Burnout's Obscure, Unsettling Japanese Inspiration...

- Did you know Burnout was inspired by a Japanese arcade racer from the late 90s, and its subsequent sequels. However these games are not as innocent as they look.. むしろ面白かった.

I have played all three games in the series. Thrill Drive 3 has a haptic seatbelt feature that you wear before playing that literally strangles you when you get into a crash.
What does it do?
@@l3wismoreman9227 exactly as I described it, it tightens up around your chest when you crash. Simulating the feeling of getting thrown forward in a head on collision.
@@GTChucker86 oh ok got it but doesn’t it hurt I’m mean you said it is used to simulate the feeling of being in a car crash?
@@l3wismoreman9227 nah it doesnt pull that hard, just a moderate tug at best.
Although they did have stickers on the seat that said if you are under 160cm (5'2feet) they advise you not to use the seatbelt in risk of strangulation.
yup the 3rd one have seatbelt
Thrill drive: *you crashed, you killed people...*
Burnout: WOW YOU TOTALLY CRASHED, YOU KILLED PEOPLE, KEEP IT UP, ALSO HERE'S THE BEST POP PUNK MUSIC MONEY CAN LICENSE!
Yandere Animes: You're gonna scream. Well. I Will Marry You
Fun fact : Burnout 1 actually has a canceled Japanese version under the name "Heaven's drive", which goes even more to show its inspiration. It was canned after the deal didn't went through with Sega (not Konami oddly). The Japanese build was actually found last year and it can be downloaded from The Hidden Palace.
Also Thrill Drive 3 actually ran on a retail PS2, Konami only gave it a custom BIOS and a few tweaks to support dongle protection and JVS.
wasn't Sega supposed to publish it as Grand Heat in Japan?
Good 'ol Konami Python
@@dogey8831grand heat was after heaven's drive was canceled
Never heard of this, thanks for the video. Your voice is WAY too quiet though. Even just rebalancing the audio in editing would go a long way but I'd also recommend editing the audio separately
thought it was just my phone
As far as I can see, the original series is pretty much one whole PSA on driver safety. Hell, even the third game has something about how much damage you would've caused as well as how long your license would've been suspended in the real world.
we should do this more often in real life then :p
So Thrill Drive 1 is intended to be a deconstruction of racing games despite being an arcade game?
@@makmakg242 wow so its literally burnout evangelion
@@d9zirableSo Star Wars KOTOR 2 is also Star Wars Evangelion?
I like how Burnout is the complete opposite of it lol
If you want to pick the other locations, you have to calibrate the steering in the game's Test Menu. Trust me, it fixes the problem.
will do
This game might be the perfect example of "horror thriller racing game". This game looks outdated and even cringe now, but if we look at this game through the eyes of a gamer in 1998, maybe this is a game with the scariest visual effects in a racing game.
I played this in the UK when I was a kid in about 2002/2003 and it was weird how unsettling a racing game could be. Been trying to remember what it was called for years until I came across it again just tonight. Would love to play it again.
Reddit tier comment
makes sense that they were inspired by this
if you go back and play the first burnout it is basically a polished version of this with a toned down brutality
the panic music kiccking in after a certain amount of crashes on a track creeped me out as a kid
inspired by what? I can't fucking hear shit
Oh my god, you just unlocked a memory i've forgotten about for years, I remember playing Thrill Drive 3 in the arcades and my god that game was loud, the speakers were at the headrest of your seat and they were always at full volume, so everytime I crash, the screams go directly into my ears, still haunts me today
This is an excellent case of deconstruction of the street racing genre so common in games because it shows the very real consequences of street racing in a busy environment of the city.
Funnily enough Thrill Drive started how it did and eventually turned into Burnout 3 with checkpoints by the 3rd game, except you could also drive as a Rubby Ducky being called Ducky by the cops. Hey TD4 even has powerups and absolutely NOTHING unsettling about it.
