What a fantastic video. I'm making matching girl and doll dresses for my granddaughter. I bought a gathering foot some time ago but was intimidated by it and had never used it. Decided to try it on the dresses I'm making - with double ruffles on the sleeves and bottom of the dresses. (YIKES!) Fortunately, I found your video and LOVE how easy my gathering foot is easy to use. You did a fantastic job of demonstrating it. Plus the extra demos/information for working with shear fabric and sewing the ruffle on the bottom of a fabric was also invaluable. My ruffling is soooooooo easy. You're great! Thanks bunches! I'll be watching LOTS more of your videos.

You want the tension to be a number or 2 higher than you would normally have. Test if you like those gathers and adjust as you wish. So, on my machine for one layer or medium weight, the tension is a 3. When I use this foot, I will bring the tension up to a 5, test a scrap, and decided if I want more or less gathering.
Thank you! The Ruffler foot technically makes "pleats". Also, with the ruffler foot you get more customization and accuracy. You know exactly how many pleats it produces, how deep the pleats are, and how far apart they are spaced.

Hi! Test out your gathers on a 10 inch piece of similar weight scrap fabric and gather. You may have to do this a couple times to find the amount of gathers you like. Once you find a gather setting you like, remeasure the fabric. From there you can determine how long your strip (to be gathered) needs to be in order to fit the straight piece. So, If my gathers turned my 10 inch fabric into just over 3 inches, I know I'll need three times the fabric to fit my straight piece. Whosh, make any sense?

Yup, you can back tack. However, if you are using the shirring method (elastic thread in the bobbin), bring you stitch length down as far as your machine goes (mine is 0.2) and sew a few stitches to "back tack".

I tried my gathering foot from a cheap 15 piece kit for the first time on my Brother CE4000 and tried adjusting the tension and couldn’t get good stitches. I got very good results on my Domestic 468 with the same foot at tension 4. It would be nice to have a snap on gathering foot for my Brother because it seems to like that adapter. Oh well, I may buy the gathering foot for my Brother that your site sells. Thank you for your video.

I haven't tried this foot with a zig zag stitch, but go ahead and give it a try. You can definitely use a straight stitch, but the gathers won't have any give. If you need the gathers to stretch, I would use elastic thread in the bobbin.

It depends on fabric weight and your settings. I always cut a 10 inch scrap from the fabric I will be sewing and test my settings. From the gathered length, I can determine how much fabric I will need. If you don't back stitch, you can manually adjust your gathers by pulling on the bobbin thread at both ends. Just make sure you start with a long thread tail.

For a little tighter gather, you can hold your finger behind the gathering foot while you sew the gathers. When you get a big pile of gathers, start over again. Helps just a bit.

Got my gathering foot and it's not work. Just figured out my fabric is too thick. It a cotton with embroidery and it just won't work. When I switched fabrics it worked just fine. I was still able to gather the thicker fabric by pulling the threads. It made for a very evenly gathered skirt vs. doing by hand. A lot faster, too.

When the title at the beginning of your video said "shearing foot" I wondered if you actually meant "shirring" and you did. ;-) My late maternal grandmother owned a Brother. It was pretty fancy for a mid 20th century machine at that time in my country of origin.
Gathering foot: Must the 2 fabric pieces be just blocks of fabric, or can you use 2 ready cut pattern pieces, i.e. skirt with a ruffled bottom? It looks like you can't judge the fit of the pieces; you would have to cut the pattern pieces after you attach the ruffle to the flat pattern piece.
Thank you SOOO much for tho video! I am planning on making and selling satin bonnets and had been trying to figure out how to get rid of the pillowcase look it had as a finished result. Then it came to me, "I can gather instead of sewing a straight line". I tried to gather using clear elastic but that was a headache and my thread wasn't acting right. Then I did the manual way by doing a baste stitch but that's just too much --- I'm lazy. So I looked up a gathering foot and came across your website. Thank goodness! Now all I need is the Janome machine I've been wanting because I'm so tired of my sister's sewing machine which is a brother and I don't care for brothers but I like yours!!!!!

Janome's are great machines. The benefit of the Jem Gold is the price and the fact that it has a 1 step buttonhole foot - GREAT time saver.

Think of it as a ratio of gathers or gather proportions based on your stitch settings.
What brother machine are you using - just curious.
No. You could but did not have to use a needle and thread for gathering. That was probably 209 years,ago before sewing machines were invented. We made a double or triple row of large stitches (makes the gathers lie flatter), the middle row on the seam line, wrapped one end of the threads around a pin or whatever to anchor them, and pulled them gently without breaking them and spread the gathers out evenly. Then pulled the bottom row that would show out. The gathering foot is a convenience but it really works better for things lime gathered skirts to do it manually in my opinion.
That's how I did it back in the 1960's...LOL...what a revelation to see this great improvement....

