  • While delivering Sigmund to Heindl Engineering for a bit of work, I rode a 2019 Ural for the first time. Also, my Son saw a used Janus Halcyon 250 and fell in love.
    At the time I'm posting THIS video, I'm about to leave to head back to Heindl to pick up my 2017 Retro and my Son has made up his mind on the Janus Halcyon, will it come home with us? Or will he leave it?

    Spending time rewatching your videos. I have ordered a 2021 or it may be a 2022 to replace Urie, my 2006 Tourist. Glad to here your impressions on the “new” Urals. I hope I can feel a HUGE upgrade, and I do so enjoy my 06 (bought new in 05). Thanks for your efforts!

      I rode a 2008 Tourist, I rode my 2017 Retro Gen1 EFI and now it has Gen2 EFI. I would say in order of performance (least to best) it would be the 2008, 2017 Gen1 EFI, 2019, 2017 Gen2 EFI. The improvement from the 2008 to the 2019 is huge, like two different machines completely. The improvement from 2017 Gen1 to 2019 is mostly about how smooth the engine runs and even power. Going from 2019 to the 2017 Gen2 EFI is nominal improvement in performance, almost a tie really, and does not address any other engine upgrades or improvements on the 2019. The 2021 or 2022 will be a massive up kick from a 2006, hold on tight!

    Fantastic, honest and critical review. I had a 2009 for 5 years and really liked it but didn't like syncing the carbs or it maxing out at 60MPH. I had the OD green gear up. I only used the 2WD twice. I'm toying with the idea of a Ural sometime in the future and I'm interested in the CT. I have heard that the CT is a bit faster due to the lack of the sidecar driveshaft drag. I would ove to see some more displacement and another gear or two.

      Do your research, talk to owners, join the soviet steeds forums and groups and beware the haters. Are they the best machines on the planet, no. Are they for the "ride and forget" crowd, no. Are they a ton of fun and a unique ride you can enjoy, yes! "Understand what you are buying" is the best advice I can give.

      While not cheap, they are not incredibly expensive either all things considered. I never dreamed when I bought my 2008 back in 2015 that by 2019 my wife and I would both be riding and have over 25,000 miles EACH in experience. They are addictive.

    I have to say you always have a great way of describing what you see, feel and hear. The higher angled fuel injection for more foot room and supposedly cooler running engine due to deeper fins is a big plus. I have the 2018 gear up and happy with it but I agree with you to wait for a possibly even better 2020. Thanks for your honest review. I’m sure John at Heindl engineering would have wanted you to tell everyone to rush out and buy the 2019.

      I think any time is a great time to get a Ural and start riding. The 2019 has it's place and will undoubtedly become a marker point in the history of Ural just like 2014 when the first EFI's were rolled out. It's another step in the adventure. I'm sure Jon will be happy selling whatever people want to buy and servicing it. Honestly, I'm looking and wondering what 2022 or there about is going to bring. I'm pulling for that 5 speed transmission!

      Urals have no where near the problems of old. If you get a 2019+ you're likely to have a good time with it. The DEALER makes the difference though, buy from a crap dealer, you'll have a crap motorcycle because they do the finally assembly. Go to SovietSteeds.com to research dealers. Come on in, the water is fine.

    I bought a 2018 at about $5500 cheaper out the door, so no matter what they improved, it’s not gonna be worth that money. I also got a 3.yr warranty, so I’m happy, never thought I’d enjoy such a slow bike. But I’m having a blast, everything I’ve every watched about Ural, everything that got me to actually purchase one of those turds has been on pre 2019 bikes, so keep that in mind

    I saw a Janus at show and it sure looked like the same Chinese 250 single that Cleveland Motorworks is putting on their bikes, which are quite a bit cheaper. Cleveland also offers a factory hardtail, the Heist, I think it's called. But for even less money, and pretty much the same fuel economy, if your son loves retro looks, he should look for a 2010 or later Royal Enfield Classic 500. These have closed loop EFI, and are responsive without an extensive warmup. My opinion of RE's engine is that although it's no Honda, it's much more reliable and durable than those chinese 250s.

      But only the EFI, if you add the heads etc. might be steeper price, but our '18s have the newer pistons so only difference is slightly larger fins and a smaller exhaust port, I'm not sure if that will be as noticeable of an upgrade

      No, I would not. Or I wouldn't have purchased my new M70 Retro last August knowing the 2019's were on the way. I knew they were discontinued and really wanted one, was disappointed then I learned they would not have the 2019 engine available in them. The engine I have I think will do well enough once the bugs are working out of the rest of the rig. Not everyone will agree with me, but I've wanted a Retro since about 1 month after I got my 2008 Tourist (my first rig) in 2015.

      @@GoneUraling How does the handling of the Retro compare to the tourist?

    • @GoneUraling
      @GoneUraling  5 років тому +2

      If you have a good running 2015, I personally don't see much in the way of a difference to go to a 2018. Most of the changes can be had by upgrading. There were some engine improvements in the 2017 and 18 but I think the 2019 is evidence those changes didn't bring the improvements needed or desired to Ural. I personally would ride the 2015 and enjoy it. Now, dropping the Retro and going to a 2019 cT, performance wise, yes, big improvement and not even a cause for hesitation if going from a cT to a cT. But... that Retro is just sweet and handles so well. That would be a tough choice for me but in the end, I think I would hold on to the 2015 Retro and save cash for whats next!

    • @GoneUraling
      @GoneUraling  5 років тому +2

      The Retro (to me) glides over the road better, is not as harsh, sits lower to the road, absorbs bumps better and is much easier to steer. Great for highway. The Tourist (and the cT) has a much stiffer feel, is harsher on the road and has heavier steering. I prefer the M70/Retro. My wife, while she would like the easier steering, does not like sitting lower to the road or the softer feel of connection to the road. It all boils down to preference, but I like the ride of the M70 much better than the cT or Tourist I had.

    I had a 2017 for two months and it was a complete POS
    These bikes “LOOK” cool, but there is NOTHING cool about how much of a piece of crap this bike really is.
    Lost about $4,000 dollars when I sold it to the next sucker.
    BUYER BEWARE!!!

      It happens to some, and when looked at closely it is often a dealer problem, not always a bike problem. For the best experience, go to a good dealer. If not setup properly in the first place, then followed up with inexperienced repair efforts, you will not have a good time. There is also, for some reason, an occasional real lemon in the bunch, I won't deny it. I will say where we are right now with these two 2017's at about 14,000 miles each, both are doing well.

      Would really be nice if there was set other company that made a bike with sidecar, instead of grafting a separate side are with an unrelated bike.

      Comments like this make me wary of anyone flaunting that they’re Veterans or Patriots, damn Lou Dog being a good ol boy scamming his fellow man while having an American flag in his comment, makes me sick

    Lots of useless anti-pollution controls to atone for all the idiots driving cars what stupidity needless complication complexity on serviceability just to atone for the pollution that cars make and as a low-volume manufacturer they could get an exception if they wanted and that would save two grand off the price of the bike because as the prices of B got higher now they are rich man's toy

      Sometimes its better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than speak and remove all doubt.
