, there's something wrong other than your recoil. This method is doing the same thing your recoil is doing, you just have to rewind it manually. Sorry you're having a hard time though. Hope you get it worked out soon.

    • @MyOldSled
      @MyOldSled  5 років тому

      Hi Marialuisa. What kind of sled? Primer or choke? Some sleds are just harder to pull over. A few tips: Remember to shut the fuel off if you are going to let it sit for a while. Try putting your left foot on the running board and using both hands to pull it. I do that with my 670 when it's cold. Try pulling the starter rope out slowly to move the pistons and get some oil moving, then pull it to start. You could try exercising to build strength, in your upper body...(curling weights). How often do you put fresh spark plugs in? I do every season. Won't make it easier to pull the starter, but if it's easier to start, it helps. Of course all of this is assuming your sled is in good working order. Sorry there is no easy answer. Thanks for watching. A couple of other videos that might help:
