  • Stan and Rhonda from Over The Hill Adventures discuss whether or not they made the right decision in buying a 2022 Chevy 2500HD Turbo Diesel. Stan and Rhonda share how much they spent on diesel fuel going across the country in the Spring of '22, at a time when fuel prices were astronomical. They decide to take a quick break from their adventures to compare the actual diesel fuel cost of their trip against the cost of what regular gas would have cost them. Is it truly cheaper to have a gas truck or is it cheaper to have diesel truck? Come with Stan and Rhonda as they crunch numbers, find options for cheaper fuel and discuss the pro's and con's of their new truck purchase.
    This is a 12,000 mile review of their truck. Do they feel they made the right decision and is it truly the perfect tow vehicle?

    Scott & Eileen with the exact same truck and trailer here. Still loving your videos. I concur everything you said in your review. I get about the same mileage in my 2021 (10-13 mpg). Still beats the 7mpg I got with my 6.2L Chevy gasser and has a much bigger fuel tank meaning I don't have to stop nearly as much on road trips. (I can be a bit heavy on the pedal when I drive ;). The ease of towing combined with all the towing features and cameras make this a dream truck to pull a camper with. Keep up the great videos. Cheers!

      Thank you for your contribution to our channel by sharing what you tow your Imagine with and what the average mpg is. Your average is a little better than ours right now, but sounds like the more we break in the engine, the better gas mileage we will get. That's the hope anyway 🤞 Looks like you are enjoying some camping trips this summer already! We miss being on the road and are getting antsy to get back out there. Safe travels!

    Hello, Guys. Really appreciate your videos. I have to agree with you on the stability of a diesel TV. My wife and I just returned from a week long adventure to the Oregon Coast. Traveled up the US 101 from Central California.
    I was towing an Imagine 2800BH with a 2018 Ford F150 5.0 for about 3 years. Got maybe 10-10.5 mpg. Upgraded to a 2016 Ram 2500 6.7 Cummins and towing was night and day. Just recently upgraded the camper to a Reflection 303RLS. Towed to Oregon Coast about 1300 miles round trip and averaged 12.5 mpg. I can live with that. Have to agree with "Jake Brake" on diesels. Coming down 7% grades with very little applied brakes and maintained 53-57 mph. Looking forward to see more of your adventures.

      Bob, thank you for your comment. Congratulations on 303RLS one of our favorite. There is a 2022 Reflection 303RLS for sale down the street. Sooooooo tempting but we are going to stay content in our station of life. On the straights we actually 15mpg towing but once we hit some wind and hills that goes out the window with the average of 10.3. The say the truck needs to break in so we will see. Great review. I chose the 2500hd gasser and love it. The big reason I chose the gas was the 10,000 price increase for the diesel. Diesel fuel in our area has been over a dollar a gallon higher than gas not counting DEF ( Your numbers comparing gas and diesel prices were skewed in favor of diesel). You also lose a lot of carrying capacity due to the weight of the diesel. Diesel engines cost more to maintain ie oil changes and filters. My diesel friends tell me that the diesel will last twice as long as the gas. None of them ever keep a truck past 200k and the accessories around the engine typically start failing long before the gas or Diesel engine does. Trade in value will be higher on the diesel but again, you pay 10,000 up front. I pull a 12000 Mesa Ridge fifth wheel and the gasser pulls it with ease. It gets about 8mpg which is less mileage than your diesel gets but your diesel is pulling a smaller and much lighter bumper pull trailer. Unless you are going to be pulling much more than you or I pull, a diesel is not an economical option but more a “I want a Diesel.” You do have an awesome truck and I hope you don’t take this as me knocking it. Just saying the diesel will never recoup what it cost you to operate it. Thanks for the review.

