This is How I Go PLASTIC FREE Grocery Shopping on my Bike

- I've been riding my bike to get groceries for years (it's easier than you think, and FUN) and now I'm doing it PLASTIC FREE! The evils of single use plastic are well documented. It's toxic, it's filling up our oceans and landfills, it's poisoning our water systems, and it's increasing our dependency on oil (just to name a few). In this video I visit Nude Foods in Boulder, a true ZERO WASTE grocer. Check them out at nudefoodsmarke...

Love your point about how biking to get groceries encourages us not to overbuy. I tend to buy more fresh, more local when I bike shop. Bonus: Nude Foods delivers for busy families and students who may not always have time to shop.
As you noted, with even just two panniers and a bungee cord or two I often can get sooooo much groceries, and bike home with 100s of pounds of food. It's heavy, but not that hard, the bike is doing most of the work. And now with ebikes, boom! You could put it all in a cart behind the bike if we wanted.
But main thing you nail: it's more fun, when we open our hearts to caring about our planet, one another, whales, bears, fish, birds. Caring is more fun!
And when we work to save the planet we all depend on, some magic happens. Community is healthy, helps our resilience in times of stress or if we're having a hard time. Biking is healthy. Much of the food is actually cheaper, and healthier. And when we vote with our dollars-care about local jobs, independent moms n pops, instead of paying our hard-earned bucks to the Man (Bezos, often), we can all be better off, keep money in our communities.
Love your big heart brother- ~ Waylon
I'm gonna pin this comment up top, it's so good! Thanks for sharing all your wisdom and humor with my audience. Love you, brother!
@@duzer Love you man! It's fun to care and you inspire all of us so much. Makes me so sad when I see the bears going through my neighbors' trash, let's make our world less sad! And support local mom n pop shops, not Amazon/Whole Foods.
awesome store and video ... we got one too but it is not organic unfortunately... 😖
oh please don't get an EBIKE just because ur groceries might be too heavy ... just bike a bit slower for a while and soon u will build that extra stamina to get u over that hill with ur extra weight...
even I figured out how to shop for three with a normal bike. I didn't even have any bike bags. I simply stacked three midsized cardboard boxes on top of each other and secured them with two bungees ... the boxes are from the store and made to hold 20+ pounds of apples ... the store would have tossed them too...
remember plastic is bad but the production of batteries is even worse ... ok ok UNLESS u dump ur car 🤣👍
Oh come on, you just get bigger panniers lol.
@@EckmanJones hell yeah, I literally just biked home with a verrrry heavy pannier loaded up with groceries! Missed my other one, but you can get so much stuff in even one..!
Wow. That store is over the top. The world needs to have a million more of them to shop at.
I agree!!
there's more and more around the US and Canada and Europe, hopefully everywhere..!
@@elephantjournalSomewhere it was in Soviet Union
It'd be nice to have such a place closer to me
Do any of you have a store like this near you? I'd love to know. Also, if you wanna learn more about Nude Foods, go to www.nudefoodsmarket.com and you should totally follow my friend Waylon, he posts a lot of great content about saving the planet. You can find him on IG at instagram.com/waylonlewis
Bike commuting for groceries is awesome, been doing it for years. It tends to make me shop smarter and not buy as much. I become a lot more aware of what I am buying and plan out my food a lot better than when I buy.
Also, kudos to the women for admitting that there are times when we need plastic. It is something that is needed in the medical field. The rest of us can work to reduce our plastic usage as much as we can.
Grocery biking is the best!
Wow this is SO COOL! When you first mentioned a zero-waste grocery store, I was picturing some expensive bougie place filled with scented candles and quirky ingredients. But the fact that they have all the essentials AND it's cheaper than the big chains makes me super jealous.
Side note, do you have any recommendations for a brand of bungee cords? Trying to find a good set for my bike rack that will last a long time and won't fray easily.
This is great, you are lucky to have store like this in Boulder. I live in the Netherlands, and we are just starting with zero waste shopping. But grocery shopping on a bike is the standard here, on average, I think 60% of grocery shopping is done with a bicycle, and in Amsterdam, it is probable over 85%. I appreciate that you speak out more about your ideas of how to live a responsible life, and that you always look at the positive things that we as individuals can do. Thanks for the inspiration.
