Creators note:
Hello, my name is Zackary Smigel. I've been creating UA-cam videos since I was a kid. I started UA-cam full-time about five years ago. You might have seen me from Real Estate License Wizard, where I obtained 60,000 subscribers and over 5 million channel views. I have since left that channel for creative pursuits, and this is my first crack at starting something new. I'd appreciate a like and subscribe if this content interests you and I captured your attention for even just a few moments.
On a secondary note, this is my ninth video essay & commentary using this style and format. This video was a blast to shoot and research. As you'll notice you can now see my shoes / feet in the video. I moved my camera back to offer my creative freedom in the editing room. I think it looks good from this perspective. Let me know what you think!
Thanks so much for watching,
Zackary Smigel

New subbie here: I can't wait to binge watch your channel! Discovered you on your latest video, and I'm hooked! This channel is right up my alley!
DANG 597 VIEWS
I CAME FROM YOUR "UA-cam feels different" VIDEO YOU'RE SERIOUSLY UNDERRATED
Found you through nationsquid and I'm proud
Appreciate it! You're the best!
I miss me some old google tho. Like back when you could type in a search query and you'd get LEGIT top answers and not 10 ads
A decent video. But, what bothered me a bit was it sounded like you were almost singing the praises of Google. Obviously, they WERE (and still are) immensely influential to the development of the internet. But, in a longer debate on the internet and its influence on society, these effects may not always be so positive. I would have liked a more balanced discussion of the topic, even if it meant the video would be longer.
One book that might interest you is "Algorithms of Oppression" by Safiya Umoja Noble.
Thank you for the video, and have a good day. :)
Today, we live in a world where an innocent website can be repressed by directing malicious search engine optimization from spam links from other websites at it to make it seem malicious and get flagged and pushed down in the search results into oblivion.
This was a great perspective on Google and the internet as a whole, and makes me feel even better about using the internet everyday. I practically live in the internet now, and it's incredibly cool how useful and connective it is. For example, it is mind blowing that I (someone from the West US) can be sitting next to someone from the EU or Japan and we can chat within 500 milliseconds (VRChat).
What has become harder is to get to know people enough to have mutual interest in doing so.
A lot of the internet has become so unpersonal and few people, even the ones that get to know each other through repeated interactions form a platform independent connection to each other.
@@jannikheidemann3805 I feel like it's a mix of both. You do lose a lot of the small moments that you get IRL when being with someone. But on the other hand, people are often much more open on the internet about themselves and how they feel.
I found you through the yt algorithm video ironically and this is channel is right up my alley lol
Watched 2 videos of yours and youre doing a wonderufl job! Amazing information, delivery and editing. I don't know if you get any help in creating all of this, but good job to everyone ♥
oh my god, i just discovered your channel (through nationsquid, obviously) and i LOVE it. internet's culture, history and other stuff like that are my favourite things to listen learn about... i feel like im in heaven...
Welcome! Glad to hear that. Thanks for the kind words!
@@ZackarySmigel no problem man!!! keep up the good work!!! i hope more people discovers your channel as soon as possible!!!!
i appreciate the midi music so much
It's from old-school RuneScape. A pretty good mmorpg
The google search system has become less efficient in my opinion with less relevant results or maybe my searches have become more specific but I find it's hard to ask it questions. It doesn't understand what I'm searching for and I'm sure AI will become fully integrated in the engine as opposed to being a side thing like bing.
Is google like an onion which is like an ogre which has many layers?
Shrek is life!
Nice entertaining video, channel is moving pretty quick for how new it is.
Hey thanks!
We went from "gotta look that up" and forget all about it, to actually looking things up right away.
this channel is a gem
Dawg wtf the algo just thru you the craziest alley oop! Great start here Zach, keep it uppppppp!
Right! That's how I got here.. I subbed immediately after watching and seeing the types of videos he creates!
Digging the osrs music
Your channel is like company man but for the internet and I'm really happy about it
Encyclopedias were the best. You could learn about things you weren't necessarily looking for. Now we're (mostly) narrowing everything in our lives and losing so much...
i don't know about you, but any time I open wikipedia, i always get side tracked heavily.
UA-cam recommendations has sent me down various rabbit holes about dinosaurs, retro hardware, plant care, arcitecture, nuclear reactors, self care, programming, the list goes on and on and on..
Might just be me tho
Yeah, have you never went on a wikipedia binge?!
@@iwannaseehowlongyoucanmakethis Every time I go on any wiki I get caught up in the links. One moment I'm looking for a certian HRE banner, the next I'm looking at all of leaders of Europe. (True story.)