      Hello Mel, thank you for your great comment. In the long run you are absolutely correct on all your points. After traveling across the country in both a gasser and a diesel, the diesel has given me personally a sense of confidence and security. My favorite part is the exhaust brake that helps slow down the truck going down step grades and not burning up my trailer brakes. To be honest I wanted a gasser for the exact same reason you mentioned in the comment. However, I have to disagree about the longevity of the truck. My first diesel was 98’ Dodge Ram Cummins with a 24 valve 6 cylinder. I am no longer the owner for the that truck it’s still on the road with over 300,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, our law enforcement Chevy Tahoe patrol cars that get the best service are done by 100,000 miles. Meanwhile the Ford’s Expedition break down way before that. I hope this will be be my last truck. Thank you again for your enlightening comment. It truly is just a personal choice. Safe travels and much blessings to you, Stan and Rhonda

      @@bosun234 if it’s any use to you, I have a 22 2500 gasser (Chevy). I get about 16-17 mpg highway at 75-80 mph (can get more at 65). About 14 around town. 7.5-8 mpg towing my 10k toy hauler in mountainous terrain.
      I came from an old dodge Cummins that would get 14-15 mpg towing my toy hauler, so that kinda sucks, but if you want a new truck, the new diesels definitely aren’t like the old ones. They’re incredible, but if you don’t absolutely need one to do what you do, they are pay to play workhorses, not efficient solutions to the same challenge (like the old ones), and they’re definitely scary to keep into their old age because of the insane repair costs.

    Thanks for sharing your experience (checking off a lot of boxes 👍🏼) of pulling a 25RL 30ft. -7500lbs travel trailer, and with a 3/4 ton versus a 1/2 ton, and comparing diesel versus gas. First, I think the diesel provides that extra power and braking that one would likely never be upset with and towing a lot, a diesel is a great choice. For us, we pull our 31’ -7500 lbs. (empty) Toy Hauler a few times per year since purchasing it in February 2020 (got a great deal on it) and using a 1/2 ton until June 2020 where we upgraded to the 2500HD as well, with the 6.6L gas engine as the difference. As you described, the stability is so secure/better and the payload (mine is 3200 lbs), is near double of my old 1/2 ton which provides more flexibility. So you know, the gas engine with their tried&true 6L90 6 spd. transmission has been fantastic for us (no issues, runs quiet and buttery smooth). Finishing, our fuel mileage pulling is near 8.2 mpg (US) and 15-17.5 unloaded Hwy. (driving respectfully). Best regards to you both. Robert from Alberta 🇨🇦

    Just stumbled upon this video and it’s a good review. I just hit 12,000 miles on my 2022 Silverado 2500 with the gas engine this past week. I did have a 2020 with the Duramax so I can give a perspective from both sides.
    You’re dead on with the fuel mileage thing lol. I was a little disappointed when I first got my diesel in that it really didn’t get that much better mileage than my precious 1500 with the 5.3. Mine too got in the 10s (10.4-10.7) pulling my 8.5’x24’ enclosed car trailer that weighs around 7500 pounds. By comparison my 2022 gasser gets 8.5-8.6. So about 2 less which depending on fuel cost can be more or less expensive. Here today where I live regular is $3.17 and diesel is $4.99 so there’s that.
    Good to hear that yours has been trouble free. Mine was not but regardless the diesel is impressive for sure. The biggest difference in my opinion on towing with both is the diesel you can just set it and forget it and the gas you really can’t. But I’m ok with not using cruise in hilly areas and I really like my 6.6 gasser. These trucks are impressive for sure and are definitely rock solid towing.

