  • Update May 21!
I am slowly in the process of demonetizing all my videos, I was never in it for the money or the glory. I just like to help people. This way you can rest assured i'm not making a video only to trigger an algorithm or as click bait. I have been a bit disillusioned with it all lately, and hopefully this will help.
Instead if you wish to support me you can buy me a coffee or beer instead :) entirely your choice though!

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this video I talk about the two filters that I use for astrophotography, the SkyTech L Pro Max (for broadband targets) and the Altair Triband filter for really zeroing in on all that lovely detail in emission nebulas!
You can find the altair triband filter here:
    www.altairastr...
(pssst, there's a raffle for a Triband filter happening at "the backyard astro imaging club on facebook...
    here's the link : / tbaic )
and the Skytech L Pro Max filter here:
    www.altairastr...
and for those that are interested...the Altair magnetic filter holder:
    www.altairastr...
Disclosure: Bear in mind that the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a few pennies (at no cost to you) which in turn helps to support the astro gadget habit and keep all the reviews coming :D
However at the end of the day the decision is always yours :) and whether you go through these links or not is entirely up to you.

As a beginner to this type of photography, filters are a bit of a minefield, I've seen a number of youtube vids but yours is the first I've seen which actually tells me which filter to use and for what. Excellent, thank you.

No discussion about what filters I use as so far the answer is none, but for someone who is trying to figure out what do I need actually when looking to get some filter, this was super useful! Thank you so much for this Stace!

I feel like a wolly now after asking you about light pollution filters on IG 😂 I must have missed this video! This literally answers all my questions on light pollution filters - living outside London I’ve had exactly the same problem and have been so confused by all the info out there on the types of filters to get. This really simplifies all of that info and summarises it so nicely so beginners like me can get a straight answer 🙏 I haven’t been able to find any videos out there that can give filter recommendations and show personal experience from their uses whilst summing up what they’re best for like you have - thanks Stacey for putting out such helpful, simple to understand content 🙌👏

Our current global 'situation' has prompted me to do some astrophotography, as the sky is incredibly clear right now. I watched your video and was blown away by how much I learned about filters. Clear explanations of the uses for each, with great photo examples. I rarely comment. But you deserve it. Thank you : )

Hi Stacey. Thats a strange coincidence, i was reading about fillters today. They all seem to overlap each other's benefits, somewhere along the line, making it hard to choose. Pity we cant get a filter for cloud pollution, lol. Thanks for sharing your filter knowledge. Clear sky's.

@@AstroStace well I appreciate all the help I can get, lol. I am new to astrophotography, saving up right now to get a star tracker. So I am trying to learn as much as I can, so that once I get started, I can hit the ground running. People like you, Helena, Rory, Nico, Trevor, Dylan, and Delta Astrophotography, all of y'all are doing a fantastic job of introducing people to the night sky again. I have always loved looking at the stars, and I took my dad and my two daughters down to South Carolina in 2017 to see the solar eclipse in totality. That is something none of us will ever forget! I am also getting my daughter's into taking pictures of the night sky, as well as just taking pictures in general. Do you ever do any planetary imaging? If so, what equipment do you use for that?

Cheers. I own an ancient 1.25" Skywatcher LP filter but it would of course vignette with a camera with an APS-C sensor.

Hi I own several filters currently, uhc, EOS clips skytech quad band, and a 2 'l pro optlong. I was thinking of getting a narrower band filter so I could learn the technique (here I would ask you to tell me how) to add photos taken with different filters. I am undecided whether to take a 2 'quad band or a tri band to be used in combination with the uhc and lpro filter. (Remember to show me the technique for processing, thanks)

I am lucky enough to live in a bortle class 4 area in Wales but I used to live in Manchester. I have an Astronomik CLS CCD clip filter for my modified DSLR. It made a massive difference when I lived in the city but I still use it even though it is not so effective for LED street lights, it keeps dust off the sensor if nothing else.

I don't really consider the Triband and Quadband to be 'light pollution filters' any more than I do an Ha, SII or OIII filters to be light pollution filters. However, they do the job, so why not?
One of the things that I WOULD like to see if the processing bit for the Ha channel in the Horsehead nebula shot, and how it's combined with the RGB image. In fact, I would like to see a narrowband data set combined with a RGB dataset from the Altair 264 camera. Is there any reason you can't assign the Ha, Hb and OIII to just about any color you want? The 'false color palette', as it were.
You are a great asset to the community, Stace, and I'm glad I found your channel.

    • @AstroStace
      @AstroStace  4 роки тому +1

Yes Gary :) see the quadband/triband is a bit of a grey one. It's absolutely killer for light pollution if you want to just stack it as is...but like you said it becomes way more than that if you split the channels :)
All those horse head images were on the 269 😁 I'll do a little video on how I combined the RGB with the Ha soon.

@@AstroStace thanks for the upcoming video. The 296, 264, whatever. I guess you probably had to send the 264 back to Altair, but I like the fact that it has no sensor glow. Probably will be my camera when I can start getting back into the game again.

I've been using the Optalong L-eNhance dual band filter (Ha and OIII) from light polluted Milton Keynes. Very happy with it for Ha Nebulae. Also have a Astronomik CLS-CCD filter which while good does suffer somewhat from Light Pollution and the colours need a lot of balancing. Will be looking at a L-PRO. Optalong do one as do SkyTech and others

I've got the Pixel 4 smartphone now and got first taste of its amazing astrophotography mode and I can Say WOW!!! The Stars look so impressive and it's high end DSLR quality.
