Homes are for People - Campaign Launch Video
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лип 2024
- Everyone deserves a good home. But decades of government inaction have allowed real estate investors to turn housing into a machine for profit, making rents and home prices unaffordable for the rest of us.
Leaving housing to the whims of wealthy and powerful investors has gotten us into this mess - it definitely won’t fix it.
That’s why we’re gearing up to fight for housing solutions that put people, not profits, first. Are you in? Join our campaign: leadnow.ca/housing/?source=yt
#HomesAreForPeople #AffordableHousing #housingcrisis #housing
this is so incredibly critical. If Citizens can't afford to live in their country, what is the use of the country!
Yes, they can do it again! Very good video, and the points are so true. Homes are for people!
So are jobs, not hand outs from the govt.
Excellent video This is the key issue underlying poverty.
Land
Value
Tax
We must end the whole idea of land as an investment.
Yes this ^^^^^^^ and while we're at it groceries too
Thank you, Leadnow, for the hard work that you are putting into this crucial battle. Good video...stay strong and we will overcome.
Thank you, excellent video ❤
The CMHC's largest role post war was in encouraging widespread home ownership, not social housing. Canada has also never had enough social housing to have a huge moderating effect on market rents -- affordability was driven by government policy that encouraged supply rather than restricted it and enabled land speculation. The inconvenient truth is that the conditions enabling this kind of speculation in the first place are well-intended regulations that make land artificially scarce and give landowners monopoly-like power to set prices.
Affordable social housing and other rental housing are important and will always be needed for some, but this focus makes me worry we are ok with settling for a class society (in which actual houses are inherited) as long as the new permanent tenant class are not in desperate circumstances. The best guarantee of security of tenure is ownership!
Well Done Leadnow.
A fantastic campaign video guys! Driving the points home with some great visuals. Keep up the outstanding work.
It costs the Government well over $100,000/year to house someone in prison. It's much cheaper to simply build and maintain affordable housing than see the homelessness crisis increase and sending people with nowhere else to go to jail.
What?? They don't throw people in jail for homelessness! Otherwise we wouldn't have the homeless problem, they would all be in jail with a roof over their heads & 3 square meals a day.
Individual communities and municipalities are stepping up woth creating affordable housing, not waiting on our federal or provincial governments to act. But we also see a huge amount of road re-construction and resurfacing going on, where we could drive slower to avoid the ruts, and use the money instead for affordable housing.
This is a great video, talking about how we got to this place. Housing is a basic human right, and developers and opportunistic capitalists have made it about money... no surprise there! Money, big money, foreign money all contributing to this crisis, they need to be held accountable for the homeless situation that they created! How does that happen?
Thanks Leadnow for all you do❤
Very well done. It's convincing and encouraging. . . and honest. Thank-you Leadnow!
I just learned that the apartment building across the street from me has new owners who are substantially raising everybodies rent! Here in Saskatchewan it would seem that there is no protection for renters. That has to change.
Thank you. Very well done.
The National Housing Strategy (NHS) promised rights-based legislation to implement the government’s commitment to the progressive implementation of the right to housing, and the National Housing Strategy Act received Royal Assent in June 2019. Housing is a Human Right under Article 25 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and under Article 11.1 of the 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). *Canada ratified both, and we need to exercise those rights.*
No, we need to put the brakes on mass migration & foreign students & foreign investors. Which the foreign investors the govt had stopped for a few years. The Century initiative foundation has been lobbying the Libral govt for mass migration. As well as the UNs Agenda 2030/50. Which also has been pushing mass migration into all Western countries. Which those countries are having the same problem as here in Canada. More people means less housing options. We don't need mass migration as it costs taxpayers billions of dollars, especially for foreign workers. 70% of F.W. income is from taxpayers.
@@liquidgal9867 the "foreign buyer ban" is laughable. It still allows TFWs AND int'l students to buy property provided only that they have a minimum of 183* days left on their visas. It is preposterous. That said, *domestic* "investors" including "mom & pop" are a far bigger problem than foreign buyers (only about 3%). We need to put the brakes on any single individual or entity owning more than 'x' number of properties, and change the tax laws that enable them (e.g. HELOCs to borrow against equity in house #1 to pay for house #2, #3, #4, etc., and interest-relief, and write-offs for "providing" rental properties, which is also preposterous). The system isn't "broken", they designed it this way. Fire the lot of them and never hire McKinsey "consultants" again. We have become a nation of parasite-enablers.
*Edited to correct # of days. See "Better Dwelling" article "Canada Quietly Rolled Back Parts of Its Foreign Buyer Ban After Just 86 Days" (March 29, 2023)
@@liquidgal9867 Because the government doesn't help much with covering Ontario student tuition, international students are actually what cover the rest of it. In addition, immigrants are important for the labour market as the birth rate has gone down in Canada. They also represent 32% of our business owners, which creates jobs. Immigration is good for our economy. I don't disagree that Canada has some massive systemic issues to address, but there is nuance in whom we hold responsible for the issues.