    Hi Stan. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts on your diesel truck. I agree with you. I made the mistake of trading in my diesel dually tow vehicle on a gasser tow vehicle. While I had no issues with the gasser for a daily driver, I regretted my decision when it came to towing my fifth wheel. Here in Colorado the “hills” can be a bit of a challenge for a gasser towing an 15k fifth wheel. It took a couple of long distance trips and approximately 8 months for me to “suggest” to my wife time to go back to a diesel. I am now back in a F350 diesel and couldn’t be happier. The added horsepower, torque and the heavier chassis frame made me quickly conclude diesel is the only way to go for me. Thanks again, Stan for your sharing your thoughts and experiences. Take care and God Bless. All the best, Ken

      Hi Ken, this is my second diesel. I had a 98 Dodge Ram 2500 with the 24 valve. Straight pipe the station heard me coming miles away. That truck was great and had great gas mileage. 23mpg towing my boat. Went to gasser 1/2 ton in 2016 Silverado brand new the one in the video. I loved that truck the mileage was creeping up and out of warranty. However it towed great!! I could not be happier with the new truck. What I am hearing from a lot of comments as it breaks in we'll get better mileage. Truthfully the mileage really doesn't matter in the long run as long as we are finding are new adventure. Right?? Thank you for sharing your experience and affirming what we all know. The bigger the truck, the better, safer, and less stressful traveling. Be safe my friend. Let us know when your out this way. I went with the Chevy gasser, which according to the specs, will tow 16.5k. I pull 10-11k in the Utah mountains, and I think that probably about all I’d want to do regularly. Terrain matters a lot with how comfortable the truck will be towing that weight.
      I think you made a good call with the 15k trailer. The 6.7 seems like it’s a good motor, and in the mountains, I’m sure it’s worth the extra expense.

We tow a 25 foot travel trailer BTW. The diesel tows like there is no trailer attached. I agree with the engine brake you mentioned. I have noticed when going down a steep hill you can tell if the people in front of you are driving a gasser because they are always on the brakes. We on the other hand hardly, if ever, touch the brakes and just cruise down the hill at a comfortable speed. Great channel, love the videos. LEOSA :-)

But I am curious to know if you were able to compare the fuel mileage with your stock tires versus your new ones. Also, did you recalibrate your speedometer to account for the larger tire size? Nice review! One thing I wanted to ask is since you swapped tires to what appear to larger versions, how did you 'correct' your speedometer ? If you did not correct it, you are logging miles at a lower rate which, if unaccounted for, would affect your calculated mpg and your cost. I assume you could have used a GPS device to keep track of actual trip miles between fill-ups as well.... Hi Dan, I agree with you. So in Arizona when you trade in your vehicle at the dealer they subtract the trade in amount from your total amount so you pay less sales tax. Plus, right now the dealer is giving you more for your trade in than you can sell
      as a private party. You will fall over if you knew what they gave me for my 2016. So folks are getting more for their old trucks than what they paid for them. I bought my 2016 Silverado brand knew so I didn’t make out like some. I could not afford a truck like we have with out the tax break and the crazy trade in values. Thanks for the great truck review! I agree with you and we have no regrets about our purchase. As for the disappointing mileage, don't forget that you put larger tires on your truck. Did you have 18" or 20" rims on the truck originally? Your mpg is probably higher because of the larger diameter tires. Plus your engine is still breaking in; your mileage will get better with time. Don't forget to factor the DPF regeneration cycles; those use fuel too and impact your overall mpg. As I mentioned earlier this year, I have the exact same truck as y'all except no Z71 package and Silver Ice Metallic color. I just crossed 14,000 miles with it and at 75 mph, I'm averaging 18-20 mpg; 12.5 mpg towing. We'll be taking a long vacation out west in September (had to cancel our Michigan UP trip because of a Jury Duty Summons). Try rolling miles using mile markers on the highway and compare with your odometer. The odometer miles are probably closer to 0.95 (or lower) miles per highway mile. Then recalculate you mpg. Had that happen with an F150 XLT Lariat I once had. Put larger tires on the truck and the mpg went down until I found the adjustment factor (it was 0.92 odometer miles per highway mile). Safe travels and thanks for the great videos. Hope to meet y'all on the road some day!

