This will forever go down as the one of the greatest bits of talk show history where the actual host not a correspondent tracks down a fan and sees her in person where she works and lives and it is probably one of the most popular memories of Dave’s show. Thanks for sharing this awesome clip.
I believe this to be the all-time greatest Letterman bit. It is perfect in every way. (Especially Colleen’s giggle!)

This clip has always been such a pure delight. Everything about it is just wonderful. Her brother is perfect, him letting Dave inside her messy sister's room is just wholesomely hilarious, and the reaction she has at work is just so cute and endearing. Her laugh is the best. What comedic gold. Absolute perfection!

This was my favorite segment when I was watching Letterman every weeknight when I was a teen in highschool in the late '80's. I'm 50 now. yeeeash... 12:30am-1:30am. Then 12:35am-1:35am for some reason. And since I'm up, I'll watch Bob Costas too. Ooog. Up 'til 2 a.m. every weeknight. I did most of my sleeping in school.

I haven't seen this since it probably first aired, but the moment I saw Colleen's adorable face in the thumbnail I remembered her laugh even before I watched the video. Dave was the best when it came to doing these out of studio bits.

My family got a kick out of this segment when it first aired. I was about to begin my freshman year of college in August 1986 - same age as Colleen.

small chance, but there was a show where someone in the front row was checking their watch and dave roasted them. Would love to see that again if possible. Its later late show era I believe.

Talk about someone getting their mind blown. I wonder how long it took Colleen not to laugh every time she thought of that happening to her. She was the perfect person for that bit. She probably didn't even mind that they messed up her bed to spice up the gag.

I’d say the last piece would be a presentation on how this came together. Merrill Markoe may no longer have been credited as the remote segment producer at this point. This is also pure speculation, but it is conceivable before investing the time and money assurances had to be given that someone would be at home & have allowed access in the first place.
There is definitely something too perfect about that bit. Maybe she wrote a lot of letters like the one Dave responded to and they checked her out ahead of time. Maybe they contacted her brother and him arriving after them was written in. But yeah. If there was ever a making of the bit segment I would like to see, this would be it.