Eighteen years ago I had been squeezed out by incoming millionaires and living in my car. I headed to an area of declining population and found a place safe from landlord abuse, but it is like living in exile. I'd love to build something using net zero energy off-grid, but even on a full section, that's illegal. The locals want something with high taxes or nothing.
So how do you know that all those people were millionaires? Could be they have a good credit background & money for a down payment. It's called progress, the growth of Canada has exploded in the last 20yrs. As govt raised the immigration levels higher along with foreign students & foreign workers. Which put a strain on land values & land itself. not enough housing was built for all these people. Sounds like you were trying to live in one of the most expensive real estate in the world. If it was in Vancouver, what do you expect. There is very little land there, as the downtown core is surrounded by water. That's why they have built up into the mtns & pushed more out to the valley. And building huge high rises everywhere. I don't think govt should use taxpayers' funds to build housing. It should be from foreign investment & local investors' firms building The biggest issue with Canadas govt being federal or Provincial is for years they allowed foreign investors to buy up real estate in the housing market & mass migration. Which drove up the prices of houses. Instead of only selling to Canadians that live here & work here. Canada doesn't have enough developers with billions in money to invest in building affordable housing. That's why govt has to look for foreign investment. Which it doesn't matter if foreign investment is used or investors here. They only invest if they can make some sort of profit, which ai don't blame them. When you invest in millions of dollars.
But it seems to me these people that made this video, all want to live a champagne life style on a beer budget. Actually whine to much & expect govt to bail them out. Aiden looks like a keyboard warrior. Oh wait he is, works for a foundation & a lobbyist group. Hoping people will constantly donate so he doesn't have to get a real job. After all the whole foundation always says they don't take govt hand outs. But want your handouts. Leadnow open up here from donations from USA Tide Foundation. They are a lobbyist group, meaning they want govt to listen & follow their complaints.
Thank you...we need help on this issue seriously and. I never thought I'd be in the shoes I'm in. But Trudeau does NOTHING to help the people
Destroy forever the power of private banks to create and use debt money.
That would tremendously reduce inflation.
There must be a severe control over speculation, something like 98% income tax, for example, in order to discourage it.
Do not tax sweat.
Do tax speculation.
Limit personnal wealth.
Define what primary goods are and guaranty access to them for all citizens.
- Healthy food;
- Clean water;
- Affordable adapted housing;
- Decent working conditions;
- Access to health services;
- Education from first grade to university;
No govts need to stop mass migration. And a over abundance of foreign workers drives down wages. Corporations continue to use foreign workers, which in turn is funded at 70% from taxpayers. Another problem is lobbyist groups like Century initiative that wants mass migration. As well as the UN agenda 2030/50, which the UN has pushed mass migration to all Western countries. The EU has same problems as Canada. Even the USA..
Why should there be a limit on personal wealth? That's just daft. People who work hard for their money should be able to spend it or save it the way they see fit. As for your define what primary goods are we have all those, Canada has Healthcare, which all citizens have access to, we have healthy food. We have clean water. Last time I checked I wasn't drinking dirty water. As for our indigenous people, nothing is stopping them for building sanitizing stations for access to clean drinking water. We pretty much have decent working conditions. As corporations & businesses would be put in front of the courts. If they abuse workers. We have access to education. What do you think property taxes pay for! As Canada is partially socialism. This sounds more like communism, if that's the case you better re read up on communism it didn't go well for millions of people. Thanks peace out.
We need a moment like this in the United States!
Everyone should be guaranteed average market rent by Postal Code constitutionally so people aren't forced away from family, friends, Drs and other health professionals and local clinics or hospitals, local supports, etc.
Market rent is way too high in most places.
Earnings are too low and have been too low for about 40 yrs. Rent prices are where they should be. Housing talk is a smokescreen to poverty.
@@hgdfihdjkmaybe maybe not, depends on what or where you are renting. If you rent from a private person that has a basement suite, you don't know what their down payment was for their mortgage or the cost of the purchase of said property. The property taxes they pay or heating, hydro etc. Same goes for apts you don't know how much the landlord or development company has paid on said building or the purchase of the property. The interest payments on mortgages of said property. How much their down payment is. Plus the amount that they pay in property taxes. Or how much they get paid to run the apts or hire someone for maintenance etc. It's not a cut & dry situation people need to critically think. People need to think outside the box. If you own a house you have to pay interest on your mortgage, depends on the amount you put down on mortgage. The amount you pay on property taxes. Then you also have to pay for heat,hydro,phone,cable ect. Is it a newer home or older one, does it need a new roof? Or hot water tank? Same goes for apts, row homes townhouses etc. The location is another factor you live in a metropolitan area you will be paying more on your property taxes for the convenience of living close to everything. If you own a rental house how do you know if the person you rent it to will be doing the upkeep or are you doing it. Are you hiring someone for maintaining it. What happens if the house gets trashed? Does the down payment cover it all, possibly but what happens if it doesn't. Now you have to go to court to get your cash back to fix your house. Or rental property. You gotta love the people who can't see in front of their noses or critically think on things. Peace out.