    P.S. Check out this link to the Duramax Forum and look at the series of comments at the bottom of the thread. This should help you "correct" your mileage problem: www.duramaxforum.com/threads/gas-mpg-11-4-is-that-right.1022752/

      Hey Bob, thanks for all the great knowledge. We actually calculated our mileage manually by pen and paper. The mileage was backed up with our trip wizard app plus we logged each stop. The calculation came pretty close to what the odometer gave us and gas mileage. We were not to far off. The $3,200 for fuel was a good hard number and it was what we spent using a designated card for fuel only. The service manager told us it would get better as the truck gets broken in. When I bought the truck it came with 17'' rims which was a little bizarre. I did not mined the stock alloy rims. As you probably know the Ford Raptor comes with mostly 17" rims. The smaller rims give you a smother ride. Its funny how all these 2500HD trucks come with different size rims, tires ect. I have 34" tires some guys have 20 inch rims and say the their truck came with 34" tires. It is definitely confusing. However, fact is fact 6,860 miles cost 3,200 in fuel. Traveling on the straights with no wind I can get 15mpg. Once I hit the hills and wind the mpg goes bye bye.. It would be fun to meet down the road. Thanks for the great discussion. @@OverTheHillAdventures - Bit of an old thread but we just returned from our trip west mentioned a couple of months ago. We put 3440 miles on our truck and, overall, our experience was similar to yours but with lots of hills and mountains. Though your trailer is a bit longer, they are similar in weight and frontal area (a significant factor in towing, especially in winds). Our beginning mileage was about 16,000 miles, so the truck is well broken in. We stayed at 65 mph where practical (and legal) with cruise control and tow/haul mode set. Also used the engine brake going down steep grades (it worked beautifully). Overall, we got 13.4 mpg towing (calculated and trip odometer). We had some pretty good pulls over mountain passes and some occasional stiff headwinds. We also drove around doing some sightseeing and exploring without the trailer. A couple things I had done prior to the trip was a system program update at 15,000 miles and an oil and filter change (oil & fuel) right before we left. The system program update cured a known glitch in the DIC. One benefit of the update was an improvement in fuel mileage (1 to 1.5 mpg highway). Something you might should have checked.

I used to drive and tow with our 2016 Chevrolet 1500. This Chevrolet 2022 2500HD Turbo Diesel is the best truck I have ever owned or drove. It is quiet and incredibly comfortable. There is no diesel fumes Inside or outside the truck. I was going to buy a gasser and after driving this truck it totally change my mind. I suggest you test drive one and see for yourself. Great video all, I love it!! I do have a question for you all, total newbie question so please don't laugh. We bought a 2022 2500 gasser and love it. And we bought a 2023 Grand Design Imagine 2800BH from General RV in Jacksonville, FL. We live in Atlanta.....So we picked up our new camper and drove straight to Byron, GA (the only place we could find close to us in Atlanta, everyone is booked up). Anyhow loved how it towed....BUT.....one thing that caught me a little off guard was the push I get from tractor trailers going by. I had the cruise set on 65 and you know the tractor trailers are typically running 75+. We do have a new load leveling sway control hitch too. Is that "push" that needed a little steering wheel correction, normal? Do you all feel that in your truck as well? I know, probably a stupid question but it did catch me by surprise a bit. Thanks for all your videos, I love them all. Oh and we were getting 10mpg going across flat I-10 West to I-75 North. When we got into GA it fell to 8.5mpg due to all the hills. It was 95' out so I think it did amazing. Transmission temp never went above 187'.

    • @OverTheHillAdventures
      @OverTheHillAdventures  Рік тому +2

      The “push” is normal. When we are fully loaded I push the semi truck..lol. Our truck is a little heavier. You might want to tighten your weight distribution hitch. It will help with the sway. The only bad question is the one you don’t ask. So ask away here to help. Blessings, Stan and Rhonda

    I got rid of my 07 ram 3500 when used prices were good. It was deleted so mpg went up as well as power. That is a decision you will have to make on your own. However, use hot shot secret everyday diesel additive, as well as the stiction eliminator. Performance will improve, mpg will go up due to less dpf registration cycles. It will also keep fuel pump and injectors protected. You may also want to add a inline fuel filter delete to use cat fuel filter and Baldwin water separator that will increase filtration at lower cost to factory filters.

