Now that the patent for Spyderco’s compression lock has expired and other brands are incorporating it into their designs, what should the generic industry term be for this lock design?
Call it a B.A.L. LOCK ( BUTTON ACTUATED LINER LOCK )
Just make it simple and call it a
”press lock” if available.
Actuated liner lock🤷🏽♂️
@@TonTon98. That's the ticket. B. A. L. Button Actuated Liner Lock
Back Lock?
Depression lock because you have to depress the botton to close it 😂
“ Depression “ lock because I don’t make enough to buy one and I’m seriously bummed about it! ☹️
11:11 reverse tanto lock
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was actually going to suggest reverse liner lock 😂 but if you keep the word liner lock your still going to get liner locks in the search engine results, so shorten it to a reverse-lock and boom your good to go
The fact that first big BENCHMADE wasn’t $700 ASTONISHED ME!!! 😮
I can't beleive it's only $225. Benchmade is coming around to its senses.
$250 is very reasonable. And the rest of the Water Series hovering ~$200 is a move in the right direction. They got the memo, to many great non-usa made options for them to charge $600 for a 3” knife. Playing the long game.. slowly recoup R&D costs rather than making the customers foot the bill in the first month of release is a more prudent approach for sure.
True, this time, while still expensive, is not as crazy out-of-mind as previous
Something simple like the Wedge Lock, I know, my creativity is off the charts 😂
Knifecenter has the absolute best UA-cam channel. I trust you and DCA. I have tried getting into other websites that sell blades channels and I just.. not for me.
Thanks for doing this. And I have bought a few knives from you guys based off these exact videos in case you need some metrics. I trust you all and you all love the blades and there’s no “show” or anything.
Well said. The New Knives and the KnifeAQ series have both sold me on several knives over the years, and my experience with KnifeCenter has always been excellent to the point that I rarely buy knives anywhere else anymore. I really think the KnifeCenter's youtube channel with DCA, Seth, and Thomas are the very best that KnifeTube has to offer and the people that watch seem to be quality people too. I always come away from these videos and the comment section with a smile.
You're not alone.👍
Also Thomas behind the camera. It's easy for good presentational camerawork to go underappreciated because the whole point is to not be noticed.
I seen a single knife presentation video recently on another channel. Zoomed way in on the knife to try and catch maximum detail, none of which came through because the camera was constantly focus hunting, which also made the distracting background even worse, and because the knife filled the frame, any movement made it break the frame and the camera had to jerk around to stay on the knife.
@@Meckell Very good point, thanks for supplementing that. Thomas is a great cameraman and clever, and pretty dang funny to boot.
How about a Push bar lock?
BATL-LOCK (Button Actuated Top Liner) lock
Pronounced like ‘battle lock’
It seems a little complicated but I actually really like that man I hope that takes off
Sick name!
“Button Liner lock” 😂
That first Spyderco is a great made in the USA value and the new Benchmade is the first of that brand that didn't make me choke when I heard the price in a long while. The Vosteeds are all cool and super values. Nice video, Thank you!
renil lock, because it's an upside down liner
That's backwards. Not inverted
@@eatonknass247I clicked on reply to say the same thing. Great reply, you had me lol’g
Thanks for the whole "top liner lock" rant... I agree 100% with what you were saying.
Maybe just call it “Compressive Lock” to keep it similar but different.
Although these Vosteeds are more similar to the Smock’s version of the Compression Lock. Nice that the actuation is encapsulated in the handle, but they must have a finger choil to fit the hardware inside.
Maybe “handle actuated compressive lock” to avoid using “button” and “liner” for searching. Not sure if we’ll find a one word or hyphenated name for it that everyone will agree on.
Seeing as how it’s just another offshoot of a liner lock, like the Cold Steel Triad is an offshoot of the back lock.
Lots of words to say "dunno" while also giving it a nonsensical name
@@eatonknass247 Sphincter Lock it is, O’ eater of “Knass”
I'd call it either a push lock or a squeeze lock
What? Eight fixed blades on a day with no DCA? That’s just cruel.
All the close ups are DCA’s hands. He has scaley fingers all day and slightly larger than average hands
@@SalchiPapa73except that isn't DCA's hands.... Those hands are courtesy of Thomas
Seth's hands and Thomas presenting the close-ups. I feel cheated.
cruel = hair clown
A new Benchmade that’s reasonably priced…that’s nice for a change!
yeah but the magnacut is stupid soft i’m pretty sure
yeah the magnacut is only 61 hrc on those water series. honestly ridiculous
@@acid6urnsFor the use the water series is designed for 61-62 is fine.
