I found a PL12D at Goodwill for $10 over 20 years ago. I just had to replace the belt and install a cartridge and stylus and it plays beautifully. Still using it.
I'm a crude carpenter but I have fun. However, it is so interesting and rewarding to see an excellent finish carpenter do beautiful and accurate work. I even learned several things. Thanks.
This was a real pleasure to watch, seeing a piece of audio history getting a new lease of life. The PL 12D was one of the goto budget turntables of it's era (although I had a Sansui SR222). Your obvious skill is complemented by your fantastic workshop! Y
Dire Straits of course ! I can remember back when no one was remembering the existence of Dire Straits. Now , people are discovering again the genius of Mark Knopfler and the rest of the band ! I love it !
@@jonvincentmusic In the case of this implementation, it can be safely made using not so expensive machines. Bosch, Makita or similar power tools will suffice. But of course I am lucky to have a fully equipped workshop for my profession.
WOW!! EXCELLENT video! and well edited video. The shop looks very organized as well. 👍 I appreciate a carpenter/woodworker who also LOVES record players! (Yes I said record player, not turntable.)
I'm inspired by this video and will be creating a whole wooden plinth for my sony 1978 turntable. I hope I can do it as well as your beautiful work. All the best and szczęśliwego Nowego Roku.
Superb job, Marcin. My father was (still is...) a carpenter so I appreciate this kind of timber works very much. Thanks for sharing it. Greetings from Spain!
That's really cool have own one of them I believe thay came out in 1974 and it was one of the cheapest but best sounding turn tables of its day mine still works great
The PL-12D was the budget wonder of the 1970's. When you only had $100 for a record player but you lusted after something more than a BSR changer, it was next to impossible to beat the PL-12D, it performed so far above it's price point...and they were everywhere. Pacific Stereo had them stacked up by the doors. Back than, if you bought a receiver and speakers, they would give you the PL-12D (minus the cartridge of course). I had one with an Empire 2000e/III and it was a great machine for what it was.
Useful background story behind the PL-12D. I've restored my PL-12D recently and got a classic receiver Pioneer SX-424. It's all hooked up to my Tannoy Mercury M2. Seems to be working well soundwise. The sound that comes out of the whole set up is warm, nice and deep.
Very nice work! I have just bought a PL12D and decided I would do the same thing; then came here and find this! Beautiful technique. One question; how did you manage to imprint the "Pioneer" logo into the front piece of the wood? Subscribed . . .
Thank you very much. The "PIONEER" logo was made for me by an engraving company. They used the technique of laser engraving. They can do it shallow or deeper. Depends on the desired effect.
It was my first turntable, tank you a little tear in my eyes watching it. P.s. my actual turntable is a perfect well kept (my wife one's) pioneer PL 570-X with black plint, your will make a better effect too!
Wzmacniacz i przedwzmacniacz gramofonowy lampowy wykonała zaprzyjaźniona firma Sisound. Projektuję i wykonuję minimalistyczne fronty do ich wyrobów. Nad kolumnami głośnikowymi jeszcze pracuję, to tzw. linia transmisyjna z szerokopasmowym głośnikiem marki Sonido. Tak, całość dostrojona dla mnie brzmi wspaniale. I przyznam, nie wiedziałem że płyta winylowa może tak dobrze grać.
No cóż ja mam powiedzieć, jak zwykle wyszło bardzo mile dla oka. Lubię Twoje projekty, mają swój styl i charakter.
thank you. I did not have the opportunity to make another housing. I only made for Pioneer because I had to refresh and match it with the rest of my hi-fi set.
I have a PL10 in primo condition just sitting in a closet somewhere. Put a new belt and greased the spindle on it about 10 years ago. Original headshell, even. Only missing a cover. Rega P6 is a little bit better performer, though, so the Pioneer stuff is all relegated to being relics. It was great in its day.
Unfortunately, I only made two exams. I have already sold one for myself. Contrary to appearances, it is time-consuming and unprofitable to make for such a cheap turntable.
Absolutely amazing work. I am now a subscriber to your channel. I would like to know how you got the pioneer logo engraved into the front wooden panel ? Thank you so much. I will be watching your channel avidly.
Thank you very much, I had several putanas with the Pioneer logo. I commissioned an engraving company to do it, they did it with a laser. I took the board for engraving before assembling the case.
Marcin, this is very beautiful. How is the Ortofon Red Cartridge, styulus and headshell on this table? Is the removal of the suspension table difficult? I am considering work on 2 Pioneers PL's. One is fully manual PL-12D with an excellent tonearm. The other is a PL-10 with the lifting lever but otherwise manual. The PL-10 tonearm is rougher. I was considering a swap of the tonearms but I am a little daunted.
Hi, I used the Ortofon bronze cartridge. A friend replaced the cartridge, wiring and made the calibration. Removal from the housing is simple, just remove the plate. From underneath, loosen the two screws and shift the two locks. The whole can then be lifted upwards out of the housing.
Przykro mi, nie wykonuję takich plint. Zrobił na własne potrzeby. Wbrew pozorom wykonanie jest czasochłonne, drogie. Nie opłacalne do tej klasy gramofonów. Zrobiłem z pasji i chęci dopasowania.

Nice work, but what about resonances and acoustic conductivity? Neither the most expensive turn tables were made of wood. Composite materials were used as an exception.