Wish the UK was pro cycling, we are hated here by most Motorists 🙄
So damn good!
Did my first biking grocery shop yesterday - now searching for a bulk foods option locally. They’re few and far between here but I’m going to try ☺️
PS my beautiful grandma was born on Jan 21st 💛
I don't drink anything other than water, and I take my own container with me everywhere I go. Plus I like produce stores that don't put everything in plastic containers and plastic bags. Pretty easy to change your ways if you care enough to do it. Thanks for bringing this to peoples attention, sometimes we just get caught up in life and forget that earth is for everyone.💗
Thank you for caring about our precious planet! YOU ROCK!!
@@JosephSneep I know, I wonder what is wrong with people who are still buying cases of bottled water. I know it is unavoidable sometimes when you are out in the middle of nowhere with no tap water available.

Thanks for the exposure Ryan! This makes me have hope for the world.
Me too! They're amazing!
Wonderful episode, Ryan! I Wish Nude Foods was in my neighborhood. Or maybe I need to move to Boulder...
I hope more of these places pop up around the world!
Thanks Ryan for highlighting our over use of plastics and showing us with an alternative. Wish we had a plastic free bulk store near us here in the east. Will have to research options in our neck of the woods. . On another unrelated note, I recently purchased an L Train from Priority! A really great bike. Cheers.
Cool!! You’ll love that bike!! Happy trails
When I cycled everywhere in SoCal between 97 and 2006. I had panniers on my bike. I would go grocery shopping and fill the saddle bags. I would also carry a backpack for any extras. I would bike to the market and back, which was about 3.5 miles total. I lived up on a hill with a 400 meter climb. It was always an experience climbing that street on a bike with groceries.
Thank you for the video. It brought back good memories. You have fully inspired me to get back in the saddle. Your videos made me realize how much I miss biking everywhere. Again, Thank you
I wish you all the best on your journey to ride more. It's so fun, as you know!
You said Doo Doo lol! Cool, never heard of the no waste grocery store. That needs to be more prominent for sure. Man, I truly wish there was a NudeFoods near me, this was a very informative video Ryan, well done man.
doo doo :) Thanks for watching this!
Fantastic! I would love it if my local co-op adopted the glass jar model. I am going to ask them about it. Thanks so much for the great info and ideas.
I hope that they have something like this!
Brava to NudeFoods founders; you've got me thinking how to change up my habits for less plastic.
I’ve been car-free in central Denver for over 3 years. My bike broke 2 years ago & had been exclusively on foot since, with a little transit for long jaunts. It’s not easy to buy & consume primarily fresh produce without a car, but it can be done. Ironically, I found it easier to buy groceries when I’m on foot than on bike because I can buy more as I can carry two bags by hand with my backpack full-that’s when transit helps!
Very cool!! Keep it up, my friend
I don’t know how I missed this video. I love that you’re using a store that has reusable packaging. I’ve been reducing my plastic waste for several years now and I’m amazed how easy most of it is.
Thanks Ryan for making us aware of this wonderful store. We need to totally stop our addiction to plastic. 0ver 60% of all clothing in the world is now made of plastic. Even your blue jeans and wool socks have plastic thread in them. Thousands of years from now there will be a layer of plastic demarcating this time in the earth's history. Good to see a store that really cares about the future generations and the mess we are leaving them. One day I went to the neighborhood store to buy one item, I came out with five plastic bags full of groceries and could not find my car., before realizing I rode my bike. It is a learning moment.
Hi Ryan,
Living in Southern California, We haven't gone plastic-free yet, but working to iliminate use much more and adapting our lifestyle in a lot of ways to support a healthier earth.
Wow! Boulder has beautiful biking trails. Much inspired. Thanks!😉❤🧡💛💚💙💜
SoCal should be a leader in this, hopefully soon
Ryan, another great video, I will share this video with my friends and family....thanks
I only have 1 word for this video.
