The only problem about this show is that there isn't enough of it. I'd be fine with much less production value if that meant more of Sean Plott and Magic.
i think one of the problems is production. I can't see this show garnering enough views to warrant the production value, it can't be profitable in any sense.I mean unless WotC is investing heavily, which i doubt.
Nigel Baboolal I mean I specifically started playing magic after watching the first run of this show, so I think views are less important as long as they keep getting new players from the views they do get.
Matty Kelly yea they'll get a few new players but I think you're in the minority. Most people watching this I would assume have played magic before and are still playing or use to play and decided not to play anymore for many reasons. Maybe they can get some of those players back too. TBF, I'm still trying to figure out what WotC's goal for the steam of many eyes was, I can't see how that could be profitable either, so maybe they invest more in this than I think, and im missing something.
I think this is literally the biggest heel we've ever had on the show. Like, Chris Kluwe was just a heel because he played U/B Control. We've now introduced someone that obtains sustenance from the broken dreams of innocent children. I like it.
“I’m gonna wait to play evolving wilds because it conceals what colors I’m playing” - Sean after he spins the big wheel and ecstatically announces what colors he’s playing
100% disagree. This was the worst episode of Spellslingers I've seen. She seems really self-centered and arrogant. I should've known this will only get worse when she named beating a kid in a game as her greatest MTG moment... Would love to see her slapped and made fun of, all while getting absolutely land-flooded as well.
This is probably the best episode yet, Clare was an amazing guest, they had good banter and chemistry, she knew what she was doing and was very entertaining. I would totally watch more episodes with just her and Sean playing.
MTG is a great game, but flood/screw is a serious design problem. It really sucks when it happens to you, and it's also an unsatisfying way to win a game. Still, it makes the game easier to get into, since it allows new players with shitty decks to steal occasional wins from more experienced players.
it is something you have to fine tune your deck for. Depending on your card draw having a few too many lands can kill an otherwise well constructed deck. Have not enough lands you can't get the strategy going to do anything. When playing any of the plainswalker/arena games I spend at least 5 games just fine tuning how many lands I want in a deck to avoid this problem since every deck is different.(I just play the online games due to not having anyone near me to play magic)
Lerge Workman there’s also the issue of budget. Not so surprising, but in value. I think Claire’s deck had better creatures in terms like $15 dollar Lyra, a $3.50 benilish marshall, a $20 saga and a simplicity of two colors, we already know that Sean’s deck has shalei $3.50 and bunch of dual lands worth $3.50 and a $4.50 Jaya doesn’t seem fair. Kind of my $30 dollar wizards deck against a deck of 4 $40 teferi or $40 carnage tyrants. I just wished cards were more affordable for budget players like me to build more fun decks. But hey it’s a business.
Wow this series has me trying to convince my wife to learn MTG with me.. Came across a video from the original run and am VERY excited to see you guys bringing it back! Subbed.
These are lovely episodes but PLEASE bring back Jesse Cox. It is one of my favorite episodes of all time. I have kept it in my watch later playlist since it was posted.
I may have made a little kid cry and yell "that's not fair" when I was playing bant unlife in modern. My deck list: 4x Phyrexian Unlife, 4x Melira, 4x Phyrexian Hydra, 4x Slaugterhorn, a plethora of counter spells and land
@@57thorns nope you’re wrong attack Shawn down to 5 he gets to draw 1 extra card and then dies. Attack the planeswalker Shawn still gets to draw 1 extra card but now has 10 life
She did what I would do. Prolong the suffering as much possible. The only thing she failed to do was say : “Come on, Sean. Assume the position and take some of my black medicine.” Queue the evil laugh. 💀
