I watched about 6 sleeve easing videos and this is the one where I finally said “AH HAHHH now I get it!!” You’re a great teacher and I can’t wait to try this tomorrow morning !
I sooooo wish I lived near you Joy. I would pay big bucks for sewing lessons from you. I’m a quilter and I’ve been watching tons of videos to try and get the courage to dive into garment making. I wished I would have paid more attention when I was younger to my grandmother, she was a wonderful seamstress.
I’ve been watching sleeve easing videos for the last two days and this is by for the most entertaining one I’ve seen! I’m going to try out this method, too. Thank you for showing me this and for making me laugh a few times as well. ❤️
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm a beginner and you just saved me such a headache on inserting my first sleeve. Im so glad I found your tutorial. Best tip ever. 👍
LIke most others here, I have been sewing many years. And easing in a sleeve cap has always been a hit or miss proposition. Learned to do it by the 2 rows of gathers but now I will be following your method. As it happens, I am trying out a jacket pattern (drafted myself from online videos) and the sleeve has just under an inch of ease. Hoping to get the same great result as you when it comes time to sew the pieces together! Thank you for a great demonstration.
Wow! No clothing sewing experience and I just made my first colonial dress for my daughter. Never put a sleeve in before, watched your video and Poof! a perfect sleeve!!! Thank you for your video.
I learned to sew 30 years ago, and my first experience with setting in sleeves was so horrible, I limited my sewing to sleeveless garments. Thank you for this. I'm going to try again.
Love the last shot of your smile. It's so great to see happiness and proud moments of accomplishments. Joy, you are a great encourager to all of us that sew! Sleeves have always been a challenge. I'm going to try your method!! Thank you!
Hi. you are really amazing. When you smile the world smiles with you. Love your humor and smile and popping in front of the camera. I learnt so much from you. Some gather the sleeve 2 times, just wondered WHY! no need at all. You make sleeve sewing sew easy. Thanks for Sharing n Caring.
This is amazing! I've watched so many videos on sleeves and easing, and this is the first one I actually understand! Plus your sense of humor makes it even more fun to watch. Thanks so much!
Thank you, Mariam. I just put sleeves in a blouse today with that method. It really is amazing. Unfortunately, I could NOT get the buttonhole attachment to work! Thank goodness, I have several machines. Hugs, Joy
You are such a delight. I found your channel recently and have enjoyed every minute of it. Great tutorial. I like that method too if I'm not sewing a sleeve in flat.
You are so great to share this with us. I am new to sure fit designs and you inspire me to jump right in. Thank you Joy. I look forward to more of your tutorials. You are so friendly and a joy to learn from.
I love your videos, you are so witty and you really know what you're talking about! Thanks for this, I've been having a lot of trouble with the sleeves on the costume I'm working on. Hopefully I can get it right soon!
I used to screw up sleeves and zippers all the time (many moons ago). Now, I can put them in without thinking. Like learning to drive a car or riding a bike. Once you teach it to your brain, you can just do it. PPP. (Practice, Practice, Practice). Hugs, Joy
Beautiful blouse Joy, I love the fabric!! Great tutorial, I'm learning so much from you! Thank you for sharing, I needed a Friday evening video to watch. 😀
hi Joy, your name suits you btw, you have great energy and you always have a beautiful smile on your face, thank you for that! I just want to add one last thing, that me being French, I sometimes have problems to fallow what people say, but you my dear, you speak PLEASANTLY while your explanations were CLEAR, SIMPLE, EASY AND DIRECTLY TO THE POINT WITHOUT REPEATING SOME RANDOM PHRASES 3 TIMES OR TURNING AROUND THE BUSH OR SAYING HUMMMMMM, HUMMMM A HUNDRED TIMES IN A 15 MINUTES VIDEO...LOL, it took me so, so long to find a good teacher like you here, I guess it is a rare thing these days, so kudos Joy!!! that's it for me, thank you again Joy, I appreciate that you share your knowledge & Joyful Spirit with us, Goodbye beautiful, France from Montreal xoxox
Thank you so much for your sweet comment. I am in awe of people who speak and write more than one language. I suppose I should teach more, but I'm not really a teacher. I am mostly a talker, lol. Hugs, Joy
omg omg----i love this !!!!!!! I love it when you give us a demo---have you ever given a demo on how you draft your v-necks---I've never made a v-neck and I'm afraid I would cut it at the wrong place on the should seam and of course there's how to figure out the v width and length!!!! hope you consider a video for the people who are chickens!
You should pay $75 (if it hasn't gone up) and subscribed to Power Sewing. There are tons of "how to" videos, and one of them shows how to make a V-neck. I have learned a LOT from Sandra Betzina even though her teaching style is a little ditzy at times. Ron Collins is very talented also. Hugs, Joy
Hi Joy, I just love watching your tutorials. I learn lots of things from you. I wish I could see my own clothes, and you are so good at it. Thanks for doing this...Alleta
Wow you’re so enthusiastic it’s fabulous 🤗🤗. I also follow Peggy Sagers she’s also enthusiastic. Do you know of any tutorials by surefit designs that talk about Jacket making and sewing up ? Keep up these tutorials they’re fantastic 😍
thank u joy. I had to squint when I watched the other one. one day garment sewing will make sense but for now it still eludes me. I do the sleeves first also. I am just winging it. but the explanation was very clear. thank u for taking the time to explain what you have learned. U just don't know how much it helps. well maybe you do. do u use a .3 stitch length when you ease the sleeve cap also? why didn't u use your enlighten serger? dumb question it wasn't set up with the right color thread lol. anyway thanks for sharing. I see it's not windy. lol. bye ladybug keep sewing more fabulous blouses
I am at my Edmond house. It doesn't have an Enlighten serger. I have two Bernina sergers here, a Bernina 180E embroidery machine and the Bernina 1130 sewing machine, and a cover stitch machine. I gathered them over many years. I had my stitch length at 3.0. Standard setting is 2.5. Hugs, Joy
Great instructions, again. :-) Joy, I noticed the tops you wear do not have collars. I do not like to wear collars. Would you please share the pattern info for the wonderful tops like the one you are wearing? Thank you so much.
Hi Joy! I learned that from Sandre Betzina also. Have you been to San Francisco to one of her week long sewing expos? If she still does it , you would have a blast with her.
I order a lot of it online these days. Fabric.com and Fabricmartfabrics.com. I buy occasionally at JoAnn's, but they don't have much to choose from these days, and their prices have skyrocketed.
Yes, I only have one machine that has one. I bought it years ago, but I can't remember WHERE I got it. It makes it easier to see the needle area and is supposed to be better for your posture.
Hi Joy . Thanks for this tutorial. Been sewing for 100 years like you. Watched this video 10 times. Can not seem to master this technique. Are you holding a lot of pressure on the fabric under the presser foot? Are you holding the fabric taught in front? You make it look so easy. Any suggestions? I dont know how I missed this video.
You may have too much fullness in your sleeve. Make sure the sleeve isn't too big in the cap. Hold your finger in the back, let the fabric move as usual from the front. Just guide it. Lift your finger when the fullness gets to be too much, and put your finger back again.
Thanks. Tried it about 25 times. Just gonna give it a rest for a few days and try again. It is so simple. Enjoy your videos and your cheerfulness . Have a safe holiday.
Joy, you do better than Sandra Betzina ( I am a member of Power Sewing too) explaining how to put a sleeve in a blouse! Great video! Sandra gets ahead of herself of loses her train of thought!😳
I tried the finger behind the foot method to gather but all it did was gather the fabric after the needle, so when I let go it was flat. How do you make it gather before the needle so that the gathers are stitched in place? Hope that makes sense 🤔
Oh, for heaven's sake. Ive been agonizing over the mystery of how to gather those #$%$^& sleeves. And you just leave your finger there! 1) Thanks! 2) How dumb do I feel?
I watched about 6 sleeve easing videos and this is the one where I finally said “AH HAHHH now I get it!!” You’re a great teacher and I can’t wait to try this tomorrow morning !

