Zed, your channel is a great encyclopedia of crafts, techniques, styles and practitioners - there is much to get from each of your unique videos, here I love Ellie's 'go with the flow' approach to the wood and her 'no saw' attitude. Zed, have you been interviewed anywhere about your life/experience/channel?
I sincerely appreciate your kind words and for your sentiment Paul thank you. Reg an interview, I have done a couple way back but alas didn;t get into my life, etc too much. I do hope to share that on a video at some point. Stay well my friend and many thanks once again ~Peace~
Beautiful spoon! Super inspiring to see a carver brave enough to commit to carving a largely freehand spoon on camera yet again. Far too many of us are far too easily bogged down with taking every tiny measurement and angle into consideration, losing something of the materials spirit along the way. As Ellie said, that piece of wood would likely of been dismissed as scrap by many carvers, myself included, yet how lovely it developed! Hope you guys put out a video around the lettering, I too fell for Dave’s style, but have never been able to quite emulate it.. big love brother
Indeed it was insightful for me too seeing Ellie's full approach to carving and her attitudes towards it. Reg lettering she's kindly agreed to letting me film a tutorial with her and so we're sorting a meet up again in the new year. Hope you're keeping well dude and we're long overdue a catch up ~Peace~
Zed…. As ALWAYS fascinating and motavationally inspiring interview and instructional video. Thank you… This particular video really touches my heart as I am traditionally : a mother of 4 , a cook of 50 years, a spinners and weaver of wool 40 years ago for many years, a basket case basket maker of 35 years and since my cancer treatments over the past 2 years as well as the Pandemic , a doodling paper fusion artist and spoon carver ( my husband of 43 years winces at the knife & axe work)🙊 Anyway …🙆🏼♀️ just to say how much I have enjoyed learning from all your interviews and instructional videos but I must say this one is the closest to my heart since Ellie touches so many of the arts close to my heart. Your journey has a lovely purpose for my interests . Keep up your lovely, respectful approach to the artists you feature. Marjorie from Georgia US👍
Hi Marjorie, a pleasure to hear from you and to hear about your wonderful background. Indeed it was insightful to hear about Ellie's background and to see her wonderful diverse craft in person. Happy crafting and many thanks once again ~Peace~
Thanks for such an informative video, really enjoyed watching Ellie’s spoon carving and I would watch more videos with her, if you make them in the future. Very inspiring so thank you!
i love the long shots on her hand work. Ellie is doing this without any thumb protection which just testifies to her control of the tools. So well done. thank you, this is actually a masterpiece (or a master class?) imo. thank you i was like absolutely sure that black spot at the "base" of the spoon bowl made the wood a lost cause, btw. Ellie's intuition of the wood blows my hair back, baby
Thank you so much. I love everything about your channel; so well done, both pleasant, and informative to watch. Beats therapy! Take care, from just north of Boston, US.
Zed, thank you again for the very detailed and wholesome content you bring. I could only imagine how great it must feel to sit and converse with these very talented carvers. I wish you had a patreon or other way to accept donations. Cheers!
I sincerely appreciate your kind words and for watching, it's an honour to be able to spend time with such talented folk and to document their knowledge so that others may learn. Stay blessed and happy carving my friend ~Peace~
2nd time watching this. She has a lovely approach to spoon carving which is quite refreshing. May I ask a question, Zed? She speaks twice of soaking her wood in gnarly water? When, how and why is this technique used? Can it keep wood greener longer? Thanks, mate!
Indeed yes if you keep freshly harvested/cut green wood in water it keeps it green for longer, alhtough you do have to change the water regularly as it can get gnarley ~Peace~
I have really enjoyed this video. Ellie you inspire me. I would love to have a sweater like yours do you sell them? Keep up the great work. And Zed thank you for all the great videos.
Sincerely appreciate your kind words and for watching. Alas Ellie typicaly does not sell her knitted sweaters, but does sell her woodenware and basketry ~Peace~
Great video. Thank you Zed for giving us wonderful content. I was rooting for Ellie not to give up. I’m that way. My carvings are horrendous in the beginning, then at some point, they sort themselves out
Indeed I was mightly impressed with how Ellie worked around that issue and powered forward. many thanks for watching and for your kind words Linda ~Peace~
Hi Tammy, you store fresh wood in water to preserve the moisture, however you have to change the water periodically so it doesn't get mouldy. This isn't a long term storage solution and is only suitable for short term storage. Hope that helps ~Peace~
Zed, I've been following you for probably more than three years now and I've a nit pick I've been holding back all this time that I have to relieve myself of. Blame it on my being an American who just can't keep his big mouth shut but... The top button on those shirts was never, ever intended to be used. Really the top two, but absolutely the very top. I gives you a weird Hannibal Lecter kind of look. Just something to think about. Much respect my friend.

Those wizard letters....really nice...But the tools, oh, lovely
Indeed, love the way she did the lettering and look forward to filming a tutorial with her on how to do those ~Peace~
Thanks for the video, I would love to see a basket making video.
Thank you kindly Pepek, I have spoken to Ellie reg basket making videos and we'll need time to figure out the practicalities of filming those ~Peace~

I learned so much in this video. I loved it. You've gained another subscribed here... Looking forward to the next videos. BIG LIKE.
Sincerely appreciate the connection and for the kind words my friend! ~Peace~
A good lesson on why it's really important to choose a nice piece of wood ! I would've tossed it I think, but nice save !
Most definitely, always a shame having to toss wood aside due to faults, etc and a joy when it can be salvaged ~Peace~
Delightful woman and a great carver.
Isn't she just, was a real pleasure to spend time with too ~Peace~
I would love to see Ellie do letter carving.
I should hopefully be filming that video with Ellie sometime soon ~Peace~
I’d love to see a video showing the letter carving techniques on the spoons 👍
Hi Ken, all being well i'll be returning back to seee Ellie and film a tutorial on that topic ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors excellent, 👍
Nice Demo. I would love to see a letter carving session.
All being well we should be recording that in the new year ~Peace~
Good carve Dear Lady
She is indeed! ~Peace~
Ellie tell us about the way you preserve the wood in water.
Hi Tammy, you store fresh wood in water to preserve the moisture, however you have to change the water periodically so it doesn't get mouldy. This isn't a long term storage solution and is only suitable for short term storage. Hope that helps ~Peace~
Who was the animated wood carver she was talking about that made her pencil extender?
I'm afraid I don't remember, I have linked to her Instagram where you can ask her ~Peace~
"Spooning" with Ellie!😉✌🏽
And the safe way of doing it.... ~Peace~
@@Zedoutdoors Sweet!!!✌🏽😉
wood always decides what it wants to be I once tried to carve a lion head and it turned out to be a skull 👍👍👍
Thats awesome to hear, indeed a lot of the time the wood dictates what it wants to be ~Peace~
The Instagram link to Ellie's page doesn't seem to be working.
Hi Wendy I just checked and it seems to be working fine for me, do try again and bare in mind that Instagram is glitchy from time to time ~Peace~
Thumbs up for a letter carving vid'.
Awesome, She's agreed to do it so we'll be locking in dates to film when next possible ~Peace~
great stuff both, personally i like the knotty bits, its like exploring... atb.
Indeed it does add a lot of character and was great of Ellie to stick with carving this piece of wood ~Peace~

Ha! reason why i do them up is two fold ...it's cold ...and I wear a wireless Mic clipped to my shirt :) ~Peace~
This sucks...I spent 40 min making an informative comment...and it gets deleted ??
WTH ?? !!