Just a heads up Day9, the way you shuffle your deck does not actually randomize your cards. Cutting a deck that way takes hundreds of cuts for them to be statistically random whereas a standard riffle only takes 5 or 6 most of the time depending on how many cards you're shuffling. Pointless nerdy info for no reason!
2:28 - "Lets both stretch by putting our elbows behind our back and thrusting our chest forwards". I see what you did there Sean, you smooth operator you!
No. I just remember it so clearly when Jesse cheated and all of the cards were lands... Thats why I say that this is so similar.. XD Sean got pretty much only land.
as always Clare is awesome and i am happy she won handily, sorry, i don't play Magik, but i love watching your show, keep having fun and bring more nerds in to play and have fun, thank you all.
5:15 My friends always have this rule when we play casually that, if we play a spell that let's us search the deck, and what we want is on the bottom, we can skip on the shuffling because we only peered at the bottom card. Sure, shuffling may help with moving a card you want closer to the top, but it can also drop it lower and we are more concerned with saving time and having fun.
I really wish they sped the gameplay up and fit in a full match of proper Magic (first to 2 wins wins). Slowrolling a one-sided win isn't exactly entertaining for anyone.
Damn not two minutes in and well there is the reason i watch this, even though i havent played magic in years, Day9 is just a phenomenon of niceness and curtesy, with some lovely quirks.
Pretty sure Wil isn’t on board to bring it back with what happened with last season that came out. Since then Game the Game was G&S’s response with similar format but tbh it features some games that are more complicated and wouldn’t necessarily be applicable to younger audiences.
It is always fun to watch these episodes, but it gets kinda dumb when games are like this one where one player is pretty much playing by herself and the other one is just sitting and drawing just lands. That is obviously nature of MTG but it isn't really that exiting to watch as a viewer :S
Danny Knight an episode fondly remembered by everyone (except Sean). But at least in that episode Sean had a board.... right before everything got wiped xD
Oh yeah. In terms of the amount of mental anguish and torment Sean went through, that one takes the cake. But Clare ending the game with 45 life to Sean's 0 is it's own level of priceless.
I really dont like the episodes where they are so one sided. I mean i know that's how games go a lot, but on a scripted show if a game goes that way you should at LEAST play a second game too. Its more fun to see games where stuff actually happens for both sides.
Better yet, they should only have the wheel for people who aren't very good at Magic. Last season when he played Kluwe, they picked their decks based on what they like and it made for an interesting game. Doing that would at least keep a huge mismatch from happening since shaun could have picked something that wasn't trash.
I mean it was relatively entertaining but I agree it might be worth it to get an actual game going. Basically all Sean did is ramp to a board clear and ramp some more.
I'm confused as to why they kept this game and aired it. All Sean drew was land or land search for the most part. I've played games like this before. Sometimes you just have to scoop and move on because you're drawing like shit. But this is an episode of a (TV show?) meant for entertainment... I wanted to see these two actually battle it out, not Sean play 12 lands in a row.
By reeeally straining to drag out the show's running time by repeating the same inanities about how fun it is to win/not fun it is to not draw stuff. Yes. Much graceful. No knock to the players, there just wasn't anything to talk about.
I feel like they could have easily just cut this and played a second game where it's an actual game/battle, not Sean just drawing land each turn while she sweeps. I understand this happens in games sometimes, but this show is designed for entertainment purposes. I'm not alone in thinking this way. I think a lot of people would've been happier if it was an actual match.