They do have a sense of humour as it seems
For nearly 20 years I've been trying to remember what this game was called. I knew as soon as I saw that little red corsa I finally come across it again. I remember playing it in arcades back in the day and being unsettled by it. With it's music and the faces and screams that would appear after crashing. Would love to play it again.
For me it was the yellow Barchetta and the bus. I used to love this game
What game is it
@@And-War Thrill Drive
Same bro, I've been finding this game for years. I never knew the name of the game (Becuase it was in Japanese) until this Chad uploaded the video.
Can't believe you found my childhood at first I thought this just normal arcade racing than BAM suffice to say I never get close to the machine of this game ever again
Haha that's an interesting story!
Would really love a modern game like this. Like a realistic horror racing game full of unsettling sounds and disturbing imagery
Yeah hasn't been done, aside from here sorta, imagine seeing bloody ragdolls just flying out of cars
There is one, it's first person though, let me find it
It's called Dead End Road, here's some gameplay ua-cam.com/video/0XOtk99yzPQ/v-deo.html
Tbh this is how i see racing games in anyway, the realistic graphics gives me a PTSD of Battlefield 3 & 4 instead
i just really wish racing games had horror vibes, deep story line and eventually not to be very realistic cuz idk why triple A games nowadays kept pursuing having real life graphics
@@true_neutral3378you ever find it?
I always found interesting the apparently random car selection, I mean, a Fiat Barchetta, Opel Corsa Swing and Ford Mustang to name a few, it's like the developer used RNG or something. Not to mention the bus, the truck and everything else.
can Alex Ward come up with literally anything original...
Live Leak sim
XD
The drastic change in tone would explain why Burnout 1's music turns a LOT more dramatic after you crash... three times, if I remember correctly.
I always found the OST shift to be a bit unsettling, as a kid. Now I know why they did that.
I played this on an arcade machine for a couple minutes when I was a little kid on vacation and it totally stuck with me. It was unlike anything I had seen at that time at home on the PS1, until Burnout came out years later on the PS2. It bugged me for more than 20 years until I found a random comment on UA-cam that referenced this game, it was like a life long mystery was finally solved. I'm glad more people are talking about this, the crash physics and graphics definitely seem like they were ahead of their time and the influence this had on Burnout is undoubtable.
22 years ago I got a game called "Midtown Madness" bundled with a new PC. That's what this reminds me of. Very similar game.
If im not mistaken they came out the same year
Midtown Madness was my first racing game. Fun to play and the reason why I enjoyed Burnout mechanics.
Midtown Madness was the GOAT, all my friends and relative had that amongst some other classics.
Now that you mention it, this is the game that is most similar to the first burnout, the happy music at the beginning and the dramatic one after the crash was something great, I don't know why they removed it when burnout 2 arrived.
Ahh the game that traumatized me back when i was like 5, avoided it at all cost whenever i was in Arcades.
I got to know this game through some really obscure reference made in another Konami game lol
It's from Busou Shinki Battle Masters - One of the character specific special move is called "Thrill Drive" and it involves ramming the opponent in vehicle form
Basically, Burnout 1 and 2 are Thrill Drive rip-offs.
Whenever I visited Japan I would play this game at the arcade. However it was also recently I discovered the English name of the game.
Interesting!
Welp, this definitely isn't unsettling with the videos that I keep seeing of young people driving cars real fast, and the apparent news of that phenomenon having the outcome of crashes. No, not at all.
Man I remember running into one of these arcade machines and had a blast, never knew what it was called, thanks!
I don't really care for Burnout games past the first, but I really like Konami games and enjoyed the first one, so this looks like my kind of thing.
This was at my local Arcade in Italy. Loved it.
Thrill Drive Crazy Streets:*cricket noise*
Yeah never forgotten about thrill drive 4
how did you play this? on mame or on a actual arcade?
if you played it on mame how did you get it to run?
