I was actually against that war. Based on the chain of events, it's clear that people were killed because Thatcher wanted to win an election. No other reason. So people will likely think I'm about to sympathise with the Argentinians on this matter.

The bit that really got me was when the Argentinian ambassador in London demanded that the BBC and Top Gear apologise for the incident but if you ask me the people who need to apologise were the Argentinians. Yes it was a war, and people died I'm not trying to diminish that (my uncle was almost killed on Goose Greene) but the reaction was totally out of proportion and if it were me I would flatly refuse to apologise until the Argentinians did. They hounded a crew out of the country and all things considered it could've got serious and violent. A total and utter overreaction.

In all fairness they shouldnt have done the thing with the plate. I dont think Hammond or May were on this. This was clearly Jeremy Clarkson;s idea. Others think it was coincidence but I bet my ass it was Clarkson who planned to buy that car even before coming to Argentina. The others were not aware about it.
He either saw that car on the Internet or someone told him about it way before. You see how Hammond says- they wanted THAT CAR model in specific and I bet Clarkson was the one who asked for THAT specific model.
Also Argentinians are sensitive about The Falklands because they lost the war. So Britain cant demand someone to apologize for still being angry over a lost war. Just for comparison: 9/11 was not even a war and only 3000 Americans died and yet Americans are still angry af about it. They were so pissed they set the whole middle east on fire.
So it is in bad taste to accuse someone for feeling angry over a lost war or for being humiliated. National pride was hurt that day- it was not just a war for them. They dislike the British a lot and I cant blame them. The British and Americans are hard to like because both are arrogant twats.
You ask too much from Argentinians. After all it was not them who invited Top Gear there so u cant ask anyone to apologize for not wanting strangers in their home.
People have a right to be jerks to uninvited guests anyway. You cant ask a host to apologize when u werent invited there even .

@@robotube7361 the registration plate for that exact car was registered in 1991 (use DVLA REG plate checker to check). Meaning that years before he was even recruited to the TV show jeremy would have had to buy that car and registration plate, on the off chance that decades later he would use it to possibly piss off some idiots in Argentina.
Are you really that basic? The show bought the car for filming a few weeks before they began filming, there's 2 of them in the UK. They didn't change the REG plate because in all of human history up to that point, nobody has been offended by 3 letters on a car REG plate.

You know something, the BBC and the British government need to demand an apology from Argentina. Now listen up and read before you mash the reply button. UN Appendix 1 Article 4 of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism requires the host country to protect foreigners and their possessions. Argentina is a signatory to this, and as such is beholden to be upheld to this standard. They didn't live up to their obligations, the Top Gear crew committed no crimes, and the records show that the license plate was an honest mistake. It was offensive but that does not provide Argentina the excuse to allow them to fall into this kind of danger. And the fact that Argentina, as is typical of their government, pointed the finger away from their own shortcomings in their obligations to international law, and had the audacity to demand an apology from the BBC. Absolutely deplorable.

The best thing the Argentineans could have done would be to have embraced it. Top Gear is seen globally and had they chosen to play Jeremy, Richard and James at car football then everyone watching would have smiled with happiness.
Besides, if an Argentinean film crew came to the UK making a show of their own on something they would never in a million years be put through such an ordeal. In my view that whole thing was backwards ass behaviour from a backwards ass country. Beautiful as Argentina might be they have a lot of growing up to do. But like James said on the show the people they met were very welcoming up till reaching the southern tip of the country. So perhaps its maybe that region alone.

