The ZT 0308 is by far my favorite knife that I own. What amazes me is how well it slices, being such a beefy blade, I was not expecting that.
Bought a tan one for $230 (Amazon sale) as a birthday present for myself earlier this spring. Sexy knife. Very beefy, good looking, cuts like a dream and the action is just perfect. Been carrying it to work quite a bit. I'd never want to use a a flipper action, exposed frame lock knife in a "tactical" role though. As you mentioned, you need to grab them "right" or suddenly the flipper doesn't work. I like my manual Adamas too but recently found THE perfect "tactical" folder for me - the SOG SEAL XR. Man, I really love that thing! It was only $95 on sale from SOG's own site too! Never expect to love a SOG folder this much.
Cold Steel Recon 1 will do me just fine! Nice knife though.... Not for the price however but to each their own.
Man, I had a tanto version of the CS Recon 1 when they first came out almost 20yrs ago. Barely stabbed it in some relatively soft wood to do something else real quick, grabbed it with slight twist and a rivet snapped. I was in the Marines at the time and never got a CS folder again. Just happy it happened in civilian world and not in the field or deployed at that moment.
I own the recon 1 and this 0308. I love both.
I’ve also had my recon 1 reground to Hollow grind and it’s phenomenal

I had An Adamas Folder The large size one.
It Broke Under hard Use, the stop pin snapped, making the Blade fold backwards (lock kept it from smashing my hand).
I also had a ZT 301 Tiger stripes OD Green.
Same if not Worse abuse on the ZT 301 for years and it never Broke on me.
I have the tan version of this knife and damn is it a great knife. It fits my hands perfectly and I've been using it in construction for months now and it just keeps going!
I love my ZT 0308 thus far. I’ve had it since Saturday, 8/20. I stropped it and it’s the sharpest blade I own. I like the action is like butter. I like carrying it daily thus far and I don’t see me carrying anything else for awhile.

I love Benchmade, but almost all the Axis locks I owned had vertical blade play, including the Mini Adamas (I sold all of them). None of the ZTs I own (0350, 0308, 0640, 0450) have any blade play and none of them have lock issues (yes, I spine whack tested all of them, although I know it’s stupid). The materials are also better for the money. Nevertheless, I sympathize more with BM due to their excellent customer service. KAI won’t even send me a replacement pocket clip to Germany!
For me the 4Max Scout or AD10 or SR1 are the best outdoor folders. Not counting customs but production knives.
Smokes but no cigar. The only knife in ZT folder line that is worthy of the title 'heavy duty' is the ZT 0550. Had it for a decade, couldn't remember how many times i used it as a pry bar. Takes a hell of a lot more beating than most of my fixed blades and i still use it today as my EDC folder
I don't think ZT will ever make a folder as bomb proof as the 0550
I got the Tiger Stripe ZT 308, partly because Gibbs (CSI) has the shorter Tiger Stripe ZT 350. This is my fav ZT. I carry this bad boy when I go out. Its too heavy for my surf/board shorts tho…..
Nice knife but I usually use larger knives for hard use. For the price I’d stick with my cold steels.

