Also, Jiraiya dying was gay in retrospect especially when so many others have died and came back or should've been dead and somehow survived. That death felt so cheated and lame. Makes me almost wonder if there was an issue with Jiraiya's voice actor IRL that caused them to just off the character suddenly.

I can see why Naruto has a lower ceiling than one piece. Naruto's world isn't as fleshed out as one piece. Outside the Hidden leaf the rest of the world's villages feel under developed.

I’d say since the Netflix series came out the popularity of both series is pretty much equal for different reasons. Younger generation isn’t too into Naruto. This is a pointless rivalry on the same level of "who's the smartest dumb person." Neither series has any real depth or complexity, beyond superficial complexity. Which is to say that any "complexity" either series has is entirely because of the convoluted nature of Shounen Jump and has nothing to do with actually being deep. When every episode is the characters spelling out to you, in no uncertain terms, exactly what is happening, the series believes that you are stupid. I've yet to see a series like Naruto or One Piece or even Bleach, which shows you something and expects you to understand the visuals or context alone. It's the primary reason I stopped watching anime and reading manga. All of the legitimately interesting stories are buried under massive mounds of terrible, repetitive shite, which all believe you're too stupid to understand their basic level BS. Too many series now believe they are ingenious, while being some of the dumbest writing I've ever come across. It's infuriating.

Third, no I don't need a character to throw a shuriken - which should only be in flight for two seconds tops - then take two minutes to explain why they threw a shuriken at their enemy, only for said enemy to spend half a second doging the shuriken, so they can then spend five minutes explaining how that shuriken activated their super secret ultimate technique. I would much rather the character throw the shuriken, their opponent evade the attack, then activate their power in just a few seconds. Because unlike you, I'm capable of understanding context without needing someone to pull me aside and verbally explain in detail what I just watched happen. It would also help with pacing.
