    Thank you soooo much! I have been using a one step process with satisfactory results. I tried the two step process for the first time this weekend (using your method/recipe) and I can not believe that I achieved COMPLETE GRAY COVERAGE!!!! I will not ever invest the time for the one step process again when the results were so amazing with the two step process...completely worth the time that I invested! I feel 10 years younger...thanks for your amazing recipe and video!!!

    Love it! You're so pretty! I too use a plastic grocery bag split in the front to cover my hair after henna application. I will be using indigo for the first time this week in the 2-step process to dye my hair black. I have used the PPD combo henna dyes in the past to get black hair without the 2-step process and I am just not feeling using those chemicals, even though it is faster. I buy the rolls stretch wrap from Walmart that is used to wrap stuff for moving...1,000 yards is like $5 and the roller with a handle is easier to maneuver to wrap around my hair versus a roll of kitchen plastic wrap. I put that on first and then add a grocery bag, then an old towel, and sleep! Using aloe vera juice instead of lemon juice also results in a bit less dryness. The coconut milk and lime juice is a great idea.

    My hair is a very dark brown, and I've found that if I use only henna by itself, it will make my hair reddish brown and if I use the henna then indigo, it will make it pitch black. The only catch is that the indigo is not permanent, it can last for a while, but eventually your hair color will become a reddish brown. Hope this answers your question! :)

    You mentioning that your hair is dried out by ACV and lemon juice was such a comfort because I am one of those people who am sensitive also to things like that. I once used baking soda to try to cleanse my scalp and my hair broke off, got super dry, looked terrible. I recently also thought it would be smart to use amla powder to cleans my scalp....same drying effect. I'm still trying to get my hair back to normal with argan oil (100% organic). It is going to take time. Thanks for your vid!

      Thank you!! I’m not using it anymore actually. I loved the color, but my hair is low porosity and as I’ve gotten older, my hair has become naturally drier. Henna has always dried my hair some but with these changes, it’s just way too drying and changes my curl pattern. I’m now on the hunt for other natural ways to cover my grays, no luck yet.

    Hi Gabby,
    I used 100g of the henna (and I alllwaaayss have some left over, so one pack will be more than enough) and 1/2 a pack of Indigo. :)

    I just wanted to say that I've used a stainless steel fork and spoon to mix both my henna (MDH brand), AND my indigo (Misha brand) and no reactions. I mix in a glass bowl, however. I've done it 3x now. LUV your vid! One of the best out there, tx! :)

      Also, I can bleach over henna no prob. It'll lighten to a yellow-blonde in one, one hr session using a 30volume cream developer. I've also bleached over indigo (indigo was used after henna to get black), and I could only get it lifted to a medium blue, only using a 30volume developer for a max 2hrs that time. Maybe if I used a stronger developer, I could lift it lighter. But just wanted to say that yes, you can colour/bleach over pure henna :) ...at least I can, anyway!

      vroomvroompartystata Hey! Your input is appreciated! Much of it depends on the type of henna that you are using. If you check out the directions for most coloring instructions in the warning section, it says don't use if you've previously applied henna to your hair. This is mostly because compound hennas which use metallic salts cause a chemical reaction with ammonia (often found in chemical dyes). The result can cause extreme shedding/damage, so you have to be sure what is in the henna you initially used.
      The other possibility is that nothing happens at all (there are a number of dyeing over henna videos on YT that cover/show this). Usually this is because the henna permanently coats the strand. Bleaching may work differently though because it's stripping the hair. I'm actually not sure, have only researched dye without bleaching, but based on your experience, it sounds like this may def be the case :).
      The only other thing is that African type curly hair is extremely sensitive to chemical treatments that a lot of straighter hair can withstand, so many times it's just safer for curly girls such as myself to be extra cautious. On a personal level, I've had henna in my hair for four or so years now, I've been growing it out for a year, living with grays haha, just so I may eventually color it. I'm just not willing to take the risk. :( I'm happy though that it wasn't a problem for you. As in your case, it can be done, it's just kind of a "enter at your own risk" situation. Thanks again for sharing!

