To Izzy - thank you for your service as a LEO from a retired LEO in 2006 after almost 30 years. To MJ thank you for being supportive of his career. Recently got a new Sonic Lite TT for the wife and I along with our 3 furkids. I have hitch pin locks, hitch locks and steel cables around the battery and propane tank when traveling. Same when parked at home minus the propane tank that is secured in backyard. We have 3 surveillance cameras covering the TT parked in our driveway. Our furkids are also great alarms as we live on a cul-de-sac. Some of my friends think that I have overdone the "security measures" but I don't think at times it is enough. I check the TT almost every day to be sure no entry and/or storage bays have been tampered with. This was a substantial investment and our enjoyment at campgrounds with many more to travel to. I got to do me on security of our enjoyment. Take care and be safe.
Several years ago I found a device that cut off the fuel pump once when put in gear. There's a push button keypad to turn it off and on. Their ad said that it will allow the vehicle to roll a few feet before it dies. If someone busts out a window, but can't start it, it's considered vandalism. If it is moved, it's a theft recovery. That can change the deductible.
We had a 30' travel trailer stolen in August. Our new unit has a Proven Industries coupler lock, a Trimax wheel boot (which covers the wheel lugs), cable through 2 other wheels, a hidden cut off switch on the electric tongue jack and a hidden, hardwired GPS tracker. All of these things combined were well over $1000 but that is a fraction of what we lost in August. And we don't have a Glock..we carry Sig P350s!!
I prefer my Sig as well. Sorry you lost your TT, happened to friends also (it was in a storage lot), We have several preventers on our TT , and are blessed to park at home.
Some great tips. I like the secret switch to cut off the key start and the GSM tracker. Preferably store it indoors and alarm the building plus a camera so you can view who’s driving the RV. I had the same problem with my new Range Rover and the thief was in his car using a computer to disable my security. Unbeknown to him I was watching everything through my bedroom window and I filmed it. When he went to open the driver’s door I yelled at him and shouted what are you doing with my car? His answer was he was collecting his father’s car (at 4am!) I told him that the police were on their way and he jumped in his car and drove off. I had enough on my camera and his finger prints on my door to have him arrested. Thankfully I’m a light sleeper and so is my dog. Busted. We need to catch as many of these people as humanly possible. It’s the biggest deterrent we have. Great topic ♥️👮🏻♀️👮♂️
Really enjoyed this video. We live in a gated Community that has a separate gated and lit area for RVs but that has not kept thieves from stealing gas and catalytic converters. Somehow our previous Class A dodged the bullet and when we bought our Jayco Class C the first thing we did was put a Catcage on, knowing that it is not fool proof. Our hope is when the thief gets under there they go away with thoughts they can get 10 in the time it might take them to get ours off…..so far so good. I do like the fact that yours has an alarm.
Cameras that Alert, such as Ring, and not just record. Also, we always use a steering lock on our truck. Anything can be defeated as you said, but make it harder for the bad guys. It’s scary that they are use laptops now to steal newer model vehicles especially those with push start. Stay Safe.
Lol as a retired LEO, the wife says you are retired because you are always. Traveling, but after watching and your commenting of 23 yrs I told her he still working
Excellent video! I’ll be adding the GPS tracker - great idea! When our coach is in storage it’s in a secure facility. It’s covered storage but not fully enclosed. It has a 14’ high solid steel gate to enter the facility and is on property that is owned by the family that built and runs the facility. The family are hunters and someone is always there. No one has had any issues at this facility not because it is secure, or they’re hunters - the facility is right next to the headquarters for the local police department and several of the officers and leaders store their rigs in this facility. My coach is a diesel so the catalytic convertor isn’t an issue for us.
