What's even more bizzare is that the Brazil - Chile game was indirectly involved in a plane crash. Varig Flight 254 was scheduled to fly São Paulo to Belém on the same day, but after the final stopover in Marabá the flight was suddenly flying in a different direction (it was later revealed that wrong heading inputs were set). The pilots tried to use frequencies of commercial radio stations which were broadcasting the match with the hope the signal will lead them to Belém. It didn't and the plane crashed in the Amazon jungle after running out of fuel.

Yeah I remember watching an Air Crash Investigation (Mayday) about that. The press said that the pilots were distracted listening to the match which was fake news

Mexico's ban was really unfair. Nigeria (my country) comitted the same offence at around the same time and at a global youth tournament even, and we only had our youth squads banned for 2 years. (tho to be fair, our problem arose from discrepancies in youth player's ages on offical documents...and I guess FIFA may have decided to give us the benefit of the doubt even in punishing us that it was all down to 'clerical errors' , plus we were punished by FIFA directly from the word go not by our local confederaiton CAF, unlike Mexico who were punished by CONCACAF and then got their punishment 'upgraded' by FIFA). Meanwhile, our senior squad was not banned, and even took part in(african) qualifiers for Italia 90 (we didn't make it, sadly).

None of those bans are "fair" Usa have attacked over 5 country's in the past years and never got banned. UK Germany and France bombard country's and nothing is happening. In saudi arabia and Quatar people are getting there heads cut off and they are not only able to play but also own clubs. The latest even host a worldcup.

For all people writing here that US should be suspended because of invasion of Iraq, to be consequent, you'd have to ban around 40 countries, because of any involvment to it from France, through South Korea, to Tonga.
FIFA rarely ban and, as you can see, if it does, it is for sporting reasons, not political reasons. If it were not, North Korea would not be a FIFA member at all.
Ban for Russia is sensational and as Alfie said, they just had to bow to public opinion.

What makes the situation with Roberto Rojas even more bizarre is that at time he played in Brazil in São Paulo, and was a teammate of some of Brazil's players; perhaps even more amazingly, after his lifetime ban was lifted by Fifa, he was hired by São Paulo as goalkeeping coach, and actually had a successful run as caretaker manager in 2003, with the team finishing 3rd in the Brazilian league.

You are missing Yugoslavia on this list. They were banned for competing in the World Cup in 1994.
Actually they were banned for competing from 1992 to 1995, they were banned for competing in the UEFA Euro 1992 ONLY 13 DAYS BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT STARTED. Denmark took our place on that tournament because they were on the second place in our qualifying group, we beat them 2-1 in Copenhagen (although we lost 2-1 in Belgrade).
Although Yugoslavia fell apart at that time and there were three wars in the last one year, there were still some players from the countries that already gained independence or were in a war against Yugoslavia (from Slovenia: Zahovic, Novak, Katanec; from Bosnia & Herzegovina: Bazdarevic, Susic, Hadzibegic; from (North) Macedonia: Pancev, Najdoski, Stanojkovic, Kanatlarovski), except for the Croatian players (Suker, Jarni, Boban, Prosinecki), and everyone else was from Serbia and Montenegro (which were officially one country at that time, until 2006, first it was called SR Yugoslavia, later just Serbia & Montenegro), such as: Mijatovic, Jokanovic, Brnovic, Dragan Stojkovic, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Savicevic, Jugovic... it was still a hell of a team.
They were actually there, in Sweden, practicing for the start of the tournament, and I even still have the tickets for the group matches with SFR Yugoslavia on it instead of Denmark, but unfortunately the decision was made: "The national team of SFR Yugoslavia and the teams from Yugoslavia will be banned from participating in any FIFA and UEFA competitions for the time being due to the invasion of Bosnia and Herzegovina." Basically it was the same situation as Russia today.
I will die in a belief that Yugoslavia would have become European Champions then if we weren't banned.
To be more precise, if the war in Bosnia never started, which is sad that it started there because it was the most beautiful country to live in among all countries in ex-Yugoslavia. The best people in the world were living there.
It's so sad what politics makes of all the people.
Nowadays, I live in (North)Macedonia, where I am living my entire life. :)
Sorry for this off topic writing, I carried away a little bit.

Yugoslavia ban to play in UEFA Euro 1992 was interesting case, they won qualif. group ahead of Denmark (so they would not even qualify), and after they banned them Denmark replaced them and actually won Euro 1992. Breakup of Yugoslavia hit at the worst possible time since they were top football power at the time, Yugo young squad won U20 World Cup 1987, lost in WC 1990 in quaterfinals to Maradona's Argentina on penalties, Red Star won European Cup in 1991 and they had a team that had potential to win even World Cup in 1994 (Croatia for example with just part of those golden generation players won 3rd place in WC 1998).

FIFA wouldn’t have banned Russia if the country didn’t receive the global response they did after the invasion, knowing FIFA they would have swept it under the rug, they only banned Russia due to pressure from many other countries

I'm sure that HITC Sevens did more research on this than I did, but technically I think they would be eligible for this list. The World Cup qualifying draw occurred before the sanctions on Yugoslavia that banned them from sporting competitions. They were drawn into Group 5 with Greece, Russia (listed at the time of the draw as the Soviet Union), Iceland, Hungary, and Luxembourg. FIFA's suspension of Yugoslavia occurred in October 1992 after a couple matches in that group had been played. Based on the spread out schedule I'm not positive if Yugoslavia had played a qualifying match before the suspension, though I would guess they hadn't because of the UN sanctions.

Basically, for political expediency, it's like banning Russia from competing because of what it has done (obviously understandable), but we didn't ban the US from competing after invading, bombing, and causing civil wars in multiple countries because it's in the name of the freedom. FIFA has always been an economic stakeholder, if it acted ethically almost half of the FIFA countries should have been suspended at some point in the last century, but its hypocrisy has always been a hallmark, the World Cup in winter ends almost a century of tradition of having the world cup in the summer is the latest bullshit not to say allow in the past fascist states winning and cheating finals like Italy in 34 or 38 and Argentina in 78 but obviously in this world if you go with ethics the rest buries you because you are a danger for their interests

FIFA's corruption apart, their ban on the caxirola was not only justified but also celebrated. Following the popularity that the vuvuzela gained in 2010, the Brazilian government sought to create an official instrument for the 2014 World Cup and came up with the caxirola. However, unlike the vuvuzela, which existed long before 2010 and was already a tradition among South African supporters, the caxirola was universaly rejected by Brazilian supporters, who felt that it was artificialy imposed upon them. This negative attitude would be shown in a match between Bahia and Vitoria, the first derby to be held in the new Fonte Nova Arena, created for the Word Cup, and first match where the caxirolas were massively distributed, when supporters on both sides threw these instruments at the pitch by the hundreds. This incident represented the failure of the new instrument and motivated FIFA to ban it altogether.
