some background info for those interested: Lanting Xu or Preface of the Orchid Pavilion is a famous piece of calligraphy by Wang Xizhi written in 353 CE. It's among the best-known and most often copied pieces of calligraphy in Chinese history and is revered as the best running calligraphy. However, Emperor Tai Zong took the original to his grave, so all we have are the traced/copy/engraved versions smh
This is so freaking gorgeous. The way they control the thickness of the lines with the pressure of the brush is just amazing…. seems like it’d take so much practice!
Chinese calligraphy is about discovery of yourself. A couple weeks ago I taught a class and used the most cheapest horrid brushes ever, and boy did I complain!! Then I realized at the end it wasn't about the brush. It was about my unwillingness to relax and use what was available to me to create. Start slow and work your way up to good brushes and paper. Explore. Many regards, from Canada

Only one or a few characters of Chinese writing is needed to make a very descriptive and beautiful poetry without crowding the entire page with a string of letters and long sentences. For example, 春 means "spring" with just using one Chinese character instead of 6 separate letters. Chinese writing, and it's derivatives like Kanji in Japanese and Hanja in Korean, can encode SO much more information in a few characters than typing out long sentences to say the exact same thing: (4 characters) A sea of people (12 letters)

the copies might actually be better than xizhi's handwriting, this person also copied wang xizhi and I think he did it better.

It just takes practice and not accepting doing it incorrectly. Just a few years …
if you tell yourself that then it never will

how incredibly beautiful! it must take years of practice for this type of skill and discipline -