I liked the alarm feature of the CatStrap(sp?) especially if it trips at the onset of motion. I didn't worry much about our coaches being stolen as we live in a rural area with neighbors around us that are close enough to see and hear when something isn't right at a neighbor's home. We've never had a crime other than window salesmen and Jehovah Witnesses with the gall of taking the 300' walk in from the road to knock on our door. One thing I always did with the coaches was use the deadbolt lock. So locking both the handle lock and the deadbolt. While RV handle locks have a limited number of key patterns/cuts (so sales staff won't have to go nuts) my understanding has been that the deadbolt lock/key are much more individualized. Our last coach was a diesel pusher and I figured unlikely to be stolen by the average car thief as they wouldn't have references for glow plug wait time, airing up the brakes and suspension systems, as well as being unlikely they would know where the master power switches are or even how to activate them. So I didn't worry about that one being stolen. The gas coach prior to the diesel pusher, again deadbolt, and I'd shut down the master power switches, again trusting that thieves wouldn't know where to find or how to operate them. We have the additional benefit in that our driveway meets our little country road on an angle and it's difficult to back into the road. So the sight of trying to get the coach off of our property is also a deterrent. If I had to take things a step further, I'd have set up an alarm directly to the "house" battery bank, so the alarm would have power all the time regardless to the setting of the master power switches. And using the "house" bank because it had four batteries as opposed to the "truck" bank having only two.
I didn't know you were a brother LEO. Anyway, I co-own a Class C, PI and security company. Access Control and Locksmith is two of our services. One thing I recommend is to replace the cheap stock lock on your external panels with Asia brand locks. You can get them all with a single key. Make sure every responsible person in the family has a copy. These and Medico are both a pain in my rear to pick and I'm a professional. This will prevent common key access, ie every manufacturer uses the same lock and the same key. Other then that, the Deadman kill switch and the GPS. I prefer the removable Deadman. They might find the kill switch and turn it on, good luck finding the Deadman that's in your pocket or on your nightstand.
Cat converter stolen right out of our driveway. 3800 to tow and replace. Never thought the neighborhood we were in this would happen. It sat for 5 years in an open storage lot, no problems. We got a cage welded around it now. We figured we were just the opportunity. Not a bad neighborhood. Same time when we called for the police to come out for a report. They told the city had just got hit with the service vehicles. Bad thing, we live on the corner of a very busy rd. And there is a pullout spot. With all of the easements, we can't put up a fence. . My wife went and got barbwire fencing. We put it all over until we got the cage.
What some people also do is they push their seat into the forward position as close to the steering wheel as possible and they put a lock through the frame of the seat to the seat cannot go back unless you’re a super skinny person you’re not gonna be driving that down the road
We used to have a GPS and wireless device in our trucks that you could text it and it would text you back the GPS but you could also text it a code and it would shutdown the truck, it was connected to a relay and disconnected the fuel pump power. Now I am very complacent my neighbors use horse and buggy and any vehicle is very visible on the road. I still lock up my vehicles, not so much for theft but I am always concerned a child could get stuck in a vehicle and that can be life threatening. The toggle switch on the fuel pimp is a great way to deter theft. They could find the switch but only if they know to look for it. Stay safe and healthy?
I have told you before but I am a civilian police volunteer and the number one thing when vehicles are stolen is what you pointed out i the begging, doors unlocked.
Towables are more common around here and they have had a few thefts. Most are hauling trailers, but a few have been camping types. One was a trailer of a non profit outreach. We have a hitch lock we bought when we heard about them. The little hitch lever too- didn't think about locking when not using. Will be doing that too. We don't have 2 sets of wheels so our X wheel lock we got for a previous trailer won't work. We do often park in from of it too. WE live in a court and have security cameras. Most are mounted way too high for someone to remove and have great resolution day and night. Also motion sensor lights. BUT when camping is the most concern- so anything like a hitch lock, a boot, etc is going to discourage the opportunistic thief. Vulcan chains for ebikes too- people seem to troll for those. We haven't gotten around to securing the propane or batteries but that will be coming soon.
i use to leave the keys in my cup holder all the time and rarely locked up the house! We live in a safe area but i lock the cars and truck now but only seem to lock the house at night, not sure why. my trailer is on the side drive and always locked with a hitch lock as well.
Hey guys not to negate security and the fact that simple steps could prevent all kinds of theft one of my RV travel partners was a retired sheriff and he had locks forverything. We keep ours locked behind our house that has a locked 6 foot high privacy fence and cameras on all sides of the house. Our driveway we put in is limestone gravel with sod over it. If someone were to try to drive it away from the house firstly it’s basically 8 ft wide and our gates are 11 ft wide and they better make sure they don’t get caught in the swale. They’d be stuck in the mud, ask me how I know……..lol😂
One of the guys I used to work with had an old Chevy van that was higher up than usual. He went to pick up lunch and they rolled under and had his catalytic converter was gone when he came back out. Less than 5 minutes.
