My uncle was a 1st north western driver for 10 years, yes they do all know each other. He drove Holyhead - Chester/Crewe. At the end of the shifts they ride back in groups haha. Even the guards and ticket officers get involved. Like one big family. My other uncle was a steam coal man before WW2. During WW2 he learned to drive tanks and HGV's so much so he automatically got his HGV licence and Drove trucks the rest of his life. Ill never forget he reversed his truck with tanker into my aunties urban street, so tight it was unreal.
I'm from Reading- it's awesome to see the RDG-oxford route in the colours of engines when I was young enough to be kayaking on the river next to tilehurst station and visiting friends who live close to Pangbourne. then there are the memories of visiting Didcot as a child for the steam railway they had/have there. Thanks for the flashbacks :)
That marshalling area near oxford is usually quite empty, but it usually has a rail/ballast replacement vehicle sat there at least and occasionally a freight train.
The guy in the back is kind-of accurate, as that's usually where the conductor lives when he's not collecting tickets or working the doors, at least that's how it was on Northern Rail trains I used from Colne...
The BR Class 166 is powered by a 350 hp Diesel engine coupled to a hydraulic transmission, powering 2 axles on each car via a drive shaft and final drives. The transmission device would switch from hydraulic mode into mechanic mode at around 50 mph, linking the engine, drive shaft, final drive and axles mechanically, hence the drop in engine RPM while accelerating.
Great to see you playin' in TS2016. The reason a lot of switches in the cab of this train don't work, is most likely because this train (and route) is one of the default trains that came with Kuju Rail Simulator from back around 2008. I heard that the TS group won't be attending any gaming events due to lack of funding. That's just what I heard, I'm not trying to start rumors. Anyway, great video as always, Paul! PS: The Class 166 is the Renault of the train world. ;-)
Another great video Squirrel, you are one of a select few who inspired me to start up my own channel. Thank you for providing us with great content on a regular basis. You are a champion!
Actually Paul, you can say it with Euro Truck. I remember when you were driving around near London somewhere and SCS added a water-tower that you recognized into the map.
On the physics of the class 166: I've been on these trains a lot irl (they operate into Paddington and Marylebone, my two local commuter lines) They actually accelerate faster in real life than in the game - the simulation gives weirdly non linear acceleration as if the engine takes ages to throttle up, which it shouldn't (between Twyford and Maidenhead stations the real trains get right up to the rev limiter, 90mph). However the braking seems pretty realistic - actual GWR drivers tend to be pretty cautious when slowing for stations. I've found in order to stop well you need to be doing 25-30 mph on full service braking to stop in the middle of the platform. I'd recommend looking for steam workshop scenarios for this route as some of them are MUCH better than the stock ones (search "no sleep till London", that one's excellent but long).
I managed to find a way to get to Tilehurst 3 about 10 seconds before due time using trail and error judgement and a lot of luck regarding timing. Soon as the game starts at Reading instantly reverse the train at the station before anything else for about 20-30 odd yards backwards then break quickly at 84%. Soon as it stops quickly allow the passengers on. Push direction forward but don't move until you hear the doors shut. At the same time judge the Class 47 train ahead causing the red light, especially the last waggon when clear changing track. Open the 166 up whilst the lights are still red and hope you get around 8 to 10mph leaving Reading passing the light just as it changes. Have tried everything even putting the Sander on but haven't found a method after arriving at the first two stations of keeping time after that.
I know people who worked anf drove these units in the late br era The chiltern units are far better accelerating the 165/0s only 75mph due to the gradients on the route. The 166s and other 165s are very slow at accelerating in real life but their brakes are very good. Very poorly modelled in train simulator. However braking and acceleration are very accurate. Lots of them have had incidents over the years but they are some of the most reliable diesel units on the British rail network to this day. Big fan of your videos thanks for uploading.
You should try to find a Norwegian scenario. We might not have a track along the western coast. We might not have a line further from Oslo than Bodø. But what we do have, are the great 72 and 73! They slide quickly along the southern line with all the speed the terrible terrain will allow them - but dang it, we never give up! We can accelerate like mad and break so hard gran will spill her coffee. Ungå en 166 - Ta 73 toget But seriously, my local (Stavanger) train time table is incredibly lenient. I often take the train back and forth to kill an hour. I did it today, - just after the morning rush. The train was going at maybe 75% speed or less and it was on schedule. The is apparently some scenarios - though, I con`t have the game so I can`t test it. Wish it was good, because the type 73 (ICE) and 72 (Local) are fast and agile (120-160 kph with top speed of 210 around Oslo-Gardemoen.)
