Great review! I appreciate the unbiased and honest take you had on the pedal. Apparently, these pedals are a more modern take on the TC Electronics boost they used in their early days!
Glad you liked the video! That's the way I take it, as the folks I see pairing this with Rectifiers are nailing the DEI and Chaosphere era tones.
Nice indepth review, you deserve more subs!
+Meshuggah 333 Thank you!
*It's like adding another half of pound of beef patty to a quarter pound hamburger.*
Thanks for the unbiased opinion, I've already ordered on for testing and see If can have a match ahaha
Sounds cool man. I love pedals that tighten up the low end on baritone guitars. Ive been using a Wampler Low Blow
Hello! Great review, was really looking forward to it. Would it be possible for you to put the price/price range written somewhere in the beginning of the video when you review stuff, or in the description? It's one of the main things I need to know, and the way it is now I need to pay attention to the specific point in the video where you mention it or leave UA-cam to look it up myself.
Great work!
+Stefano Zocchi I always leave a link in the description for that sort of thing since prices can fluctuate!
Thanks!
Subscribed:) great content
Much appreciated!
Hello, so in your opinion which pedal sounds better the 33 or Precision Drive? I'm trying to decide between the two of them, or maybe i need to get both lol. Thanks
+Russell Diana I would have to demo the precision drive personally to be able to answer that. For the sound I'm going for, I think the 33 pulls it off better though.
I guess it boils down to which amps and which band you like more: Mike Fortin Amps and Meshuggah? Go for the 33. EVH 5150s and Periphery? Go precision drive.
Just found out that Pepers makes the "Dirty tree" which is a TC Integrated Preamp + a 33 in the same box for 150$, and if you look for "theteddeeh" on Ebay there's a guy building an exact clone of the 33, some of you might wanna look into it :D
I bought one of theteddeeh's pedals. I'm happy to report it sounds really good & it's built really well.
@@chrisfieldhouse6666 happy to hear that! My Dirty Tree should arrive in a few days as well
Good review..I been using a Randall Satan , im gonna have to get this since they were using both.. somethings you just have to get..
+evilasreligion What's an extra couple hundred bucks when you have an amp worth a couple grand haha
I use an ENGL Savage 120. Best amp in the world imo.
+Bryan Cox It's in my top 3 metal amps for sure! And it plays wonderfully with this pedal.
Can you tell me what is the function of the small button near the switch? Frequency work Regulators ?
Thanx for your video 🙏
It’s very clean. Can it be stacked for more gain?
Hi, nice review, thank you. I’m still trying to get this clean boost thing down. I’m running a Mesa Mark V 35 with a mini TS in front for the “boost” to play classic metal songs (Maiden, Metallica, slayer). Would the 33 make a big difference to the overall tone? Sounds like your saying no towards the end of the video.
+JFRiley I actually own a mini Tube screamer as well, and I can say the difference is night and day between it and the Fortin 33 on an 8 string, but a bit less pronounced on a 6 string. A TS will get you what you need for 80s and most 90s metal, but a clean boost won't color your amp as much (which I think is preferable since a Mark V is so great on its own). If you're not picky, I say stick to what's working for you, and you can always experiment with some cheap EQ and clean boost pedals.
Plague Scythe Studios thanks. Just so I’m understanding, are you saying the clean boost from the TS is preferable to the Fortin?
+JFRiley Tube Screamers are NOT clean boosts, as they boost certain frequencies over others and causes some signal distortion. The Fortin is basically a clean boost with a subtle EQ curve applied. For a six string, I think you'll get great results with a pure clean boost pedal (+20ish dB). Because of The Mark V's tone stack directly controlling what frequencies get driven, you can back down on the low end and push the mids for even more tone control.
I personally prefer clean boosts and EQ before an amp for modern material, and Tube Screamers/Super Overdrive for more classic metal.
Yesss!!!
+Awer Tyuiop My sentiments exactly.
Which one would you choose if you could only choose 1 between the 33, Grind and Precision Drive?
+Lionel Doss I'm glad I have what I have, though you should take that with a bit of bias as I'm a huge Meshuggah and Fortin fan. If they stopped making this pedal and the Grind is available, it's 95% as great from what I've heard and is totally worth it. I'd like to try the precision drive, but what I've heard doesn't make me want to drop another couple hundred on it.
I have the 33 and the precision drive i love them both for different reasons. I have the 33 in front of a laboga mr hector head and my ibanez rg2228 and it is Meshuggah. I love Meshuggah and that is my justification and its good for 1 sound and in my experience doesnt take well to all heads and especially guitars it can be picky. As for the precision drive it is very versatile you can get that stringy pong sound or djent tone with a variety of voicings to suit a wide range of guitar pickup and amp combinations as well as a killer gate that is superior to the mxr noise gate whitch i thought it was based off of and a relitavely transparent clean boost. I lovethem both for different reasons but if you have a decent 7 or 8 string and a high gain tube head like i have laboga laney vh100r. Or mesa rectiier and want that Meshuggah sound get the 33
Good stuff here, just subscribed, would you make a video how to achieve a similar boost with the AXE FX / Ax8 please?
