94 F150 300 I6 Towing 7,500lbs- Sounds like cummins

  • My 1994 F150 with the 4.9L (300) I6 and Mazda 5 speed transmission towing my sister's 2001 F150. Total trailer weight is 7,500lbs +/-. Towed the truck from Lansing, Michigan to Sterling Heights, Michigan (about 100 miles one way). Cruising in overdrive at 65-70mph, I averaged 10.8mpg. My truck is bone stock except for a $50 Napa turbo muffler and deleted cat and resonator. Sounds like a mini cummins under load. The truck tows loads like this exceptionally well, I would take it over any V8 any day. Please like, comment, and subscribe, but keep things nice. Any spam or hate comments on Ford/GM/Dodge will be deleted.

    Man.
    I'm swapping my 460 out for a 300, for the same reason I ordered a Coyote in my Mustang instead of the Ecoboost.
    The sound is just. So. Beautiful.
    That being said, my particular 300 is getting forged pistons, a custom grind cam, and a GT35 turbo. It'll *really* sound like a Cummins.

    I got a 94 single cab short bed 5 speed 300. Towed/hauled 5-6k from Maryland to new jersey and even with 2.73 gears, did great. Got 14 mpg going 65 with some power to spare. Might regear just to make 5th gear more usable and taking off easier. Just recently did an air intake, msd coil, new distributor set at 13 degrees btdc, Jet chip, and a rear cat delete. The muffler i always had is a flowmaster original 40. Made a huge difference. Cant wait to tow with the new upgrades now installed

      I’ve never heard of a truck with 2.73 gears. Mine 94 f150 with a straight six has 3.08 gears and pulls like a tractor. I’m always impressed at how steep the gearing can be in these trucks. The torquey engine makes up for it.

      thank you, I agree, this is the best 300 exhaust I've heard. Stock manifold, down pipe, and tail pipe, delete cat and resonator, and chambered turbo muffler from Napa for like $50. I kept the same stock exit behind the rear tire (I think it looks better than in front, and the extra few feet help with the throaty diesel-like tone). I see so many guys spend hundreds for headers, magnaflow/cherrybomb, etc, and they wind up sounding like ricers. Keep it simple :D

    I have a 1995 F-150 with the 300 and the mazda 5-speed. I've towed cars on a 16' car hauler and a 14' dump trailer here and there. I can guess pulling the cars around town I was grossing near 7,000 and it did fine. If I was to do it more often I will probably consider installing a brake controller. The most weight I ever put behind it was a dual axle 14' dump trailer filled to the brim with gravel. I had to be pushing 12 to 14,000 lbs. It was rough even though I only pulled it around the yard. I love my truck. It had a little bit of a warped flywheel issue when I bought it so starting in first is a little rough, but pulling trailers around hasn't worsened the issue much.

    Awesome truck. I have a '96 with the 5 speed. 154k on it, no rebuild on motor or trans. I pieced together an exhaust from autozone on mine for about $150. That included 2 cats and 2 cherry bomb glass packs. Stock manifold and down pipes, cut off the down pipes at the collector, ran true duals exiting out each side in front of back tires. Looks and sounds good.

    • @usmcvet0313
      @usmcvet0313 3 роки тому

      @daniel bean nope, mine has a split manifold. Two down pipes ran to a collector, then single the rest of the way back. I cut the collector off, 90'd one to the driver side and ran the other straight back. Cat on each side, followed by a cherry bomb, then 90'd out in front of the rear wheels on each side. 3 cylinders feed each side.

    • @terrykehler1916

      I have true duals on my 87 shortbox 300. No cats no mufflers, just 18inch glasspacks one on each side. I just cut cats off and hooked my 3in pipes up right behind the oxygen sensor. Rear side slant cut dumps behind rear wheels!! Now with a 252H comp cams, pulls so nice from 1200rpm on up, instead of revving it's neck off to get any power!! Will float over hills on back gravel roads at 35-40mph turning 1600rpm with 31x10.5 tires

    Love that sound, miss the trucks of my youth. The 80's and 90's both Ford, gm and dodge Square body pickups were amazing. Interesting though, when I drove school bus, I drove one I likely rode on to school, 91 ward amtran volunteer with the dt 360 inline 6. It obviously was diesel, no glow plugs, smooth, seemed to have a continuous torque power band and constant acceleration all the way up to 65 mph. I've heard that the reason those older smaller engines seemed to have more power and acceleration was due to the nature of an inline motor design vs a v engine style? Both this video and your other one I watched this f150 sounded great and I'd be lucky to get an older f150 up to 96. You take really good care of that ol girl it appears. Lucky guy, great truck.

      Those'll go for ages too! I'm not even remotely a Moparts fan, but that 4.0 is a 400k mi beast, as long as the rest of the truck doesn't give up the ghost!
      Ford 300ci, AMC/Chrysler 4.0L, Chevy 350ci, Ford 4.6L SOHC 2v 94-11, and early Chevy 5.3/4.8L are damn good engines for longevity if you take care of them.

    • @caasiwms
      @caasiwms  4 роки тому +1

      Well, it honestly keeps up with traffic pretty well with a load like this. Take a look on my channel, I have another video from several years ago of towing a jeep, and I can maintain speed and acceleration in city driving. Honestly, if I was towing this much on a regular (weekly) basis, I would probably opt for a 3/4 or 1 ton, but only a diesel. The Gas V8s of this generation truck just didn't quite put out enough extra power to make the mpg loss worth it over the inline 6. The 5.0 V8 doesn't tow nearly as well as the I6, the 5.8 is only marginally better in terms of acceleration compared to the I6, and only the 7.5 (460) V8 well out performs the 300, and that is at the expense of about 8-10mpg. If I was to try and upgrade, I would only consider a diesel. If you are only towing your travel trailer a couple times a year, you should be alright with your 300 I6 1/2 ton. But if you're going out every weekend, get a diesel.

    • @caasiwms
      @caasiwms  4 роки тому +1

      @@betogray9765 I honestly don't know how you can say that. The 300 I6 is particularly well known BECAUSE it has such good low-end torque. That and its longevity. They make their torque down low like a diesel. A 300 will tow better at low rpm than any gas V8 of a similar year.

      I've had 3 & the main problem I've had with them is rust, particularly the sides of the cab under the doors. When it gets bad enough either the B pillar pulls back & the door won't shut, or the seat belt pulls out of the floor. The rear spring hangars also needed replaced on all of them because of rust, and the gas tanks. Rust also gets the brake lines & exhaust. Any one I'd think about buying I'd have a good look underneath at the sides of the cab, frame, spring hangars in the rear & shock towers in the front. The rear hangars aren't too hard to replace, I did the shock towers once & probably wouldn't bother with it again. I'd sniff around the gas tanks if they're not full because they like to leak, particularly the front one, which gets a hold on top near the front so it doesn't leak if it's not full. If it does have 2 tanks there's a good chance only one works, particularly if one leaks someone will replace just one & not use the other, then the pump in the unused one quits. Replacing the pumps isn't fun, the lines require a special tool on the newer ones & isn't easy to get apart. I had a 1990 though that had older plastic lines that were much easier to work with. Finally one I had that was a manual had a Mazda 5 speed (most 5 speeds in a 150 are the Mazda, if it is it won't have a super low 1st gear), the clutch cylinder & throwout bearings don't last & are in the bellhousing so not fun to replace. The clutch seemed to overheat easy too. Overall though they were good reliable trucks, if you don't mind wrenching (they'll probably be high mileage) the early 90s Ford trucks make great work trucks.