You barly ever stop at Appleford, Culham and Radley on all those stoppers, What they d in real life is the drivers get the revs up with the brakes on and then they get nippy acceleration! :)
+Harbinger of sorrow it was like that before ts2016 before dovetail owned it, then when they bought the franchise it was a paid upgrade which was little difference to the old one
Huh? Dovetail has owned train sim since forever. They were Rail Sim or something like that and rebranded last year or in late 2014 to Dovetail Games, but it's still the same company and the 2015 and 2016 major game updates were still free. New scenarios and locos etc. though were always extra.
Those updates are only funded by the extras (Cabin DLC and Griffin DLC and alike) that they bring out ;) .. But I am not going to complain, I love ETS :)
Lucia Drake I just think the way SCS do it is more noble. For instance, all new trucks are free updates and the game comes with sufficient content before buying any dlc.
To anyone reading this: There is a route called Cajon Pass (for those of who don't know) it cost 40 dollars on launch and now you can get it for 9 dollars, I am not joking this true. There is no sale going on so it is going remain for 9 dollars. This might not last, I'm not sure. But you can quickly get it for only 9 dollars.
Hahaha... Career mode is totally brutal squirrel. To be honest, the 3rd party dlc is usually better quality than the dovetail stuff.... re-edit, u just totally said it. Glad you did.
I seem to remember a long while back, there was an unofficial patch for the 166 released, as the acc and brakes are not right. I remember this scenario as well and I believe the timings are unachievable. Enjoying hearing your opinions on DTG, you sum them up very well. IMO, they're, lazy, slack in their offerings & are uninterested in the end user and other companies, DLC show them up, time and time again.
I think I failed this route 3 or 4 times (with a lot of time between (rage quit)) before I finally redid it in the same day just so I could remember how the engine worked.
SQUIRREL !!! LISTEN UP !!! With the 166, you don't accelerate from zero by slamming the throttle home. Start at 25%, and let it run to 20-mph, then notch it up to 75% and let it run to 50-mph. THEN go to 100%. Your acceleration curve will be much sharper. Leave the throttle around 75% and you'll maintain top speed. 3/4 of a mile from the next station, disengage the throttle, but DON'T touch the brakes. You should be at around 40-mph at the end of the platform. Then you apply the brakes, and it should stop before the far end, but not much before. The 166 is a turbine drive and does not react like a direct drive internal comb. engine. I've been playing the original version of this game for 8-years, and my methods work quite well for me. Interesting that they still have those "general aviation in Europe" billboards. Same people in same clothes.
Well, the accelleration tip didn't make much difference (if any), but your ideas about braking don't work at all, at least not in TS2017. I hardly scrubbed off any speed by coasting, and by the time I realised I needed to make an emergency stop I just sailed through the station. A bloody difficult scenario.
I have been wondering about the DLC aspect as well. Theoretically they could re-implement their scripting system for the old scenarios and just run them in the engine. The main difference seems to be the switch in the game engine, their scenario editor / world editor is something they will probably have to write from scratch. So technically it should be possible to carry the scenarios forward into the new version. Now if they WILL be doing this remains to be seen, but if not, I can tell you I will be pretty pissed as I do have a lot of their scenarios, but I have also stopped buying more until they can actually clarify what will happen. Way back two years ago when they first talked about "rebuilding it from scratch" they did hint that you may not be forced to automatically upgrade to the 2017 version as it has been thus far. Now if they said this so that people could "continue to play the old routes and scenarios" or if it was because people were concerned about HW requirements, who knows. But Dovetail really runs a risk to alienating a whole lot of people. Oh, and a few months ago they did had a video on the XBOX detailling that Trainsim would be coming to the XBOX as well in the fall, which makes me think that we will see the new version this year.
1:03 - 1:12 lol XD 3:13 - 3:20 lol and also that guy looking into empty space with his hands behind his head, that guy looks so chill it's hilarious XD 9:40 you nailed the brakes so much that it confused the game lol gg 19:21 lol :/ 20:22 - 20:36 just imagine Dovetail were getting on in that platform and you just left them behind, they probably deserve it and it just wasn't worth your time. Simple as that. 21:23 👍 31:20 lol -96 pts and your reaction to that XD 34:22 - 34:38 lol 37:29 XD lol that's a bit weird 37:40 - 37:55 'next gen' XD 40:58 - 41:12 XD 43:40 XD 45:22 - 45:57 ouch! XD oh well
You can usually onlty buy the latest version. And speaking personally Horseshoe Curve and Marias Pass are two of the best routes to get. Forest Rail AMD the Xmas ones are fun to do as well.
Your videos are some of the most relaxing on UA-cam, perfect with a cup of tea. Thank you for making amazing content, Squirrel!
AND A HOB NOB
To be fair, I'd watch cannibals eating babies, if there were Hob Nobs available.
I so agree 100%
Yes exactly... No music, no constant cutting, just a 1 take (mostly) video and it's so relaxing and great, and very fun and interesting to watch!
Chocolate ones though right?

