14 Chorus/Vibrato Pedal Shootout (Vibrato Setting)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 чер 2018
- The vibrato effect from fourteen boutique Chorus/Vibrato pedals directly compared with the same loop from an Electro-Harmonix 720 looper, recorded from my Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster.
They are, in order:
0:20 TC Electronic Gravy Tri-Chorus & Vibrato
reverb.com/p/tc-electronic-gravy
(TC/Guitar Center exclusive, a digital effect based on the tri-chorus from the TC Corona and the Vibrato from the Shaker - no longer made)
0:48 Walrus Audio Julia Analog Chorus/Vibrato
www.walrusaudio.com/products/...
(limited edition Guitar Center exclusive artwork, fully analog chorus/vibrato with dry-chorus-vibrato 'd-c-v' mix control, 'Lag' to adjust the LFO delay time, and a toggle for sine or sawtooth wave shape - r/guitarpedals favourite chorus pedal)
1:16 JHS Emperor v2 Analog Chorus/Vibrato with Tap Tempo
www.jhspedals.com/products/gu...
(Bucket Brigade effect based on the Arion SCH-1, with three waveform shapes, Level cut/boost control, and an EQ knob)
1:45 Catalinbread Callisto Chorus
www.catalinbread.com/index.ph...
(Analog effect with Mix to go from dry to chorus to vibrato, Width control for effect depth, and Density to adjust the LFO delay time - on every other pedal here, Width is for the LFO delay, so I got what these knobs do the wrong way round!)
2:14 Hermida Audio Rotary Reverb
www.lovepedal.com/rotaryreverb/
(Digital vibrato/tri-chorus/rotary speaker simulator, with optional spring reverb, now made and sold by Lovepedal)
2:42 Chase Bliss Audio Warped Vinyl HiFi
chaseblissaudio.com/product/w...
('True pitch' analog vibrato/chorus, designed to emulate the sound of a warped record, with insanely tweakable digital control - automatic ramping, MIDI control, presets, far too much to go into here!)
3:10 Greenhouse Effects Stonefish Chorus/Vibrato
www.gheffects.com/#section6
(Analog effect with Width control for the LFO delay time, and a Tone control to roll off the high end)
3:38 JAM Pedal WaterFall
www.jampedals.com/waterfall/
(analog chorus/vibrato handwired in Greece, as used by Nels Cline - the -/+ toggle adds more intensity to the effect)
4:08 Digitech Ventura Vibe Rotary/Vibrato Pedal
digitech.com/en/products/vent...
(digital Univibe and Rotary speaker emulator, with a Modern ’80s chorus effect that can deliver true pitch vibrato at 100% wet)
4:36 Keeley Seafoam+ Vibrato/Chorus
robertkeeley.com/product/seaf...
(digital chorus effect based on the earlier Seafoam chorus, with a Mix control for vibrato at 100% wet, Automatic Double Tracking and Dual Chorus modes, a mode-specific Space control for tone or added reverb, and with the flick of an internal dipswitch it changes into a Bass Chorus, Flanger and Tremolo!)
5:04 Carl Martin Classic Chorus
carlmartin.com/classic_chorus/
(warm vintage-sounding analog chorus from Denmark, with a separate footswitch to activate the vibrato, a Level cut/boost control, and Rate for adjusting the intensity of the vibrato sound)
5:33 Way Huge Smalls Blue Hippo Analog Chorus Mk III
www.jimdunlop.com/product/wm6...
(idiot-proof two-knob effect with a chorus/vibrato toggle switch, designed by Jeorge Tripps, and now available in Way Huge’s new ‘Smalls’ pedal format)
6:01 Boss Waza Craft CE-2w Chorus
www.boss.info/global/products...
(high quality ‘Waza Craft’ version of the original CE-2 chorus, but now with stereo outs, and the chorus/vibrato from the CE-1, the world’s first chorus pedal - the CE-1 is not true vibrato though, so we have to put a dummy connector in the other stereo jack to turn Output A into 100% wet vibrato)
6:30 Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water
fairfieldcircuitry.com/produc...
