    I was just looking for videos on a Yamaha XS 850 because me and my buddy are trying to fix one up that had been wrecked and sat for ten years. But man I really came across a gem. I’m so glad he made this video, I can see how much work he put into it and he is really talented at it all. We have no idea what we are doing but that’s just part of the fun. One day I’ll be able to do a build to this level but I just our bike to run first😂.

    I like that you kept the seat and modified it so now you can take someone with you. Most cafe racers i have seen are 1 seaters. Great build!

    i got a 750... I'm going way more stock looking tho in seat fab... keeping og seat panel and crafting foam to that... you couldnt pay me to ditch my OG "750 Special" side panels in midnight blue... i am going to shield in the rear triangle like you did @18:38 that is almost a must, unless you try to weld in xs650 fender mounts then fit an xs650 fender... which might look small on the 850xs

    I'm starting a cafe racer build myself! Great job! Question: Is it hard to convert these old bikes to monoshock suspension?

    • @christophsimma4267
      @christophsimma4267  4 роки тому +1

      2G J Thank you! To be honest I wouldn’t recommend it. You need to change the whole swingarm and the mounting to the main frame. Apart from that you change the whole physics of the bike and the handling characteristics. So if you really don‘t like the twin suspension, i would change the donor bike :)

    • @2gj906
      @2gj906 4 роки тому

      @@christophsimma4267 Thank you for the insight. I really like cafe racers so I thought I would have liked to give mine a more modern riding position (with the seat higher). The only reason I wanted to convert my bike to monoshock it is just for the aesthetics, not so much for riding comfort and functionality!

    • @martinkupka3575
      @martinkupka3575 4 роки тому

      @@2gj906 Comfort is not so much the issue. But functionality of suspension is what keeps you on the bike. Believe me, you don´t want any uncontrollable wobble of the bike starting unexpectedly right when you are in a fast turn. Don´t ask why I know.

  • @martinkupka3575

      I used a sodablaster, which is pretty similar to a sandblaster, it just uses sodapowder/granules for blasting instead. It doesn't attack the surface that much. After it for the edges a fine sandpaper and for the finish scotch sandpaper, which is similar to a sponge. And to protect it for the future a layer of clear lacquer.

      It's a fehling handlebar, because it's basically the only one with TUV. In my opinion they're pretty short, so maybe you could get some similar ones, when the laws in your country are less strict than in Austria :)