Ooooo….a more recent sleeve gathering video…8 years ago. Glad to find this one, Joy!
THANK YOU! You're tip about the double notches on the sleeve really helped me out.

I love how you explained this, it looks so much better than doing two rows of gathering stitches because I could never get it right , thank you
I love your videos! You're so down to earth and normal and you tell it like it is!
Thank you so much for demonstrating set in sleeves. Really helps.😊
Thank you for this tutorial! As a very novice seamstress attempting my first ever cap sleeve this has demonstrated it perfectly!

Hold the paper pattern up to your body over your bra and draw the v with a pencil. Or use a rtw top and copy it. Be very sure to add seam allowance.
Hi Joy, I just love watching your tutorials. I learn lots of things from you. I wish I could see my own clothes, and you are so good at it. Thanks for doing this...Alleta
Sister Joy, I love that blouse you're wearing. Do you have a tutorial to make it? I would love a blouse like it.

Good video. Also a good idea to put your machine up at a angle like that on that computer stand thing!
Great instructions, again. :-)

Hi Joy! I learned that from Sandre Betzina also. Have you been to San Francisco to one of her week long sewing expos? If she still does it , you would have a blast with her.
Thanks. Very helpful.
Great video...did I hear you say that you only gather (ease) between the notches?
Yes. I gather/scrunch between the front and back notch.
I love your personality but I would like to know where do you buy all the beautiful fabric you use?
I order a lot of it online these days. Fabric.com and Fabricmartfabrics.com. I buy occasionally at JoAnn's, but they don't have much to choose from these days, and their prices have skyrocketed.
You're awesome! Thank you!
I wish I had seen this video before I struggled, can’t wait to try, Thank you Joy! Also is that machine in s tilted platform of some kind??
Yes, I only have one machine that has one. I bought it years ago, but I can't remember WHERE I got it. It makes it easier to see the needle area and is supposed to be better for your posture.
Do you know what it’s called??

Joy, you do better than Sandra Betzina ( I am a member of Power Sewing too) explaining how to put a sleeve in a blouse! Great video! Sandra gets ahead of herself of loses her train of thought!😳
very helpful and generous of you
Thank you so much...sooooo sooooo wonderful.
Is there a particular book by Sandra. Ethics a that you recommend?
Hi joy have you found surefit sleeves hard to fit in ??
No I have not found sfd sleeves hard to fit. If you use the same bust # on front and top of sleeve it should work.
thank you!
I tried the finger behind the foot method to gather but all it did was gather the fabric after the needle, so when I let go it was flat. How do you make it gather before the needle so that the gathers are stitched in place? Hope that makes sense 🤔
I also tried it and it done the same as yours did. I even tried changing tensions and stitch sizes. NO LUCK WITH EITHER.

Oh, for heaven's sake. Ive been agonizing over the mystery of how to gather those #$%$^& sleeves. And you just leave your finger there! 1) Thanks! 2) How dumb do I feel?
I can't hear you
