- Here, I make a third iteration of the bed for my 1999 Xplorer 230 XLWT Camper Van. I decided on a Faux Tempurpedic type of mattress made from bonding together two different types of foam. I try my hand at upholstery and talk a bit about why I like the new configuration and this particular van.

I'm buy my 2 Xplorer 230 just like Steve's and I still watch these videos to learn from this very smart diy guy thanks Steve
Aww i like how he doesn’t talk about seeing someone or dating someone but having another wife one day. Sweet guy.
Man your living my dream, I am glad I can watch your channel and live vicariously through it
This third iteration of the bed for your Xplorer is the most functional and well thought out. Great job Steve.
Ur next wife will appreciate all the handy things you can do! Hope u meet her soon, u have so much to offer as a well rounded person Steve!
It's beautiful stealth camper van you got there, Steve. Perfect size for me and my cat.
Man is their anything you can't do. I just Love the blue its beautiful nice work 👍😁👍
I enjoyed the pinching, pressing and especially the skootching.
You would!
🏳️🌈
Still have my Sailrite sail I built on a college dorm floor 20+ years ago. Good company. Great job on your upholstery, and thanks for sharing.
I have never been turned away from any RV park in 5 years of full timing. I have a 98 Newmar Mountain Aire.
The craftsmanship you put into all of your projects is inspiring. Thanks for another great video. 👍🏾
he has skills that I could only dream of having -
Your living the dream Steve!
Interesting video Steve... it is fun watching you improve the van over the years.
Definitely think that’s the best configuration so far
Very nice, Steve! I really admire your creativity, and you ability and willingness to learn new skills to get what you want.
Hi Steve Really Like the way you have finished up the van making it your own
Great video an always your precise upgrades are awesome. I bet you wished you had done this sooner. I’ve always admired your van from day one along with the videos of your upgrades and improvements. Thanks again for the video.
I love the new bed! You put a lot into that and the results were 100% professional quality. I'm shocked you can't feel the cracks though.
Another fine piece of work Steve. Nice job.
As always, nice work. Thanks for sharing.
Two single beds for married and one King size for single? After a couple of years, that sounds about right! 😁
Love your van, you also do good work. Nice video!
I have watched your channel for many years Steve and enjoyed every second of upgrades you have made. It would be awesome if you made a video with just clips of the upgrades over the years since you purchased the explorer, even if it has to be done in parts or series. You do exceptional work and so many people could learn from your precision and expertise. You throughly research before your projects and the perfection of your standards show in all the projects you have done. Thanks for another educational, but very enjoyable video.
Thanks for the kind words. That is a good suggestion that I have never thought of. We shall see.
Good show!
I’ve had several RVs, and not one has had a comfortable bed from the factory.
For each one it took me years of trial and error to refine my requirements and constraints, just as you describe.
Of course, soon after I have built a bed which suits me perfectly, I have moved to a new RV!
Thanks for showing us that no one needs to tolerate a less than perfect bed! It’s easy!
I agree.
Great job, thanks for your information!
Sure do enjoy your videos Steve👌🏼🥰
Our 1999 Class B Pleasure Way had thick back cushions on each side that I removed and stored... that gives us 3 more inches of width ( about 28 inches per side like a cot). My wife and I are pretty skinny so we just have the two sides without ever using the king size set up that was very inconvenient to set up and store. The back had a tower of drawers that I removed and made into a custom middle seat. I used a swinging arm mount for an LED TV on the right side cabinet as your facing it and a swinging arm mount for a all in one computer on the left side. Its pretty cramped but doable.
I have the same tv setup. Customizing is almost a given with any RV for sure.
Amazing job!
Love your videos, try and upload more often
Nice work!
Good show 👏 👍 true craftsman
great job!!!
Thanks Steve, great upgrade and a proof positive showing the 2 previous versions. I've had problems with flat beds ever since a goldwing accidnt in 97. I get my best sleep in a recliner.
In my 6x12 cargo trailer conversation.
I might try your faux temperpidic on a futon framework in my 15 passenger E350 tow vehicle that has the same 6x12 space from the drivers seat back. Just have lower ceiling and wheel wells to contend with. Thanks again Steve.
Glad to help
Great idea!
Very nice!
Howdy Steve! You know, I sitting here watching this video, and I just realized that I’ve been following you since the very beginning of your channel...CHEERS buddy 🍻
Oops, almost forgot...great job on the bed upgrade 👍🏼👏🏼
That is awesome!
