  • When Valve first launched Early Access back in 2013, we hoped to give developers and customers a new framework for designing a game directly alongside customer feedback. In the years since, we've seen dozens of successful games enter and leave Early Access. But there are a bunch of risks and challenges associated with selling and developing a game in this way, and our panelists will address the ups and downs of Early Access.
    Panelists: Arthur Bruno from Crate Entertainment, Russ Clarke from Payload Studios, Will Turnbull from Klei Entertainment, Tynan Sylvester from Ludeon Studios, and Tyler Sigman from Red Hook Studios
    Moderated by Alden Kroll from Valve

      they forgot the devs of sxtate of decay the most famous indie zombie game ever built in 2012 that why some of these guyz were never heard of because of that game.
      Edit: Tynan thought no one would discover the hidden content in A15 rimworld that he locked well somebody did me found a way to unlock it colonist female can go pregy. He should learn never just lock away a content you never want players to use, just use it period or remove it completely. I'll release how to use that content when Tynan says yes release how to unlock it

      It's a bug and the OP in reddit haven't updated the post so it's a bug until proven

      +Jonathan Laig State of Decay developers would kinda not fit on this panel though, one thing is that they didn't do a lengthy EA period, but they also screwed over their user base too much - these EA devs have proven they are competent dealing with user feedback and such, the complete opposite of the SoD devs.

      He's already said on the Rimworld subreddit(possibly elsewhere?) that its not coming out this month, and it might not come out next month either. This is because he is writing a completely new set of features from scratch that are going to radically alter how we play the game.
      So just hype along and carry on !

      LearnSwedish better have slow updates than a bad coded and unbalanced game, trust me. I like his way of doing things.

      Denis Gobbi Tynan delivers solid updates every time. This is definitely true. He sets forward realistic expectations better than most indie/early access devs do as well.
      I am still mad about the fertilizer pumps though.

    Whenever you're into Early Access "because you really need the money", you're already on the wrong path.
    Being "out of money" to the point of releasing an problematic Early Access means the project management wasn't correctly planned.

    • @justdaniel3510
      @justdaniel3510 3 роки тому

      Not necessarily, read "Blood, Sweat and Pixels" for examples. Shit happens

    • @creationsmaxo
      @creationsmaxo 3 роки тому

      @@justdaniel3510 Shit happens, truth, but "being out of money" because "shit happens" can be avoided by proper "anti-shit happens" measures which requires proper management skills and abilities.
      This is a problem which comes as far as from the educational stage where people who are learning how to manage learn it in a way that doesn't work properly anymore.
      In fact, most of the problems written Blood, Sweat and Pixels could have been avoided or (relatively) easily dismissed with actual proper management, preparation and, at least, lesser exaggeration and, in some cases, lies.
      There's always a way out other than skipping steps and going for the gamble of an incomplete/bad Early Access release. Always! It's just that people don't always have the brain to think about it and, instead, follow their stress and adrenaline rush.
      "Blood, Sweat and Pixels" could have been titled "What's after Plan B? None." and it would still have fit nicely.

      I am agreed that it can be avoided with proper skills and knowledge. If a studio runs out of money, there's several opportunities to solve that, for instance you can split resources and start a contract-based project, start crowdfunding campaing, or, sadly, fire some people. But go into early access is one of the choises, why not. The main thing here is not to promise players what they wouldn't get, and to give customers as much information about quality as you can. There's cases when people went early access not only as a form of beta testing, but also used it as a sort of crowdfunding campaing, and it helped the developer to go into development full-time, or hire more people, which gave the overall speed up in development. Kenshi is a good example.
      As for me, I think for indie studios it's totally fine, if organized properly, and as a customer I never was dissapointed in projects I supported in EA.
