I've personally witnessed this. I was visiting a friend in Nanjing in early 2008. We were in a Taxi and saw a woman on a bike get clipped by a motor scooter. Her head hit the ground HARD. The guy on the scooter yelled at her motionless body (even though it was his fault) and sped off. Nobody else even broke stride. I thought she was dead. My buddy made the Taxi stop and we checked her out. Fortunately she was only knocked out for 20 seconds or so, but I was shocked how everybody just acted as though nothing happened. A VERY selfish and cruel society.

Can't blame the society when it's the government that put laws into place and ruled against good Samaritans. Turns out if you get punished for just trying to help, people are going to be less inclined to help when you have an overbearing CCP government watching you.

I doubt the guy on the scooter could afford that woman's hospital bills, if she had any. It may seem cruel, but when everyone is struggling to survive, and helping someone could take away what little money you have, most people are going to mind their own business.

This very effect happened to my mother just in the past year in Shanghai. She was riding a moped in the correct lane, a car came past and suddenly pulled into a driveway pushing her off her moped and sending her flying 5 metres further along. Not a single bystander stepped in to help her, mind you this was on one of the busiest streets of the city. This behaviour is atrocious, she was laying there with a broken shoulder and ribs. The driver didn’t even apologise, he merely just said “I am late to a meeting” and proceeded to drive off leaving her on the side of the road. What makes me furious about this is that he kept disputing the crash even when the police went through the surveillance footage and it was black and white his fault. Hats off to the police though, because when the driver refused to come in to the police station for questioning they confiscated his car. We are now taking this to court and we are very confident of us winning the case.

I couldn't even put my gloves down because the wind would pick it up and fling it 500 meters within 3 seconds. I had some trouble getting the flat tire off because the wheelbearings were frozen and stuck, so I was down there freezing my fingers off for about an hour and 15 minutes when it shouldn't even take half of that. Anyways... I would guess about 30 + different people came up to me asking if I needed help. So nice to know if I had needed help it would have been there. Same with other times I've gotten stuck in the snow or fallen in public and needed help.

I’m a social studies teacher, and I was teaching mostly English language abroad. I brought up the ‘diffusion of responsibility’ and the Kitty Genovese case to talk about the the need to help and the need to get involved and I tried to teach: “don’t be a bystander.” The local teacher (they always put in a local teacher who had a different agenda than me) directly undercut my lesson to tell the kids the opposite of what I’d just said (she used direct, authoritative, Chinese). Despite the language barrier, the kids often understood me quite well because of miming, drawing, and plus the kids who spoke good English due to their private ‘after-school-school’ lessons-those kids-those kids would often translate and help out their peers. But yah: I straight-up taught: “don’t be a bystander,” and then their local teacher straight-up taught: “don’t ever get involved.”

Chinese here, can confirm this is true. This is the kind of instinct that got suppressed long ago by the cultural revolution and the Great Leap Forward in the 20th century. When people are all fearing for their own life they tends not to care about others - which is exactly what use to happen: grandparents got dragged away by the red guards, beaten in public grounds and my parents couldn’t do shit, everyone just stood and watched and yelled “long live CCP and Mao” or something like that. You are taught to not intervene or else you get arrested too. Plus people are already too tired and desperate trying to make their own living to care about others.

Just read the amazing book ‘Wild Swans’ by Jung Chan who wrote an amazing true life story of this period and the impact not only on her family but on society at large. Population left totally traumatised by being brainwashed into turning on each other. Truely horrible. Unfortunately, once it finally came to an end, little was done to try and rehabilitate the society so badly impacted, as new leadership just wanted to move on (and not admit terrible mistakes had been made). Little wonder the people were left in a state where only personal self interest mattered, and sadly, that appears to have rippled down to later generations.

It is a factor and it mostly happens in big cities where people legitimately do not care about anyone but themselves. Case and point a woman was "assaulted" in Philadelphia on a rail line and no one lifted a finger to help her in 2021. However, in main land China this is far more than that. It's a systemic issue ontop of the bystander effect. When you're punished for intervening it doesn't encourage samaritanism
The reason is simple. When the CCP's goons come after you they don't want a populace that will spring into action to protect their community members. Like when gang members attacked the protesters outside the bank in the Henan province. Divided people are easier to rule.

To my surprise, although there was a lot of people around her, on either sides of the road, no one seemed to care a bit.
Some people even seemed to notice what was happening, without doing anything besides looking at her with an intermittent worried look on their faces.
I, of course, jumped over the bench and ran to get her out the road, but a car passed on front of me. Luckily, the car was on the opposite lane than the girl, but even when I tried to stop it, the car driver did not let me pass in front of the car, and I had to wait until it had passed to run to the girl and pick her up.

I experienced both sides of this phenomenon whilst I was in China and can assert that Serpentza makes a very accurate point. On one occasion, I had a fairly serious fall from a double pavement into the street. I hurt my shoulder, hip and back and must have been clearly in pain. No one attempted to offer any sort of help but simply carried on as if I did not exist. After about two minutes, I managed to drag myself to my feet and I noticed an old lady staring at me with an absolutely cold indifference, no feeling whatsoever behind her blank stare.
On a second occasion, I witnessed a woman with two children aboard her electric bike get stuck on a zebra crossing (such crossings are routinely ignored by motorists in China). Cars were bearing down from the lights a couple of hundred metres distant. I did what most people would do and rushed out to help push the woman and her children clear. My Chinese girlfriend of the time looked at me disapprovingly and asked what did I think I was doing. So strange; I wasn't looking for plaudits but criticising such an action seemed a bit much.
I could relate several other incidents but they all tell of the same, very depressing phenomenon. Chinese society under the CPC is hugely depressing in this way.

