    The bully is often incredibly gregarious with forming a positive social connection and charm of the manager as well.

      A very good point you raise - bullies can often be very good at managing upwards. I personally have been fooled for a time. Asking for team member feedback and keeping an eye on interactions between team memebrs is useful in helping spot those bullies who are good at managing upwards. J

      I've seen this from someone who was not only a bully, but also narcissistic. As soon as she started, she pushed her way into interactions with management to show her "good" and "helpful" character, and then spread her tentacles in search of anyone she could use to promote her self-image. Despite causing at least 4 people who would otherwise have stayed, to leave, management will not hear a word against her.

    Changing behaviour could entice, reward, the bullies. I 'defend' by sticking to work and keep outperforming. Once I detected bullying from inferior co-workers, it became ridiculous to let them be the arbiters of moral standard or just about anything. Learning about the dark traits of personalities and toxic work environments, and applying stoic principles, have been helpful.

      How you manage bullying is such a personal thing. I am glad you have an approach that works well for you. If one approach doesn't work that well, try another. I do think it is important for managers to keep an eye for signs of bullying within their team or to their team members. Bully is very damaging as well as being horrible to experience.

      Most bullies target great performers, yes you are a threat to their lazy incompetence, you are encouraging the organization to do better, and expecting better work performances from all the other toxic loses who don't want to do better on any level, so you are the target get you gone. Some workplace have more than one bully some work in teams and will play like they are your friend beware and becareful few to no one is your friend at work, most are gossipy and love to ad extra logs to the fire, because what you say about your self, better to keep anything about yourself private.. bullies will use anything you say against you and adding more lies to the gossips they spread, it all about destroying you, managers today are stupid and love to listen to it some even actually believe and enjoy it. So beware.

    Good list and I've experienced things from all the lists presented. Bullies are deceptive sociopaths, they usually feel nothing for others and can be very narcissistic, willing to cause others to lose their jobs to help theirs or make them look good. They dont care if you end up on the street or how much your family suffers due to their behaviour, all they care about is themselves. If I am ever a manager and I so much as hear a squeak of a bully, I will take every disciplinary action available and applicable to the situation. I'll ensure that person thinks twice before trying to bully again.

      @caroltruffa6811 I agree - bullies get good at hiding their bullying and pulling the wool over the eyes of people in authority (they have to so they can carry on bullying). It is hard being in a managers shoes with two different versions of events - which do you believe? That is why evidence and examples is so important. Good management will jump into action to help you. Poor management may become part of the problem. It is really tough to be bullied at work, no matter who you are and your confidence levels.

      Which version will the manager believe? Let me rephrase and clarify...
      Who does the manager "need" more?
      Who stays and who goes depends on which person is more likely to
      be more employable elsewhere
      AND who is less likely to file and have a credible case with any labor relations entity.

    A experienced manager that is actually interested in making the workplace a great workplace would know how to go forward, however there is a lot of managers that are seriously incompetent close minded and completely not interested in any of team building concerns they believe they are smarter than the teams and do not consult anyone on the team. Such managers usually destroy great organizations.

A manager not doing anything about bullying damanges trust. If trust falls, team performance falls. Managers are judged on team performance so every manager should care!

      I can assure you some do (myself ex manager) today witnessed something I thought I never thought I’d see in a professional company that holds it values so highly I’m literally on here right now because I don’t know what todo (I’m not a manager at this company) I’m just the new guy first week day 4 and I’ve witnessed Toxicity and unprofessionalism on a astonishing level making fun of appearances and weight etc on their new team leader (not me) another person that joined the same time as me.
      There’s literally no senior staff present longest serving staff is 8 months and then ofc manager and team leaders two of them one of which is in training along with me and the other I charge of the whole team while we’re in training (learning company system etc) today was a fucking zoo is the only way I can explain quiet afternoon so everyone was talking to each other being very loud and the occasional call which would be answered by very rude members of staff with no soft skills what so ever. I was about to lose my mind and scream in the middle of the office from what I saw and heard all this was done infront of other departments and because no senior member of staff or leader/ manager present at the time on the floor there was literally 0 discipline and quite frankly I’m not sure wtf todo because this is like a dream job of mine and I’ve finally got it and now I’m here and seeing this I feel disgusted. Disgusted because I’ve seen how the company operates and it’s professional through and through then there’s my department and it’s literally the equivalent to detention with our teachers or adults just complete bedlam
      Think I’ll be having words with my trainer on Monday and if can’t come to some understanding I’m gonna have to leave and find somewhere else which fucking sucks because I genuinely WANT this job.