Didn't her one knight have hexproof on it? Or would that not have mattered against the spell that cleared the board. Either way, this curbstomp battle was delicious lmao.
Protection, Hexproof, etc. don't work unless the spell's text is "targeting" or dealing damage to said creature. If it's a Wrath of God-esque card that just says "all creatures" or "all permanents", it still dies.
I think you answered your own question, but Knight of Malice has hexproof from white. If Shivan Fire were white, that would have prevented it, but it's red. Of course hexproof and protection do nothing to stop Urza's Ruinous Blast.
That's an interesting question that Sean proposed while they were shuffling. "What is your most dramatic MTG experience?" Mine was shortly after my friend got me back into the game. He invited me out to grab some lunch and a "quick" game with some of his friends. So, I'm sitting there, eating my sandwich while he plays against his friend, she was running a red phoenix deck. Their game didn't really run that long, about 20 minutes maybe. She saw that I brought a deck and wanted to square up. So we get going, and I was able to run my ultimate combo in that deck at the time, a Voltron strat of Ajani's Pridemate + Sunbond + Gift Of Orzhova, she only had so many creatures, and my board was littered with cards like Nyx-Fleece Ram, Wall Of Essence, Ajani's Mantra, and Fireman Angel. That "quick game" turned into a 2 hour affair because she didn't have enough burn to overcome my ridiculous life gain, and my creatures didn't have trample. We eventually stopped counting the power/toughness of the pridemate after it was an 87/87. I only won because I finally drew Mass Calcify before overdrawing to death.
Just about any basic deck could have trashed him with that performance... obviously it needs to be tuned. Unless there's like a 30 mana instantly win the game card it probably doesn't need that much land/ramp
Taerdin well that’s life. Get over it. He did have some good cards like shaeli, voice of plenty and beefy green creatures. Like that 5/5 kicker dinosaur. Probably vertex bladewing as well
I don't think I need to 'get over' anything. I simply made a comment that I thought the deck Sean had to play was bad. You're the one getting all in a tizzy about a simple comment.
+DannyKnight That is correct. It was Felicia Day. He won against 2 out of the 7 lady guests on the show. Which is actually a better victory ratio than he has against the gentlemen guests on the show.
Clare is an embodiment of Nature, a reminder that there are forces against which there is no defense: the Krakatoa eruption, a cosmic ray burst, black hole event horizons, being ambushed by a polar bear or Siberian tiger, or asphyxiation at the summit of Mt. Everest... these are things that you cannot stop once they start happening, so your path of wisdom is simply to stay out of their way and hope to enjoy their blazing glory from a safe distance. In return for this service, Clare gets to have more fun just being herself than perhaps anyone you will ever meet. In the old days, they were called "Berzerkerganger" :)
+HighLanderPony so you noticed that she showed poor sportsmanship indicating she has a bit of an ego on her (or she hates men and revels in their defeat even if they are like 9 or something). Then again considering she's attached to the entertainment industry... we may be looking at someone with a touch of NPD.
If you watch her and husband Seth Green on the old Tabletop shows (and if you don't choke on how cute they are together), and watch the Team Unicorn videos (some are on Nerdist channel), her point of view may become more clear. It's a running gag in the Geek culture that Clare destroys everything equally without prejudice.
As someone living in Utah, I can confirm that every mountain of ours is identical to that card. 100%.
i live in park city it truly is breathtaking
I can confirm this as a Utah resident as well.
I can confirm from Utah county, makes driving to Salt Lake a pain though.
Lol, I love in Utah. I didn't realize how many Day9 fans there are in Utah 😂😂
Yep, all here! I never really felt it had a huge basis for fans of his but is awesome to see!

