Greetings, I have the FG830c new. Experienced player, I'm going bone nut, saddle and pins. Just a little brighter and a touch more sustain but mainly no tuning issues as I'm semi pro and have had things not quite right in the middle of a gig. For a laminated guitar, campfire player it's not necessary.
Great video, Don here from Hamilton NZ on my Wife's tablet 'SUSAN' it Really does make a difference, I'm just a retired old guy, an Iv'e been playing for around 60 years and I do small repairs and improvements 'cos I enjoy it, and the results are nicer/playing instrument's and the owners are amazed, and it's videos like yours are a big help, kind regards Don 😊😊😊
Excellently presented video, also just what I needed as I intend to change a Tusq nut to bone. (The nut seems to breaking strings!) Did you need to adjust the slots, also what glue did you use/recommend to set the nut?
I did not have to adjust these slots, but that may have been sheer luck which I'll take any day until the bad luck day happens upon me. A tiny dab of wood glue (I've seen Elmer's also used) - like a pin point - on the face of the nut at the fretboard end. Just enough so the nut doesn't fall out when strings are off. There may be other tactics/opinions of course.
Apologies for the delayed response! I believe that is the nut width, but I do know the total string spacing at the nut that I made is 38.1mm. Slightly more room than the stock one.
Very interesting about the total string spacing distance. Martin D-15 total string spacing distance is 38.7mm with a nut width of 44.4mm. Yamaha FG800 total string spacing distance is 37mm with a nut width of 43.6mm. It is really nice the new replacement has the string spacing distance wider. The neck can easily handle the extra width. Knowing this I think a lot more people will purchase a FG or FS guitar with being able to have a wider string spacing distance. I use a 1 3/4 size neck and with this spacing it will easily give the string spacing of a 1 3/4 neck. Also the neck depth of the Yamaha FG is the same as the Martin on the first fret. By the way what did you get for your total string spacing? Best regards
Thanks. Yes, I'm going to try a set of pins that I have but don't know exactly what wood they are. It'll be a contrast to test against the plastic though.
Don here from Hamilton NZ on my Wife's tablet-SUSAN, just regarding if you bridge pins a Luthier, told me nothing will alter the sound past the bridge, but I'm still guilty of thinking maybe they ( brass or bone etc. pins) just MIGHT improve the tone abit more, but that's what he said, Nut......Saddĺe, that's it, there's your tone. Kind regards 😊😊😊
Don here again buddy, good to see your doing it yourself too,( I do the same) however it's been my experience that with the higher end Yamaha's they always use' Urea ' material for their nut's and saddles and I found it EXTREMELY HARD (comparatively) to bone so what I do is leave those components as they are And just add a Zero Fret, and Iv'e found not only a slightly brighter sound ( which is why we're doing this) but Also a longer life to your string ( they keep their twang longer) just my thoughts though, kind regards 😊😊😊
Nice sound, Jason. Which brand of strings are you using? Light or medium? What sort of neck action do you use? High/medium/low? And (since I can't find your video) bone or plastic? Anything else to upgrade the FG850? Thanks for the fix-it video, too. I'm contemplating buying a used guitar, but now think I may be able to replace the nut myself.
Much appreciated! D'Addario EJ16. Lights. Medium. Bone. I don't plan to upgrade anything else, maybe pins if I feel like it but I don't feel the need at the moment. I'm happy with bone nut and saddle and keep this guitar nearby in alternate tunings. You're very welcome! Good luck. Hope you enjoy the process, cheers!
Thanks, me too. I cut a bunch of boring footage of me listening deeply to individual notes and chords for like 30 minutes. Hoping the difference is evident from out front when I do the comparison of setups.
Yamaha build beautiful guitars ! Is yours all solid wood? And what wood is the top? It sounds like a lot more expensive and it has a lot of sustain! You're a good player so let us hear more!🇨🇦
To each his own I suppose. $469 new isn't that cheap for many people. It is nice to get such a quality guitar for a good price, no? What is your preferred Yamaha model? They make so many good ones, cheers!
It is from a Lapel Mic, run right into my phone for the playing footage. Simple setup and better than the phone mic... or my camera mounted mic for that matter. I'll do another with my Rode NT USB mic run into GarageBand for the comparison soon.
I'm dying to get it done, but haven't been able to due to a bout of sciatic leg pain that has stolen a few months from me. Hard to concentrate on anything! Inching toward getting better but it's been very painfully slow. Soon as I can I will, thank you!!
They sell a bone nut and saddle (un bleached) on Amazon and the nut is already the correct width.
Nice, it's a good time to be a hobbyist these days, so many options available. Only thing standing in our way is our effort really, cheers!

@wyattsdad8561 been hanging on a month, you still looking on Amazon ?

Excellent, glad to hear the Yamaha serves you so well, great guitars!

Thanks for the encouragement and dropping a line. I'm glad to hear your experience. Cheers!
Bone definitely makes a difference!
I hear it myself, especially from the players position. I think it is harder to hear from out front but some ears are better than others
Sounds great. Did you have to add some glue to the new nut or no?
Thanks! Just two tiny dabs of wood glue so it doesn't slide around during string changes.

@@jasonvalcourt Thank you. Personally, I think bone is the way to go, it seems to transfer sound the best from tests I've done.
This Yamaha guitars, really deserve a bone upgrade.
They do, cheers!
Yes indeed I just did a replacement on a Yamaha FG 800 today, swapped out the nut and saddĺe for bone equivalents and what a difference That Made 😮😊😊
GREAT VIDEO! Thank you
Much appreciated, cheers!
Thats all it takes!
Fun process and I'm happy with it!
Im curious if you went with the 44mm nut? I hear it makes these FGs even better to play because of slightly wider string spacing?
Apologies for the delayed response! I believe that is the nut width, but I do know the total string spacing at the nut that I made is 38.1mm. Slightly more room than the stock one.

@@jasonvalcourt excellent looking forward to that
Did you need to use nut files to adjust the slots?
Yes. I have a basic set. Maybe someday I'll invest in the diamond cut ones but these are fine for me.

Solid Mahogany top. Laminated Mahogany back and sides. Much appreciated!
Cual es ka razón de comprar esta g u itarra barata ,si supuestamente tiene mejores guitarras que es lo lógico. No entiendo.

@@jasonvalcourt Where do you have it located? Most of the videos on mic placement state, point the mic at the 12 or 14 fret 12" away.

Narrator: It was in fact more than one hair...
Yes, yes it definitely was...
Makes the guitar sound much more expensive than it is
Yea, it's a small upgrade for big return, thanks!
I thought the FG 850 comes with bone
I believe all of the 800 series all come stock with Urea. Higher up the food chain for bone.
As soon as he said super glue I cringed!
Good catch. Misspoken!
Super glue has no place on a guitar!
Not many, thanks for looking out!
Way too loose
What are you referring to?
Sounds great
Thanks, I think so too. Happy with it so far!
