Why YouTube Stories Failed

- In the information age, the rise and fall of features, platforms, and trends can be as fleeting as the blink of an eye. One such feature that has recently met its demise is UA-cam Stories. Launched with much fanfare, it was touted as the next big thing in the realm of social media storytelling. However, it is now set to be discontinued on June 26, 2023.
So, what went wrong? Why did UA-cam Stories, a feature with such potential, fail to make its mark? Why did other platforms like Snapchat and Instagram successfully integrate this feature and UA-cam not? Let's delve into this digital tale to uncover the reasons behind its downfall.
UA-cam Stories, launched in 2018, was a feature designed to allow creators to engage with their audience in a more casual and spontaneous way. Drawing inspiration from the success of similar features on platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, UA-cam Stories was introduced as a way for creators to share short, brief content with their audience.
The idea was simple: allow creators to share quick updates, behind-the-scenes glimpses, or teasers for upcoming content in a casual and accessible format. So why did UA-cam stories fail?

Creators note:
Hello, my name is Zackary Smigel. I've been creating UA-cam videos since I was a kid. I started UA-cam full-time about five years ago. You might have seen me from Real Estate License Wizard, where I obtained 60,000 subscribers and over 5 million channel views. I have since left that channel for creative pursuits, and this is my first crack at starting something new. I'd appreciate a like and subscribe if this content interests you and I captured your attention for even just a few moments.
On a secondary note, this is my third video using this style and format. The third time using a green screen and these editing techniques. This time around, I think my audio improved, I feel pretty good with where it is here, along with my greenscreen skills. Of course, something had to happen to add a little drama in my life, I had some issues with my camera this time around. If you notice (which I hope you don't lol) the first few minutes of footage of myself was slightly blurry. My camera was out of focus for a few minutes. I actually tried to reshoot the scene, but I really couldn't capture the same energy as I did with the footage you see in the video. So sadly, it looks a bit blurry for a small portion of the video. Hopefully its not too noticeable! Definitely going to add this to my large list of things to double check when I am shooting.
1. Mic
2. Greenscreen
3. Camera
4. ???
In all seriousness, I think this was still an improvement and I keep learning after every video. I promise you, my viewer, that I will improve my technique as I create more entertaining content.
Thanks so much for watching,
Zackary Smigel

I didn’t even know stories was a thing on UA-cam
That's how you know UA-cam did a terrible job trying to integrate the feature.
@@ZackarySmigel seriously, I’m on this app everyday. I’m not really looking for those features but you’d think i’d have seen it sometime!
Great video btw
Same I had no idea and I use UA-cam ALOT. Hours and hours every day.
sameee
Same
I loved UA-cam stories. It was fun to finally have people care about the stories I posted and read all of the comments. I only started using the feature as a sort of joke, but I came to really enjoy it.
It was all fun and games until no one use the UA-cam Stories, and after that UA-cam Shorts came up, and replaced the whole stories features
lol i remember your short talking about it
I loved your UA-cam stories, but most people didn’t put the effort that you put in
Lol I remember when you posted stories
If UA-cam had allowed everyone to use stories, and used that to revive the old “video reply feature” (ie allowing users to reply to a story with a story) as well… I think this video would be talking about the UA-cam story subculture niche.
They should just bring back the reply video feature then, it doesnt need some wonky substitute
@@four-en-teeyeah I miss that, I miss when you could actively find responses to videos below it. Even though it didn’t really get much traction, I think over time it would’ve especially for more controversial content.
Watched this after randomly seeing your appropriately titled 'this video belongs here,' and while there's a lot I could compliment. Let me say, your speaking voice/ presentation skills are excellent, better than I've seen from much bigger channels. I know that's such a specific thing to hone in on, but still. You know how to pace yourself, use your pauses, avoid the ums, meaningful gestures/ body language. Maybe my standards for youtube have been eroded by the strange past year, maybe I'm just high.
nah u right I thought the same thing
He still cares! Thank god! THERES A PASSION
He's really erudite and has a lovely cadence ❤
Dropping a quick small video this week on a topic that isn't getting enough attention. Next Friday, expect my longer content, a 25 to 30-minute deep dive. Don't forget to like and subscribe!
