Will this homemade canoe stabilizer really work? Check out this DIY boat bumper project to stay safe and balanced on the water! This is a simple project that you can do at home but there are a few tricks to it :)

I have an 11 foot canoe that has been sitting in my parents back yard for at least 10 years. It was always to tippy so we just got kayaks. Time to bring it back to life! Thank you
Nice! At least you dont have to go searching for one. Hope it works out for you. I think any system similar to this would be great. I love the adjustability. I had it on the lake a few times and got caught in some high afternoon winds and never felt in trouble. Good luck!
I made a very similar outrigger for kayak, but I LOVE the flag pole adapter. I’m gonna try this as don’t like my outriggers in water while paddling any distance.
Exactly! I couldn’t imagine dragging them in the water and I wouldn’t be able to find a good neutral permanent setting because my gear load may change. It’s a huge drag when your trying to paddle if they are too far into the water.
I use quick fist rubber mount to hold my pvc pipe.
I’m not familiar with those. I may have to check that out.
Quick add: I used 1 1/4” PVC, very sturdy. I should be able to slip over the outside of flag poll holder if I sand the outer rim/lip. I’ll update when I do this.
I am very interested on how this would work out for you. Yea I was not a fan of the thought of dragging my pontoons or whatever stabilizers I went with in the water as it would always depend on my cargo and weight. Seems like you could get into some trouble there as well. Not worth the risk. Point is, you could build them to a spec but if you are hauling home 30 pounds of fish or another game animal if you are hunting, your entire profile and drag has now changed. I bought the same pontoons at Walmart for $10 each today. I'm building stablelizers for my canoe too.
You may not need to sand the end of the pipe to fit into the flag pole holder. You may heat up that end with a heat gun and jam that into the flag pole holder and wait for the pipe to cool down. I have tried something similar in the past and just want to share my experience. Thanks for sharing.
You are exactly right. I had to sand the last 4" or so down to a taper to get it to fit. It was a little oversight on my part originally but you can make it work!
Got any measurement info for your pvc piece lengths?
🎉Finally someone who did what I had in mind. Congratulations. Well, I have a question, are these stabilizers really good at not submerging in water? Would it be enough if I put a single 50 cm on the side?
They have been great so far even now. The adjustability certainly helps. Depending on your gear in the canoe or kayak, you are able to adjust your stabilizer level accordingly to keep them out of the water and dragging your speed. When I do lean hard on one side or the other you can certainly feel the resistance. I have never tipped this thing over.

Kayakers remember you can get the yakgear stabilizers for a hundred fifty bucks. Nothing wrong with the Iowa but don't put more in or as much as you would to buy the setup

Someone put plastic flag holders on the kayak I got from the curb.
I did the same thing on my kayak and then saw your video. Confirmation for me..
The only thing was I used 1in PVC instead of 3/4. But..for the flag holders, I had...to use a 3/4 pvc. So I cut a 8in 3/4 pvc pipe and forced 4in of that pipe into the 1in pvc. And then the other 4 in into the flag holder.
Good deal! Yea it gets a little tricky when you start piecing things together and you start using what you have lying around lol But we always find a way to make it work right? I was really interested in a system that I could extend horizontally but I wasnt ready to push it too far. Have you had it out yet?

Haven't had a chance to put it in the water yet. Work has me really busy right now. Hopefully in a week.

I have to do some minor adjustments to move them back a little. But they did there job.
@@lonewolflou2457 thats awesome! So when you say move them back are they forward of center? What is it that you saw that needs changing?

I have seen them there as well. Are they the same size? Mine are still holding up great. Haven’t even had to add air since I inflated them. Definitely heavy duty pontoons. Thanks for the feedback!

What length is your canoe?
It is a 14ft. The truck bed is only 5.5ft. It sounds like a long canoe but im glad I went bigger because when your sitting in it on the water it doesnt feel so big. So I feel more comfortable shifting and moving around for sure. It also provides a lot of space for hauling equipment and gear... on and deer and hogs!