    I plan to leave both in as long as possible and hoping that the color will last longer and I also heard that if you take cold showers the color will also last longer but not sure if its true. About my second question I looked all over youtube but I could not find one person who just did a one step process with indigo so i'm just not going to be cheap this time and get the henna too. also do you know where to buy indigo super cheap?

    One more question if you don't mind. I know you said that you only used water to rinse out the henna, but what about when you rinsed out the indigo? Did you shampoo and condition after you rinsed it all out? Thanks so much for your time. :)

    Very cool! I used to do like 25% indigo with 75% pure henna for auburn, 50/50 for more of a rich brown. I'd mix my henna the day before and let it warm up in the sun, then also mix the indigo beforehand...it was cool because as it develops it releases the color on top and you can see the dark blue liquid...which sounds scary but it counteracts the red of the henna so your hair isn't orange...haven't done the henna in years but I'm thinkin' of getting back into it! Thanks for your video! :-)

    I'm happy that it's useful! Going all natural was definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made. I found the regular dye to be soo drying and my hair took forever to get back to normal. The henna has been so much gentler on my hair. I hope you have the same experience with yours if you decide to try it!

    I apologize for such a late response!! You should be fine as long as it's henna on henna. The one I use is specifically for sensitive hair as I was kinda scared to do it the first time. A patch test might be good too though, if you want to be extra sure. :)

  • @NiftyKeisha
    @NiftyKeisha  11 років тому

    Hey Marie, I would definitely skip the black tea, but you still need something acidic to get the dye in the henna to release, so I would shoot for ACV, water, and/or lemon juice if you want a lighter color. I hear you about not wanting the coconut milk, everyone's hair reacts differently. :) Wouldn't suggest oils that are really thick like shea butter if you want it to take well, but other oils might be cool. I haven't done it this way, so you'll need to test it out to find the best mix.

    If you avoid oils and add some yogurt, eggs 10 mins (protein) before applying, you will get a richer shade than orange for henna. You will not need to keep it for more than 2 hours, that will dry your hair. Do not shampoo, just wash off the henna. Leave the hair 24-48 hours with out shampoo and now apply hot oil like coconut or almond or herbal oils..leave overnight. Wrap with hot towel for more conditioning for 15-20 mins before washing. If you add Fenugreek seed powder it softens. Fenugreek and neem also helps dandruff.

    Hey Perle, hear hear to that! :) A good DC is so great, but the indigo def makes it tricky. I always put conditioner and seal with oils after rinsing it out, but I can't really go in for a DC until after a few days to be sure it won't rinse out the color.

    I don't know if it'll thicken it up, but it will condition it making it stronger, healthier, and shinier. Dye vs. powder: It's pretty much the same thing, it is both a natural dye and usually comes in powder form. I prefer it in powder form (rather than a paste), because I like to prepare it myself as I know what I've put into it. I've actually never heard of anyone using henna to dye their lashes. Although my recipe is chemical-free, the eyes are so sensitive, I personally wouldn't do it.

    • @NiftyKeisha
      @NiftyKeisha  10 років тому

      Hi Mely, just a couple questions: Did you use the Mehandi or another brand, only asking because sometimes different brands have different levels of things? Did you let the indigo sit at all (it should be applied immediately)? Also, was your indigo fresh? Sometimes if the indigo is old, improperly sealed, or frozen, it won't take at all. To make the grays darker, I did some research and here's some suggestions I came across, but please note that I haven't tried these myself: If you want to brown down the red, you can try an indigo gloss (I actually might be trying this very soon for a touch up): 1TBS indigo powder, mix with water to a paste, then mix with 1/2 cup conditioner. Apply evenly to hair, let sit for 20 minutes to one hour and rinse. Or if you do a half henna, half indigo, this should result in a medium browning of the strands. I also read that cranberry juice instead of lemon/ACV can give a deeper shade if used to make the henna. I'm sorry to hear that it didn't take! I hope these help!!

    You don’t need any kind of acid to activate henna. I’ve been using henna and indigo for many years now (pic shows is the 2 step process). If you want to ensure more moisture, use full fat coconut milk as your liquid.