I'm from Argentina and it might sound weird but people is giving less and less importance to the islands. Especially young people like myself. We just got tired of it and also, we are very conscious that if Argentina tried to start a war with the UK, we would obviously loose. Also, we know that the government want them back because of all the petroleum but the thing is that there isnt any left because the british took it all. Actually, it's quite the government's fault because they say that British people hate us and laugh about us and shit but the truth it's that British people dont give a fuck about the islands.
I agree with you and I think is a thing about the region. We aren't very nice people but when it comes to tourist, we try our best to help them to have a good experience (at least in Buenos Aires). I think that maybe it's a thing about the South, particularly in Usuahia. God, in Chubut (one of the provinces from the South) there are places that are based in Welsh culture.
I, as an Argentine, do I think is was wrong what they did to the crew? Yes. It's terrible. It's barbaric. But I also think that they shouldn't blame all of us for what happened. I know they've been lately doing a lot of jokes about it in the show and saying that Chile is better and shit. Okay, maybe it's not worth it for filming, but at one point the crew was being headed towards a roadblock of 300 cars meant to stop the convoy and... presumably give an opportunity to the argentinian hooligans to attack the crew mercilessly. Why weren't there enough cops to STOP the road block? Oh, and ARREST all the people throwing rocks at them, and the people behind the roadblock?! Either the Argentinian government is incompetent and under funded or complicit. Also, Alicia Castro can go FUCK HERSELF. How dare she claim an apology from Top Gear? I can understand the English people's reaction on this matter but I also understand the Argentinians. I wonder how the English would feel if Argentina had occupied some islands next to England and populated them with Argentinians. Honestly, would you feel it's OK? These are the reminiscences of colonialism that still create problem. British, Dutch or French this and that around the world. They got a lot less in the second half of last century but there are still a few left that needs to be fixed. Remember, if a part of your country is and island or piece of land thousands of miles from your actual land, then it's not your land. It's that simple.

***** Even today there are thousands if not millions of uninhabited islands around the world. Sometimes 2 or more countries argue about a single uninhabited island and who owns it. Just because you fined an uninhabited island does not mean it's free to take. The British empire was the most powerful of it's time and took what ever they wanted/could around the world. They signed treaties and trade agreements with many countries and as the super power they could often make sure it was in their advantage. To make some ruler of a weak nation sign a peace treaty was no problem, specially if the ruler got a good personal deal for himself out of it.
I agree other colonial powers could be much bloodier than the British but that is not a big joy for the conquered. The colonial powers populated many of these places with their own people. The ones you mention, Falklands and Gibraltar, but also places like South Africa, Australia and many more. So when you say people should choose their destiny, it means the British people the empire brought to these places. The empire did not give a way anything freely with a couple of exceptions, as you say. Everything from US to Africa, from north to south was taken by those countries people in wars. Often bloody civil wars started by the colonial power holding the land.
I'm not saying Falkland should be given to Argentina. But the things I write are the point of view from the other side, the conquered ones. Colonialism might be a thing of far past for you or a Spaniard and barely mentioned but at special times it's ever so present for the other side. And Falklands is such a reminisce of colonialism once again showing itself and it's power. It might sound far fetched to you but these people have a very different history and life experience than you or me. It doesn't hurt to better understand the other side.

    • @D97mgtow
      @D97mgtow 9 років тому +9

bezor, The Falklands have historically been empty and occupied at different times by British, French and Argentinean. The population there now are British and wish to remain so. The islands were not stolen or taken by waging war on Argentina. And need I remind you at the time of the war in 1982 Argentina was a military dictatorship and such dictatorships are aggressive and unstable by their very nature. Argentina was wrong to invade those islands. Britain might have a history of colonialism and empire but that is in the past now and what has been done cannot be changed. Those islands are British and so are the people living on them.
Its time to move on now and accept this. Two little islands in the south Atlantic aren't worth continuing such hatred.

    • @Dgannt
      @Dgannt 9 років тому

dafty97MRA Many islands are even today empty. It's not a reason for any country passing by to take them and then populated them by it's own people. In the end Britain took the islands and signed a treaty with the Argentinian ruler, end of 1800, so Argentina would not have any claims on them.
I think the Argentinian people suffered most under these different dictators and of course the military dictator used the islands to shift peoples attention which was very wrong. I know about most of the dictatorships of South America, most of which were US staged and backed.
Colonialism is a thing of the far passed for us but but not for nations and people who lived under colonialism. There are reminiscences of it left here and there that still create problems. I simply say when ever there is a feeling of injustice, one should not easily dismiss it. It will surface again. if not now then in 20 years or 50 years from now and maybe even stronger. Maybe more energy and effort should be used to listen and solve these kind of disagreements than to directly raise arms.