The guy on the scooter yelled at her motionless body (even though it was his fault) and sped off. Nobody else even broke stride. I thought she was dead. My buddy (who was there learning Chinese) made the Taxi stop and we checked her out. The driver was confused why we wanted to stop when we weren't yet to our destination so we had to yell at him. Fortunately she was only knocked out for 20 seconds or so. When she came to, it took her a while to realize we were there to help rather than to abduct or rob her. But he was the only one who helped her and it made international news for a brief time. I was curious so I researched a bit and found out a bit about that element of Chinese society.
But I suppose my biggest recent concerns for the ordinary Chinese people is how many died of starvation during the strict lockdowns, particularly in Shanghai. I just wonder that for every person that escaped their own homes to sneak out and get food, how many didn’t. The elderly or anyone without the ability to climb things that were forgotten by the CCP. With the callous attitude of the Chinese people I wonder if neighbours bothered to help them.

I’ve been aware of this issue for awhile now. That old man who jumped into the water to save a drowning woman was some sort of British official or diplomat. Because he was British, he ended up on the news and in the headlines for a short while. It was both nice because our diplomat was a hero who risked his life given his age but also horrific that the Chinese are quite content to watch someone drown without trying to help.
The bystander effect is very real around the world unfortunately and I’ve seen two instances of this personally. The first was when I was 17 walking to college one morning and I came across a young woman in a pink business suit with heels and a matching handbag just passed out on the pavement with a lot of pedestrians either avoiding her or stepped over her. So I stepped forward and began with the very basic first aid and called an ambulance. I knew she was alive because she was breathing and I could feel a pulse but she didn’t respond to any stimuli even when the paramedics came. I still sometimes wonder what happened to her.
The second time was when I was in my twenties and a motorcycle came off worse when it smashed into a car and the rider flew off his motorcycle and had a very hard landing on the road surface. Thanks to his helmet and leathers certain injuries were avoided. But he still broke his arm and pelvis along with a couple internal injuries. And yet I was the first person to approach and park behind and put the hazard lights on to warn other drivers and jump out with my first aid kit in hand. (By then I’d learned proper first aid and I still keep a first aid kit in my car to this day.)
It seems that often, once one person reacts and “takes responsibility” it galvanises other people to help. In short order we had me and two others assisting the rider, two more tending to the driver of the car and his passengers while yet others had organised the means for approaching drivers to turn around then going to the junctions to block the road and divert traffic. For a group of total random strangers we worked together well until the police and other emergency services arrived and took over.
I think it might have been a point of pride for other people as well as me when we noticed that the police were just taking up our positions along with a few signs that we didn’t have, rather than making their own plan.

There was a dirty young man passed out on the footpath among diners in a street cafe.
I rang the local government and had to shame them with bad publicity in the press before the staff would lift a finger to help this guy.
He could have had a stroke, a fit, heat stress whatever, but the fact is nobody was helping him.
I had to protect myself, I tried rousing him but didn't want to moved him.
The local government receptionist told ME to organise an ambulance for him.
I had to point out that it was her job not mine to ensure their public spaces were safe to use.
I'm not letting the CCP off the hook, but they simply have to engage people to come to the rescue (rangers?) of these lost people in Cities.
This doesn't relate to the more horrific instances in Winston 's video, but it would go some way to reducing the violence and suffering.

Yup. I think its the perception of control. Cos the party, although not socialist, sorts of promises to care for the ppl. Difficult to explain, as I am a brit living in China. UK has, or did have, cradle to grave social system. China promised it, but never delivered. So the party seems to have made itself out to be the guardian, as in, trust us and nothing bad will happen. So when something bad does happen, the ppl stand and watch, and say, how can this happen, cos the party protects us. If an old dude is knocked over on a zebra.. sweep it up, it never happened. Cos the party does not let it happen. Same with the heatwave just now.. its americas fault. To me, everyone is told trust the guv and nowt bad will happen. When it does go wrong, as it does all over the world, the party says nope. It never happened. If it did.. its the wests fault. 👍

    • @TheScotsalan
      @TheScotsalan Рік тому

So yup, since the 1930, the party has been offering a socialist utopia. Nobody needs have to worry about anything. The party will look after you. But while europe has pretty much delivered on that ( I am a socialist), no system being perfect of course, China has not.. its always.. hang on a bit longer, we are almost there.. just need more time.. pedestrians ran over on crossings need to be hidden. Cos there is no free ambulance, no free doctors, like in europe. In europe, treat first, deal with the incident. It wont bankrupt you if a car knocks you over. But thats not the case here. Its not automatic free care. If a car knocks you down, and the driver is a party official ( they are arsehole drivers), prosecute those who help. Cos the party member cant be blamed. Sweep it under the carpet. And the party is massive here. They have recently started putting notices on doors.. party members live here. And hey, it was even worse before XI banned guv red number plates on cars. Back then, maybe 12 years ago, guv plated cars never had to obey any rules. Now the red plates are gone, the drivers still have the same protection, but nobody knows who they are. Tip.. avoid white BMW SUVs. 😂😂. Sorry for the ramble. 👍