    It's funny that you mention Wen. I had bought a bottle two weeks ago (after hearing a lot about it). When I got home though, I looked at the ingredients and found that it has dimethicone in it...I had to return. I have to be very selective when I choose to use silicones as they can be very damaging for my hair. I recently bought a gel that has it, so I didn't want a cleanser that also has it as it also contributes to build up. Bummer! Thanks for the suggestion tho! :)

    I luv henna. Its awesome! What I do after my henna color --after I wash it out is that I use a moisturizer with a head cap. I was using semi permanent color and it was thinning my hair. I had to wait 8 weeks after my last semi permanent color before I used my henna.

    Yeah, keeping it in for a while takes better, it might come out that blue black, but overtime it will def turn just black. Cold showers make sense, hot water opens the cuticle allowing color to leech out, so keeping it cool should provide longer color retention. I don't think there is a 1 step option for the indigo unfortunately, that would make it soo much easier, wish there was one! haha I only buy mine at Mehandi, 100g for $7.50 (which is 2 applications for mid-back hair), so $3.25 per app :)

Since the color stays for a while I only do this every 6 months, so because of the length of time in between, I have a lot of new growth that hasn't previously been henna'd, so because I have to henna my new growth, I just go ahead and do the whole thing. I haven't tried touching up. Wish I had the answer to this one! :( If you do though, let me know how it goes!

      Dee If you’ve already mixed the indigo, it will need to be thrown away, but you can put the henna in the fridge and save for a later date. Freezing henna can also increase the lawsome release, so it’s great to do. I no longer henna my hair, but I froze and used henna later for years and it works wonderfully.

    Hmmm....you should be able to do the same process. This recipe completely covers my grays, but trying the one they have for grays specifically might just make it last longer. Not all of their powders are completely contaminant-free though, so I would check the ingredients to make sure it doesn't have any dyes/PPD. I haven't used the Twilight for Grays one, but the process for releasing the dye and henna usage shouldn't change, so I think using this recipe will be a safe bet. :)

    Great vid! I'm so trying this, not for the color but for the health benefits it offers to the hair. I'm wondering since I don't need the color do you think the lemon juice and the tea are necessary? Thanks

    • @NiftyKeisha
      @NiftyKeisha  11 років тому

      Thanks! You could definitely skip the tea. I don't know about not using the lemon unfortunately. Although it is used to activate the dyeing agent in henna, I'm not sure if it also helps the conditioning properties to "take" to the hair as well. Since you're not looking for color though, I would say it can't hurt to try it without the lemon first.

    Keisha, your note is very helpful! Thanks so much! I just love the way my hair looks right after I henna and Indigo it and wish I could keep that blue black gloss going longer. It just seems to fade a bit faster than I would like. I have dreadlocks and that may be the issue. I didn't put moisturizer (coconut milk)in my henna mix like you did so I'll try that as well. As for the Indigo gel recipe, that sounds great! I am definitely going to try that. I think you may have answered a question that I had which was can I Indigo my roots without doing a henna first? I really wish I didn't have to do the whole process every time my roots started to show. I have very little gray but the henna/indigo does a good job, just wish there was a short cut. Thanks so much for your help. Bless

    Hi Keisha,
    Thanks so much for your tutorial.
    I have been using Henna & Indigo Mehandi for about a year now and I love it but the deep black Indigo fades really fast, like in a week or so. You said yours lasted for 6 months. How can I make the Indigo last longer? Where can I find the list of suppliers you recommended? Thanks & Bless

    • @NiftyKeisha
      @NiftyKeisha  10 років тому +1

      Hi Yaya! I've listed the direct links for what I used in the description box. Sounds like you already use the same indigo though. I'm not sure why the indigo isn't lasting as long, mine would stay for a very long time, but I have noticed that if I don't wash my hair prior with the conditioner, it also stays longer. It also dries my hair out really badly though. :(

  • @lavenderstarz10

    Hey quick question!
    im ordering my henna from mehandi too and you have a bit more hair than me so i was wondering how many packs of the 100g henna and indigo did you use? Just one of each? or two of each like the website suggested??

