  • We're building the Toyota Lexcen that Toyota should have built, by fitting a 1UZ-FE engine to our Toyota Lexcen wagon. But first we have to put it together and that's easier said than done.
    Street Machine Carnage is all about having fun with cars. Sometimes it's serious performance, sometimes it's crazy fun, but it always interesting and done on a budget.

    One of the best things about this channel is seeing Scotty have all the same issues with broken and/or poorly manufactured parts that we all face in "the real world" too. For some reason it's comforting!

    • @bobroberts2371
      @bobroberts2371 Рік тому

      Ring manufacturing defect or bores that are oversized giving a large ring gap? Given the bores were not measured, I'm going with oversized bores since the motor has miles and was honed.

    • @Beer_Dad1975
      @Beer_Dad1975 Рік тому +3

      @@bobroberts2371 They were what, around seven thousandths over gapped? You aren't going to take seven thousandths out of a bore with a honing tool unless you are at it for hours, and you'd ruin the tool as they just aren't designed for that kind of work. A typical hone would be 1-2 thousandths tops. Normal bore wear is even less than that - if it's more, then the oil film has failed and then you are looking at a re-bore - and I doubt this engine has ever been apart before.

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering Рік тому +3

      @@bobroberts2371 that was my initial thought, but being that the factory rings had such a tight ring gap on them kind of excludes that from being the case. Hastings are not what you would call a "top shelf" ring. They are kind of mediocre. I've used them a couple of times before, but prefer other brands where available. Scotty is not the first person to comment on the ring gap being too big with Hastings rings. Suggests a quality control issue.

    Watching Scotty at work is very therapeutic. Come across a problem, fix the problem. I'm sure he gets mad off camera and throws everything around the workshop (except the shifters gotta look after the shifters) This Lexcen is gonna be an awesome street car.

    Props Scotty for not holding back on calling out beloved manufacturers like hastings and arp for having substantial manufacturing defects or mismatches in their products.. something like that head stud could cost a home builder like me an extra week from not having any access to a lathe or finding the time for example.. it's really not good enough.
    Loving the build and looking forward to more !

    • @STREETMACHINETV
      @STREETMACHINETV  Рік тому +3

      You're right, it's not good enough. I'm kinda disappointed in some other people who didn't point this out until after the fact. I asked a couple people in the industry, that have experience with these engines, about the studs, and they all agreed that they didn't fit out of the box. Why is this a thing?

    This was super satisfying to watch. The early model 1UZ rods are quite thick. Keen to see it with some boost in the Lexcen. I used to have a 1UZ, and often dreamed of doing what you're doing, but went down the 1JZ route instead.

    scotty most builders recommend a 2th or greater gap on 2nd comp ring to relieve pressure on the top ring so dont sweat it you arent building a engine to run 500,000km.
    these decks look nice and wide so you shouldn't have a head gasket issue.
    hit up the skid factory for an upper intake cover that is suppose to make more power.
    and you dont need to dunk the piston in oil before insertion.... (it should be moist not flooded) yep i said it.
    good choice with head gaskets.
    plz dont spray brake clean or what ever it is down bores before assembly you are undooing your foreplay (lube work).
    good job mate keep up the content

    Putting so much oil on your pistons is probably another reason why your engines rings never bed in. A reputable engine builder told me to only spray the rings with WD40, I could hear the rings creaking in the bores when i barred it over during final assembly - but the thing ran in quickly and never used a drop of oil and I ran it HARD (He did this on everything including national championship winning engines) I actually like that Total Seal QUick Seat dry lube, you only use wd or crc and must have things 100% clean and it tells you if there are any contaminants by changing colour.

      inclined to agree Jude. I watched a couple of his videos and found his work to be kind of ordinary at times. He is popular with the OH WOW IT'S BILLET fanbois, who suck up to him badly, but the cost of a part doesn't make you a good mechanic. Having said that, he seems to either employ some smart engineers, or is smart himself. Not sure exactly how much of his engines he is responsible for. Anyone can make themselves look smart on UA-cam with selective editing, and there are those that tell the truth. Jury is still out on Steve. Scotty on the other hand is 100% genuine, and doesn't hide his mistakes so we get to see what is going on. This alone makes him more enjoyable to watch.

      The factory uses a bolt

    Wouldn't you need to undo and retorque all the head bolts after removing one to avoid warping the head? Or is removing only one not a big deal?

    At least it was just a bolt for the timing belt tensioner that was a bit off & not the threaded hole in the water pump case that was drilled & tapped wonky... Could be worse.

    Anyone know if there is a way to delete vvti / what I have to do to make the third gen not blow up

      VVTI heads are different, so basically, you would be replacing the heads. VVTI engines just need better rods to make big power.

    Scotty mate don't you have a acid wash machine, it would make things so much easier to clean and make things lock so much better as well. 🚓🚓🚗🚗🙌🙌👌👌👍👍😎😎
    Also mate should have got the skirts of the pistons coated, just so they last a little longer, after all you could have mild hairline cracks in the pistons and you would never known about it till its too late?
    Also mate you should have cleaned the blocks surface with the plastic type 4" surface metal cleaner, that way noting will get in the way of the head casket sealing properly just saying .

    A word to the wise mate, while you're there, replace the knock sensors. I've seen a few of those go bad at about 30 years old and they retard your timing with no warning light or misfires. A bit irritating to get to, so do it while it's easier!

      @STREETMACHINETV  Рік тому +1

      Haven't decided if I'm using them or not. Obviously with the aftermarket ECU we can go either way

      @@STREETMACHINETV go the new ones if you can! Knock sensors are yet another thing that have changed over the years and become a ton more efficient and sensitive than they used to be