+DemonHunter It's in the works!
Plague Scythe Studios great thanks for answering, looking foward to see it
The 33 is going to be a boost pedal to hit the front of your amp harder driving the preamp section harder and the grind pedal is actually more of a tonal overall eq pedal if I am not mistaken it's placed after the preamp section in his amps labeled as 6irth and 6rind and the grind pedal is mikes favorite settings to do some rolling off and tonally shaping the top end to cut through the mix. Other than that great video!
+bret miller Thank you! You definitely put the Grind pedal in front of the amp like any other overdrive, but you are correct about it being a one knob 6irth and 6rind control. It's a different way to control which frequencies are driven, especially compared to the 33 which uses a more constant high pass. Based on other demos, I'm still convinced there is a range between the two pedals where they will sound virtually identical, even if they achieve the sound in a different way.
You really nailed it right at 7:20... I have a heavily modded Mesa multi watt, Mercury transformers, etc. It's cool, but not at that price. I can get the same thing with a modded TS7 or 9. Or a boost and some compression.
+Adrian Stock This is definitely not a one size fits all product. I forsee boosts like this and the Grind catching on in the mainstream market, but for now I don't have a problem supporting one of my favorite tone crafters with a premium product.
Do you use any noicegate on the Ax8. Is it possible to create a loop between Ax8gate and ampsim?
+johan widegren Any noise gate you use before the amp block is applied "in the loop."
Plague Scythe Studios
So you use the 33 in the loop and not in front of the Ax8.
I mean that the gate should be first i chain to prevent possible issues.
+johan widegren Correct, I had to play with the input volume and padding but got it to play nice eventually. I couldn't tell that it made a difference in the loop vs in front of the AX8 the way I set it up, though
I wonder if this pedal will make my Randall T2 paired up with a Mesa oversized cab sound good.
+david drake Ola Englund paired this pedal with a solid state Randall and it slays. It goes great with the Thrasher I got a few weeks ago. Would highly recommend that combination.
+david drake I'm also using an oversized Mesa cab with V30s.
Plague Scythe Studios I had the Thrasher. I was impressed with the tone but it was just a little too loud for bedroom jamming.
🍻
Might seem like an odd question, but how does it sound on a clean channel?
+projectdc1 It really depends on how clean the clean channel is. On my amps, it seems to turn a "dirty" clean channel into a really nice crunch/mid gain channel. Without much gain though, it really just boosts the amp's volume, and obviously the frequencies most affected by the 33. Definitely not the same effect most would expect from something like a Tube Screamer or Super OD.
Thanks for the quick reply! I run a Mesa Mark IV and have been thinking of adding a 33 to my setup but channel switching is a concern. So I'm wondering how it might affect the clean sound were I to just leave the 33 on all the time. If it wouldn't add distortion, I may be able to get away with it. Anyway, thanks again for the insight.
+projectdc1 Oh cool. I'm actually in the middle of recording a song using the AX8's Mark IV model and a Fortin 33 approximation in the drive block, so I know it would slay on the lad channel. Im fairly confident that you could leave the 33 on and just compensate for it in the clean channel by lowering the gain, bumping the low end and turning down the highs and mids.
hello friend, what pedal do you think Revv g4 or G3 is better for extreme metal, or might fortin 33 or wrampler dracarys be better
You're comparing apples to oranges. The 33 boosts a high gain amplifier, the other pedals are meant to sound like a high gain preamp channel. It depends on what you already have.
Hey man, do you plan to get the Lundgren pickups?
+greaveybaby I don't on my Agile because I just upgraded to a more capable active set (I'll review them once I have more experience with them) . My next 8 string will have lundgrens without a doubt though.
Tight man! Could I PM you or video chat a bit about you're model Agile? I'm actually looking at purchasing that exact model and have been curious but a bit on the fritz ya know?
+greaveybaby Send me a PM and we can talk on discord. I'm on a trip right now but Ill get back to you this weekend
How is it meshuggah in a box if its just a clean boost
I love my Maxon OD808 all i need!
Really nice review! Some good observations. Made me not buy the pedal. I am gonna get the Fortin Fuzz though since it's a decent value product and pretty amazing sounding!
Where can i buy it ???
Crying baby nice touch for them whiners
Glad someone appreciates the tongue-in-cheek humor lol
Spare the whining. Fortin charges what he does because of supply(low) and demand(really high). If he lowered his prices, he wouldn't have a life. Maybe someday your studio will be in as much demand. I hope so;) Peace!
+MaverickWolf101 I can only hope, thank you!
