How To Fix A Car Shift Linkage Cheap and Easy

  • If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, there's a good chance the collet has broken and fallen out. Most car companies don't sell the collet separately. They only sell the whole cable, which is expensive. In this video I show you how to fix a car shift linkage cheap and easy, building your own collet out of a shock absorber bushing and some washers. If the shift linkage on your car is loose or broken, watch this video and then go look at your car and see if you can fix your shift linkage the way I fixed mine. If it works, it costs less than $10 and will last a long, long time.

    My mechanic was in the hospital when mine broke off. I told him I was going to take it to Express so they can fix it since he was in the hospital. He told me I better not dare go pay all those $100's+ of dollars when all he can do is put some zip ties on it for free. Well the next day after getting out the hospital... He came in zip tied it all up. Now it works fine.

    Great video, I am having this problem with my brother's 1999 Cougar V6.
    I have made a temporary repair with a lump of plastic as the bush, and a modified split-pin, but now I've seen this video, I will use this method.
    Interestingly, I found the two bolts that secure the ball-joint block under the gearstick were loose too......this was also the case on my own 1998 Cougar, so this may be worth checking as well.
    Thank you for a very helpful video!

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  7 років тому +1

      +Neil Williams Maybe, if it has come completely disconnected down below, and the shifter moves freely but the car stays in park. If it’s stuck in park and you can’t get it out of park, and it is an automatic, then it is probably a problem with the switch on the brake pedal. A lot of cars have a switch on the brake pedal that stops you from taking it out of park unless you have your foot on the brake.

    • @neilwilliams8608
      @neilwilliams8608 7 років тому

      If the brake lights work, does that mean the brake switch is good? 2002 Nissan Maxima 3.5
      With the key to on position and my foot to the brake pedal, it does not work.
      This car was in a flood. The water was above the brake pedal.
      Could the flood have messed up the brake switch?

After idling for 5-10 mins it loosen but I was wondering if it may need greased or if there is any potential hack we could use to stop this from happening? How do you know if its the linkage or the transmission going out. My truck wont go in reverse? But sounds like to wants to.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 років тому +3

      +Monica Labarre If you have someone move the linkage while you are under the truck, you should be able to see what's moving, and look for looseness in the linkage. If it can shift through all the other gears without problems, it may be a problem in the transmission.

    • @saucerguy3
      @saucerguy3 3 роки тому

      The reverse gear in the transmission is separate from the rest, it's common to have them go out independently. It is on the easier side for repair from a shop to fix that specializes in them though and does not require tearing down and rebuilding the whole transmission.

    Mine was exactly like this and I got my nephew to print me a spacer which seems to be doing the job. My question is, do the cables ever need lubricating?

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  5 років тому

      I don’t know. They tried to sell me a whole unit with cables built-in, so maybe when this fails, you’re supposed to replace the whole cable. I bet it will be fine though.

    • @Michael467012
      @Michael467012 5 років тому

      @@hoohoohoblin I figured they looked pretty much sealed up to be lubricated for life. I bought a focus second hand not long ago and I noticed that the shifter is a lot stiffer than in my old car. Big difference though is that my old car used rods, not cables, and it was a little more worn out. Doing similar to the video did seem to give the shifting more feel though.

    • @hoohoohoblin

      +garylee bybee if it is an automatic transmission, there's probably a lockout on the brake pedal. They are set up with a switch on the brake pedal that stops you from being allowed to shift into gear unless someone has the foot on the brake.

    • @hoohoohoblin

      You should be able to move it manually if you can see where the plastic thingy attaches. Check with an auto parts store and see if they have a new plasitc part you can put on. If not, you may be able to do what I did and modify something.

    exactly what the garage said - 'gotta change the whole cable' - 300 euros with labour - will take 48 hours to get the piece- that was 8 days ago - now they're gonna make a temporary fixing. ooooh they're really thinking outside the box now- is your auto a manual or automatic? - mine is a manual stick shift

    Hey Guys I have a 2015 Mazda 3 the issue the when I put it in D is sometimes slips into neutral but most times it works fine. The transmission works perfect, I was wonder if it could be the Transmission Control Module (TCM) It don't appear to be mechanically but can't say for certain.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  Місяць тому

      Based on the number of views, this gets, it must be a pretty common problem. If you’re able to shift into other gears, it’s possible that something is broken inside the gearbox. But you should definitely look and make sure that the linkage is tight.

    • @jamestodd5018

      Artemio Espinosa on the older vehicles there was a cable that ran from the accelerator linkage down to the transmission. On newer vehicles it’s controlled electronically and the kickdown cable has been done away with. We would need the transmission model and year of the vehicle in order to look up which one you have.