It booted up just fine for me after i placed the game files in the roms folder on MAME
"Your IQ is increasing" 💀
Sadly, both Thrill Drive 2 & 4 are unplayable without real arcade hardware. Thrill Drive one is playable on MAME*
*0.144 only
I play this in 2000 , each crash was scary asf. Scream was loud asf in the booth
don't know if it was mentioned in the comments but the location test version before release actually had the ability to run over civilians to somewhat gruesome effects. the feature was removed as a konami developer at the time when asked about it, said "we didn't want any controversy" or something along those lines.
Hopefully that version leaks online if it hasn't already
Man this resurfaced memories of me getting jump scared by that damn scream in the arcades. They were so loud even amongst other machines.
Being an arcade enthusiast it's probably obvious I'd mention this but, emulating this series won't do it justice since sitting in a real cabinet really is a special experience with this game. I shall never forget those screams..
If anyone wants to see more gameplay I recommend the channel CrazyUniform88. I love watching his arcade gameplay videos and he loves to play the Thrill Drive games regularly.
I love how the Japanese always enjoy lesser-known cars in video games.
I remember the second game as a kid
I never played it, I was too scared pissing myself watching someone else play it while I hear the screams play
you don't want to mentioned burnout 3 crash + burn / see you in hell?
I thought that topic has been pretty widely covered already so there wasn't much for it to be included
The game tells a message. That driver always say "oh i got this or im good driver on the road". Having a car is like having a loaded gun. Once you crash with someone you will die or the person in the crash will die as well
Learn to actually drive, and wear a damned seat belt.

Why does your audio gets quiter and quiter as the video went on
Wow! Burnout was inspired by this game.
I'd recommend investing in a pop filter.
There's apparently a 4th game, but not even the Wiki has info. Lost game?
Lost Media for sure
Not quite. I've seen footage of it. Though it seems more like a generic arcade racer with powerups. Someone allegedly got a board for it and is working on trying to dump it.
It's known as Crazy Streets Thrill Drive
Man... Konami could have had something going. Imagine Thrill Drive's realistic crashing combined with Enthusia Professional Racing's driving physics
I think damage model was ahead of its time before grid in 2008 and of course burnout games especially burnout paradise with over the top slow mo deformation and today beamng drive
I wonder why the Impact Time sounds in Burnout 3 were unsettling…
I remember when I was in Japan, I'm pretty sure I saw Thrill Drive 3 in an arcade I went to. Since I can't read Japanese though I couldn't read the name, but it looked interesting
your voice is too low mate
*”YOUR IQ IS INCREASING”*
Finally someone made a video about Thrill Drive!
I vaguely remember playing this on breaks while working at a service station for a brief period of time. It was 20 years ago but i do recall there being 2 machines & either a 2 player option or me & one or two colleagues would race at the same time to see who could get further. I was also fairly competent on PS1 racing games at the time & remember this feeling simultaneousy janky & brutally unforgiving with it's physics.
I've just come across it again after about 20 years of trying to remember what it was called. Used to love playing it in the arcades because it stood out from the rest with how unsettling it was.
@@M_1995_ Funny how a random thumbnail can spark a lttle nostalgia trip lol :)
@crimsonkate8241 Definitly, would love to play this again but I doubt any arcade in the UK would still have it. It's a relic at this point.
@@M_1995_ Yeah, you'd need the skills & set up to run it through an emulator or something which is beyond my knowledge. Would be interesting though :)
please speak louder next time! It was really hard to hear you.
Will Do! I'm already tackling this issue!
I used to play 2 of the titles (Thrill Drive 2 and 3) since my local arcade used to have the machines.
These arcades were mostly infamous here with patrons often leaving the machine when the 'scream' SFX plays upon getting into an accident.
