She isn't deaf. She's mute and that's why she signs. The lip ring is a symbol of her being a mute in this society. That's why the ring disappears when they use the camera or are in the "fantasy" portion of their time together.

She is mute, not deaf. She can hear the cube passing the mall ceiling and respond to the sound surroundings. The ring in her lips is a sign for her mute. That why only her using the sign language. I've been a uaena for 12 years now and I can tell you from the very beginning IU has that uncanny ability to stir up emotions I'm people just with her voice. It's very evident here and it really is, to me anyway, the main reason why she is the top female solo artist in korea.
I always say that there’s so many incredible artists in the world… but there’s no one like IU. She is just on another level.

Oh my goodness… you absolutely need to continue watching IU as an actress… she has so many incredible roles…
There are so many layers of story telling and metaphors and the director has explained what the storyline is. It’s a beautiful way for him to convey the message. In addition to this one part of my interpretation is based on the fact that Tae is blind in one eye and has burn scars around that eye. You can see at the beginning he is looking vulnerable, fragile and afraid. IU is leading him and is protective throughout. My interpretation is that he had encountered the cube before and narrowly escaped being captured and so is going through all the emotions from it. At the end, you see IU trying to protective him by picking up the metal bar because (to me) she knows what he went through and wants to protect him. And Tae taking the bar and attacking the cube looks to me like he knows what the cube is capable of and despite his fear of it, he wants to protect her and has rage built up in him for what the cube is doing to them. At the end it didn’t work and you can see the cube glow red with heat and smoke coming off their bodies (burn marks around his eyes). The ending was so poignant.
The song was amazing and felt more epic because of the storyline and visuals. They have great chemistry, first with the amazing duet they did on IU’s Palette and now with their acting skills, not to mention their interactions as friends. It’s so good to see Tae being able to express his acting skills even in a 5minute short. I hope he starts doing movies on his return. This movie really makes everyone feel emotional and they did that with their facial expressions, truly stunning. IU is queen for a reason and Tae our idol of idols never disappoints in his unique take on life and the choices he makes, whether to make an album of music he likes or to act in a short film all choices with a sad, emotionally moving ending. He wants his artistry to move us emotionally rather than hit the top spots on charts. Love these two artists. It’s time to stop calling this kpop.
Such a gorgeous song and powerful m/v. They could have just had her covering shielding both eyes, but they made the creative choice to make one of his eyes blind, and that simple change makes it so much more heartbreaking to me. She shields his vision while singing their love will persevere no matter what, and it makes me cry even harder.
I knew IU was an amazing actor (she was incredible in the film Broker), but this was a revelation to me for V.

Someone calls this an era of great hatred.
It certainly doesn't seem to be a time when love is prevalent.
In a gray world that is growing colder with evident hostility and indifference, it feels absurd sometimes to hope that one can win with the invisible weapon of love.
However, from my personal experience, even in its moments of triumph, hatred is always alone.
On the other hand, no matter how it escapes, becomes broken or fades away, love is stubbornly together.
Love has a good chance of winning.
This song tells the story of those who try to love to the very end, in a world that prevents them from loving.
By the way, for this album which contains five tracks, there are two songs which I dedicate to my loved ones, especially to my fans, and one of them is ‘Love wins all’.
From the age of 18, when I suddenly received great love that changed my life overnight, until now - there hasn’t been a single day that I didn’t imagine it ending. It feels vaguely lonely, scary and I thought it was a natural thing to happen. However, upon thinking about that everyday for over a decade, my attitude towards it started to change little by little.
Right now, it doesn’t scare me that much anymore. I don’t think I will feel greater regret nor loneliness when that moment comes. Above all, I don’t think it is coming anytime soon.
The reason why I, a pessimistic child full of worries, was able to change this much in the meantime is because I have people who tirelessly reassured me every day for the past decade. Thanks to them, looking back, I have never been alone even just for a moment in my life as IU.
To my diligent fans who have never left me alone, I want to express my gratitude for endlessly nurturing love in my inherently obstinate heart.
Also, I want to say thank you so much for choosing to stay by my side for reasons that I still don’t fully understand.

Starting off with a minimal and vintage piano intro and ending in a maximum outro, this ballad with a clear narrative arc continues IU's grand ballad series, which has been well-loved by fans, consisting of songs such as ‘Secret’, ‘Dear Name’, ‘Love poem’ and ‘My sea’.
In the second half of the song, the vocals swirl as if in a battle and the instrumental arrangement is reminiscent of a grand symphony, maximizing the emotions conveyed. I'm in such a mess each time I watch the MV. The story, the message, the feels, IU's voice, and their acting always get me into a mess. Such a beautiful and sad MV.

