I have accumulated a decent size collection of pocket knives over the last decade or so. The range is from Rockstead, Benchmade, Spyderco, Case, Buck, Fox, Victorinox, Chris Reeves, Leatherman, Microtech, and KABAR. Long story short, I have enough to rotate EDC knives over an unspecified period of time and fall back in “love” with a new/old knife from the collection. For example, I just transitioned from a year of Benchmade 940 series (full size and mini) back to Case traditional slip joints with Indian Sambar Stag. i.e. Peanut, Scout Jr., and Stockman.
I don’t know what the next infatuation will be from my existing collection, but the pool of choices is enough. Yes, I do have a tendency to gift knives to people who demonstrate a genuine appreciation for quality cutlery.

2:30 That was a time when Leatherman owned most of Ledlenser's shares (2011-2018). I thought it was cool that Leatherman would invest in a flashlight company with a factory in Yangjiang where the location is famous for having many competing knife and utility knife factories.

Hmm well said.. I think you explained why I’ve all but stopped watching edc/knives/tools content. What was once the whole reason I’d browse youtube, instead, started becoming unpleasant. Even had occasional feelings of disdain watching someone’s new upload showing their new knife or a couple new knives or items picked up that week.. and again the following week etc
Feels pretty frustrating and stupid to be thinking like that. I’m always happy to see someone doing something they enjoy but I think it was more that I can only watch so much of essentially the same thing. I dropped $130 on a civivi on special last year, the most I’ve spent after 5ish years into this stuff. You’re very correct! But dang if it ain’t hard not to compare yourself ..

I bought that Fenix E03R partially based on your recommendation and had it on my key chain for a few months. Unfortunately I had to stop carrying it because it kept switching on in my pocket, even when it was "locked". I think the button being somewhat raised and with no protection along with my pocket being a bit cramped made it so that it was fairly easy to turn on accidentally.
I ended up switching to a Streamlight 73302 Pocket Mate. It has a raised bit of aluminum around the button to protect it, and the button is flush the housing. As a result it's fairly rare for it to turn on by accident. They're comparable in brightness, though the Streamlight lacks the red light mode and I think the battery life is also not quite as good, however it makes up for it by being cheaper.

Not sure how long I've been watching, but your holistic approach is what draws me in, as opposed to the knife shills who just open boxes and make pronouncements. I don't buy many knives, but I did pick up a 10th anniversary Elementum in the green carbon scales, just because I like the original brown Micarta one I've had so long. But truly I could have stuck with my R2D2 and got along fine. it will all go in the sale, since I'm an old. But still enjoying everything and think you should have far far more followers.

I don't know how long it's been since I found your channel but its been well over 5 years for sure. I found you and another guy that does machining and tool videos called Clickspring around the same time. I've been watching one series about the ancient Green Antikythera mechanism for like 7 years. So it's been a minute for sure. I liked your video style and humor and thought it would be neat to see how an Australian does edc and whatnot. I stayed for Bricky and your more utilitarian view on knives and tools. I don't care for the flashy newest anything really, my favorite and most used edc is a Delica 4 and a microstream flashlight. Now that summer is coming over on this side of the world I'll be using my 13 year old PM2 and my k390 Stretch 2 outside more and I quite enjoy the Esee Izula 2 for heavier work around and outside of the house too.

The velcro noise reminded me of something "fun": where i live, there are the occasional traffic checks by police, where they stop random cars comming their way and check for drivers license, car registration papers and the mandatory first aid kit.
A little over 10 years ago, our car registration papers were done with a strange laser printering toner, and i had the papers in sort of a wallet folded for 3 years without them ever been taken out of there. Went through all temperatures we have in central europe.
And then i was stopped by two police ladies at such a traffic check. Showed them my drivers license, gave them my registration paper (but didn't unfold it myself) and she walked to the backend of the car to compare with the license plate and even though there was traffic going by, i could hear the noise (almost like velcro) of her unfolding my papers.😂 Had to concentrate hard to not laugh.
She didn't find it funny...looked alittle pissed off and sent me off after giving me the papers back without even wanting to see the first aid kit.
It must be that kind of noise, that makes women want you to leave instantly i guess 😂🤓🤷‍♂

