If it crimps too much, just hold it a little looser at the back of the presser foot. Use a basting stitch. Easy to pull out if you have to redo it looser.

Excellent tute! I've sewn for 65+ years and not seen that done that way. Is far easier and quicker than the Louise Cutting method (class I took from her) of rolling it over your hand. Her way works, but is harder for me and more time consuming to me. I will do your crimping method next opportunity. Loved it. Thanks. Love your tutes, always learn some new method of doing things. Am just getting back to garment sewing after a prolonged hiatus due to fitting frustration issues. Am enjoying your vids immensely and you have spurred me to return to garment sewing. Thanks much.

Hey Joy, Mary here! This was the first video I watched of yours, (about 2 months ago) I needed a refresher on gathering for some amazing pillow shams I’m making, I thought I’d have another look at this video. I mostly sew with knits so it’s not been something I have had to do lately. I have been sewing since I was 5 years old and my mom was the Goddess of sewing to me, but YOU had me at CRIMPED. I absolutely love you and am a huge fan girl. Thanks for always brightening my day! Especially lately, as I lost my teacher, Goddess #1 on December 8th. She was 90, but it is still so hard to let her go. Sewing is everything to me, it is such a gift and now that I am immersing myself in this world you are in its is even better. What an amazing collection of people out here that love sewing, oh my gosh!!
Hi Mary. I'm so sorry for the loss of your Mother. I lost mine less than two years ago. My Mom was 90 also. I'm not sure the crimping method would work well for a pillow sham. Crimping is when you need just light gathering as in a sleeve cap. If you need tight gathering for lots of puff, you will need to do it the old fashioned way. You can zig zag over a thin cord and pull the cord in some cases. And a lot of machines have a gathering foot. Sewing machines and sergers can do it. Thank you for your very nice comment!
Well done. A neighbor from Brazil showed this technique to me about 50 years ago. I don’t remember if she had a name for it. I love this. You are the only other person that I have heard of that does this. I enjoyed watching you.
Cute top, Joy! (Don't we all always say that because all your tops are cute!) Every single time I make a set-in sleeve I remember my grandma gently critiquing my first set-in sleeve garment where somehow I managed to get the sleeves set in by gathering the armscye instead of the sleeve head! (?) She was very nice about it but I have never forgotten her guidance. Oh, how I miss that dear woman and wish that I could sit down with her over a pot of tea for a lovely conversation. She never called it crimping either, it was always 'easing'. Thank you for the lovely video. I bet this will bless many, many new sew-ers, Joy.
Thank you Molly. Grandmas are super special. That is for sure! I miss mine. Her name was Hattie. She didn't sew but she did hand embroidery on pillow cases. I still have several of them and charish them because they were touched by her hands. She also tended a huge garden, and she was a tiny little lady. She gave birth to 12 children. Five died very young. Times were tough back then.

Set-ins have been my nemesis ever since I started learning to sew some 10 years ago. On my first trial with your tutorial, I hit the jackpot n put it down to being a flook! I was making a quick few holiday garments to take away with me n decided to put in all set-in sleeves n voila, they were all perfect! Oh Joy, my excitement knew no bounds...thank you, thank you, thank you: I'm eternally grateful to you. God bless xx
That is wonderful to hear! If you do get a fussy one, the sleeve cap probably has TOO MUCH EASE in it. You should not have over an inch -- 1/2" on the back and 1/2" on the front. Of course, gathered or pleated sleeve caps would be different and meant to have a lot of fullness.

I love your crimping technique...this will save me so much time...I was taught to use the two gathering stitches but switched to manually gathering using pins, dividing sleeve in half, then half in half, and half in half, etc until it "crimps' perfectly. You guessed it! I will be using your crimping technique from here on out...only took me to 70 to find you on You Tube. I have to thank Becky Thompson (PTWT ) for name dropping your name, LOL. Thanks for this video, Joy. I haven’t sewn clothes in decades. But I am about to start sewing my blouses as I can’t find what I like in the stores or catalogs. I wear 100% cotton or else I have horrific static cling. I constantly shock myself when the humidity starts turning dry here. I have learned so much from you and Viv that I am actually looking forward to making some of my clothes. I’m a quilter at heart but I’m willing to give this another try. Thanks!

Thank God for UA-cam. In this video, I really LEARNED something! PLEASE do more videos like this. Have you ever done any sew-alongs? Even if you did it in segments-that would be awesome! Lots of people know how to sew.But being able to effectively teach others how to do it is completely different ballgame. You have a gift. I am hoping you teach more basic skills like this. I love this tutorial, and can't wait to give it a try on my next woven sleeve insertion!! Thank you! If you get a few crimps or folds that show through on the outside of the sleeve, I have learned that most times you don't have to take out the entire sleeve, only about an inch or so, then re-stitch it, and that usually fixes the issue. I learned that the hard way! 🤣

Love your method of sewing in a sleeve. I've mostly sewn in the sleeve before doing the side seams and sleeve seams so that the material lays flatter. Then doing the sleeve seam and side seam in one go. Much easier for me.

Thank you for sharing your new iron info. I too have been frustrated with irons not holding up. I even looked at the Laura star ironing system. Wow they are pricey. The one you have looks impressive at $241.00 about 1/2 the price of the Laura star I was looking at.

I used to dread setting sleeves until VivMom had that crimping tip in one of her videos - it's like magic! It makes woven sleeve setting as easy as knits. LOVE that fall fabric! Good colors for you. I need to get some more clothes made for vacation, but I'm on a soap making kick right now and can't tear myself away from it. 😄 Happy sewing! 🍂🍃🍁

I taught sewing for years and we always called it “ease stitching”. Never heard it called crimping. It is a great technique for a Set- in sleeve not one with full gathers or puff sleeve. It helps to put the sleeve over a sleeve board and steam where you did the row of ease stitching. Love your videos and inspiration!!
Thanks Joy. I have been using this method of "gathering" the sleeve since our friend Nancy Zieman showed us how to do this some twenty years ago. It always works and I love , love , love it. It works for gathering the waist on children's dresses as well.

Oh BTW I just put a waistline facing on a skirt. I used your tip of using a narrow zigzag stitch to understitch. Worked so well! Love it!

Love your method of sewing in a sleeve. I've mostly sewn in the sleeve before doing the side seams and sleeve seams so that the material lays flatter. Then doing the sleeve seam and side seam in one go. Much easier for me.

Thank you for sharing your new iron info. I too have been frustrated with irons not holding up. I even looked at the Laura star ironing system. Wow they are pricey. The one you have looks impressive at $241.00 about 1/2 the price of the Laura star I was looking at.

I used to dread setting sleeves until VivMom had that crimping tip in one of her videos - it's like magic! It makes woven sleeve setting as easy as knits. LOVE that fall fabric! Good colors for you. I taught sewing for years and we always called it “ease stitching”. Never heard it called crimping. It is a great technique for a Set- in sleeve not one with full gathers or puff sleeve. It helps to put the sleeve over a sleeve board and steam where you did the row of ease stitching. Love your videos and inspiration!!

Thanks Joy. I have been using this method of "gathering" the sleeve since our friend Nancy Zieman showed us how to do this some twenty years ago. It always works and I love , love , love it. It works for gathering the waist on children's dresses as well.

I first leaned about the single notch and the double notch last year from one of your much earlier videos but I still struggle with sleeves a bit. This video was full of great information, thank you for demonstrating this. I can't wait to try crimping on my next sleeve.