You clearly understand UA-cam very well. Big ups
@@DobbyTheGamer Appreciate that! Thank you!
it'd be really interesting to hear someone talk abt the failure of all of tumblr's recent features in a format like this, as a previously active user for like 5 years straight (others many more). the comment about Instagram putting stories right at the top of the screen intrigued me because tumblr tried to do the same thing with tumblr live and failed miserably because hardly anybody on the site wanted it around. that difference between userbases is very fascinating and it'd be neat to see some kind of comparison of tumblr to other sites it's trying to copy
I have watched UA-cam pretty much 24/7 for a decade and had no idea stories existed.
Same lmao. Maybe i saw them advertised, but my mind just automatically associated them as youtube shorts
@@darkithnamgedrf9495 i never did
I can’t believe the quality of your videos for a new creator! I’ve loved your videos so far and can’t wait to see what you have coming :)
Thank you so much! That means a lot!
@@ZackarySmigelyou’ve grown so much in two months!! And the past few days have been insane for you!!! Congratulations!!!! 🎉🎈
He's just talking over stock footage
It's very telling that I use this site every day and have never heard of UA-cam Stories until now.
Also me
That’s funny I just came here from watching 111 stories in a row lol
As a UA-cam Statistics Ranker, I love these videos and I love that old youtube is finally getting talked about and how people are talking more about youtube algorithm.
Great vid, Keep it up!!
Interesting, I didn't even know Stories was going away! I kind of want to make a few now!
Kinda crazy how its going away and most people didn't even get to use the feature!
I cant believe this has 500 views ur so underrated
Omg 12,0000 now!
I think they pivoted well and knocked it out of the park with "Shorts". I've heard multiple creators say those have helped boost their engagement
Agreed. Shorts was the right move long term. Still, it is interesting how such a popular feature elsewhere works but not here.
Shorts to me is the most annoying feature on YT.
@@HipHopfan_i hate them so much
@@HipHopfan_I hate the fact that you can't go back in UA-cam shorts, and have to sit through entire short for it to loop.
@@GrzegorzSobkowiczthey updated that! Now you can use the bar at the bottom (except if it's a very short video)
I actually have strong dislike towards UA-cam shorts.
To me the format doesn't do anything better than regular short videos, and does enough worse to make me annoyed.
I would much rather have the same content in video format than in shorts format.
I seen youtubers use stories on here before and when I watch this video I can see why I did not see no body use stories anymore and great video Zackary Smigel :]
Just like some others have said if not as of now I really don't remember and have forgotten UA-cam ever having a story feature except shorts.
fantastic content as always. can’t wait to see you blow up. i mean dude it’s only a matter of time making such high quality content. just keep moving forward. btw your recent video hacked the algorithm it seems lmao
UA-cam should implement that same 10k subscribers thing to shorts because I'm so sick of watching videos made by someone that hasn't even turn 10 years old yet and all the people stealing content from movies and shows just to put on a bad filter and awful music that adds nothing
I remember when shorts released and it was part of the stories tab
I wish they would get rid of shorts too. It's annoying, every platform expanding from their original niche to provide the same features as all other apps. Why would I want Instagram or tik tok features on UA-cam? I'd go and get those apps if I wanted those features. They're deluded if they think any platform is gonna get a monopoly on people's attention... I just don't understand or like the direction big tech is going.
Seems like a solution in search of a problem. There was nothing stopping anyone from recording simple quick videos and then deleting them a week later.
Except that would mess up your place in the algorithm if you keep deleting videos that have views on your channel. UA-cam just looks at that as a loss of views and might stop recommending the creator to new people.
I've been looking for yt stories for 2 months
I hated stories ever since they were rolled out. Only because I was recommended stories from channels I was not subscribed to, plus just leave that shit on Instagram and Snapchat, which I do not have.
seeing the "stories shelf" (which looks extremely similar to the shorts shelf), it feels like the simple answer is that stories were an inferior feature to shorts in basically every way. Like, if you have both, WHY use stories over shorts?
I remember seeing some UA-cam stories but I forgot about them until I saw this video. I think UA-cam shorts took over it and pretty much does the same thing
And there's also the option of making shorter "longform" videos or a community post as a way to post quick updates! Keeping Stories around now could be seen as clutter
I purposfully ignored stories, because I greatly disliked the concept of UA-cam content being automatically removed after seven days. I'm glad it's gone
I didn’t even realize they disappeared
I’m genuinely intrigued by how you created an account, posted about 7 well-made videos, then blew up! incredible work man, you know what’s up.