I’ve been flirting with a Cold Steel, but the Taiwanese construction and previous quality control issues were off putting. They are also really cheap in cost which I worry about. Are they still good knives?
Benchmades are good, but ZT makes better knives in my opinion.
I've been considering buying one of these for a while. I've been wanting to try something in Bohler M390 or CPM 20 CV steel. The only more expensive knives I've owned so far are Spyderco's in CPM S30V or LC200N steel.
I have both of these in my collection. All out hard use, the Benchmade wins. More built for EDC my ZT wins. I really can't agree more with the opinions in the video, especially about wearing gloves. My ZT is custom anodized by Blades We Love, and both my ZT 0308 and my Benchmade Adamas have custom serrations from Tom Veff. Both can be seen on his site. Maybe it's just me but does it seem like linerlock and framelock knives are getting better made and a bit stronger than they used to be?
This is my favorite ZT.
1. I’ve batoned wood with it (yes I know it’s a frame lock) no problem.
2. I’ve done spine whack tests with it against the duct tape roll. There’s a YT vid where a bunch of ZTs fail this test but this 0308 passed. I believe it’s because the steel portion that meets the blade in the lock is ground with the correct angles and grit.
3. The ball bearings do rust if you use it for food every now and then. There’s ceramic bearings you can replace them with.
4. The 20CV doesn’t strop with green compound. I had to upgrade to diamond compound.
5. It’s very thin behind the edge considering how thick the spine it is so it’s a great slicer.
Hey Guys. And hello Gideon, (I read your description, love it btw) I’m currently trying to replace my EDC after 15-20 yrs (lol) I know but I (still) have a Kershaw Ken O. 1475. (Bought it when it came out! Lol but I took good care of it) Using a Gerber Tanto (they no longer make anything like) for the brutal stuff. Im a well trained outdoorsman (not military but Eagle/Order OA.) I’ve been brushing up on what I’d like to replace it with and this video was PERFECT 👍 for me, thank you! I’ve been trying work out which one of these two to pick up as another EDC. I just bought a ZT 0350TSST. (Yes lol, I found a serrated in tiger stripe) so that’s on the way, but as i have a little more time on my hands now, I’d like to put together ( just say a 4 knife collection.). Kinda like a small wardrobe…1 “casual” knife-(the 0350), 1 tough “work” beast, (the Benchmade or recon 1.) 1 “sport” knife, (the ZT 308) I think and 1 “Formal” knife, (something classy I can keep on me with a suit) unfortunately that has proven pretty elusive so far…. I was thinking a “crooked river mini” or maybe Spyderco Para 2/3. Maybe just a Victorinox? Im Still deciding…. Anyway I just wanted to thank you because I find your videos far more appealing than some much more generic boring spec only ones. You really bring like an “Everyman daily life” aspect I appreciate. 👍 They’ve been great for this. Then hopefully I’ll say hi in another 20 lol 😂 no but, just sayin Thank you 🙏. Great review. I definitely agree with you that the ZT’s Frame lock can be a problem if you’re not holding it just right. That’s why I will only use a ZT flipper since it’s easier to deploy the blade. If it’s a thumb stud I usually always find myself pushing on the frame lock and not being able to open it.

Honestly I can’t justify spending that much money on any knife especially considering what’s available. Recon 1 is hard to beat for the money when it comes to hard use folders .
I've thought the same thing, but I took a gamble and bought some high end knife and they were worth it besides one lol
Love the looks of this ZT! But for me, I would be hard pressed to replace my Adamas cruwear with any other folder. I had an original adamas in D2 but the cruwear is far and away better.
I had the tiger stripe one and sold it for $80 to my cousin. My buddy paid like $340 for it out the door and a local knife shop and sold it to me for $125. Neither one of us really like the knife. Believe it or not I always wanted it until I actually got to hold it at the knife shop. The only reason I bought it off my buddy because it was such a good deal. I just did not like the knife for some reason and the way it felt in my hand. It doesn't feel like it's worth over $300. That's just my opinion. Great video. I've never seen one like this with a regular satin blade with the black handle. Mine had the tiger stripe blade
A lot of knives don’t feel like they should cost what they do. Strider is a great example. I couldn’t believe how average the fit and finish of my SnG was. Comparing the feel and action compared to Hinderer, Medford, or CRK is a massive different for that price range. The best Strider I’ve felt is the .75ar, which was made by Medford so that explains it. I still like my SnG but it just isn’t a $495 knife and doesn’t have a premium feel, regardless of it’s hard use or not. Medford blows Strider out of the park, too bad so many soy bois get offended by Greg Medford’s belief’s and opinions because they are sheltered from the real world and can’t recognize truths.
I can’t see myself using a $300+ knife to baton, use hard, or go camping with. I’d always worry about losing or breaking it. For that money I could buy a Cold Steel Airlite for a pocket carry and a Mora or ESEE fixed blade for camping. Unfortunately, I guess I’ll just have to live vicariously through those who can afford it. Good video, as always!
For me is Kershaw links either the 20cv or 420hc will be good enough for me and are good american made knives at good prices....not as robust as the zt or Adams but will do the job just fine

The Spyderco Para 3 in my opinion is the best EDC knife out there. However, I’ve been really getting into carrying bigger knives even if they don’t preform quite as well. I don’t know why, maybe it just makes me feel like more of a man. So I’ve been really interested in ZT as of late. This one looks real nice. But I genuinely don’t like ‘super steels’ and that’s what saves me the money. I use my knives at work a lot. I dull knives relatively quickly. For example, I have an M390, and it usually needs a tuneup about every 3 weeks. Takes me about 30 minutes if no edge damage. If I do manage to chip or roll the edge (which does happen), that’s even more time. This annoys me. I much prefer the VG-10, BD1N type steels. The edge easily lasts me the week, and I can just slap it on a strop and have it back to extremely sharp in less than 5 minutes. Edge damage is easy to fix, too. I like to be able to succumb to my urge to throw my pocket knife into things, and not have to worry about having to fix the edge when I inevitably miss.
To come to the conclusion of my unwarranted rant, I wish ZT would use “lower end” steels because I think they fit better with their more robust builds. But maybe it’s good they don’t, because then I would buy them.
For the price and the hard use, they should just switch to magnacut over the edge retention of 20cv.