Glad to hear that you finished My Mister recently. It is the most healing and uplifting work I've seen ever, signaling a hopeful future for anyone, regardless how dire a situation one may be in at the moment. IU was phenomenal as the leading actress in that heartachingly beautiful role. Yes, IU is such a model artist. This MV fulfills all my expectations (however hefty), but the acting is simply overwhelming.
PS: I've read that IU is deaf (or/and mute) and One of V's eyes is blind. The director of the MV mentioned that the cube symbolizes discrimination. Yet love is what helps you see the beauty of the world regardless the circumstances.
WOWZERS, the info about wanting to put awareness on discrimation... genius and beautiful! That makes me want to cry again hahah- and omg, My Mister is my top 3 favorite K-Dramas of all time. Such a creative story that somehow becomes relatable with a lot of our realities. The quote that her grandma said in the last episode will ALWAYS get me: "if you take the time to think about it, each and every interpersonal relationship is quite fascinating, and precious. We must repay them; live a happy life. That's how you can repay the people in your life." TEARS!!!

This is the best MV I have ever seen in a long time. I feel so lucky to witness this MV being released.
I met IU on a drama which had me in tears. Then I saw her sing with JHope, Suga, and V on her show The Pallette. Through BTS I then watched some of her solo work, her vocals are amazing. Their portrayal of love in this MV was so impactful and I was so locked into the visuals. IU's vocals with the MV had me in tears too. Their loneliness had their imagination visualise a happier and brighter time for them regardless of the pending doom from the cube. Through the lens they wanted to see and experience happier moments. I loved it.

2:40 WOW! You're the first one who mentioned 'A Quiet Place' besides me. When I first saw the MV I said this is AQP meets with 'Arrival 2016' movie. No wonder this looks like a movie btw, it's directed by Um Tae-hwa who did 'Concrete Utopia' movie too. I watched this MV like 20 times already, but still crying every time when I see the last scene. The best thing in the story of the MV is that you can interpret many ways.

If you ignore the mv, the song is pretty funny in a meta way. Since her last album IU has got a boyfriend and this is definitely a 'first year in the relationship' super-sincere love song. Her last love song before this was 'Flu' 😄
Hi Tina! Love this reaction, as always very personal y filled with wmption. I absolutely love this song and MV, IU has this way with words and emotions that I haven't felt in any other artist so far. I'm sure other comments explain the story a bit already (although is always fun to have personal perspectives) but to add a bit to it, I read that the lip rig she has is more like a chain to represent the lack of communication in trying to understand each others differences, that's why she doesn't have it in her Love Filter mode, I might be wrong though but I find it interesting in also show how IU has every detail cover to represent something. There's also inspiration from and art piece I think in the mountain of clothes that appear (but idk to much about that yet) and When she hugs V at the end u can see she taps him 3 times which means "I Love You".

As soon as the video was posted, the unique video aesthetics of director Um Tae-hwa, who directed the passionate performance of IU and BTS V, resulted in 'nth viewing' (t/n: repeated viewing) by not just uaena, but music listeners as well Regarding the main keywords that led to the 'nth viewing', her agency released this interpretation guide and short interview with director Um Tae-hwa.
1. The "square" (t/n: cube) chasing after the main characters The identity of 'square', which relentlessly pursues the two of them, is the most divided among the fans (t/n: It is actually a cube, but calling it a 'square' is a more explicit way of describing a discriminatory world that only squares fit and not circles). Fans responded with various theories, such as, alien forces that have occupied the world", "zombies infected with a virus' and 'ghosts that cause odd phenomena (t/n:). It's been a while since a music video made me cry like a little kid. IU's voice is just that impactful.
Correct me if I am wrong but I think IU said she wrote it for her fans. I think it is a sweet commentary of their parasocial relationship. My interpretation is IU is IU and V is Uaena (her fans). The cubes are trolls/ media. In the MV, she is deaf/mute, he is partially blind - it may seem there is no fathomable way these two can understand each other. However, whether separated by language (she cannot hear/speak) or distance (he cannot see), they communicate about sweet memories (about macroons and taking pictures) and laugh much like inside jokes between IU and her fans or photos at fanmeetings. They both have scars of criticism or scandals over the years. At its end the trolls/ media come to consume another artist and fandom and discard it like a pile of clothes and IU is ready to fight but V (the fans) steps in front of her to defend her and their bond, but they are met with a bitter end. A sad reality every artist must face someday. She sheilds V's good eye to protect him from the inevitable. I think she understands the way it is but is happy to set out on the journey with her fans anyway. I think of her lyric "Will you courageously set with me? Destroy me slowly and chilly, ruiner"; OR this is just about her and her boyfriend, and her asking for some privacy, not sure haha.😭😭😭😭

