I don't think WoW is at a crossroads, I think in Legion WoW found it's new identity. I don't think there's anything wrong with this identity and heaps of players love it, but it definitely left some players behind that used to enjoy the world and solo content more. I think they actually do a good job of creating content for these players but they give no rewards or they don't really show this content off enough. Achievements like A World Awoken and You Xal Not Pass are great ways to experience the world and see lots of other players just doing random events and exploring. The issue is these achievements are hidden deep in the achievement tab, and they reward mounts. These achievements imo should be in the adventurer's journal or somewhere that you can see every time you log in, and there are so many mounts in the game now that there's almost no reason to do them when you're already riding your favourite mount. Hopefully player housing can create a new avenue for rewards.
Original Vanilla player here. I do agree in some points. I would add that taking away the grind of leveling was a huge mistake imo. Leveling should be a huge portion of your game experience so you get to know your class intimately, gives your character time to grow with you, not just "another alt I wanted to level". This will give you the "I am invested in this toon" feeling. Now, with that said, it should be hard and much slower grind to max level for 1 character only with the rest of your alts be 50% faster or so. Ask yourselves, why are people flocking to older version of the game? The answer is evident and you have pointed out some of it in this video. Unfortunately Blizz is catering to the 8yr olds and woke mob destroying the game.