Looks good! Time for some more exploring. I take it you aren’t a scoocher. 😁
Very nice.
Great to see a nice Van update.. I had a custom made memory foam mattress made for mine in California. Cant think of the name at the moment. But it was one of the best purchases i made. I like your bed space back there. I have a different layout in mine. Hope you are well Steve. Maybe one of these days we could meet when things get back to some what normal.
Gonna have to review your video on the shock absorbers. You like them?
@@XplorerSteveDIY Yes i do.. no complaints.. i always have some pressure in the air bags when traveling. So ride comfort isnt plush..they are Bilsten i believe.
@@XplorerSteveDIY im camped out at cold creek right now. Great view of the comet tonight. 👍
@@ZSharkPH It's just far enough away for that.
Smart guy you are ! !
2015! Whoooaaa I'm been watching you for that long! dang time is flying by
Thanks for the support all these years.
I like it too.
Hi, Steve! The new configuration is much better. The foam density part would be personal preference. I can’t wait to see a real use review video. Isn’t it time for a trip or is the virus keeping your wings clipped? Thanks for taking us along as you complete these projects. I learn something new with every video. 😎
Yep, Virus put a damper on this summer's plans. Lot of frustration from the full time RVer's on YT and so-mods and improvements.
Nice
Look much better
Hey Cosmo! Hey Steve!
Hey.
Great job man!, but what about the glue in between the foam? Not toxic? Not sure if its a good idea, have a nice weekend!
I hope you can help. I have a 2002 Dodge XPlorer in need of a window. The small window in the clearstory on top of the seat behind the driver’s side door. We had a local guy come look at it and he took the window never to be heard from again. Where do you recommend I get a replacement?
Hi Steve, another great project. If you don’t mind, can you provide link to the source of your bottom layer high density foam? Thanks
That was original to the Xplorer. Upholstery shops have a great selection.
This makes me want to attempt a thinner but more dense mattress, but maybe out of pool noodle style foam/ memory combo. I like a firmer bed but I also like having space, so a slim hideaway Murphy bed is what I would love to try.
I know the skootch in and out of bed well with the truck camper. Sometimes I go caterpillar style. I sleep on the worthless factory posture pedic mattress and improved it greatly with a 3" memory foam topper, much more comfortable. Take care.
Looks amazeballs XSD!
Now all you need to do is wrap the Xplorer purple and you'll be the envy of all!
Steve, Glad to see the improvements to the coach continue but hearing your comment about the Daughter made wonder if she is still employed by the City of Las Vegas or if the current situation has had a negative impact on her career?
The girl child hasn't been affected.
Hello Steve I just bought a 230 and my shower doors are in bad shape love the glass doors any help on what an where did you get them and part numbers thanks
Check out my video on the shower door install (good resource for you) . I believe it is there. Use search function on my home page.
You are doing what I wanted to do for a very long time. I am also divorced and currently living with my gf. We were looking into buying a class b rv but they are too expensive. A few years ago, we saw an old dodge rv like yours for sale in the area. We didnt bother looking into it because we thought it was too old and would not be reliable on long trips.
Anyway, to get to the question.....
1.) Is this vehicle reliable? I know dodge does not have a good reputation.
2.) Is it expensive or possible to replace the engine and transmission?
3.) What are the problems you faced having such an old rv.
4.) Have you been broken down yet?
The twin beds is why I jumped on the model when i found it. That's the way I have mine set up. When you go side to side across the back it's the same size as a XL Twin mattress.
Hi Xplorer Steve. What is your thought on the price of this camp van similar to tour’s
2000 Xplorer 230 XLW Wide Body Class B Motorhome - $23993
It’s on a dealer lot so I think it is $2500 higher than should be???
I enjoy all your vlogs and the split AC is a favorite
Thanks for the great content
Without knowing mileage and condition, it is in the ball park. I would never buy from a dealer because on top of the premium you pay sales tax. At the end of the day. they are worth what a person is willing to pay. Road Trek, Pleasure Way, Leisure Travel all make similar rigs. All are good. If they are old, know they are a project. I have worked on or switched out many things on mine but the water heater ..
Thank you for sharing your knowledge XS !!!
It has 75k mileage wise the inside looks very much like your van but there is a table behind the drivers seat instead of another chair.
What works in my favor is I live in Oregon where there is now sales tax but my experience is auto dealers jack up their base prices instead.