  • @NiftyKeisha
    @NiftyKeisha  11 років тому

    :(!! May I ask what kind of henna you're using and what's the releasing agent you like to use in it? I find that the henna is oftem the culprit if the indigo doesn't take. If I don't see a big color change on my grays, then I know I did something wrong with my henna recipe. It sounds like you've already tried many methods, but if you don't already, maybe try clarifying your hair before as well? This will dry it out a bit though. If the henna is coloring, how are you preparing your indigo?

    Thank you so much for the tutorial! I think this is the most detailed hair tutorial for dyeing with henna and indigo. Your hair really looked lovely after the process. I have a few questions:
    1. Sorry if you already mentioned this in the video, but why is there such a high acid content in this recipe? Does the acidity bring out the pigments in some way, or can we reduce the lime juice/vinegar?
    2. Can you use water instead of coconut milk?
    3. I've seen some recipes which put oil into the henna mixture- would you think that would be okay to add?
    4. Is it necessary to add sea salt into the water for the indigo mix? What purpose does it serve?

    Thank you for posting this! I just did my first henna treament. I tried to keep it simple (henna, Orange juice as the acidic agent and water) BUT...it left my hair reallllllllllllllly dry. I wasnt really seeking a color change. I just wanted another method of conditioning and this BACKFIRED. I am new to this...what have I done wrong? I plan on using Jamila next as I think the henna I used was probably not good... :( THANK YOU

    Keisha,
    Thanks so much for getting back to me. So you use the same brand as I do. Hmmm....it looks really black right after I dye it and then it gets dull after a few weeks and not quite as black. I even let it stay in twice as long the last time to see if that would make a difference. I don't put the conditioner in the Henna the way you do and I don't condition before I henna, I just wash with peppermint shampoo before. Anyway, your hair looks awesome and you are lovely. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you & Bless

      Thanks Yaya! Hmmm, I'm really trying to trouble shoot for you. First let me say that the color is going to dull over time, but it should still be very black. In the video, the before color of my hair was what it turns within six months, so it doesn't stay pitch black for six months, I definitely mentioned that it fades over time, so I'm sorry if there's some confusion in relation to that, but lasts me at least four or so months before it starts to look browner. I've also been trying not to henna more than twice a year because it changes the texture of my hair, which I don't like, but if this wasn't an issue, I would probably touch up once every four months. I mentioned this in another comment, but you may want to consider trying an indigo gloss for touch ups (I'm definitely gonna be trying this, but I haven't yet): One recipe I came across is 1TBS indigo powder, mix with water to a paste, mix thoroughly with 1/2 cup conditioner. Apply evenly to hair, let sit for 20-1 hour and rinse. I find that with recipes there's always going to be some trial and error unfortunately as everyone's hair responds differently to things. :(

    Hi there. K my question is if I don't want my hair darker, can I just mix the henna with my favorite oils and/or Shea butter? Not too crazy about adding the coconut milk since my hair doesn't like added protein.

    Oh man! Yeah, the orange juice is so mild, definitely shouldn't have left your hair so dry! I'm glad to have provided some info to help reduce the possibility of it happening again in the future!

    Hi NIftyKeisha!!
    You really know your stuff on henna & Indigo!!
    I always use box dye or go to the salon to cover gray roots with a black hair dye and have decided I want to try all natural henna with indigo.
    I love how you incorporate the black tea into the henna & coconut milk in the Indigo. I have extra thick & rich coconut cream!! Can you use brewed coffee into the henna & tea or in place of the tea?
    Which henna/indigo brand do you suggest purchasing for my first time to cover the gray roots that will take? I would like to order ASAP! Thx:)) I'm really looking forward to trying this & will keep you updated!!
    Tahirah

      Hi Persia, I've definitely read that brewed coffee does great things when covering grays, so you can totally give it a try! I haven't done this myself, but I would think the coffee would do a good job. You can also use cranberry juice instead of lemon from what I've been reading recently as it's supposed to give a better tint and help the color to last longer than the lemon. The brand is Mehandi that I use, all this info and links are in the description box.

    Hi NiftyKeisha-
    Thank you for the wonderful informative video and for sharing. My first time ever to dye my hair. I have had my hair permed before. As far as using any dye - Yes- I have virgin hair - at the age of 50+. So any and all info I can gather before "head"-ing (pun intended :)) into this new adventure - will be most helpful. I'm so excited! God bless you.