      I feel you, sis. Going through the exact situation. I was forced to leave previous company last year October, or risk termination + black-mark record on my resume which will decrease my chances of being hired in the future. I received job offers too, but I sabotaged myself & didn't take up on the offers, due to lingering trauma & fear I'll experience another set of workplace bullies + same abuse cycle all over again. Not to mention going through conpany's bodyguards a.k.a. HR, who may show initial support, but backtracked on me or you later on, at the behest of bullies (who can be quite persuasive with their own victim narratives, manipulation & threats) + the depression affecting us, etc.
      Right now, I don't know the right answer to deal with (future) workplace bullies, while you get to keep your job safely. I can only hope & pray the next company won't be as toxic. I hope you'll get or have gotten some side gigs to support you, especially during emergencies + eventually, a better work company who treats you better 🙏🏼

    Withholding information is SUCH a big thing. I was victim of this often. Thank you for bringing this up
    Oh also a new thing: it depends on the work surroundings but I've once worked on a canadian farm with 2 mean french girls from france and belgium who were new there, too. The girl who told us the instructions was french, too (I can't speak french) and she explained everything in french so that I got excluded and made mistakes. They also gossiped right next to me in their language and even tho I didn't understand every word, I knew they talked about me. I had to ask them about every task so they made me dependent on them. The constellation 2 against 1 played a role, too. I feel like this would have never happened if it was only one girl and me. But anyways. I'm back in Germany now, thriving in a field they thought I wasn't capable of doing ;)

      A very similar thing happened to me. I worked on a production line and was new. The more experienced people are supposed to teach you and show you the ropes. Instead they withold information from you, exclude you from discussions on whats happening, and gossip constantly behind your back. And unfortunately the area I work in, most of the guys are like this. It makes people very unproductive and the entire team and company suffers as a result. Either way, I have a game plan. And I realized most are very threatened by me, thats why they dont want to show me anything, in case I get ahead of them. Thats the case more often than not, insecure people who dont want to share knowledge.

    • @stellameii

      @@c.b.295 thank you for sharing! Good to know I'm not alone with this experience. Sometimes I really was thinking I'm the weird one or the freak because I didn't do anything to them and they behaved like this. One girl once shouted at me "now it's too late!!" when I just followed her instructions and made a mistake. So basically, she made me do a mistake to ridicule me afterwards. I was actally older than her and she was so disrespectful still. And you are totally right. They know you are good and feel competitive.

    • @c.b.295
      @c.b.295 8 місяців тому +1

      @stellameii That's one of their tactics to try and belittle and undermine you, by setting you up to fail a task or look bad. They will then blow it entirely out of proportion to make you feel like you made a horrible mistake. I've had this happen too. But it's definitely not you and you aren't a freak, this is very common and it happens alot at my workplace, so much that good people left the company because of horrible co workers that treat them like trash. And I work for a multi billion dollar company, just our factory has over 1400 employees. You'd be shocked that a company that is so big has such bad people employed there. Its a sad reality. I'd leave but the salary and benefits are very good. I have a game plan to change the sector I'm in as there are much better areas with better people, I'm literally in the worst section on the worst shift, and I've spoken to others that know it too. So dont worry you aren't alone and dont blame yourself. Even if you do great, those sorts of people will never be happy and always try put you down.