    Basically it comes down to how much money a person is willing to put into a truck and what one can afford and what’s one is towing. My two sons one bought a new Dodge the other a new Chevy both diesel.Both are good trucks . My son that has the Dodge he traded the last time with 10,000 miles left on the warranty. He says that’s the best way so you won’t be out of your own money with repair bills. I myself don’t want to put that much money into a truck so I always look for very good low mileage older trucks in very good shape. For example 10 years ago I bought a very nice 1999 Chevy 2500 Excab 4x4 6.0 gas 365 hp 375 lbs toque 110,000 miles one owner for $7,600. today it has 213,000 miles and I am still driving it. 3 years ago I bought a 2004 Chevy 3500 crewcab 4x4 8.1 gas 330hp 450 lbs toque 237,000 miles for $7,000 today it has 262,000 still running strong it pulls my 24ft gooseneck . 3 months ago I bought a one owner 2001 Chevy 2500HD Excab 4x4 Duramax LB7 90,800 miles garage kept K&N cold air breather and tow tuner about 320hp and 650 lbs toque, for $14,000. I just sold a 1994 Chevy 1500 Excab 4x4 5.7 gas I bought in 1999 with 74,000 miles it had 194,000 miles on it when I sold it. My 2001 Chevy Duramax is a very sharp old truck absolutely no rust for it’s been garage kept not even driven in the winter rain or snow we have here in Kentucky original paint that looks almost new black in color. I am always having people come up to me at gas stations or whatever I go looking at my truck asking about it being 21 years old and looks like a new truck inside and out. I am perfectly happy with my older truck.

    The 6.6 gas works great. Pulls hard and will surprise you. Will pull your trailer up passes at 80mph + easy. On the downside of the pass, it will grade shift and slow you down well enough they you will have to tap the gas to speed back up because you are loosing too much speed. After owning the 6.6 gas, I made the right choice. The emissions on the diesels killed the deal for me. Lot of ford fan boys out there, but cubic inch for cubic inch, the 6.6 gas has more power, torque and better mileage. It’s 43 ci bigger and has 29 more hp and only 11 lb-ft more torque.

    I did have some issues: make sure to keep your RPM’s low when using the exhaust break, mine started making whining sounds at the 60k mark.
    The rear axle seal started leaking at the 40k mark. But that might be based on how much weight you’re carrying. I averaged 25k-30k lbs with a 40ft gooseneck.

    For us, the F350 7.3 gas was the better choice than the 6.7 TD. The $10k diff plus higher maint cost and higher fuel cost couldn’t match the 7.3 #s. As always though personal preference is the final factor.

      Hey Mark, always good to hear from you!! I've been asking a lot of folks the same question. What is your gas mileage while towing? You are very much correct it is always personal preference. I'm guessing this will be my last truck and hopefully the diesel engine will pass the test of time. Our gassers on the force never got more than 120,000 miles before they had to be replaced. I know all your fire trucks were diesel. Except for the price it was probably a tough decision for you. Anyway, that 7.3 is a monster motor they also have them is diesel and the most powerful truck to date. Thank you for joining in the conversation. Always appreciate your thoughts. Blessings, Stan and Rhonda

      Towing 9.5-10.5, daily driving 13.5-17.5. Like you, I don’t feel the 2500 behind me, may be diff if I had a 250 instead of the 350. County fleet had mileage & age caps on cars, heavy equip like public works or fire had no caps that I know of. I used to fill my county vehicle at Station 2 in DeVore, one of the few that had both diesel & unleaded tanks. I seldom used my gas card.