(analog chorus/vibrato-style effect, but using ‘K-Field’ modulation which produces random fluctuations in pitch like the warble of an old tape, controlled by highly interactive Ramp and Low Pass Gate knobs)

This made me feel so calm I forgot I was watching an intense shootout
I've never felt a need for a vibrato pedal until now.
I know! Before I made this video I was all 'it's just a horrific seasick sound - who the hell wants that??' I really didn't get it until I tried to play something that felt like it needed it. And now, I'm definitely going to go through a phase where I massively overuse it...
I was high and men, that loop just pushed me somewhere deep. I’ve forget why i was here in the first place.
The loop is mesmerizing...
I`ve spent many hours watching videos about vibrato pedal comparisons. This one is the best! No talking, two settings per pedal, right choice and length of the sample, nice background and a few words per pedal written on the side. Just perfect!
i need songs like this....its the best thing i've heard in a long while
you have great taste in literature .
I also have every Michael Crichton so... swings and roundabouts.
Great taste in pedals, flawless in books!!!!
tc sounds flawless
I had this on in the background while browsing and I feel so at ease.
Awesome comparison, awesome playing, awsome literary taste.
TC’s Gravy for its seasick sound and Classic Chorus for its super smooth sound , fantastic!
dude these shootout vids are perfect. keep em comin
The Union Beats I'm trying, I'm trying, I'm trying
Just discovered your videos and I love them! I also use a Boss Katana so it’s awesome to hear the pedals through it. Keep it up!
This channel is awesome, thanks!
Amazing job on the video! Thank You!
Great riff man!
Best sounding shoot out video
I always thought I needed Tremolo pedal, but what I actually need is a Vibrato one. the Seafoam sounds sublime to me
what a great loop!
love the kurt. that's a sweet edition of slapstick, i'd never seen some of these covers
Based on your video, I drove to my local Guitar Center in LA and ordered the Carl Martin Classic Chorus. Can't wait to get it!!!!
It did sound glorious ! I may get one too
@@kevinmalone8903 I returned it! However, as I'm listening to it now: you're right it does sound great in this video. Maybe it was a mistake to return it! But I believe my thinking back then was that the Martin was too subtle or maybe it didn't have an interesting sound. Normally you want your effects to make a big difference and this one obviously isn't meant to do that. I ended up with a TC Electronic Corona.
major thumbs up... again!
Always loved the Callisto. Had to sell mine - miss it. See that’s it’s out of production. Will seek another one of these days - plays well with the kids
We can clearly ear the noise on some of them. The Julia seems to keep the tone clear without noise. Emperor and JAM are great also but a bit darker.
Thanks for the video.
That was so beatiful now i’m crying. And it’s not because i can’t choose or afford the pedals.
Dude yes thank you ☺️ just subscribed
I was really torn between the unique sound of the Julia and the Classic versatility of the JHS Emperor. This video sold me. The tone Julia gave took my breath away and got me excited in a way that I'm sure everyone who watches these videos will understand. I heard the tone of my heart's song. Sorry wallet, this is happening.
So, do you prefer Julia or JHS Emperor?
@@julho1584 Julia all the way.
I love my 720 looper !
Just finding your channel and really liking it. All the Vonnegut books were great (what's your favorite). The pedals were great too. Stonefish, Emperor, and Carl Martin really stood out to me, feel free to send them my way if they're just laying around. Keep up the great stuff.
Ooh it's so hard to pick. Timequake, Slaughterhouse Five, Bluebeard, Galapagos Mother Knight... the first one I read was Cat's Cradle, so maybe that?
Great little film. I was all for the Way Huge Blue Hippo (simple, well priced and sounded great), but then I heard the Fairfield - that's some whacked out pedal (in a good way).
Fred Raccoon Yeah, it's unique. It doesn't really belong in this comparison, but I own one so I thought, why not?