Great to have the variety back Paul! Hope you're enjoying your break!
do you simulate delays from strikes?
looooooool
You simulate Southern Rail by not running the mission at all.
+Lukeno52 Or the French /s
Ivan Alfaro
Nah, to simulate the French, you have to deliberately drive in the wrong direction.
Yes yes

Love the fact that he overshot the station, tried to get away with it by reversing but got penalised anyway.
thanks for the trucking videos squirrel they've helped me with my truck simulator games
I live very close to Oxford and Didcot and they both looked very authentic and realistic

A refreshing reminder that even guys as good as you screw things up! GG!
Very entertaining vid as always. I recently bought this route and am glad it is not just me struggling with the timetable!

Loved that Knebworth
Farming Sim 17 looks absolutly amazing
If only all game developers followed the example led by SCS who update their game over time, instead of forcing paid upgrades.
+Harbinger of sorrow it was like that before ts2016 before dovetail owned it, then when they bought the franchise it was a paid upgrade which was little difference to the old one

Gotta love the Intro there Mr Squirrel :)
What the song name
nice to see train sim back on the channel keep it up! good for as usual
This is a passenger announcement please make your way to the back of the train as we are going to miss the station
Lol
"All passengers, please hold onto your testicles and pray for the brakes to be strong enough in the next half mile."
I like that one
The reason there are so many flaws with this DMU and Route are due to the fact this was included in the original 2009 Release of Railworks.
That intro does things to my body.
Squirrel plz plz plz do a flight in a airbus a320 from Edmonton(yeg) to Vancouver (yvr) thanks
I love the new intro
I haven't watched any of your videos in like 2 months
31:02 LOL! I live in the U.S but I have heard about that power station I believe the cooling towers are still there.
Great video glad to see more train sim on the channel keep up the good vids paul
It's funny I started watching you and hated train sim, now it's probably my favorite UA-cam series you do
To anyone reading this: There is a route called Cajon Pass (for those of who don't know) it cost 40 dollars on launch and now you can get it for 9 dollars, I am not joking this true. brilliant introduction man
I just gotta say I LOVE the new intro!!!
What’s the name
The hell with that huge gap between the train and the platform
Great video!! Some very valid and interesting points made about train simulator.
the actual score here was -142 crazy deduction of points!
Very well done mr. Squirrel
holy crap that intro is awesome!
Wil the video the 10 nicest routes to drive in ets2 ever come?
I've actually been on a platform when a commuter train I was waiting on missed the platform.
Still loving the new intro
lol. Another good video from Mr. Squirrel him self.
new intro is very awesome
It is my daily commute route LOL, from Radley to Oxford, only a 6 minutes journey.
It usual gets to Radley at about 0842 instead of 0831
Hahaha... Career mode is totally brutal squirrel. To be honest, the 3rd party dlc is usually better quality than the dovetail stuff.... re-edit, u just totally said it. Glad you did.
Nice new introduction clip