@@hgdfihdjkoh my God! Are they really? Supply & demand, if you live in a metropolitan city then of coarse you will be paying more for having the convenience of everything at your finger tips. Just wondering do people critically think anymore. It's not a cut & dry situation. If you live in city are you renting your apt or whatever? When was said building built, a newer apt the developer more than likely paid big bucks for the property. Did that developer have a huge down payment to fund the building of it or did developer have to have others to share the payment to build it? Developers have to have millions of cash up front to pay for workers to build it & to pay for materials in order to build. they, too, have to pay interest on any monies they need to borrow to build it. Now is the apt high end on the materials that they are building, could be roughly $150-$200 dollars a square foot. How tall is this said apt, how many suites are there. How much sq feet per suite. Then you also have to calculate for hallways, elevators, common areas as well. After apt built they have to hire in maintance personal for up keep on outside of property & inside, how many maintance people will they need? They also have to pay for managers to run apt. Plus said building has property taxes to be paid. Is that part of the funding if they sell units or is it separate. Is the said apt all rentals or all sold as private housing or 1/2 & 1/2. Developers have to also pay municipalities for development costs. Which is hookup for sewer,water sidewalks, etc. So in other words it takes millions & millions of dollars to build. And if said Developers have cash tied up while apt is being built & it takes a cpl of yrs to build and the developer had to borrow funding they pay interest as soon as cash is in their hands. So of coarse the developer wants a % for their wages otherwise why build if you don't make some form of $ out of it. Their time is worth money also just like yours is.
Peace out.
@@isabellagamkactually wages are high, have been for yrs, but also depends on the education of workers. that's why a lot of businesses closed shop years ago & headed for countries that had cheaper labor costs as well as environmental standards. Look at a body shop or maintenance for your vehicle. They charge anywhere from $75- $100 $150.00 dollars a hr. Most blue collar jobs pay between $ 20- $30 hr. They have to pay hire wages in order to keep employees. And for competition against other businesses or Corp. to not plunder workers from other businesses. Thats competition for you. Too many people not enough jobs also. But wages in Canada vary from each province. Minimum wage in BC is $ 17.40 hr as of June 1st 2024. And that wage is for entery level work. Example fast food restaurants, cashiers for Walmart or other stores. Unless you are a huge corporation that doesn't hire Canadians & lie & say they need foreign workers for these jobs, than the taxpayers pay 70% of those workers wages. The more govt brings in mass migration it drives wages down. Not up. 😊 peace out.
Canada is a wealthier country than its ever been! We can (and must) invest in affordable housing.
Capitalism would have us believe that life is just a big game of Monopoly in which we are all, ourselves, mere pawns subject to the rules of the game. All levels of government should have known better than to go along with that idea because the dysfunction and inequity we face now was its foregone conclusion from the outset. #lizziemagiewasright
So your solution is communism. You better re read history books b/c under communism it didn't work well for millions of people that starved or were brutally beaten & killed. Mao, Stalin, Hitler. Need I say anymore. Look how many Chinese people over the years have fled from China, or even Cuba. Atleast with capital ism you have a choice to work as little as you want or as much as you want. You can even become a entrepreneur. Nothing is stopping you to fulfill your dreams. Just depends how bad you want it. And for people that have worked hard all their lives, it's their reward for becoming as wealthy or not. And it should be up to them on how & if they want to distribute their wealth. After all they where the ones that did the grunt work to get them wealthy. I find that people I have talked to that think Capitalism is terrible either need to live in a communist country for a few years or are people that expect hand outs from everyone else. Instead of working for what you want out of life. You do realize if you live in a communist country, and say your career choice is a Dr. You get paid the same wages as a bartender or teacher or whatever. You think that's fair? What happens if your work ethics are to work hard & do extra little things at your job, but the person next to you doesn't have that same work ethics & are say slower or ?? Is it fair that they get everything the same as you? Or someone works a less dangerous job or less stressful or ?? They get the same wages as you. Or vise versa. What happens if you have a dangerous job that everyday you go to work & something terrible could happen to you, yet the street sweeper works a less stressful job gets paid the same as you. Is that fair!?
Affordable homes, not luxury, high end real estate.
How about all you complainers come up with millions of dollars & build your own community. You expect the people out there working their butts off to pay taxes, so you can get cheap housing. Waaaa, what a bunch of non sense. I cant afford to live where I grew up, but I dont whine about. My family lived in Vancouver since the early 1900s. I improvise & moved on & out of the city.
tell us how to come up with millions of dollars and build our own community if you think this is the solution.
Why didn't you come up with millions of dollars and build a community in Vancouver so you could stay in the city?
You see apparently there are 60,000 followers of Leadnow get everyone to donate $10.00 then in a few months get people to donate another $10.00. Or get a good paying job quit whining & save your money. Why live in the most expensive property value in Canada & the 2nd in the world. Seems this Leader of LeadNow hasnt worked a day in his life. Thats why hes got baby soft hands. Hes a keyboard warrior. @lesliengo8347