Hey Pete, You were mentioning about self-diagnosis of some type of "-ism", so that is why I'm discussing the following on your 'history of edc use' video!
I found out as an adult that I have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). I found out when I was doing some marriage counseling with my wife (because my OCD was driving her crazy - I just didn't know that was the reason). When the psychologist/counselor diagnosed me with OCD, I completely denied it - "No Way!", but since learning more about OCD, I can say he was DEFINITELY correct. I AM NOT SAYING YOU HAVE OCD, PETE; however, I think that many people who have these intense special interests, such as knife collecting, might have OCD, which is why I'm sharing this information here on your channel. I am also very experienced with autism, because I'm a pediatric OT who has worked with children on the spectrum for 20 years, so I'm also aware that people with autism tend to have very intense special interests. In my experience, the autism spectrum is VERY WIDE, so there can be some extremely high-functioning individuals who are very capable in daily life and often have some amazing talents and genius level cognitive abilities (e.g. Elon Musk, Albert Einstein (possibly), etc.). The key to understanding the wide range of ability levels in individuals with autism is the consistent difficulty with social cognition/understanding to varying degrees (e.g. the ability to understand the perspective of others [e.g. their possible feelings, thoughts, knowledge about a given topic, beliefs, etc.] and use this information to guide social interactions and communication).
In my opinion and experience, the male brain tends to be more "autistic-like" in the way it processes information anyway. Compared with females, males are often (but not always) much slower to pick-up on social cues, social understanding, social communication, etc. For example, a woman can walk into a room and know that someone is jealous, sad, upset, etc. and the man is like, "what are you talking about?". We also tend to be very single-minded in our focus, whereas females tend to have strengths in processing on multiple levels at the same time. I also noticed in the kids that I have worked with that the girls who have autism (unless they were very severely impacted), tended to fare a bit better because of their natural strengths in social cognition/understanding. Sometimes I wonder if people with OCD might possibly be a type/sub-group of extremely high-functioning people on the spectrum? I've never seen any studies or literature to confirm such an idea, but there is definitely some overlap with the intense special interests. I also have 2 family members (that I know of) who are on the autism spectrum.
Anyway, I hope you don't mind me saying all this and I hope you don't take offense. It really helped me in life to find out that I had OCD, because I can now understand why I'm doing what I'm doing and get it under control earlier before it causes too many problems. For example, I have a long history of 'perfectionism' and getting very "carried away" with various things, such as getting perfect grades in school, worrying about my family's safety, cleaning the house, doing laundry, gardening, video games, collecting knives or other things, etc. These things in themselves are not bad, but the extent to which I "obsess" about them can certainly cause issues! I would get upset with my wife and family if they did not follow "my way - the right way-the perfect way" of doing things. I would also go on and on and talk about my special interests/obsessions and spend a lot of money on them. Now I take some medications that help calm things down a bit so I can see when I'm getting carried away and work on getting things under control, but it still takes effort and is not easy. I still drive my wife crazy (especially my expensive hobby of collecting knives!), but it has helped me in my marriage and life to understand my OCD better. I also had some "Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy" counseling sessions, which gave me some very practical steps to help get my obsessions/compulsions under control.
I say all of this, because it is my suspicion that there are many guys out there who are intensely involved in the "knife community" who may have similar issues and it might help them to know more about OCD and investigate further if they think this might be an issue for them. On the positive side, I think many people with OCD, autism, etc. (those who are neurologically ""non-typical") make the world a richer and more colorful place. We have made significant contributions to humanity in science, inventions, math, music, art, medicine, knife collecting, etc.! 😎👍

Now I have a Deejo Naked on my key ring, and carry my current fav, a Kizer YPP. Inside my wallet is a SOG XR Ultra Carbon. Sometimes I carry a SOG Powerpint which is about as big as a Dime but with 18 tools. It's very under-rated. Too many lights to mention and they keep improving! My next knife will probably be a SOG Twitch 3 because I like back locks and flippers.
Say, why does Kizer feature a drop bear? Surely there is NO defense against THEM!

I had that wallet for the longest time. Mates gave me shit about it but if you were ever in the shops waiting for the staff to serve you while they were doing something else I'd rip open that Velcro and they instantly snap their head around to serve you...worked every time. Haha

Nemesis made some Al-Mar designed(?) lockback knives a while back, the MPR-1 in titanium and VG10, and MPR-3 in G10 and S35vn. I wonder if they are any good, they are pretty inexpensive.

In ten years I went from fixed blades to folders and back to fixed blades. I’d rather spend $400 Australian on a fixed blade that at least looks good and does the job, than a folding knife that that’s mimicking the ones I already have. At the moment fixed blades rule and in South Australia nobody as yet challenged me for carrying one.

What are your local knife laws like? I heard australia has some strict laws.
I heard from shadiversity that if you use knives/swords for filming/youtube, if its your job, you can carry whatever, mostly wherever.

I’m not sure which state Pete lives in, but all Australian states except Queensland have essentially the same knife laws. Queensland specifically allows you to carry a “Swiss army knife” for general utility, in every other state you officially need a “genuine reason” to carry a knife, and that does not include general utility or self defence etc. Basically, you need to be using it for work, fishing, camping or a picnic or something, not just in case.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, but my Tenacious is still my workhorse and needs the least amount of TLC and sharpening. But… I don’t have any high end blades anymore. For $50 I don’t think you’ll find a better hard use EDC that’s gonna last decades though.

7:23 - I have alot of respect for you for actually saying the quiet part out loud there. Most of these people will not only claim that you are irresponsible if you dont carry one of these kits while doing groceries, but they will also actively try to sell you those items. Nothing wrong with having a kit like that in a backpack or a vehicle, but lug it around on your body at all times? Come on.

You're not alone, I've never dropped more than around $150USD on a blade and don't intend to. Anything more than this really is diminishing returns IMO. Plus I already have several blades that do whatever I need them to, and I'm not really looking to further my purchasing addition.

If you think knives & real flashlights are expensive try getting into guns. But I guess all of these fall into the tool category. Surefire, Shirogorov, Snap-on, and Wilson Combat. All great names but oh the cost.