    • @Enhancetraining
      @Enhancetraining  8 місяців тому +1

      @stellameii - I agree withholding information is a big thing and a big problem. It is easy to withhold information, relatively low risk in terms of undermining behaviour and harder to prove than many other bullying actions. The leaders in the team set the tone of behaviour. There is lots that managers can to stop team members withholding information - such as very visibly sharing information themselves, asking people directly and publicly to share information and expertise and so on. Insecurities can get the best of all of us at times.

She’s also made me physically read out my emails to her so she can find a fault, to the point one time she told me have I proof read my email? I said yes what’s wrong with it? She said ok read it to me, so I started.. nothing told me to read the next paragraph again nothing. Eventually she said oh must just be me must have been another email.. I feel so degraded I have dyslexia and she knows this, my spelling will never be perfect even with tools to help. I stood up for myself today and said she’s done spelling mistakes so have my colleague and so have many others across the department but they never get highlighted so why are mine. If she's mistreating you/singling-you-out for a learning disability, you may have a legal claim against her. If HR doesn't help, you may want to speak with an employment lawyer. This doesn't mean you have to sue your company. Sometimes a strongly-worked email from a person of authority (i.e. lawyer) can do wonders for getting HR to actually do something in your favour. The last thing the company wants is a lawsuit and potentially bad press.

    Covert bully can be disguised as routine performance management (supervision, feedback), which give covert bully legitimacy and protection for the bully. Bullying needs to be defined in legislation as far more than overt bullying witnessed by others and an assault on the physical person.

    • @Enhancetraining
      @Enhancetraining  Місяць тому

      Covert bullying is much worst than overt - because it is so much harder to deal with. Legislation is only useful if authories police and use it. I believe managers and leaders have a very important job to set the tone within an organisation and to root out and deal with bullying and other negative behaviours. This is in the interests of everyone including the leaders (except the bullies of course).

      May I suggest that you talk in general terms (without naming specific people) while in public, and then have conversations in private with specific people. I think it is important to follow "praise in public, criticise in private". You suggest that your team does not respect you as much as you want... have I got that right?...How do you feel towards your team? How are you helping them as a manager (which leads to earning their respect as a manager)? Maybe worth thinking about both questions?

    Having a lead always yelling at you. Having you leave main job, to start a secondary job, then asking you to help over in another area, but never allows you time to finish the second job. Then orders you back to the main job, because your co worker isn't keeping up. Then gets mad because I have not finished the second job....

      @BooBahh-uh5jk sounds like the manager is totally unrealistic. I can't see you "winning" or having a reasonable time at work if this is the case - maybe find a better job in a company with a better culture...

      I ended up quiting without notice. Pray for me. My body is very thankful. The day before I quit we had a new hire who worked with the lead for 1 shift and he never came back. It didn't help seeing other departments getting new hires, but not the warehouse. Plus my co worker who was half my age was doing less than me and also he was using me for his therapist.
      There was no moving up in this company either.

    There is a real need for understanding and help for 'isolated workers' such as those in Community Support. Platform Technology seems to have exacerbated this as well as increased the 'very real isolation' of these employees. It is a large part of the workforce allied to healthcare. The consequences range from financial (income.... as work can be withheld), through to physical (acknowledged by GP's) and Mental Safety at Work (covered under H&S, but as with much H&S this workforce fall through some large gaping cracks.

    • @Enhancetraining
      @Enhancetraining  2 місяці тому

      @jaynelong-taylor791 - you raise really good points. With more working from home, hybrid working and getting work through technology platforms - there are less people around to provide support and these workers are more isolated than workers were in the past (when working next to team members etc). I can imagine that the opportunity to be bullied, be overworked, be treated unfairly etc have gone up as a result.