OMG I've been searching for this racing series for years. I played it on arcade in early 2000s during holidays in Italy. It was always a hidden gem for me. For years I was searching for this as some game similar to Burnout. Well done UA-cam algorithm
Traduzcan. Este juego estaba en su version Arcade en el shopping más grande de mi localidad, en Argentina. Era una locura para su tiempo. Muy violento y difícil para niños. Jamás creí que lo volveria a ver. Era de mis favoritos
I've played a lot of Thrill Drive 2 and I loved that game, other games in the series... Not as much but they are good
Any chance this was a retooling of a driver's Ed training simulation? I know those were popular back in the 90s. We even had one that would simulate drunk driving and "how had it was" in our science museum as children
I saw Volvos and clicked immediately
chad
I recall playing Thrill Drive with dad in the Philippines. That was basically Initial D or Maximum Tune but with CRASHES!!!
Your mouth is causing some reverb, explains the pop, I would recommend getting a pop filter.
I remember the local theater I went replaced the Daytona 2 cabinet for Thrill Drive, I didn't liked the vibes of this game by judging the attract mode, creeped me out
This sounds like a creepypasta game
my man you need a pop filter, other than that great video. Never heard of this game before.
Decent video but uh dude, your audio's way too low. Also the in-game audio in contrast is way too high compared to your voice.
Your voice is WAY too low and I'm already on highest volume on my computer.
i think i played one of these games in the late 90s or early 2000s in an arcade. it was really fun.
Now that I'm done watching your video, I can turn my volume back down from more than three times what I normally set it to. You should work on that.
So what’s the name of this game
Thrill Drive
it's almost impossible to hear your voice in the video, the music and other audio completely drowns it out.
truly the Spec ops: the Line of arcade racers
you need to learn to normalize your audio. otherwise its a deccent video. not my cup of tea but still decent
good video, though i recommend getting a new mic, its quite hard to understand you.
nice video but i literally cant understand a thing you're saying
i had to wear 2 headphones to hear what you said in the video (at the start atleast)
Interesting to note! You need a better mic, but otherwise good content :)
Am I the only one who thinks this game isn't all that unsettling at all?
I thought my volume settings were bad
No wonder Burnout more or less took humans out of the equation
Wow, i never even heard about this series.
whats the game name pls , brain dead pls
Thrill Drive
@@eurikadude yes !! i found it , yesterday i was tired t o think gg
Going to page 2 of Google is a Thrill Ride in it's own right.
Thrill Drive 2 for me the best of the bests. 👌🏻
This was the first and only game that actually made me uncomfortable while playing it.
What was the music use in this video?
Burnout 3 OST - Series Unlock theme
Tokyo Xtreme Racer OST - Alpine glow
Thrill Drive 2 OST - Menu Theme
Thrill Drive OST - Results

I remember magazines at the time said Burnout 1’s original title was “Shiny red car”, and that outrun was a big influence.
But for sure this looks VERY similar to the first game.
Well, I must say that a while back I didn't know this existed until recently. I would consider this arcade racer to be so bad, it's actually good. I just wish we had this at the D&B's in the States though.
"you should not have a license" lol
lmao this arcade machine spooked me as a kid
ahhh I wish I could go back to it as a much more decent driver now haha
Wow the audio is so low i thought it was a ASMR
No way, an export mustang in a game
someone should use the drive bmg engine and make an unsettling arcade racer like this
Your audio is too quiet in this video
Damn you're quiet af
I wonder Thrill Drive Series Was in Nintendo Switch
I don't think so
This game is awesome!!!! I play it on MAME however my computer is a little too slow to run it at full speed, but it’s fast enough to be playable. Sadly, Thrill Drive 2 is unplayable on every emulator. Same goes for the 4th game (Crazy Streets).
Update: Thrill Drive 2 is slowly becoming playable. The next version of MAME should have some gameplay emulated
its a lil quiet bra
How did you capture this? Did you hook up to an actual arcade machine with a capture card?
Sadly no, the arcade machines are quite hard to come by these days especially in Europe, the footage here was captured on an emulator.