Thanks again
Sold! I’ll take one. When can you have my new mattress finished?
Ha. I think I have the same Ikea mattress as you in my 4RUNNER. Well. Don't like it. Will do the same thing.
Xplorer Steve DIY used to have an Ikea mattress. I learned that memory foam isn’t the best choice of foam. Been using a Fred Meyer foam mattress for a bit now. It’s not bad. But not great either.
hope you have your Xplorer for many years to come - don't think about the day that you might not be using it
There was a configuration where there was an East/West and a couch in the front.
Yup they pushed back the bath, you have a "queen" in the back and a couch in the front so you can sleep 4 comfortably. Problem is you lose storage and there is not enough storage for 4 people.
I agree with Jeff. This is my favorite configuration. The X is really a 1 or two person camper. The only thing I have been jealous of that I have seen is an electric bench seat in the back that, with a push of a button, would go flat and into a bed as it connected with the forward chairs. That area would be nice for having company on occasion.
I remember seeing you traveling with your daughter in your RV a few years ago at a van build, it seemed like a really great time for you both. Do you find the memory foam sleeps warm?
That was at the Canada meetup? The memory foam is fine. The warm narrative is pushed by competing mattress makers, I suspect.
yeah I did see you uys at the Canadian meet up and I thought in Arizona as well. I have one of those memory foam mattresses that sleeps really warm so I'm looking to upgrade....
I think the twin bed approach is great for people needing to get up during the night. But how are you doing the bedding (sheets and blankets)?
The side mattresses are the size of a 30" cot mattress and those sheets fit perfectly.
What Jeff said also, but I just use a sleeping bag/s rated for wherever I am going at the time. RV beds that hug the wall are a bear to make up in a traditional sheet/blanket setup.
@@XplorerSteveDIY Just wht I was thinking. 2 sleeping bags on either side for 2 people or If it's just you open them up east west, like a sandwich and you have a lot more room.
If I ever get married again.......😂 good one
Thanks Pepe.
♥️♥️♥️my idol
Hi Steve, I'm in the market for a sewing machine that can handle very heavy duty fabrics as well. Can you tell me what machine that is? Great job with the bed reconfiguration and design!👍🏻👍🏻
The Consew 206rb and it's clones come to mind. Pricey though. This little machine can do most of what those do but at a smaller scale. Smaller price. Don't know what you mean by "Very heavy" though.
NorthStar Great Danes depending on the scale of the project a sewing awl is an option. I had to use one to repair a pop up and manufacture pull straps out of seat belt webbing.
@@XplorerSteveDIY I want to be able to sew several layers of heavy fabrics like denims/duck fabrics.
How do you rate your faux tempur-pedic to an actual manufactured mattress?80% as good as a factory mattress? Better or worse? Excellent video btw. Subscribing
Too early to rate. In time though.
Xplorer Steve DIY I will be interested to hear an update
Steve how can I get ahold of you
Like most UA-camr's I keep my personal life separate from YT life and so most correspondence is limited to the comments. I usually don't engage outside of that and feel it suffices for the purposes of the channel content.
You know you have the sewing machine already so why not update the cushion covers and maybe even curtains. Great work tho Steve
Those curtains are stellar. Love them. The upholstery is in amazingly good shape and so, no. Yota Doug, Man after my own heart. Need more tool reviews...
Hahahah I used to build them , In Brown city Michigan
Oh. Out of curiosity, On some other project, I noted the top had a styrofoam fill between the outer and inner shells. does that extend to the entire fiberglass portion of the top?
Xplorer Steve DIY i’m pretty sure it does I didn’t work in that area that was a separate building that made the raised roofs and back half sections , I was doing the carpet , and wiring , The very beginning stage of the build .
How tall are you? I'm 6'3" and wondering if I would fit!
Got it! 5'11"
Diagonal would be comfy. The space is a full king. Not a California king.
When we bought our trailer the mattress/seat pads seemed adequate, but the cushions lost a lot of cush over the years. I wish I had seen your video years ago. Meanwhile, we sold the trailer.
Cosmo Headley
needs to make more appearances
One of the pleats on the back curtain was a bit skew, un-liked and unsubscribed..;-) Good job Boet.
LOL - very unlike Steve to have a curtain out of place......he's become a slacker.
My favorite video of yours was you burning your divorce papers.
Galaxy foam has bad service. I don’t like them.
Never had a problem.