@@davidgarrett5671 magnacut loses almost zero stainlessness at 63-64 HRC. there is literally no reason to run it that soft except for cheating out on the heat treat. the stainlessness of magnacut at 61 hrc is almost exactly the same as at 63/64 hrc, which is ‘essentially rust proof’. however what the HRC DOES change massiveness is edge retention. magnacut has a VERY substantial drop in edge retention once it gets below 63 hrc and it gets even worse going down from 62 to 60-61. stop making excuses for companies putting out subpar products.
@@acid6urns like others you overrate the heat treatment and think higher is always better. Even Dr. Thomas says it is overrated in comparison to grind and blade angle. Note that you said “almost” the principal aim of the Water platform is stainless. And how tough does it need to be. If I need to go up to 63 - 65 I’m going with a fixed blade and not fooling with any lock.
Seth does a great job!!
Seth is awesome!
Wow! This new knives week set is awesome!
Great job Seth. Thomas, u get the best shots of the knives on UA-cam- thanks guys
The Pression Lock ?
Is Spyderco making the access cut out bigger for the comp lock ?
Is squeeze lock taken?
I love when you can put it in both ways
You mentioned that other companies are doing the compression lock, but I've only seen them from Vosteed.
Great to see you again Seth.
Great job again bro!
How about for the compression lock reverse liner lock
That Cypher looks really nice.
I’m hoping for the crucarta version of the shaman and Manix2 xl.
Seth V is my favorite budget knife steel
Reverse liner lock? Also, do we trust benchmade to properly heat treat the magnacut? :p
What about just a reverse lock? If it’s not already taken, it’s the reverse of a standard liner/frame lock location
@Hexsyn I don't trust them, do you?
@monkpato never bought one of their knives, but based on what I've heard about them, and separately how important it is to get the treat right specifically on magnacut, I'll be happy to wait and watch
@@Hexsyntheir ADVERTISED hrc is only 61, magnacut should be 63-64 so i can tell you it’s not heat treated to it’s proper performance level.
It's called a depression lock.. also a Brown Lock.. also a compression mod, this Lock started by modding a lefty compression lock adding a button and modding a normal scale. One of my fav locks.
You make a good point, Seth. I was BRIEFLY talking with a custom knifemaker who is making them now and we were calling it "compression" but it IS a trademark. As for a suggestion, I have no idea.
General name for compression lock, my suggestion is: Spine lock.
Because the lockbar looks like it's part of the spine of the knife.
Pressure lock for compression lock?
Press Lock seems like it might be a good option. Button press/Compression. Easy to remember/say/search.
Maybe a 'Top Lock'?
Seth rocks. Love his attention to detail.
How about tension lock?
Thanks for the share.
Are the liners on these benchmades also magnacut or how is the handle doing in terms of corrosion??
I would imagine the liners, spring, and screws are all stainless steel
Liner wedge lock?
How about the Seth lock ?
PressinLock for the Compression lock might be my favorite because it's kind of a word play from pression to pressin, plus that's exactly how the lock works whether pressin a button to push the Compression lock or just pressin the Compression lock itself
Compaction lock. I’m ok with compression lock or reverse liner lock still
How about the Poplock?
You nailed it with the locks Seth. I think that’s a pretty big reason Benchmade sells so many more knives than Spyderco. The Axis lock is ambidextrous and revolutionary while the compression lock is the most difficult of all the biased locks for lefties and doesn’t bring as much ease of use to the table.
That batlle lock idea sounds good
looks like the micarta scales on that PM3 are thicccc the previous PM2 version’s micarta scales felt cheaply thin
Great job guys, enjoyed the double hosting for this week, nice to have multiple perspectives on the questions. No hate on DCA, he's great, but the diversity in your knife passions felt like y'all represented the diverse knife community well. Cheers
Or for the compression lock may be a top liner lock
Button liner lock?
Constriction is a synonym for compression. Call it a constriction lock.
Check this: the boa lock
Brace lock?
It could be an "inverse liner lock".
Is shift lock taken?
@knifecenter in the video you say the Benchmade Adira is $230 but on the site you say $250. What's the deal there?
The mini Hera is the best knife on that table by a long shot. It's the best OTF I own. Smooth, light, and good looking. Everyone here should own one.
man. im so glad spyderco is dropping crucarta in all their main models. para 3, manix 2, manix 2 XL, military 2 it’s awesome.
9:19 Reverse liner lock, or spine lock. Spiner lock?
I would like to hear DCA talk more about the Puzon Bowie. What y’all think ?