AWESOME 👍
I have a one word reply…THANKS!!!
Fantastic! I’ve been reducing my waste but it’s very hard to do where I live. I will keep adding plastic free items each month. I have a garden, go to farmer’s markets, and compost food waste. Great store!
That’s great! Every little bit helps
The Planet is thanking you my friend! You Rock Duzer! Oh and great prices. I'm IN..
Love it. Definitely got me thinking I’m guessing is part of your intent. I’ve become a big label reader as I get older. Seems like that would be tough to do at this amazing place.
the ingredients are generally simple and 100% on the top of every label! You'd love it I think.
Every jar has a QR code which takes you to tons of details about the product.
Got this on Patreon & went ho hum grocery shopping. Almost didn’t watch but I did, and I loved it! What a great place NudeFoods is & with very necessary purpose. Good for them & for you Ryan for presenting them. Wish they were in LA!
haha, I get it. It's not a sexy adventure video...but there's nothing sexier than saving the planet! And thanks for your support on Patreon!!
OMG, I just found a similar store in my home town. I ride past it every time I bike home. I never even thought of this. I thank you for opening my eyes a little!
That’s so cool!!
You Go Ryan, you da Man! you're an inspiration. You inspire me...🚴♀ I just put my BOB back into the lineup!! I have a repurposed Rail Trail through my neck of the woods (Rockingham Rail Trail'NH) which makes my shopping experience a lot more safe and FUN!! Keep up the good work my Man
We (my wife and I) cycled Boston to the Pacific last year. It was great, BUT, the amount of plastic EVERYWHERE was discouraging. Since then, trying to make a meaningful dent in my own plastic consumption is very hard. Great video, keep up the great education.
It's such a sad reality...and so hard to avoid :(
Wow, what a great store. I wish I had one near me. Thanks for making this video. I had no idea that plastics weren't recyclable.
This could be the next generation of whole foods. Would they consider expanding to other cities??
They've got a winning combination of convenience and zero waste. Thank you for spotlighting this.
They are very new, but I think that they’re planning on bringing this idea to other cities (in colorado, for now).
We are indeed planning to come to other cities. We're working on perfecting the business model at this store first then expanding with a delivery first model until there's enough pull in a particular location to open a store.
@@veritynoble6398 Is there an e-mail list where we can keep up with your shop and where it will open up? I want to keep up with your business.
This is a rad concept. Hope this concept grows
I hope so too!
Hey Ryan, Thanks for the heads up for Nude Foods Market. I live in Loveland and this would be a nice trip to visit Boulder and get my groceries and a cup of coffee at my favorite coffee shop.
Great spotlight of next level market. Thank you!

Hey Ryan, Good subject matter. Everyone should take a look at mycelium packaging (comes from mushrooms). We really need these alternatives. Thanks Nude Foods for showing the way.
My grand parents used to get Charslton chips in a tin can and they were so good! It cool to see the old school coming full circle!

WOW.. Great Store.. What a Eye Opener.. Very Informative.. Thank You.. 🚴😃
Thanks, Billy!
Love you, Ryan. Thanks for this. I have a great grocer less than one mile away that stocks tons of local food and am building up my 'round the town bike to go rain or shine with fenders, racks, bags and such. Looking into eco friendly produce bags, because I cook a LOT of veg. Also the meat ( for those of us who still eat it ) is packed at the butcher counter in paper that is not healthy. That brown paper is lined in stuff that causes cancer!! I am a breast cancer survivor, and I know I can't avoid "all the things" anymore. But I do take it quite seriously. The journey continues. Just get out there folks. Thanks again, Ryan!!
The journey continues, well said! We can all try a little harder...and congrats on being a survivor!
I love the idea of my pantry being full of glass jars instead of cardboard or plastic. Less bugs. More visually appealing. Also, not having to wash the jars would be pleasant.
Yeah, my pantry is super colorful!
Exactly! It's easy. And pretty! My pantry looks pro with Nude Foods.
Awesome store!!