I liked the Carl Martin. The"smalls" hippo doesn't sound like the mk ii (at least to me😌)
Nice video, but a small recommendation about the fonts: it looks good on headings and bigger text, but the small text is a bit difficult to read. It might make sense to use a more readable font on the smaller text in the future.
Good video nonetheless :)
Hey, thanks for pointing this out - always useful to know.
New New Milo boomer
Looks fine to me, really enjoyed both of these videos as a chorus fan.
I would say the best of these is the Julia. I prefer the Diamond Vibrato though.
Read Vonegut Slaughterhouse like 10 times around ... the bad thing is, I like all of these pedal and every of them sounded different and good different
Sounds best when reading Kurt
Fairfield beautifully sick some great ones in there..dang the Jhs emperor made me regret selling my Arion chorus
Tops ones for me were the Julia was nice and clear, Catalinbread callisto was nice also. I thought that Hermida Audio rotary reverb had a really cool vintage vibe to it. The Carl Martin IMO was a bit muffled and lacking a bit. JHS at low speed was cool and vintage sounding also. I ended up buying the Julia after this demo, but going to keep an eye out for a second hand Hermida.
Amazing review of those pedals! I love especially the BBD ones. I own the warped vinyl MKII, but the Shallow Water looks also interesting.
the Carl Martin does not sound like 100% Vibrato, more like a chorus.
Shallow Water is kind of in a category of its own - it does more like broken/warped tape sounds - though it still operates in a similar way to a vibrato or chorus. I like it, but it's niche.
VolcaRock I think the CM Vibrato is a fast chorus as the CE-1 vibrato setting (in the CE-2w part he’s plugged a dummy jack to kill the dry signal though)
Great shootout. I have the Shaker and the Julia, and I actually prefer the Shaker to the Julia... the vibrato moves more in a way that the Julia can't exactly replicate, and it can get brighter than the Julia, which I prefer (tone knob is great). The only thing I hate about it is the switch, it doesn't always turn on when I hit it. I'm not sure if this is a TC problem in general, or if I just have a crappy pedal.
Julia does more than Shaker by far, since it's much more customizable, but I strangely don't actually like any of the sounds I can get from the Julia as much as the one single sound the Shaker can do :P
I am working on the trim in my kitchen, so I didn't watch the video. Kind of defeated the purpose, but I love the loop. I dig that Blue Hippo and the Julia sounded nice. I lust for the Shallow Water but it's $300 and I get kind of close to that with my Ibanez Tonelock cf7
Again, no Strymon Ola. There are loads of Chorus pedal shootouts on YT, but I've yet to see one that feature the Strymon Ola. Why? Is it because it sounds damn good?
I actually have _that_ edition of _Cat's Cradle_ at 1:19, and I'm still seeking the edition of _Slaughterhouse-Five_ seen in _Disturbing Behaviour_ (the variant of the one seen at 2:14).
Damn I want the gravy pedal
I've read all the above books. :)
You have excellent taste.
Vacations - On Hold
Oh yes! That's like a major key version!
What you did with the dummy jack on the boss ce2, do you know of other chorus pedals that have stereo? I have a dod icebox im about to try, and i gad a boss ce5 that if you only used output B, you could get some really wonky wet effects
Please tell me you have the tab or a tutorial for this riff, this is amazing
Hey! I saw your comment and am not doing naything at work. I know it's been a year but I thought I'd at least give you the chords. First half of the loop is: Am7 of some sort, to an Fmaj7, to an E7, then Am7 again. Then the second half starts: Dm7, to Am, to Dm7, to B7. Hope that helps a bit!
Hey I was wondering if I could get the tabs for this riff, it sounds amazing
Mate love this, could you do something like that for reverb pedals?
DAXX X Ooh! This is an interesting idea. It'd have to be more specific though because 'reverb' covers so many types. Maybe 12 spring reverb pedals. Then 12 plate reverbs. Then 12 hall reverbs. (Reverse reverbs I've already done.)
@@ThePedalBored Yeah good shout! I just really love the concept of just hearing the different sounds and no one talking monologues in between :D
Great work! I feel like all these chorus/vibrato pedals need a waveform control. Some of them only offer triangle wave and while it may sound nice for chorus, I don’t think it works as well as sine for vibrato.