Yeah amazing. I guess behaviour like that is how "stealing kid's candy" became a saying to describe how sympathic and intelligent a human can be.
“I’m gonna wait to play evolving wilds because it conceals what colors I’m playing” - Sean after he spins the big wheel and ecstatically announces what colors he’s playing

I love this show so much. Sean is a national treasure.
Soooooooo happy to see this series again!!! Keep the episodes coming PLEASE!!! 🤘🏻
"The mountains in Utah are just breathtaking." perfect
I miss these so much. Day 9 forever.
This made my day seeing the guest with a Black/White deck win, makes me ever hopeful for my next matchs since I play Black/White
I have never even played Magic and this is my favorite G&S show by a mile. Keep 'em coming! Twice a week! Forever!
Please do a 4 person commander game this season
More episodes please! Havent played mtg for ages but these vids sure makes me want to.
Mana Screw/Flood is a thing! At the end, Sean is just "Come on. Do it! Do it!". Great episode and a ton of fun.
I was reminded of his game against Jesse Cox. Man, THAT was a mana flood.
The Magic of Magic the Gathering I had the opposite happen to me the other day, I couldn't get Mana on the board

Just got into Spellslingers recently. This is one of the best episode! Where are the new episodes??
Wooooo!!!! Thank you!

I’m so happy this series is back! Sean and this series got me into Magic and every episode is a treasure to watch again and again! ❤️
Love geek and sundry!
Whoever makes the animations for summoning the decks doesn't get enough credit. Those are always wonderful.
These are lovely episodes but PLEASE bring back Jesse Cox. It is one of my favorite episodes of all time. I have kept it in my watch later playlist since it was posted.

I really enjoy these videos, thinking about starting again if I find someone to play with regularly
Honestly, when it takes two swings to kill either the player or the walker, I would go for the player.
The walker is the more dangerous if it is allowed to mature. Especially when the player relies on top decking a ramp deck with 2/3 mana in it.

I mean it was relatively entertaining but I agree it might be worth it to get an actual game going. Basically all Sean did is ramp to a board clear and ramp some more.
Difference of opinion: I, for one, was massively entertained by Sean being completely and utterly destroyed by mana flood.
I paused my video right at Sean’s reaction at the end just so I could leave this comment and say how much I’ve missed this show.
The cut away from his scream was very good
I'm confused as to why they kept this game and aired it.
The entertainment in this series is more about the verbal jousting than the cardboard jousting.
Probably because this happens in games at times & it shows how to accept a bad draw with good grace.
I definitely think the deck needed to be tuned a bit, seems like too much land/mana ramp for no real purpose.
Clare Grant - love your take on the deck and love that you won! Crushing it!
Didn't her one knight have hexproof on it? Or would that not have mattered against the spell that cleared the board. Either way, this curbstomp battle was delicious lmao.
Mister Grimm hexproof protects the permanent from being targeted by the opponent. The text on blast didn't target
Ahhh. And nevermind. Looking at her card again, its only hexproof from black anyways.
Yeah I realized that soon after the first response and looking it up in detail lmao. But thanks for the clarification.

Sean's deck sucked... wow
Taerdin it didn’t sucked, it just had bad draws and shuffles. It’s a ramp deck
Just about any basic deck could have trashed him with that performance... obviously it needs to be tuned. Unless there's like a 30 mana instantly win the game card it probably doesn't need that much land/ramp

I don't think I need to 'get over' anything. I simply made a comment that I thought the deck Sean had to play was bad. You're the one getting all in a tizzy about a simple comment.
This was as good as his game against Chris Kluwe. I think its watching him be in pain is just so satisfying to watch.
Did some standard creepy Googeling on miss Clare Grant, and all i can say is... NICE ;)
Simon P Mr. Plott is stacked.
He's like a soft focus Chris Nerdist.
Edit: this aged well and didn't go over anyones head.
She has a nice butt!
Seth Green’s wife. She got all his short man syndrome in competitiveness.
Kel'Thuzad still hot nerd goddess.
Great episode!! Love this show
she is pretty.
As someone who is not from Utah, has never been to Utah, or even Googled Utah... I can confirm that's exactly what the mountains in Utah look like.
He has a losing record against females on this show
He has a losing record against everyone
Eh... he beat Allie Brosh and Jessica Varney, but overall... he has a losing streak with pretty much everyone.
Apillis124 I thought it was Felicia not janet
sairicfire101 yeah
+DannyKnight That is correct. It was Felicia Day. He won against 2 out of the 7 lady guests on the show. Which is actually a better victory ratio than he has against the gentlemen guests on the show.
Very interesting match, defiantly would love to see that Naya decklist Sean was playing with there too.
Well, that was a non-game.
Clare seems annoying to play against. :P
HighLanderPony I like her style. She was competitive without being obnoxious. She walked the walk.
Stephen Pike I think she lacked humility in victory. No need to rub in every triumph.
Oh this was so worth the wait.
the mountains in utah are just breathtaking
I love that he used the duck reference. Love Day 9.