The ZT0308 all day everyday. I just wish it was a 4" blade.
I got mine used for $250 and it was the American made blade exclusive with their Sasquatch logo laser engraved on the titanium lockside and a textured carbonfiber scale. I then upgraded it to multirow taco bearings, made a small cutout in the blade for middle finger flicking, sharpened it @19° perside to a mirror polish and bought a black milled titanium pocket clip for it so now it's even better that the original and worth a bit more.

G'day Aaron, like the beef, not keen on that slot right next to the moving parts though; doesn't make any sense, especially for a HD working folder. There is the ol' question too; at what point does a large folder give way to a small fixy. Ultimately each to their own, but I would argue a decent fixy around the same size as this one deployed, offers more grunt, less potential for failure and can be had for a fraction of the price. And with the change, get a Recon 1, ........ : ) Cheers Duke.
Not that I would use a 400 dollar nicely designed smooth ball bearing folder for bushcraft type stuff but before I buy it I do want to know if it COULD.
Because if I am caught out with nothing but my EDC for some odd reason, I need it to be a dependable tool. Who knows, your car flips and your seatbelt is stuck, your window doesnt open and there's a treebranch in my shoulder that I dont want to pull out because of bleeding. My knife needs to help me if this happens.

The price range is a key factor , that i don't own any ZT knife. But i wish i had the budget to buy one. Amazing products with a top finish and quality . Every time i see on a cataloge one , i m going to press the button, but after i see below the price ....i close the laptop. And also ZT must change the product names. Get some names , and not numbers. We are not mathematicians.
WTH! WTF! I just heard today (from Chuck Nunface's Channel) that ZT has DISCONTINUED THE 0803 - entire platform!! I'm a huge fan of ZT and other American Made knives, and I've been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for ZT to release a FULL TITANIUM version of the 0308. I personally dislike knives with 1/2 & 1/2 Titanium & G10/Micarta - I don't understand why people would like this & don't want it. This is especially true for the FREAKIN' UGLY, NERDY 0308 in 1/2 "COYOTE TAN" (vomit-colored) G10! [It does make slightly more sense for Rick Hinderer knives to lower (and spread out) the cost, and you can buy the upgraded titanium scale of your choice later - but ZT has no such scales available!]. The ZT 0308 is a BIG, BEEFY, OVER-BUILT FOLDER, which is what ZT is famous for - WHY THE HELL ARE THEY DISCONTINUING IT!!! UGH!! I have the ZT 0562Ti Hinderer Slicer (with dual titanium scales), and it is one of my favorite folders! (Another favorite of mine is the LionSteel SR-11 in full titanium.) The 0308 would have been SO COOL in FULL TITANIUM with that chevron milling pattern and big, beautiful blade. I'm sure that knife would have sold MANY, MANY units - especially if they changed the blade to CPM MagnaCut - but even in 20CV it still would have been super cool. I feel like ZT is like, "Well, we don't want to be toooooo successful and make toooooo much money . . . let's NOT give our loyal customers what they really want . . . let's give them another slim, skinny, slender, diminutive folder." YEAH - that's exactly what the knife market needs with freakin' Benchmade releasing another variant of the Bugout every week and Civivi going crazy with hundreds of variations of tiny knives!!! I AM SO PISSED OFF ABOUT THIS!
I got taco bearings for my 0308 you can find them online they’re all ceramic bearings you should check them out
I have pretty big nostalgia for ZT, but have been pretty let down by what they have put out the last several years. Another great competitive option is the Spyderco PM2 Cruwear (CruCarta), and for under $200 it's a pretty good deal for the big Cruwear blade with the micarta scales (so glad Spyderco made it a standard model).
Spyderco needs to make a Cruwear Shaman a regular model... oh, wait, what am I thinking? - they don't even try to meet the demand for the plain Jane 30CV model. Yeah, the fact that ZT's first limited edition model in several years is a copper scale version of that tiny, goofy little 0022 really says it all... they even boast that it's the smallest folder they produce. So what??? That's like boasting about dropping the smelliest turd.
I have a zt 0909 it ls fairly large I've enjoyed it over the years she was only like 200 hen. Maybe a lil more or less. Prices have sure changed.
Why not the older zt300?
Logically and practically the ZT makes sense...but something in the primitive part of my brain has always sensed something off aesthetically with ZT’s never allowing me to reach their price point. Always to many things I would change...and yes that cut out design feature I’m seeing on some of their new models throws me off.
There's just two minor things I think all ZT's should have: washers instead of ball bearings and ceramic detent ball instead of steel one (which wears out to quickly).
I have both Adamas and zt 0308 blkts and feel really happy

ZT has really fallen off since the days of the 0452 cf. High prices, small knives, just not worth it. Gotta ask. Have gas prices been hurting you guys being on the road? It has to be rough.
$6 diesel is a kick in the guts, it was $3 when we started last year. Thankfully we’ve been blessed And haven’t felt it too much, and we try not to venture as often from the campground as maybe we used to or roll multiple trips in the one.