Your the best keep up the simulators
They might have had tea, you never know.
Enjoying the return to Train Sim very much!
didcot power station is still there, they only removed one of the boilers and it's cooling towers.
I love these videos, Squirrel is the best!!!
I love the new intro
i love your new intro Squirrel
the new remix of squirrel’s intro
33:24 look at the other platform #lol
Love the new intro
I think I failed this route 3 or 4 times (with a lot of time between (rage quit)) before I finally redid it in the same day just so I could remember how the engine worked.
At the minuet April 2018. Didcot power station still exists but they are blowing it up soon
Love the intro
Hey Squirrel nice video and keep up the good work
Awesome intro Squirrel
Would you ever consider doing the Victoria to Brighton route! Would be good to see as I use that service quite often!
your my favorite sim youtuber
Has anybody seen/heard about the herne bay plane crash?
Thankfully the pilot survived.
FINALLY A TRAIN SUMULATION
I've always found getting gold in this scenario impossible without moving off before the doors have shut
I did the same scenario at the same time as you, and I finished with a score of 742.
How do you know when he recorded it ?
+arupian666 I think he means he started when the video itself started
Ohhhhh, yeah, that makes more sense...
me to
Its always commutertrains that is late and stuff. Its never the trams, the busses, the metro, the boats. Its always commutertrains.
I love your train sim videos
Finally, some more Train Sim - its been far too long :D
you're the best gamer
Some trains IRL have drivers at the front and back though.
-30% is idle and under is breaking and -10%and over is axelaration
please do a video on omsi 2 london when it's released on the the 22nd September on steam, maybe even stream it on the friday
I'll miss the stream so an impressions video would be great
+Ben Hampton it would

LOVE NEW INTRO :P
Accelerated on 10% braking and decelerated under 79% throttle
New INTRO = BAD ASS
YAY MORE TS2016!!!'im really happy now :P
3:14 Pensive man!
I live in Oxford, Radley is in between Oxford and Abingdon
Squirrel- at Games Con are you allowed to film in there, will you be making any videos of your visit?
have you done the St Pancras to Diversify route?
But what about the dlc from let's say just trains do you think that's going to be ported over ?
Doubt it - unless Just Trains do it themselves.
I have been wondering about the DLC aspect as well. Theoretically they could re-implement their scripting system for the old scenarios and just run them in the engine. theres a new train sim comeing out
1:03 - 1:12 lol XD
3:13 - 3:20 lol and also that guy looking into empty space with his hands behind his head, that guy looks so chill it's hilarious XD
9:40 you nailed the brakes so much that it confused the game lol gg
19:21 lol :/
20:22 - 20:36 just imagine Dovetail were getting on in that platform and you just left them behind, they probably deserve it and it just wasn't worth your time. Simple as that.
21:23 👍
31:20 lol -96 pts and your reaction to that XD
34:22 - 34:38 lol
37:29 XD lol that's a bit weird
37:40 - 37:55 'next gen' XD
40:58 - 41:12 XD
43:40 XD
45:22 - 45:57 ouch! XD oh well
What are the "must" dlc's for this game? And which edition of the base game should I get first?
You can usually onlty buy the latest version. And speaking personally Horseshoe Curve and Marias Pass are two of the best routes to get. Forest Rail AMD the Xmas ones are fun to do as well.
Is this a new intro? It looks awesome!