    I am not going to buy a new truck. The new trucks I've seen have been in the shop more than on the road. So, when I decide to get in the market for another truck, I'll buy a really good old one ('70s - 90's)

      Hello Mike, thank you for your comment. Our new truck is great and dependable. We have been across the country and just finished another 5,800 mile trip. We will take off across the country once again in a few weeks. I love old trucks! They just don’t last forever. When you travel like we do and tow like we do you can’t afford to have things go wrong. Plus the old trucks are not very good when it comes to gas mileage. 6 miles to the gallon of gas might be a little hard to swallow on a 6,000 mile trip. Thank you for joining us. Stan and Rhonda

    More payload in the gas HD also you absolutely have to add DEF in your fuel costs. You go through more DEF when you tow as well. Not worth the maintenance, fuel/ DEF, and initial $10-$12k cost.

    • @OverTheHillAdventures
      @OverTheHillAdventures  Рік тому

      In a lot ways you are correct. You are absolutely correct I did not include the DEF. I have been told those who have the gasser truck are getting 8 mpg while towing. The beautiful thing about the diesel is I get to set and forget it. Meaning the cruise control. I’m not sure you can do that with gasser when climbing hills without reving out the engine. I know I could not with my old gasser. Like I said before it is truly all about choices. I really wanted the gasser. I did not want the diesel because of the initial cost. However, the diesel will last a lot longer than the gasser. I hope 🤞. Check with me in about 10 years because this is the last truck I will ever own. Thank you for your comment. Stan

    I am finished with diesels after 15 years. Next truck will be 7.3 gas. Modern diesels are now too expensive and too unreliable due to the emissions systems. I can be a new crate 7.3 engine for the cost of replacing fuel/emissions components.

    • @OverTheHillAdventures
      @OverTheHillAdventures  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely correct Brandon. After traveling 10,000 miles across the country pulling our trailer this year. It was worth the cost and the care free towing. However, I was disappointed in the gas mileage of the new diesel. Our old 1998 Dodge diesel got far better fuel mileage. In retrospect, the gasser is way cheaper and now it’s just a matter of choice. I do believe the diesel will last longer. Thank you for your comment. Stan and Rhonda

    My trailer is like your trailer so I chose gas mine pulls 14,500 and pay load 3575 so like your truck we don’t need that power and torque 6.6 is 401 hp and torque is 468 ft pounds of torque

    • @OverTheHillAdventures
      @OverTheHillAdventures  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Brian, so our specifications on our truck is 17,500 with a payload of 3,305. 6.6 Diesel Turbo 445 HP and 901 ft pounds of torque on the rear end. Yes you are absolutely correct you don’t need all that for our 2500RL. Your truck is perfect for your trailer. What I like most about the diesel is the exhaust brakes and the 10 speed Allison. Those are the major differences and of coarse gas mileage. I believe you get around 8mpg towing. I actually wanted to buy the 6.6 gas. When I saw our diesel truck on the lot, was a time trucks were scarce. I certainly did not want to order one which is the norm now.
      Two reasons why I justified the turbo diesel:
      1) I hope this will be the last truck and hopefully get 400,000 miles on the engine. I drove the Chevy Tahoe as a patrol car. We were lucky if we got 120,000 miles on it. Yes it was a patrol but serviced every 3,000 miles.
      2) If we decided to go with a 5th wheel which we came really close I have the truck.
      It really just comes down to preferences. With diesel fuel going through the roof we often wondered if it was the right choice. Safe Travels!! Thank you Brian for watching our adventures. Blessings, Stan and Rhonda

      Luis, we have decided in our retirement to travel in a travel trailer and see our beautiful country. There is a cost to everything we do and things we enjoy. For example some people go out and eat everyday. Can you imagine the cost of that? Some people travel to other countries in their retirement. Some buy second homes or vacation homes. So in perspective, we choose to buy fuel and travel. We enjoy meeting people from around the world doing the same thing. If this is something you would like to experience, you would have to spend a life time as we have preparing for a life of retirement you hope to achieve. Thank you so much for watching our video.
