During my years as a motorcycle salesman, I had a veteran customer who had ridden the diesel KLR650. He said it was the slowest tractor of a bike he's ever ridden, but was absolutely unstoppable.

I know that most of the multifuel engines used in US military equipment were very limited as to the amount of time they would run on gasoline, for the deuce and half it was something like 50 miles. Any time you are trying to get multifuel capability from an engine compromises must be made. A diesel engine running on jet fuel requires a lubrication additive to the fuel or you severely limit the life of the parts of the injection system that require that lubrication. Military mechanics that worked on Humvees told me they were only good for a couple thousand miles before failure when running on JP-8.

LDTs will run pretty happily on commercial or avgas if you mix in a few quarts of motor oil to lubricate the injection pump 👍

Diesel fuel, jet fuel, and kerosene are all essentially the same fuel. The difference is the additives.
What is impressive is when a diesel can run on gasoline. This fuel has NO lubricating properties at all, and if the diesel injection pump can handle it with a bit of oil added, this is a fantastic development.
-I've been told that diesels in Russia can run on alcohol mixed with motor oil; Here in south Florida all the city busses and the garbage trucks are diesels that run on compressed natural gas. Since the tank provides the pressure, there is no diesel injection pump to be lubricated so this works just fine and it is significantly cheaper to use CNG.
    Great video!

  • @bobroberts2371

To expand on the international start on gasoline / run on diesel. These are 3 valve per cylinder. The third valve opens up a secondary combustion chamber that contains the spark plug and is where gasoline enters the cylinder. Once the engine is warmed up, this valve stays shut and the diesel injection pump takes over.
Batteries and starters were not very good up until the 70's so large diesels needed this type of system or a small gasoline engine to act as a starter motor.

Lister have been making simple long-lived diesel engines since 1929. UA-cam has articles showing that, once you have the Lister engine idling with a bare minimum of diesel fuel, you can add other fuels such as butane/propane into the air feed to increase output power.

You can't go last on the carby engine. As any gasoline engine that only runs on a magneto coil and a pull start is gonna only use a carburetor. No fancy injectors and sensors can be found on hand held grass trimmers or chainsaws as no one wants to lug a unit around with pressure pumps and a battery. As for OHV, you can't find any last OHV as its still being used on the same products that use carburetor lawn mowers. The very mechanical simplicity and better efficiency compared to a flathead makes OHV a common valve layout found on any small engine. Even the marine engines opted to use OHV as those engines are not likely gonna scream to any greater than 1000rpm. OHC can only be beneficial if you run past 3k rpm and you now need have a valve layout that is reciprocatingly light and responsive.
OHV tends to be best suited for constant power applications without hell screaming rpm. And no chain or belt slack to worry about.

-One little secret that no auto manufacturer has exploited so far is that you CAN indeed use a spark plug to ignite a diesel power stroke. The reason this is not done is simplicity, but also, the plug will foul quickly. Try it, I did: I ran my lawnmower with a mixture of 75% diesel and 25% gasoline one day just to see what would happen, and while it was down on power, it got the job done with little fuss and ran fine afterwards after I drained the tank. The plug was FOULED though. There is the problem: The spark plug will foul, but the solution is an extremely powerful ignition system that can literally blow this fouling off. It can and has been done, but the cost is prohibitive and with a diesel you don't need the spark anyway, so that is why you don't see it.
