  • A D-Day veteran wept on the Normandy beach where he landed 80 years ago, after local people shook his hand and thanked him.
Four veterans, Donald Jones, John Life, Jack Mortimer and Peter Newton, aged between 99 and 100, walked on Sword Beach alongside serving military personnel, after arriving in France with the Royal British Legion (RBL) on Tuesday.
All of them stormed the beach after landing on June 6 1944.
Local people approached and thanked them. Mr Jones, 99, of Mold, North Wales, became visibly moved.
He sat alone in his wheelchair with tears in his eyes and looked out to sea.

Myself and some good friends visited Normandy two weeks ago to pay tribute to the incredibly brave men that gave so much on that day and the following campaign to rid Europe of the nazis.
I just wish i could have thanked one of these gentlemen and let them know how much i appreciate their sacrifice.
I am proud to say that they are my heroes.

These veterans who returned to Sword Beach must have rekindled the horror of that day and the friends and comrades who fell that day. Can anyone imagine what it must have been like. My father served on mine sweepers in WWII. We must remember these brave men and women always. True heroes🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️

The bravest of the brave! Young men storming a beach, men falling among them and yet they continued bc they believed in their country, they believed in the good in humanity and they never gave up! And today? Cowards stealing, stabbing, murdering, raping without a thought for who they kill, maim or hurt! And now there are invading groups who do not honor these men but tear down the monuments and statues, burn the flags of their country and ridicule their traditions! These MEN fought for the rest of us and kept us safe!

I thank all the men who gave their lives, that we may live in a free world. I also had family in both wars but they never talked of the evil things that happened, only the lighter moments. Probably far too painful to go back to the bad times. My heartfelt thanks to all who risked their lives.

The first house liberated on Juno beach known as "Canada House." has current owners that were the family from 1944 All Canadian veterans have been welcomed in the house. And asked to sign the book One of the messages is "Sorry i threw a grenade in your cellar"
Grandfather remembers the house He and his unit came to Normandie/Juno much later And pushed onwards to Holland His picture of the beach was very very sad The gathering of bodies Canadian And German alike - "The stench And death was horrid. it seemed to be laid out in front of us most of the way thru France. This was the land of our fathers before me I took no joy in staying here But was heart filled to know People can now walk the streets And try to put back what they have lost"

According to news reports, two D-Day veterans (one Canadian and one American) were supposed to be involved in today's ceremonies, but died of old age this week. I think the American actually got to France before passing away. The Canadian died a few hours before his flight was to depart. Both were centenarians.

My grandfather was a German general who notably oversaw the Atlantic Wall. I was in Normandy in June 2015, 2019 and 2024 as well as in Bastogne (Belgium) in December 2019 for the celebrations of these battles. I am always moved to see the veterans of the allied countries. I think this war could have ended sooner if intelligent German officers had shown more courage.

The initial wave from the landing crafts was almost like 'going over the top' in the First World War. After all that slaughter and carnage on the first day, it still fell short of General Eisenhower's expectations for casualties. After all this, there were still 11 months of fighting and dying, before it was all over in Europe. There is a great deal of talk of 'the special generation' and they were without a doubt. But, this current generation of young men, and I say young men because, on the whole, it is they who do the dying and the women who do the grieving, would, I am absolutely sure acquit themselves as well as their grandfather and great-grandfathers. We are made of stern stuff. I hope that scenario never takes place, and mankind for once in its whole history can live and take an alternative route. Nonetheless, we still have to be vigilant.