On another note; I have a B.O.B. trailer that I bought for bikepacking/camping trips. You just reminded me that I could (maybe even should) use it more for small grocery trips. 👍🤙
Yes! The BOB is a great grocery shopping trailer
Hi Ryan. It's amazing that you're doing!!!
awesome!! stoked to check this place out. Would love to see your tips for winter riding, trying to do as much biking as I can but I haven't cracked that nut yet.
I did make a winter bike commuting gear video, it's on my channel
Another great video Ryan.what an amazing store, hope this idea takes off world wide.
Me too!
Talking about clothes, thrift shopping is an AMAZING option!! Specialty made minimal waste clothes can be pricy, but thrifting is completely recycling, you can find awesome stuff, and can be/almost always is more affordable than buying new!
Not in our local thrift shops unless they have a sale. Over the past few years they have moved to do comparable pricing to retail. So I don't shop in them anymore. Instead I recycle my own clothes in the same way previous generations did.
@@amandajane8227 Yeah that’s why I phrased it the way I did, that it can be/almost always is since areas vary. Even if it’s not cheaper it’s still the more eco-friendly option compared to new~
Very good point! Thrifting is great!
Ryan! so glad I found your channel. Saw your Burning man Ultra. So much fun! Single use plastic is up there on my list. Great story on this unique store, need to get to the point were is is no longer unique but mainstream. I've considered shopping on my bike. The biggest concern I have is my bike being there when I come out of the store. Maybe pickup a beater on Craigslist just for shopping. Dense Urban area have a high crime rate.
Welcome to my channel! And yes, sometimes a cheap bike is best for city errands. Happy trails
First time I have been introduced to this Amazing Store! I Love This Idea 💡 Brother 😎. I worked retail for 20ish yrs and the store recycled Cardboard! Big Box Store. Hope Tucson Arizona Desert 🏜️ Gets this Store Soon. ✌️❤️🙏
It’s really cool!! Hope more businesses do this
This is my favorite video yet Ryan, thank you so much!
Great to hear it!! Thanks for watching
Thank you for this! And hey, I know people that practice zero waste shopping without a zero waste store. They buy all unpackaged fresh produce and shop at places that have dry bulk foods. Most use paper bags for the bulk foods
That's very cool!! It can be done
I wish we had a bulk store like that closer! Very cool.
I never thought I'd say this but, wow that grocery store is so cool!!
haha, so true! but it is indeed cool!
Wow Ryan mi amigo, Thanks for the video. I am a plastic hater but is so difficult to get to zero waste. I will check if I have a store like this one close to home. Love it and keep up the good work!
It's so hard to go zero waste, but we can try!
Love that you’re addressing this again. I would miss going to Costco.
Costco is great in some ways--bulk can be eco--but they plastic-package even fruit, which makes me sad :)
too many people at costco.
This is FANTASTIC! I love the concept! Thanks for opening our eyes to possibilities!
Watching from France. If only the world was like Boulder. Great video, great idea,
France is MUCH BETTER than the USA with reusing and minimizing waste, I envy your country
@@duzer How about forming a Duzeristan country !? The anthem would be "Olé olé olé", the food speciality would be frijoles, ....and drones would never, ever get lost
My bicycle grocery shopping Pro tip is the fact that ortlieb panniers can actually clip on to the side of the most grocery carts. I fill the panniers as I shop that way I know it all fits. Then at the register everything gets scanned and goes right back into the panniers, no grocery bags needed.
Oh that’s a great idea!!! Thanks
I primarily commute to the grocery store by bicycle; honestly, e-bicycle because it's hilly where I live. I wish that we had an amazing grocery store like Nude Foods here in Bethlehem.
Ebikes are great!
Good stuff, thanks for giving me something to really think about!

I love grocery biking! I have bags and a trailer and do a huge load. I have front and back racks and a Burly Coho trailer. I’m right next to you in Denver and I went actively car free many years ago
Shopping by bike is fun and so convenient. I can use a shopping bag bungeed on the rack or panniers or even a trailer. At times I just walk since I live in city and areas are still laid out like all inclusive villages around 50% don't own any cars. There's a choice of many buses (peak times every 6 minutes), trains, underground, car share, bike share, taxis, walking and riding. Around the corner has many shops including one similar to your Nude shop. Ours is too expensive to shop in regularly at the moment. Most walk to the shops because it's too much of a hassle to be driving around finding the limited parking places. That takes up more time than the 5-10 minute walk to get there. I found that out when they did a local survey.