With all the other problems Argentina has (defaulting on international loans, a poor economy, massive amounts of deforestation, a struggling education system), I'm surprised all the fuss about unintentional offensive number plate (which they took off after being made aware of it). I understand that there is a dark history between the British Empire and Argentina, but the actions of those Argentinians who attacked people who had nothing to do with the war is inexcusable. You can't persecute someone because of their nationality or heritage (and you would think events like Apartheid or WW2 would have taught people that). History is not something people are meant to live in, dwell in and in turn make the world darker, but rather learn from, and make it better. The Top Gear crew showed no signs of animosity or hatred towards Argentina, and even tried to rectify the situation, so I believe the response they received was nothing short of barbaric and prejudiced. I have heard stories about Argentina from Argentinian relatives, but this was just a side I had never heard of before. I watched both parts of the special I was amazed at the beauty of Argentina and Chile, but those last parts deeply detracted from the whole thing.

I believe that this subject should be left to rest, but going to the most delicate city, where history is tied with the Falklands War, having a plate that resembles it should have been the job of the producers to make sure to change it. After all, they new from the get go that the feelings in Tierra del Fuego are higher than in many places. It is not an excuse for the behaviour the Argentines depicted, but it could have been avoided with a little bit of respect from the producers as well. I believe it was an childish behaviour from both sides.

I'll copy and paste this to you again. When someone buys a car they don't look at the number plate and think "does this have any special meaning?"... They just buy the fucking car. Don't be such a idiot it wasn't planned in any way, shape or form. It is a very easy thing to miss. It was ONE, yes ONE guy who posted about the number plate on the internet and it spread like wildfire and all of a sudden everyone was offended.

krytonic0 So nice you are kind of following my posts in a rather weird way. Listen man, if you do not like my viewpoint then don't even argue with me, less insult me. I never said they did it on purpose, but they had a responsibility of looking into this things when you go into a country with history. I will give you an example. If you have a car in Chile, and you cross to Bolivia yeah? If your plate number has the word PAC or MAR you have to hope that a thing such as Tierra del Fuego doesn't happen. Look it up.

Hans they REMOVED the plate, they did everything they could to calm the situation, as soon as they were messaged with the info that people "perceived" the plate negatively, they removed it.
Fact is they were targeted by right wing Argentinian thugs, who made it perfectly clear they were not interested in discussion or dialog, they wanted a fight and thats a situation they were going to force.
If the plate said "1L0VARG" ie: i love argentinia, that wouldnt have made a shit of difference to these thugs, they targeted the top gear team specifically because they are British citizens.

I don't believe for a second they didn't know the connection with the plate. Throughout Top Gear the presenters mentioned they remembered the number plates from all their former cars and their parents cars. Clarkson even made comments about plates on cars they bought which had offensive acronyms. I think he wanted the car because it had a deep meaning for him and then read the plate which led him to the idea of driving in Patagonia. They've always used subliminal messaging throughout the show with signs on the cars and other things therefore I don't believe for a minute they didn't know.

You heard Richard say that 928 was the only manual one in the UK, and that mach 1 was a beautiful car, same with the lotus. My opinion about that episode: Argentinians' reaction was exaggerated, but I'm sure that Top Gear offended on purpose, because every special made by TG had this hidden message: "UK is better". And this was no different: they had to build a stadium to create a match between Argentina and Uk. I'm sure it was a vengeance of the 1986 football match where england lost, and in that time the falkland war was a raw nerve between those two nations.
The number plates: it may be a coincidence, but there are photos of other number plates in the porsche, so i.m.o. that means TG knew that it would have created controversy. They saw the car on sale, noticed the number plate and then said "let's go to Argentina".

I know I'm 3 years late I apologize for responding late but the pictures of the car were after the car was shipped to Argentina and after someone pointed it out it was too late to legally register it with another plate so they put a decoy on the car but couldn't use it much as it's illegal to falsify motor vehicle registration/documentation in which that plate was assigned to that car. Plus that car Jeremy has sedimental value to as it he in the special said that that's the car he was test driving when his dad was fatally ill and he respected that model Porsche as he credited him being able to spend his dads last half hour alive and being able to hear his dads last words to that car.

Jeremy Clarkson drove a Porsche 928 in the Top Gear Patagonia Special which had the number plate H982 FKL. Argentinians believed it was a deliberate reference to 1982 Falklands War and took issue with it by ordering the presenters to get out of Argentina immediately.
The production crew had to abandon all the 3 cars the trio drove in the special. They were also pelted with rocks by the angry mobsters who *thought* it was a reference to the war.
Mind you, the number plate of the 928 was already registered before it was used in the special and it was just a matter of pure coincidence.
