I’m a kiwi, he’ll be perfectly comfortable sleeping on the couch. The way you eat dinner- veges and grill meat is same as in NZ , he’ll feel at home. Sit around a firepit with a beer and chat at night and look at the stars. Get a ball and kick it around that lawn

I'm so happy to hear that your Son has agreed to come to France and see where you live.
We can't look after anyone else, if we don't look after ourselves first. Having said that, putting the needs of others first, over our own, is being a servant or in service to those around us, Putting others before yourself actually says a great deal about you. It says you think others are important, that you are not selfish all the time, that you are comfortable in who you are, that you are kind, that you are a good friend.

I do that, everyone else is more important than me, I literally put myself last, there's a line in the film "The Holiday" the older gentleman tells the young lady that she should be the leading lady in her own life..I've never been that on any level..I may be a doormat but I don't have much guilt apart from towards myself.

Absolutely put yourself first, self-care, I have discovered, is imperative. Once you have filled your own vessel, you can then be of service to others. Works for me. Do you deserve what you have now? Yes!! And you have gratitude, which is key. Anyhoo, this is my hard-earned and discovered wisdom.

I’m one of your oldie followers Marc….my mother was a stay at home housewife….she did everything for us…. I regret being so selfish when I was young and not helping her with “stuff “ ….l’m sure I’ve been programmed to be like her as it’s only fairly recently that I’ve been able to put myself and my needs before others. ….although I still agree to do things, because I feel when I have time for me, to just sit and watch UA-cam or read,I’m really being selfish when someone “needs” me…..And that’s from someone who taught Assertiveness for years! Easier to teach than practice!

My husband and I every single day remark about how lucky and blessed we are to have our home and land. Do we deserve it? Yes, I believe we do otherwise it would not have come our way - just like yours. As long as we realise life is a gift and we need to have a humble and grateful heart! As for putting others first......well one school of thought is a desire to please, to be a people pleaser. When done to a point of neglecting oneself it could stem from lack of confidence or low self esteem. I have been there. Past tense.

✈ 🇺🇸 🇫🇷 Hubby, our 2 Maltese dogs & I moved to France 17 days ago from NC USA. We had to visit the Hope Charity Shop you mentioned in Confolens on Friday since we were in Cognac shopping for a house. I picked up some really well priced British & Irish yummy foods! Even though we were in Ireland shortly before, one can never have enough Cadbury and we could only travel with so much on the flights. Lovely village, shame so many trucks move quickly through there, it should have a detour for them. It was a delight to see all the British people in a small village store open during close time 12-2! LOL. So many dogs too! Still getting use to the 12-2 store closures, no lunch after 2 and the 7:30 pm closure of grocery stores and the Sunday closures which are especially hard when you are living in a hotel. We normally eat lunch out at 2 to avoid the crowds and stores haven't been closed on Sunday since the 70s in the US. We were sad to see the fish & chips shop closed, but found some at the cafe. Why were so many restaurants closed?

Gratitude is a very wholesome place to get to, and yes you are WORTHY. Letting go of horrid situations, painful to your Soul, being angry of one's lot, seemingly given, is part of life, some have more than others, and when someone tells you, you must let go, and you resist, you haven't reached that next onion layer, yet. Life is like that. Keep growing at your own pace, like the Hydrangea, plucked from the soil, you have choices moving forward.
Yes, you are fortunate to have all that beautiful land, but you made it that way. You spill all your love into that land (and you can see!) now it's time for you! Be kind to yourself. Enjoy your hard-earned efforts, you are not just a care taker, you are a provider of shelter to beautiful birds singing and Mr Bunny.
You can be grateful for your son coming over, some folks lose theirs totally, never to see them again. You have the opportunity to rekindle what you didn't have during the periods he wasn't there, by just being interested in your Son now. :)
Beautiful reserve, enjoy the sunshine, darn wet and cold again in UK

I’ll bet a little terrier would chase those moles and bunnies away ! I think it’s part of out natural evolution as Homo Homo sapiens that evolved in clans/tribes to put others first and to have a yearning to belong. At least our more evolved frontal cortex can help us understand that better now and sometimes make a concerted effort to put ourselves first for a change. Enjoy your visit with your son….have some barbecues, do a little tourism, go for a bike ride (if you can borrow a second bicycle). Above all, try not to put any pressure on yourself. Stay in the moment. I’m sure your son will fall in love with your gorgeous property. What a beautiful setting for a reunion. Maybe you can plant a tree together. Cheers Mark.