Actually 8
I think the problem is that no one knew it existed. My brother is on youtube like 5 hours a day, and he has over 10k subs. He has never used youtube stories.
I simply never noticed them. I didn't even know they were on UA-cam.
Even if I did know about them, I don't know what "stories" are in this sense, and don't see the point of what just seems like another type of video.
I sent a video I took back in the winter of a ditched car to my friend and I instinctively shot the video in landscape and bro called me old lmao, I never thought vertical video would become the mainstream.
Honestly I thought stories are just shorts, I was reallly confused about why is there 2 different UIs for shorts back then and after I watched this I realised it was in fact stories not shorts lol
i found your channel through your video why youtube feels different and i really like your videos, they are very interresting ! new sub
Thank you for this
I think UA-cam should be focusing on being the best at being UA-cam, stead UA-cam tries to be mid in copying what everybody else already has copied!
To be honest, I knew they existed but whenever I tried to watch them they were just really boring to me for some reason and I ended up just completely ignoring them. I didn’t even realize they were gone to be honest
I hate the "hamburger model of online consumption" where something gets created that will disappear after a while.
I think a big part of it comes down to what consumers of UA-cam expect… For instance, my audience hated Stories because they are a different type of people and interacting with contact differently than those on Instagram
I don’t have a huge following on Instagram, nor do I really want one… I don’t particularly like the platform
However, UA-cam is completely different and I am way more comfortable with it and the people that are watching me on my court audience are UA-cam consumers. They’re not Instagram consumers.
So when I would post stories, I will get pushback thought my audience didn’t love it they didn’t love scrolling through Stories to find an actual video
They were left feeling like they wanted more because that’s what they were used to getting for me on UA-cam
Not every contact creator needs to have every social media platform cross with each other
I use Instagram for personal content consumption… For the moment I am waiting in line somewhere or laying in bed ready to go to sleep
Are use UA-cam nonstop all day long… Whether I’m uploading or I’m watching other contact creators to just watch it like I watch TV shows
I kinda sorta remember this. I don't really watch van life or family vlogs so the people that I watched that did stories were just showing what they were playing at the time, reviewing next, or useless stuff like that. I don't remember when people could just post pictures with a short description but once that featured appeared the people I was subbed to wasn't used anymore.
Never heard of UA-cam stories until today. I wonder if that has to do with the fact that I've been web only for UA-cam since 2013.
There's a chance I did hear that they were *going* to do stories, but if I did I certainly hadn't heard anything about it since then.
I watch youtube for about 100 hours a month, and still never once clicked on the stories icon
I remember these actively getting phased out, you’d see them less and less
I usually subscribe to people after seeing them a few times. I sometimes search for them in my watch history because I don't remember names. There was a creator I liked watching in stories, but she disappeared from my feed, and I can't find her anymore. Btw it's the 3rd time I'm on this channel, so now I can subscribe.
Not to mention the stories overlap with the channel profile, forcing you to watch it whether you like it or not, just to access the channel via the profile pic. That way stories seemed intrusive more than not.
same with streams
@@sevencats4964 true. It's annoying.
I wish this happened to youtube short instead
i used youtube stories once and then proceeded to forget about it lmao
i completely forgot about that feature
Oooh, that feature. I was so confused what that was called.
omg i hated youtube stories soooo much. it's so redundant having a story feature on EVERY APP.
Let's not forget that stories weren't enabled for everyone. I only started seeing them pop-up in my feed a week before they were removed lol
I never opened a single story during all this Time 😆
As a viewer i always prefered shorts. Comunity posts fill the stories niche allready. The only youtuber i follow (i follow like 200) that uses stories is safya nygaard.
Obvi full videos stay the best but i found the dissapearing annoying.
I'm two months late to this videos and just found out that it's gone
Even Annoying Orange was using UA-cam Stories.
I've never been interested in the stories on any of the platforms so it won't be missed by me. It is interesting though when these companies come up with something new and just copy each other. I like the uniqueness of each platform and i hope they don't evolve into homogenous platforms. Thanks for your interesting commentary.