    Maybe don't leave the indigo in for as long? I've found that the longer I leave it in, the darker it gets. There's no guarantees though, since all of our hair reacts to these things differently. I've been actually wondering about your second question too. I've been doing the henna and indigo every time, but I feel like the only hair not already henna'd is my new growth, so I shouldn't have to do it all over. I've been doing the whole process though cause I'm paranoid. haha

  • @NiftyKeisha
    @NiftyKeisha  11 років тому +1

    In the past I've just washed (no condition) and my hair was extremely dry and unhappy after, so I prefer to do a mild wash to get rid of build up and then a mild condition in order to protect my hair from the apple cider vinegar. ACV is a strong clarifier that will eat away any residue of the conditioner left on the strands, so the henna still takes. On it's own (& left on for hours), vinegar strips my hair badly, so I use the conditioner (rinsed off) as a buffer. Results have been great.

    Hi! thks for the video, crystal clear! but i have a doubt, I applied Henna yesterday looking for black color but the result obviously is not what I was looking for, so I wanna try again with your technique... how long do you recommend me to wait before I try again?

    • @msj3639
      @msj3639 5 років тому

      Hi Janis. You may and hope you already got an answer by now but if not...I know you did not ask me but I like to help. Henna will not dye your hair black. It will only lighten it in preparation and to make your hair more receptive to the indigo to make it black.

    • @NiftyKeisha
      @NiftyKeisha  11 років тому

      Hi Beatrice! I don't think it changed my hair texture so much where it would be categorized differently (my hair is predominantly 3c), but I did feel like it loosened my curl a little. For this reason though, I try to go long periods between treatments as I prefer my hair in its most natural state. Hope this info is useful!

    Oh and also I have very, very, very thin Asian hair :( do you think this will help thicken it up a bit? I was also wondering if there's a difference between henna "hair dye" or henna powder...is it all the same thing? Not sure if this is safe either, but one of my friends dyes her EYELASHES with indigo and they came out a dark steely blue. Have you ever heard of anyone dying their eyelashes or eyebrow with henna/indigo? is it safe?

    Thank you so much for providing such an informational video about Henna. I have Henna'd my hair before for conditioning purposes but have been trying to figure out a way of conditioning my hair without dying it. Although I love the orangey color of henna, I prefer mine black to flatter my complexion. Do you think Hennigo will be lighter compared to all over Indigo after Henna?

    • @NiftyKeisha
      @NiftyKeisha  11 років тому

      Hi Epiphanie, I've never used Hennigo before (never heard of it actually), so I don't have a reference point to make a proper comparison unfortunately. I do think that if you're shooting for really black, it's best to just go with the pure indigo over the henna. If you don't worry about it drying out your hair too much, you can also skip the coconut milk and lime mix (my results have been even darker without it).

    I really love your video and I think I will be trying this very soon! I just have a few questions...
    One: Do you know if doing this is safe for hair that has been previously died? I died my hair more than a year ago and although its much more faint it's still a concern.
    Two: Can you still do protein treatments on your hair would it be safe?
    Three: How long before you can Co-wash your hair again the ACV and Lime concern me and my hair thrives from moisture, will the Henna and indigo wash out?
    Thank you!

    • @NiftyKeisha
      @NiftyKeisha  11 років тому

      Hi Shannon! These are really good questions: 1. Henna is totally safe to use on previously dyed hair, even more so if it's been such a long time since your last treatment. 2. I use lots of products with protein and do deep protein conditioning with no problems, so this should be okay as well. 3. I actually co-wash after I've finished rinsing out the indigo. I'm just realizing that I left that out! :( Basically, once everything is thoroughly rinsed out, I treat my hair the way I would normally (conditioning and sealing) as long as there's no shampoos/sulfates.

    • @NiftyKeisha
      @NiftyKeisha  11 років тому +2

      You're very welcome! :) I think that's a good idea. Henna can change the texture of your hair a bit as well as dry it out (because of all the acidity), so I would definitely sample it on a small area first to be sure, especially because once you go with henna, you can no longer use regular dye.

  • @NiftyKeisha
    @NiftyKeisha  10 років тому