I put the gathering foot on, and tried different fabrics, different settings for length, etc. and it does not gather at all. Looks just like your foot, so what am I doing incorrectly? I tried heavy fabrics, light chiffony fabrics, setting for 5 stitch length, etc? Help! LOL! Thank you!
When you u se the terms higher or lower for stitch lengths what do you mean in terms of length? Is higher a longer stitch while lower is a shorter stitch? Please clarify.
+Mary Ellen Hager I didn't create the video, but I assume she means higher=longer {e.g. "4" is a basting stitch, and 2 is medium length}. The same would hold true for machines with a larger selection of stitch lengths.

You can practice using this presser foot and adjusting the thread tension. You will need to practice gathering with the same fabric you are using for your project.

why does the gathered piece of material increase the distance from the foot?

It's a cotton bought at a quilt fabric store. Might to medium weight. Got it to gather some but now hard to sew 2 materials together. :(

You probably won’t need to but if you do you can hold it in place for a couple of stitches at the beginning and end.

Your tension must be set to the highest which is typically 9.

I was just curious as to when the bobbin was replaced with the elastic thread why the whole plate was removed? I just remove the little clear door to replace my bobbin. Is there an advantage of doing it this way??
Hello, Eleanor! My assumption is that the only reason Sarah did that was so that you could more easily see the elastic thread being manually brought up. Taking off just the cover plate is just fine.
@@SewingPartsOnline Oh OK, so actually either way works. Just what your comfortable with doing. I will have to try this to see if its easier. I have long nails and sometimes its hard to get the little plastic door off,maybe removing the plate might be easier for me.
What is the difference between this and a ruffler foot? Why would I choose one over the other? I do lots and lots of ruffles on my sewing projects it's kind of my trademark. :-)
Jane Doe Hi Jane! I'm so sorry I am just now responding - I must have missed this comment before. Anywho, the big difference is that the ruffler foot really creates pleats and the settings are more precise. If you like the full, dramatic ruffles - definitely go for the ruffler foot. Btw - ruffles are a great trademark!

Silk material is get struck and can't make ruffles..is there a solution?
Did you increase your tension and your stitch length? Also, silk can easily get pulled into the needle plate. If you have a straight stitch plate, I suggest using it. It makes a huge difference. I hope that this helps.
will this foot work on a old singer sewing machine

Hi Brenda! You would have to do a little math and figure out the gathering ratio. For example, say your settings turn 10 inches of fabric into 5 gathered inches. Then, measure the distance between darts. So, if you have 10 inches between darts, make sure you have 20 inches of fabric measured for that area. Does that make any sense?
Could I use a binding foot with fold over elastic for the leg openings of underwear? Instead of using regular bias tape. Any experience with this?
I am looking for a 1/4 inch presser foot to fit a a Smart 260c Pfaff sewing machine. Everyone that I have purchased for a Pfaff does not work on my machine.
After cross-referencing, I found a couple of options that should work for you. :) The 1/4 foot with no guide is part number 820883096 and the 1/4 with guide is 820881096.

To gather the fabric, you need to increase your tension and increase your stitch length.
what would you say the ratio would be if you were attaching a piece to be gathered to a flat piece of fabric?, like say if i have a child's dress skirt to add a ruffle to, would i cut my ruffle to be twice the length of the skirt piece?
Hi Andrea! I'm so sorry I Missed this comment! So, the ratio depends on the size of your gathers. What I do is test on a 10 inch piece scrap fabric & then Measure the length After it has been gathered. So if my fabric is 5 inches after being gathered, then the ratio would be l:2

Carol HappyExpressions It can be a little frustrating, but you just slowly wind it onto the bobbin by hand. It takes a good 5 minutes to get would. I usually start by slipping the starting point through one of the bobbin holes, the start wrapping it up so that the end is secure.
Sewing Parts Online Can I share how I do elastic thread? OK, I will. I had to do this cause I can't hold the bobbin. I put an artist paint brush through the hole of bobbin to get it started,. Then I put the bobbin on the bobbin winder, and the spool of elastic on the artist brush and fill away. I hold the brush so that elastic pulls off with no tension.

First, I would recommend confirming you are using the correct gathering foot for your machine. What is the make and model of your machine?
But how can you control the length of gathered fabric that you need? For example, to make a strip of gathered line of fabric 61" long? I am not sure if I am explaining myself clearly.
Do a sample of your fabric, measure before stitching to find which stitch length produces the 2 to 1 ratio.
Example- cut 10" strip, set stitch length at 2, and see what it measures when done gathering, adjust until it finishes at 5"

I tried using a gathering foot but its cutting my thread after a few stitches. Not sure what's wrong.
If you know it's good quality thread, then it's almost certainly a tension adjustment issue, or less likely, a blunt needle. My Bernina will only use pure cotton, and turns up it's nose at polyester thread, the stitches go haywire, so try both in yours?

When I try to gather my strips, a few inches gather then sews straight stitches, a few gathers, then thread tangles. I have cleaned all parts, retreaded, changed needle (ball point). Tried again, still a mess.Changed back to regular foot, perfect.
Watched video again, going to take a walk, come back to try again. If doesn't work, I'm going back to elastic thread.