    We all can go on giving videos of examples but this is an old age happening but nothing changes, the bullies retain their jobs or get promoted and you're classed as not a good fit and removed from you job. Until the government recognises this is a serious threat to people's mental health and none productive financially for the company as well as losing good productive staff. What they don't tell you companies encourage psychopaths and Narcs fearing of greater threats from these people. The first time I experienced these evil acts of bullies and the pathological liars was 15 years ago, nothing changed since just greater threats using the system to cover themselves. The victims look edt to battle through tons of paperwork to prove their innocence while in the mean time they continue to gaslighting the victim.

    • @Enhancetraining
      @Enhancetraining  9 днів тому

      Humans are social creatures and form groups. All groups have some kind of pecking order. When you combine power, insecurities and fears, and groups it seems there will always be some that use bullying to protect themselves or their position in some way. They find it easier and less effort to put others down rather than lift themselves up. J

  • @binilee4753
    @binilee4753 9 днів тому

    Just a neverending story repeating over and over. What we like to know, when this will ease or stops? As I understand Pathological liars, bullying, and Narcissistic staff are on the increase more so than ever. I hope eventually they all jammed in working in the same companies that retain these behaviours and see how long the company survives. Because in the end they will all give each other their deadly venom, this is enough to bring a company down.

  • @binilee4753
    @binilee4753 9 днів тому

    You get no protection, neither by the manager or above them. Other colleagues are bystanders, asked for support from them will only get you thrown under the bus to keep their job.

    • @Enhancetraining
      @Enhancetraining  9 днів тому

      The good managers and the good companies will absolutely protect staff from bullies - it is 100% in their own interests to do so. Bully destroys trust and teamwork, which in turn seriously damanges individual and team performance. Unfortunately there are too many managers that don't put in the effort to spot bullying or to tackle bullies. I suspect a good portion of these managers simply don't know what to do.

    • @Enhancetraining
      @Enhancetraining  Місяць тому

      @sandhiyad194 - the legal routes depend on your country laws. For example, in the UK you need to be in your job for more than 2 years before you get some legal protection. You would still have to take the company to tribunial which is time consuming and costly. Easier to spend the time and energy getting a better job in a better company in most cases. J

      Recording colleagues or managers proably won't be looked on very favourably by the company and should only be used as a last resort. Are you able to write down exactly what she said and how she said (along with where and when). Would your colleagues back you up or provide their own examples? The more people raising the same issue, the more action favourable to you will happen. J

    • @Enhancetraining
      @Enhancetraining  5 місяців тому

      I think this depends on how often this happens. If it is a one-off or a rare occurance, then in my opinion no it is not bullying (we are all human and make mistakes etc). If tlosing your temper happens regularly then it could be argued you are trying to intimidate and therefore could be bullying. J

    • @Enhancetraining
      @Enhancetraining  2 місяці тому

      @jeffknowlton5200 - I would suggest finding other ways of coping when feeling stressed or in conflict? I would argue behaviour that damages relationships is going to lead to more stress and conflict which creates an even bigger problem for that person. J

    • @jeffknowlton5200
      @jeffknowlton5200 2 місяці тому

      @Enhancetraining I agree that having maladaptive coping behavior and not handling stress or conflict well shows emotional immaturity. A person with those issues probably needs help. Or he or she has some mental health or neurological issues and may need help for that. As for bullying, I think that comes with a different mindset. Bullies need a victim and they want to harass others. They'll harass and mistreat someone even if there is no stress or conflict present.

    • @Enhancetraining
      @Enhancetraining  Місяць тому

      @jeffknowlton5200 I agree that many bullies personally feel better about themselves when they are putting others down. Horrible but true. I have not yet met a person that is confident and happy with themselves and who is also a bully.

      I disagree. It is in the company's and management's interests to stop bullying. Bully damages trust, which in turn damages team performance. Plus on top of this the company exposes itself to legal and reputational risk and potential damage/cost. Added to that - who likes to be bullied - so there is a moral obligation too. I appreciate these compelling reasons may not change some peoples actions.