I cannot believe I watch the premiere of the first TV show episode that used the verb google 😂 I'm so old! 😢
I was expecting something a little more mixed but this felt like Google koolaid lol Very nicely made koolaid, at least
The mix of RuneScape music and golden eye & ssbm sound effects are too tailored to me - nostalgia at 1000% lol
I'm noticing a lot of RuneScape music in your videos and I like it
He’s no Kurtis Connor, but I’ll subscribe

1:33 - Adventure
5:12 - Harmony
I’m liking these videos. Keep up the good work!
Got an ad for google just before this video even started
Weird. I saw your blown up video. But seems like your other stuff deserve more
Hmm, one detail regarding the early history of google. Important parts of the technology which made a distributed text search engine possible was pioneered by alta vista. I think they do deserve a special mention, as it was alta vista which moved us away from the directory based 'indexing'. Google made that a lot better. You mention page ranking and relevance, which were a very huge part of this. Another part of it is the way the google search page looks. It is simple, clean, to-the-point. Everything before it was a cluttered mess, with alta vista getting so bad you had to search for the search field on their page, it was hidden between an utter overkill of 2000 era advertisements.
Regardless... very nice overview of the many involvements google has with our everyday life and the internet.
this is such a good video. ty for this
I appreciate the rs soundtrack.
UA-cam recommendations always has been a bit of a mixed bag.
I'm outside your target demographic in age, but totally in it because of content. I was around when public internet access became a thing, and was witness to, and part of much of the history of it, and have a curiosity about that history and the perspective of younger people on it.
So.. I quite like youtube coming up with this video from a channel I never heard about, and that has been happening quite a bit in the last couple months, found lots of smaller but very good quality channels with content I find interesting.
But I also clearly get a lot more recommendations for things which I totally don't care about.
But getting lots of uninteresting recommendations is not new... that has happened before, and usually after a little while it goes away again, probably once the ai has adapted itself to its new parameters.
What I find much more problematic is the amount of content youtube recommends that would fit with my interests, but is total clickbait.
Wouldn't it be nice if the algorithm learned based on the overall quality of things you watch, rather than just learning what subjects?! Algorithm is just like "you've expressed interest in x so here is every video with high viewership rather than high viewership per subscriber. Also I've ruined your Shorts feed. With love, Daddy."
Definitely make use of do not recommend, though that's a drop in the bucket, ultimately... I'm just hoping eventually the overlord math sees that I aggressively refuse watching the Cocomelon for grown-ups stuff... I need quality provided, not to have my interest grabbed with sound effects bright colors and kinetic subtitles! If you just show me quality, I'll watch...
Great video Zackary Smigel and google taking over the internet has to be one of the most god like thing that happen in internet history :]
Am I the only one getting tripped out by the globe at 5:13
such quality content. you‘re really talented 👏👏👏
i love that you use runescape music in the background
"Honey? Im just backrubbing the directions!"
There is a timeline where this sentence is uttered.

Well, it isn’t a Google onion, you’re thinking of Tor.
Thank God they changed the name from Backrub
Like this content 😊
Lol "who writes these jokes?" Well played 😂
Okay i've watched a fee of ur videos and i have a genuine criticism i hope you take. This video and the discord video both sound like ads. But if you're trying to become a brand spokesperson or something, you're definitely on the right path.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm trying to find my style. I have a business background. I went to business school and also taught real estate for years, so I kinda have that style. I do agree I need to be a bit more casual, I'll try and work on that!
I would appreciate your opinion on the subcultures of the different chan sites and kiwifarms. Especially the farms, the cat and mouse game they have played to stay online has been fun to watch play out.
I know a bloke in his 50s that says "youtube it" or "look it up on the UA-cam". but its for info that is more of a google thing not a watch a whole ass video thing
What about Ask Jeeves??