I thought all choruses were sine, except for the ones where you could choose sawtooth? Or have I got that backwards? If there's a toggle I always have it on sine, as that was my assumption of the standard.
Turns out I did indeed get that wrong - all choruses are normally sawtooth, I had no idea!
The Pedal Bored I was going to watch the video again and try to tell which ones were triangle but yeah, most aren't sine.
I feel like Gravy nails the Mac Demarco / King Gizzard vibrato
Have you tried The Gulf by Swindler Effects?
Can you please do more demos with the Carl Martin? It sounded incredible in this video, but I can't seem to find any other reliable sources to confirm my impression. I'm not sure if I should get it or save up for a Julia.
I'm sorry but I don't have it anymore!
If you didn't keep it, then I shouldn't buy it, haha.
I don't keep most of them though - can't afford to. No judgement on the pedals, just on my bank account.
Then here's the follow-up question: did you keep the limited-edition Julia?
Coloana Vertebrală No. Not as big a fan of it as some are. Kept the JHS Emperor v2, the Boss and the JAM
Fairfield and Carl Martin were very interesting
The Julia and Carl martin took my heart!
Julia seems modern and Carl's is like vintage, imo. but whatever both are great.
Sir, Which one you take?
(ive never have chorus or vibrato before, so i don't know versatility etc. so that very hard to choose.)
Pour some gravy on me!🎶
tabs for loop?
You have to make song from this loop!
One day...
@@ThePedalBored I'll be waiting!
nice! i can't afford any
Can anyone explain why MXR chourus pedals are almost never in any chorus pedal videos. Are they really that bad?
The MXR analouge Chorus would have been a good contender, if you use the dummy jack method like on the boss CE-2 you get Vibrato AAAANNDDDD the MXR has Low and High EQ controls as well as a mix control....... for €150 its though to beat
Except it sucks the life out your tone when switched off.
What's your favourite Chorus personally? :-)
Can I get the tabs for this please! :)
I need a pedal that has both vibrato and chorus effects, if not I'll just buy one of each.
Diamond vibrato

what's the riff from?
i still don’t know but please tell me if you find out

This makes me want to eat cigarettes and wear unnecessarily large clothes
I wish I knew what this was a reference to...
The Pedal Bored just the indie scene
hit frets. eat cigarettes.
Already got my doc martens on. Time to run this DIY scene.
That’s a pretty proggy riff, though
Sounds like something you would hear in L.I.S
What’s L.I.S.?
@@ThePedalBored life is strange it’s a video game and it’s rlly good you should check it out sometime
Its easier to get a Chorus to sound like a vibrato to get a vibrato sound like a Chorus
Julia or Waterfall? Ugh
waterfall.
Now you're at the wheel
Tell me how, how does it feel?
So good to have equalized
To lift up the lids of your eyes...
is this actually a song? song's name?
Garluth It’s not, I just made it up :) But I’ve always thought of it as slightly Radiohead-esque. There’s a touch of Paranoid Android about it perhaps.
@@ThePedalBored ever thought of recording it? its a really great great song...i repeatedly listened to this video still listen...its the kind of song for me that give meaning to everything...been a long time i hadnt listened a song like this.
Watched this to find the quietest vibrato then saw the msg at the end about the white noise 😑
On to another video this one didn’t help
Not much difference in any of them except for the Shallow Water Good demo tho but no chorus for me
All chorus is good chorus. All vibrato is good vibrato. You can't go wrong with any of these.
Damn ! Someone was trying to sell me a boss vintage vb2 for a real good price but I refused cuz thought it's useless as fuck
But now u have to call him 😒
Cant believe all the HISS in some of the pedals. Dont manufacturers actually try their own pedals. Sheesh!
This video demonstrates tremolo, not vibrato.
Nope, this is vibrato
No these are definitely vibrato pedals lol
This has a modulation in pitch, not volume. That makes this a demonstration in vibrato