    Hi Marc,
I really enjoy watching you in the garden. The transformation is amazing.
It’s great news to hear that your son is coming to visit you in France. In many ways, it’s much better this way. Neutral ground and you have the security of farm to relax and be yourself.
I’m not sure where I read this but It me hard. Here goes,
The moment is wasted on the past you no longer control. Procrastination and arrogance is the belief that there’s always tomorrow!
I can identify with you regarding putting others first. I’m not really sure where it comes from. Perhaps it learned or maybe it’s some kind of calling. I’m not even sure where I’d start if I tried to put myself first.
I guess the healthiest way is to try and balance it, so that you’re not doing to the detriment of yourself.
You know better than everyone that seeing your son is going to be difficult because you have to let him go again. Wow, I feel for you. Make the most of the time you have will him and give him one more reason to stay closer to you.
    Yes you do deserve this!
    All the best.
    Rob.

It took me 50 years to put myself first. a long process. 4 years ago I decided not to fly to Germany to visit my family. Flights that are too long, fear of being caught in a pandemic again and now the high flight prices. I'm approaching 70. I have to get by on my pension including private health insurance and a car. It is the right decision because no one has visited me here in Thailand so far. So I come second for the family members. Everyone has their own life

So glad your son is coming over to visit you in France. About putting others first, I am a nurse, and that is simply part of our makeup. But, as a young child, we are self-centered. The rest, I am assuming normal progression of life. There's always those who never progress beyond the self-centered part. Then we learn empathy and treating others as we want to be treated. Then, we start putting the needs of others before ourselves. Especially if we have children , since they are dependent upon us to survive. After a point, they don't need us so much, one hopes, and we can start dusting off our dreams and care less about what others think.

  • @Linnet09
    @Linnet09 2 місяці тому +2

Putting others first is necessary to have a decent society in which people help out each other, strengthening social bonds by doing so. That's probably the reason so many religions and some philosophies argue in favour of altruism. Of course, there's two important things to remember - the process is reciprocal, so you do favours for me, putting me first, and I do favours for you, putting your first. And secondly, like with so many things, don't go to extremes - of course you take care of your own needs too!
It's great that your son will be able to visit.

You are very lucky to live there indeed, and it was made for you,or you made for it,with you're love of gardening, and the wildlife, its perfect,we only need a few rooms to live in,you can keep your mansions. Really glad your son is coming to you,as you can now share your life properly. As for putting people before ones self, that's me all over. A few years ago I was in a very dark place, and I mean dark, and one I say I took 3 orc4 overdoses, then you get just how dark. And I was continually being told by my mental health team,to start putting myself first, but if was hard as I felt selfish, but no its not,you can still be kind to others ,but what use are we to others if not in a good state ourselves. So now 4 years on,I'm doing that, still putting people first but thinking first. But it's an odd one for sure. Love your bunny, one of my favourite animals,if you get a hare ill be well jealous, they are my favourite wild animal. We had that rain in Keng last night, its now sunny. ❤

In Eastern spirituality, there is the concept of karma. So what is happening for you according to this is... your good karma is what you are experiencing...simply the results of your good deeds...past lives and present. By taking care of your land and house and expressing gratitude, you continue to create more good karma. As for being perfectionist that you have mentioned before...check out the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. Your hydrangea loves a half day of sun and lots of water ...so keep it hydrated especially when the weather gets really hot...check now to remove any dead stems. As for putting others first, check out the Meyers-Briggs personality test ...you may be an INFJ: ...helping others often putting their needs firs, enjoying & needing time alone, has a hard time making decisions because they need to weigh all the options..et al. Your son's visit is just what you need to make some needed decisions...he is the impetus. Check out your wildlife preserve for some good compost. There is conservation land across the road from my house and there is lots of great compost from decaying leaves et al.

Hi Mark, you were interested in why people watch your videos ? Well I watch because I'm 55, nearly 56 and always thought I would love to be living in France in my later years. I don't have an EU passport, my wife does, so since Brexit, I'm basically screwed, 😢. However, I'm spend my weekends and spare time maintaining my property and mostly gardening, listening to the birds and trying to improve and tidy the outside space, I live in Suffolk in a lovely town, with my wife and four children, 3 grown up, 2 of them still live at home and I have a 13:year old too, your videos are great, some similarity for me in terms of how we think as older men, love to here your thoughts as you work and watch your efforts to improve things. We're all on a budget, whatever it is there are constraints and we have to think, research and decide, sometimes put off and sometimes just accept that it can't be done. As mentioned we potter to get things done and there's always something to do, I love watching you potter, here your thoughts and identity with your process and seeing little things progress is so satisfying, your videos, vlogs offer some escapism for me, in terms of that life in France but ultimately I dentist with your views on life and approach to stuff that needs doing. As you would say I haven't explained this very well 😂 your vlogs are just interesting and funny offering a taste of the outdoors even when it's chucking it down, good luck and keep on pushing forward, a little at a time, pottering is the best way, if you get fed up with one thing, tackle something else, then go back and finish.all the best for now Simon.
