Lol - I just finished swapping out the turbo on ours. It took me a full weekend (way more that 10hrs on my driveway with no compressor!) but I did NOT drop the motor or even the exhaust. You absolutely can remove the exh manifold and access it that way BUT it is a complete pain in the hands, wrists, forearms and back!! All those stupid heatshields, that nasty bolt under the turbo and the bottom 3rd manifold bolt in from the passenger side (Australia) are horrible to access... but it can be done. Serviced every 5,000kms since we've owned it.
Good job mate I remember in the 1980s, especially with the VL Commodores. Everybody had to have a turbo timer You never see them any more ……. Maybe the design is improved. don’t need them any more.
Mine smokes when started unless its idled for 30 seconds on the last drive before turning off. Heard turbo was going out and needed replaced. Fk all that. Ill keep idling the 30 seconds.

I have just taken my CX7 AWD 2.3L engine out... that turbo would be a nightmare to do from the top - it's bad enough to take out with full access because of the piping... it's an incredibly stupid ford engine in a Mazda car... even the timing has no KEY! Moronic!

Wtf would you pull the engine? Take off the manifold and pull it from the top... You don't need to drop the engine for the turbo....that's why mechanics over charge you for unnecessary work.
Even if you did need to drop the motor in it I have done an engine swap in less than 8 hours . Them engines are really easy to work on. Tons of room to work on them. I probably could have done my turbo faster dropping the engine but still only took less than 7 hours being a contortionist doing it in the car.
Took 18 hours, but i did mine in my driveway. Mostly from the top. Zero access from underneath.

I did my turbo in a little over 6 hours without dropping my motor in 2011 cx-7. I won't say I had to be double jointed a few times but very doable. 😊

Didnt remove the engine. Remove transfer case to access. Not a fun job at all.

They used timers because they didn't run coolant....Cheers mate....Not a fun one either.
@@ziggassedup yes they used coolant. With plain bearing turbo if shut down to hot the shaft can warp or seize in the bearing

I heard from one guy who said he did it in 18hrs from the top...I took 10 hrs....How long does it take you.?