That Work Tuff is a monster 😳
Liner press lock ? Or Press Liner lock?
Man..that was the longest Knife Center spend in the Weeds..!! Congrats Seth, you broke DCA record. We have three girls whom are into knives, they have some brilliant names for that compression lock. 1. Sweed Lock 2. Toucan Lock. 3. Slide Lock. If you really want to be original, lets call it " The push button barrel pushing the liner lock across so the blade can be deploy". Howzat.? Hubby reckons that we should call it an Adlock coz it present multiple safe deployment. Advantages - Inspector Gadget's middle name.! Cheers from Australia. Hi Thomas & DCA. Great job Seth.
Jam lock.
In the spirit of the rock climber’s technique to wedge your hand/foot/etc. in a cracked rock, known as jamming.
I would rather it just stay known as the compression lock, though.
The radars have been jammed sir.
....rasberry...
Welcome to jam lock
Also partly inspired by the adage “between a rock and a hard place”.
I like this one!
Squeeze lock sounds good!
I get the term "platform" when comes to weapon systems, but what exactly will you be mounting on a folder?
The use of the term platform refers to a lot more than mounting on a gun. I believe Seth used in place of the word series or group.
@@davidgarrett5671 Platform is something you build on. No, not just a mounting on a gun, please tell me you actually got it, it is a common word, and it is used in a lot more than weapons industry (like automotive industry), but it always means the same thing. No, it does not mean a series or a group, no matter how much you wish it did. It just sounds trendy and "tactical", so people use it. Don't. It just sounds pretentious.
@@mountainhobo Have you never heard of a political platform, usually approved at a party convention? How about a software platform?
How about the Shim-Lock? A shim is like a liner, but it's distinct, so it would be more seachable.
It's a button actuated back liner lock. 10:28.
How about “Button Liner Lock” for the compression lock.
To unlock the knife, you press a … a what? A button. It’s a button lock.
The benchmade was a crossbar lock. Their lock is not axial. It isn’t an axis lock. Paul Poehlemann invented a true axial lock in the 70s - which is also a button lock. Best locking mechanism I have experienced on a knife, though some modern button locks are getting there.
Knife collecting is messy. It’s fun. No need to sweat it. 😀
any advise for a deep pocket clip that would fit my Leek (I am a "tip-up" guy and I dont like their clip)
Perhaps call it a "Pressure Lock," regarding the lock type used by the Vosteed Racoon.
Let's call the lock "Steve"
What about the press lock
Captive lock?
Top lever lock
i bought the yojimbo 2 black, yojumbo when it came out. wish I had waited for the yojumbo black. now this one is out. but I can't justify the cost for the small one.
CLI (compression lock improved)
I have a Corgi, the drop point with brass face plate and micarta handles. I like the look of it opened and closed. My biggest problem with it is the detent. It's too loose! Plus the knife carries tip up. I stabbed my thumb one time pretty bad just because i just reached with my thumb to grip the side of the handle that was inside the pocket. It seems the knife deployed by maybe slight pressure against my hip? Either way, I've been hesitant to carry it since. I also am hesitant to gift or sell it, because it's dangerous in that way. If it had a snappier detent i think it would make a great EDC.
Backline lock or topline lock maybe?
Slide lock, or rear slide lock. You have to slide that piece of liner across the Lock bar to disengage. Seems simple enough
Maybe Kinetic Lock?
Button actuated liner lock
Everyone feel lil odd when DCA isn’t there😂
Thank you Seth! Your review ware nice and shaded.
Compressed button lock....?
Pop top?
Without reading through 300 comments lol … I thought “top liner lock” was the accepted replacement term for compression lock.
@KnifeCenter any rough guess as to when the long awaited Manix 2 XL in Cruwear and micarta will hit the market?
Pressure liner lock
27:24 i want to see a comparison between the Halfbreed blades dagger and Benchmade and spartan blades versions.
ua-cam.com/video/ogVkbLC9yfk/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Buttonliner
I said “Press Lock” but I think “Button liner” is a great name too…
Squeeze lock, pressure lock, collar lock?
Like the micro jimbo but all the yojimbo series need jimping. They would have sold a ton more.
Man the Micarta on the Para 3 looks much better than my PM 2, the micarta on my PM 2 was so dull looking it was almost white
what about "Cross Axis Lock"?
Maybe we could petition Vosteed to drop the trademark on trek lock.
Good show
Rear liner lock
Corrosion resistant springs in the Water series?
Yes.
The Biter Lock. For biting off Spyderco’s Compression Lock.
Push lock, Spiderlock (yes I know) Backpush lock, and my favorite, Press lock