The 308 is sooo cool! I remember when it came out and I was geeked to see ZT going back to their roots. Two reasons I don’t own it are #1 the bearings aren’t for me, too much fine sawdust in my life and bearings get too gunned up. And #2 I don’t get along with frame locks. I just cannot seem to train myself to avoid it when trying to flip the knife open. I do have plans to get the Adamas though. Just have to wait a few weeks because I spent too much on pistols recently.

Learn how to use a knife & it’s not a problem. When in the world do people bang on the spine of the blade in real world use? These Cold Steel mall ninja’s bought into the Cold Steel lock testing videos. Why would anyone hang weights with their knife or slam a metal bar into the back end of their blade while it’s in a vice? It’s ridiculous.

I own and use many ZT folders, never had a lock failure issue and have not heard about this issue from other users. Maybe expand on your comments with some examples.

Why have knife manufacturers started using 2 different handle materials on the same knife. 1 side titanium. Other carbon fiber. G 10. Etc. I don't think I like it.
Original Adamas, built like a tank. Freaking thing keeps on going after years of use.

The 308 was an expensive knife. The cost just went down recently (end of April 2023 up here in Canada) by $40.00 CAD. Making the hit not so bad.
I also just found out the 308 can be had with CF scale (of course the show side only)....haven't been able to find any one selling this version...only the Cyote Tan scale ariant and the black G10 with blk/grey tiger stripe.
Two companies have begun making scales for the 308 ...LWT? And anther...I'm sure Flytanium is working on a Micarta and Ti....no word on that yet.
Adamas vs 308....Adamas has been proven in torture tests. and is over $150.00 CAD less....But I do love ZT's...so.....guess I'll be buying both...heh...I'm not into "slicers" --need to "slice"? Buy a box cutter/utlity knife...perfect blade gemoetry! ...dirt cheap...drop ? NO biggy...

Oh very familiar. I did a whole video on the situation back then.
I've seen a lot of people comment on it. Some say they haven't bought benchmade since and some say they only destroyed seized firearms from criminals. I haven't looked into it enough honestly.

I don’t understand peoples problems with assisted opening, speedsafe, or whatever you want to call it. Owned lots of kershaw and ZTs with it and loved them all with no problems.
Well, they take more effort to fold and the spring mechanisms add complexity/points of failure. I used to be all gaga for auto and assisted knives but as I got more into collecting and wielding blades, I far prefer some smooth one handed manual action.
Haven’t been a fan of Zt designs for years. Seems like they abandoned their original fan base. Not with the money IMO.
Current ZT knives have pretty good lock ups, there were some bad issues a few years back. IF anyone ahs an issue, ZT warranty is great, send it in. That being said, my AD10 is maybe my favorite big knife.
Funny how covid made a lot of people I know carry bigger knives. People stay at home now and dont need to carry light.

I was shopping for an old school heavy ZT until I watched a yt vid where the owner had a bunch of ZTs but was complaining at the discovery that tapping hard on the spine of the blades for majority of his ZTs defeats the lock open of the blade. I stopped shopping for ZTs.
Eh... ZT kinda fell of the face of the Earth for me. Nothing really game changing from them lately. Sad, because they used to set a great standard back then. The 0308 is a cool knife, but I'll stick with my Seal XR.

I have the ZT 308. I went through the process of learning to hold it just right in order for it to deploy.
Got me so mad, I almost sold it. The pocket clip is absolute garbage just like on my other ZT knife.
It's not even close to as good as my other ZT knife ZT 0804CF in CTS-204P steel.
In the hard use application, there's NO way it would beat my Recon 1.

It’s real not mall ninja. Why would you ever slam the spine of the blade on anything or hang weights with your knife? The lock works just fine if you use the knife properly.

ZT has dissapointed us purests of the big ZTs. Plus, KAI has blurred the lines between Kershaw and ZT. The 0562ti and 0808 are still my favorites. 👍👍🫡🇺🇸🐍