IU has such a gorgeous emotive voice, and I love to listen to her. But I do most of my listening while driving and I can't put her in my playlists because I can't drive and sob at the same time.😅🙈
So if you watch the scene where they’re at the dinner table with the camcorder, it looks like she’s using sign language to talk to him…and his blue eye has a scar near it which makes me think he’s blind in that eye, due to whatever catastrophe fell upon the world. So he’s already deaf and blind in one eye, if he loses that other eye he’s gonna be lost and helpless in this weird cubic hellscape they find themselves in. So I wonder if she protects his eye like even though they’re gonna die, she won’t let him feel helpless even for a moment.
Then again, maybe SHE is deaf…hmmm. But it is interesting, when they look through the lens of the camcorder they see the world as how it used to be. Kinda reminds me of NewJeans Ditto m/v where the girl only saw her friends when she was looking through the camera lens but her reality was that of severe loneliness.

Its just heartbreakingly beautiful...every time I watch it, I do so with bated breath, goosebumps and tears.
Each of the frames in the video has its own symbolism. The cube symbolizes social expectations, social pressure and racial hatred. If you don't line up, you can easily fail. V's blindness and IU's silence also contain a kind of symbolism. See the message clearly, listen to your voice. The people in the hall wearing black hoods symbolize the anonymous haters. The greatness of the director is shown by the fact that the broken window expands the horizon to the whole world through the glass. Showing love is a power that makes you see the world with different eyes. The two main characters may have lost this fight, but the story has a powerful message for young dreamers. See clearly, hear your voice, fight for your dreams, because the world is ripe for change.

IU produced and did the lyrics. her mvs always have deeper meaning. There's a sign (1:24) when they first come in to the place when they find the camcorder that reads " " RISE FOR ALL" ...think thats a social commentary for the oppressors and for state of world , esp. these days. Most missed that sign..cause IU and V are so captivating. lol IU can't speak and V cant see out one eye... cube is like hate/society projections.Maybe we have to start standing up for love and for others discriminated or oppressed?
I feel IU and V have seen so much of how South Korea media, police and citizens can cause so much hate, pressure and judgement that people start to commit suicides at times. IU has known least 3 close idol young friends that exp this. Also recently, in headlines. Famous Actor from oscar winning movie "parasite" had recently passed due to all the pressure of media police, even though he was found negative in his drug tests. IU was main lead actress to him in a different show called. "My Mister". What an amazing message and masterpiece, truly deserves a Award in every category.

They looked normal to each other when they looked at each other through the camera. The evil cube sees them as inferior or imperfect and wants to destroy them. At the end you could see smoke rising so yes I believe the evil cube was burning them because you could see their ashes in camera view while their clothes were being lifted on the pile of clothes. I think it’s the best movie I’ve seen since the 3rd hour of Oppenheimer. I had a few comparisons for what this could mean, but I saw a statement from IU about her fans request. I think it’s a song for people who can only enjoy pretend weddings. She represents non-conformity here with disabilities. The rigid boxes of conformity are coming for you. She shows how a loving couple lives and loves as the best way to stand up against conformity.
It does have a live with joy until you die message that seems even more plain, like keep loving each other, fight the machine, and martyr yourself for the cause. It is very sad. I’ve been crying for 3 days. Believe me, the viewers understand your reaction. It’s interesting in some men, they are simply surprised “I feel like crying”. When V left for the military, he said he left different gifts. I thought this video would be a gift like other songs. I didn’t know they were providing worldwide catharsis.

It’s a line I was waiting for the perfect place to put it in, because I’ve been wanting to incorporate this into my lyrics for a long time.
Q. What was the most memorable Behind Spotlight for you while filming for ‘Love wins all’ music video?
IU: The most memorable for me was running, running, and running again.
It happened to be a day when the temperature had dropped sharply, my body kept shivering so it was hard to run, but I was glad that the result captured that expression well and made it look more realistic.