I use the bike when I want a ride or want to shop further away or I'm passing by on my work commute. I also use it when I want to carry a lot. It's great to take stuff to the reuse/recycling centre too.
Cool! Happy belated birthday! Hope it was great.
It was! Thanks
lol the one handed drone flying
It’s my best stupid human trick 😂
Thank you for this video. It’s really inspiring to here you and Waylon talk!
Also it’s really interesting to learn about the differences between 🇺🇸 and 🇸🇪. In all Swedish cities there are small recycling stations in abundance. There everyone can deposit plastics, carton, metall products, glass etc etc. it’s really easy available. In Sweden we don’t have any land fills and everyone goes to their city recycling stations. There you can deposit bigger things like sofas, bigger things of metall, old freezers, cell phones etc. If you have any nice things you don’t need anymore you can put them in a special house for the Red Cross to sell in their shop. Also there is an extra fee when you buy certain containers of plastic and aluminum (such as Coke cans etc). You got your money back when you recycle the container.
Where I live, riding you’re bike to work/school and the grocery store is a normal everyday thing. Although many people are really relying on their cars.
It would be really interesting to learn about you’re situation in the US compared to this. What are you’re options when it comes to recycling in your everyday life?
It would be so interesting to see a video about this!

This was a wonderful video. Wish all city had this type of store. I am changing my life style I am trying to bike to my every day errands. Targets only one mile from my house “why do I drive?” The groceries store is presenting a bit more of a challenge, I will have to ride the stroud at one of the intersections that merges on the by pass. Though I am a confident rider my special needs son loves to go to the grocery stores with me. So I have not yet figured out how to take him with me. He also has therapy once a week that I would love him to ride a bike there(along side of me) but at this point I have not figured out a safe way to get there.
WOW! We need more stores like Naked stores, Whole Foods need to learn and we as consumers need to HATE plastic
We sure do!! Down with plastic!!
Such an awesome video. Love this. Gotta see if we have something similar in good ol El Paso
I learned when we lived in England for a year, that a daily shop was necessary because my fridge was so small. So I would walk 10
Minutes to the store and carry the bags home. And I'm starting to do that again since we live about 15 min walk from the store.
Nice to see that someone can avoid plastic.
Here in my city 10% heat with soft coal, 5% heat with hard coal, 40% heat with burner oil, I heat with electric baseboard (getting a heat pump on the 28th) 30% heat with electric basebord and the remainder use Scotian Shelf natural gas. Our power comes from about 30 hydro dams and 1 50 year old CANDU Nuclear reactor on a medium level active fault line.
Locally we have a refinery (North Americas largest and newest 2012) that ships one to two tankers of nylon resin to be dumped in the UN approved ocean disposal site off Somalia, (cause of the pirates). Saudi crude leaves nylon where as Alberta Crude has tar as the reminant part. Tar gets used up in construction! Because of the left over unsellible nylon that gets dumped at sea, I am on the fence on using plastic vs ocean dumping nylon resin mixed with unsellable solvents. No question neither is good just which is worse, and which is better!
So many factors to everything.

PS. CO² is likely going to be backburnered by the mass wasting of the arctic permafrost that is melting from our stupid developments above the 60th parallel and not so much our fossil fuel use. The mass wasting releases huge amounts of methane CH⁴ gas. Methane does not absorbe into our oceans, also vegitation does not ingest methane so it can exist for hundreds of years and according to PBS NOVA each molcule is 43 times the greenhouse effect of CO² (Environment Canada says methane is 9X CO²). Eather way both are really bad! We need to stop all northern developments, all arctic ice breaking (except for local harbor clearing) all construction way up there, frankly we need to remove every non aborigional person who lives up there to keep the heat reflective white snowy ground cover everywhere even on the oceans! If we fail we all lose!
