It's that time of year again.. 😥 It's a shame, but it's part of the life in PA. Let me show you the method I've used for years to store my cars in the winter time. If you have any questions feel free to ask! How does this compare to your method?
I suggest putting the stabilizer in at the gas station when putting the fuel in, then drive the car home which will let the stab get into fuel system. great video
Thanks! I usually wait till I get home and then run the car for 10 minutes or so to get it into the fuel system. Either way seems like it would work out nicely.
There is a school of thought that you should winter your C7 with 1/4 tank of gas, not completely full. This applies to C5, 6, 7, 8. The arm on fuel. sending unit could seize due non movement below a certain gas level. Stay Bill can’t hurt, but running a good fuel system cleaner through before you store the car is important. I did have a problem with the fuel sending unit sticking on my C7. I was able to free it up with a few rounds of cleaner. You don’t want Chevy charging you an arm and leg removing the tank to access the sending/pump unit.
Instead of using mothballs ( stink ) use bounce laundry sheets ( just the basic ) place under and around ( also inside ) works wonders and mice hate the scent ( your car smells great in the spring! )
Great video I'm jealous of the guy in Phoenix I'm in Michigan it's 20 degrees here now I just put my car away two weeks ago . you had a lot of great ideas in your video the only thing I would watch out for is a microfiber I found the mice love them I stuff steel wool in my tail pipes and they won't go near it
I have used steel wool for this in the past myself but honestly either one will do. They are stuffed in there pretty tight so it would take one hell of a mouse to get them out lol. I agree with the 20 degree talk, it's crazy cold here right now, too.
I like to do all that, plus start it up and drive it back and up the driveway (if there’s no salt on the asphalt) to exercise everything and get the tires and fluids moving, including running the A/C unit and especially blast the heat to dry out the interior and move some coolant. I’ll bring it up to temp and give it a few good revvs too😉 and then shut’er down about 2-3 times a week. IMO...The worst thing someone could do is just let a car just sit in a cold/damp/wet climate. I’m born and raised in Michigan, and that has served all my vehicles well for over 20 years. I’ll set some mouse traps around the perimeter and check em periodically. No moth balls tho😬 this isn’t Grandmas house, lol
@@LBJMedia I've seen the salt around here destroy cars in the past I'd rather not find out the hard way it will do the same to the Vette. Also, it's been in the twenties here the last few days and the stock Michelin tires will crack if driven on under 40.
@@americassportscar I agree with the full tank thing, but I've heard that starting it up and letting it run isn't good for it during the winter. It never gets hot enough to burn the moisture out of the oil. It really only gets hot enough to do that when driving it.
great common sense video,,,I add the fuel stablizer at the gas station before fueling the tank,,,mixes with the fuel better and the drive home gets the stablizer into the fuel lines and the injectors,,,
The new recommendation is 1/4 tank of gas because of corrosion on the sending unit. Sulfur will adhere to the sending unit possibly. Thousands of dollars to repair because of all the labor involved. Sulfur may adhere because with a car that is not driven there is no sloshing action of the gas going around the sending unit to keep if sulfur free while driving it. Thanks so much for the detailing video on winter storage, I leave in Bucks County Pa and its time to go thru my first winter. Question where did you buy those mats? Total cost? Also is a cover a must? Cleaning and shining my vette is my therapy, I figure if I leave it without cover I can still do that :).
You're quite welcome! I got the mats at harbor freight, somewhere around 35 dollars for all of them. The cover is not necessary if you're ok with accumulating a lot of dust over the winter time. 👍👍 Me and another UA-camr are having a meetup on the 20th of October in the Carlisle area if you're interested in a little car show/get together.
All good tips Justin. As to plugging up the exhaust tips and even for interior use, you can use clothes dryer sheets. Mice don't like them, plus if used in the interior, not a bad aroma. I know the C7 technology is a lot more advanced than the C6, but with the C6 it is recommended that you put the trans in reverse otherwise the computers will "talk" to one another, ergo battery drain. So, the C7 is different? Lastly, do the silica packs have a life span? Thanks and Save the Wave with hopefully and early spring to bring the "Wave" alive again. lol
Thanks, Peter. I actually read that the dryer sheet thing doesn't really affect mice like we originally thought. It apparently does have an affect on some bugs, though. I've always kept all my cars in 1st gear when storing, the battery tender will keep the battery charged if anything is still "talking" and the silica packs DO have a lifespan, once a year I take the pack I have and bake it at 200 degrees for about an hour and that actually forces the water out of it. This particular pack I got from a friend and they are pretty high end packs of silica gel so normally it's cheaper to just throw them away and get new ones every winter.
Well, to each his own on the dryer sheets. I find a scent I like and actually keep a few under the seats all year long. Just change as needed or desired. As to the exhaust tips, another alternative to your microfibers is to use steel wool. Mice won't eat through those like they can with any type of cloth item. Thanks for the info on the silica pack. As to the mats you got at Harbor Freight, for the area you laid down, you paid $30.? If so, that sounds like a deal.
Yeah I did the dryer sheet thing for a while and they definitely can smell great. Just read some info suggesting they don't really do much to stop mice. I usually do use steel wool in the exhaust tips for that same reason but either will work and I couldn't find my steel wool lol.

How about adding the stabilizer before you fill it with gasoline so it mixes through and flows through the fuel lines to the injectors.
The best way to do it is to add the stabilizer with an almost empty tank of gas and then add about half a tank after you put it in.
And the fuel stabilizer too are all great key points.