I think stories on youtube was a fine idea, but it should have been implemented with more freedom. Users should be easily able to choose whether they are looking at videos, livestreams, shorts, stories, or community posts with a simple checklist. And of course all users should be able to upload stories. I hate gatekeeping the ability to post any sort of content on social media sites in general, and i especially hate it on youtube. All sorts of features are locked off until a channel reaches arbitrary milestones.
I remember these
I didn't know they removed it
...i didn't even realize stories are gone
I genuinely had no idea that UA-cam Stories was a thing 😭 like this is the first I've heard of it 🥴
I didn't even know it left lol
My problem with stories is that, they are inaccessible on PC
oh, i remember theese
Its like a bad youtube shorts. Only thing I saw was people use it to point out there longer videos. Shorts that doesn't really happen as much
i thought u ment shorts. thats how little thougtht i put into stories on YT
Decent video, but I feel like the thumbnail was a little too aggressive and something you see on the tiny UA-camr talking about how the removal of dislikes was inherently caused by 9/11 for 1 hour
I forgot this was a thing
so if stories failed, why didn't shorts?
Because TikTok was popular at the time and because it was "more cleaner" without filters and texts and etc. Also Shorts was available for everybody
Wait, when did youtube have stories?, also at 3:11 I swear I heard authi-enticity instead of authenticity. Also Shorts are annoying on youtube because 90% it's just clips of youtube video's or tiktoks, so I'm happy to say that Shorts blockers are a thing
i thought he said shorts i was confused
I never understood that feature anywhere. Isn't the entire point of making the stuff the platforms are for making a story? Why did we need some lame feature that calls itself story when its actually more for those blue-ass water posts and whatever anybody ever did on snapchat.
Wow i never knew that yt stories was leaving-
UA-cam is for videos that stay. I think it just doesn`t work well for stories that disappear. Am I the only one who spends way too much time on UA-cam and had no idea stories exist?
I never click on stories or shorts on UA-cam.
But I like the summarized format of stories though. It's just not the type of thing I like watching most of the time.
I personally dont like stories cause of the interface. You couldnt pause them and read the comments individually. Maybe its a bug or i just have old version who knows?
Your videos views are so random lmao I love this place
Stories failed because UA-cam is not personal. You watch videos on here that are serious, they're not haphazardly created in seconds like Instagram. And that's what the userbase expects. Most people don't even subscribe to the people they watch, and if they do, there's no personal approval from the UA-camr. UA-cam is just business.
it failed imo as youtube isnt social media. at least it doesnt feel like it. there is also more anonymity
I forgot about those!! they were so dumb.
Wait... Sotries were still a thing in 2023??? I thought they stopped 2 years ago
Discontinued my ass they still bugg the hell out of me
Wait, isn't stories just what shorts are now?
Shorties
I didn’t even know this was a thing xd
Could u make a video on how the UA-cam message dms failed? Xd
yooo, I remember that absolute bullshit!!!!
i love how youre just a little guy in the corner
UA-cam Stories was a thing?
imo youtube should stop trying to be everything but youtube. i understand the fact that it has reached more or less a paek of users and it has to attract as many pople as possible in order to keep being proffitable, but it shouldnt try being youtube, snapchat, tiktok and a youtube kids at the same time
I think community posts are better NGL
I don't think I have ever once heard UA-cam stories called the "next big thing". That's a new one.
I found stories annoying and intrusive to the UA-cam experience. I’m glad they removed it lol
because its just youtube shorts
Because unless it is a front to sell porn, stories is pretty useless.
You share very interesting if not familiar topics that you really get to the point with and I like that a lot
LET HIM COOK
We need "youtube images" fr, also dont pin this
Lol
THE 10K SUBS SHIT IS SUCH BS... SUPPORT UR CREATORS LOL
I only signed up with a YT acct? so that I could comment on Shane Dawson's "Corny Vlog: Shooey" or something like that. He was doing a voice over for he & Lisa's dog Unicorn, Corny for short. It was like my mantra I used to watch it all the time & show it to anyone I would meet which sometimes would result in one or two of them repeating quotes from the video to me during future interactions. 💞🤸🦄 I would F those people too, if they were into that I mean. But then one day which turned into 6mos then yearly & now still 5-7 yrs later I haven't been able to find it at all.
Can you give me some hope or pointers?
And good riddance
