  • Diane Hill speaks at a 2016 TEDx event in Toronto.
Diane Hill is from the Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nations Community. Diane attended school at a young age on Oneida and grew up in the community. Diane has an older brother, Zachary, and a mom, Renae, both of whom inspire her and are the backbone to her journey. Diane pays homage to her family and relatives for being the main supporters and influencer's in her determination in education and advocacy of her community. Diane left her community and moved to Toronto to pursue education at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. Through work with other students, and the elder on campus among many other community influences Diane began to pursue a stream in the Health Studies program. Diane has always had a passion for connecting with people and advocating for indigenous issues; she intends to do so for her academic career in the health field and further on for her community.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Great work Diane, you are very courageous and I admire you for your actions. I am Nahua and I can relate with you even though we are so far apart. La lucha sigue.

Well said. I agree that education is the only path to help a community to grow. Mandatory course about indigenous culture is already part of the education system now.

Thanks Diana for speaking out for your people. Only got to know about the plight of Canada's indigenous people a week ago after Al Jazeera aired a documentary about it. I must say I have been horrified and deeply traumatised watching the children snatched away from their families and this going on for decades? What a tragedy.
Continue to stand strong and regain your rich heritage!

It went on for generations. My mother and grandmother went to residential schools, and I was taken from my mother for assimilation into white foster homes. When you go further south, there more generations stolen from their families.

Thank you Diane. I feel as if there is a huge chunk of Native history that has been redacted and hidden from all of us. That by imposing our version of Canadian history over Native culture and history we are all worse off. Western culture has been very efficient at silencing the Other. Here's to you and your valiant effort to break free of Western colonization.

Are you related to Cornelius Hill/Onangwatgo? He was the last hereditary chief of the Oneida tribe in Wisconsin. I'm also Bear Clan! He is was great great great uncle.

We are forgotten. There are some Natives that make their living studying themselves like you and there are others who want to be free of the Canadian government. True sovereignty is the only way we will receive respect and be safe. We need a country in our homeland more than anything. We will NEVER be allowed to fully rebuild and help all of our brothers and sisters. I see gangsters and drug addicts in my city and nobody helps, they are bitter and violent or have just given up. Rise up or slowly rot away within this land which is given to immigrants freely and stolen from us.
